Please keep all discussion of tonight's performances on this thread until after the West Coast recovers from 70's themed-induced flashbacks.

Please no sig pics, every time you post a sig pic in the ECST another idol gets unjustly un-pimped.

And off we go... I'm looking forward to watching and listening to the ladies tonight.

(In that order. A little visual appeal is nice.)

Kir Royale and White Russians.

The guys in the dog pound watching. Here are the ladies.

Looks like the song order spoilers are right.

The judges.
Randy has big feet Paula and Simon.

Randy: Song Selection. Know what you sing best and what works for you melodically.

Paula the guys were fantastic last night.

Simon, Mr Happy, I said miserable contestants, was that your constructive criticism. It is an observation, maybe it motivates them.

Are you feelin' better tonight, Snidget? I hope so. Got some ginger tea brewing with a shot of brandy for you.

I am not a Heart fan - but here goes.

Carly needs to sing in front of the mirror. She should see the results of the movement she makes.

Crazy on me, like baking some cookies or something. That just didn't really rock out for me.

Randy. So you picked a rocker this week. You love heart, was Ok by the end, sharp at the begining. The lower notes give you more problems than the big notes.

Paula. Good to see you healthy. Can tell you love heart. It is her favorite song. You are an amazing singer, good to hear you back healthy.

Simon. I thought it was a much better performance than last week. She is really out of breath. You haven't connected with the right song. You are an incredible singer, but haven't chosen that one song that gives you the moment then you are the girl to beat.

I just wish she wasn't so dead behind those eyes.

Hi Snidget and other members--

I agree with Paula, it's great to hear that Carly is doing so much better!

As we all know, last week, an unwanted contestant competed alongside Carly and other American Idol hopefuls – the flu bug. I wonder how Kristy will perform!

The Idols aren't the only ones suffering--thousands of Americans have also been sick with the flu, which usually keeps you down for a week or more. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 49 states are experiencing widespread flu activity.

Check out http://www.Flufacts.com, an interactive website that allows you to access information regarding flu symptoms, treatments and prevention -- as well as track the spread of the flu in your area.

I'm so irritated about this particular bit of spam, I'm going to see if I can die from the flu in the next five minutes just to spite him.

That'll teach him.

What I want to know is, how exactly did he know to spam here about the flu of all things?

I think it sucks that the girls had to perform last week and this one, in less than better condition. That is the business and the situation they've but themselves into, whether they like it or not. And, it doesn't excuse bad song choice or lack of charisma. I've known people on their death beds (literally) that had more charisma than some of these girls. A cold is not a good enough excuse.

"RE: Carly Smithson"
Posted by cahaya on 02-27-08 at 08:18 PM
After last week's debacle, she went all out with this song, definitely more along her line. Vocally strong and more confident this time, she still hasn't figured out how to use the stage or camera, so she wasn't as fun to watch as she was to listen to. Not bad for Crazy on You.

(Not quite a Dreamboat Annie.)

What we don't know is that she has done a lot of commercials. She does a baby cry. I'm sure that gets her lots of work....

"RE: Syesha Mercado"
Posted by Snidget on 02-27-08 at 08:23 PM
Doing it all slow and jazzy. A little boring but a nice tone in her voice.

Randy Loved the commercial on the beach. I don't think this was a great song choice, you got a belting voice as when you do that it sparkles, the soft moments go nowhere, that wasn't what you got, just a taste.

Paula on the softer notes you tend to go off, on the big notes you are great. I liked the interpretation and the choices you made.

Simon I thought it was a bit indulgent, so it wasn't written for a girl to do. I was put off it is not a song designed for your voice so you can't do that big note at the end. Not a good choice for you.

Not the song for her (poor choice), but I think she carried it fairly well although weak on the soft notes. She does have a nice stage presence and crowd and camera sense. Song choice is critical with her vocal style and range.

Playing the guitar.
Doesn't play for the second verse.

I like how the tone in her voice suits this song. Even though she is sitting she is putting a lot of energy into it, plays guitar at the end.

Simon noticed how she was looking at him when she sang.

Randy says it was a great song choice, didn't do much, you were looking at the judges panel.

Paula it totally suits you, brought familiarity.

Simon. Mr Vain/Happy. He absolutely loved it. It was the perfect song for you, one of the rare occasions where I felt you chose the song, it didn't sound old fashioned and this is why we put you through.

I love Brooke, she's my favorite so far. I think she's got the natural talent and the cajones to get it together and rock this competition.

That said, nobody really rocked my world amongst the girls tonight. I don't think any of them had stellar performances, or that any of them "brought it" like a couple of the guys did. I didn't leave this evening with a "she was the BEST vocal performance of the evening" kind of mood. Carly, Salisha, Brooke and Country Girl (Kelly?) were all good, and both AlexAndrea and the last girl to perform were decent. Although I like Amanda, I don't think she did what she had to to make it through to the next round. Her and Kady, I think, are the bottom two.

Very nice well-chosen song, great arrangement with a good strong upbeat major-key voice. The guitar looked like an accessory for a while there, although she did get in some chords to start and end the song with. Frankly, I was pleasantly surprised after her weak performance last week. She won't attract the teens, but there's a demographic that will find her visually appealing on stage.

Slow start was awfully breathy. Not sexy breathy, awful breathy.
Don't style so your hair so it falls down in your face if you start moving, it was distracting.

Randy. This was a little rough, it was OK for me vocally, the song choice was weird, to sing that with all the songs.

Paula. You are one to beat, but I kinda feel the same way, you powered through and you didn't perform your magic, you have amazing vocals.

Simon. Astonishingly I agree with Paula. I've heard it so many times at ghastly weddings, I thought you were better last week with more personality. I won't remember this so well. You can boo all you want I'm trying to be constructive, one of the best singers in the competition, but wasn't your best.

"RE: Ramiele Malubay"

That initial backstory clip with the Philippines cultural dancing reminded me of Malaysian Idol.

And it come out in almost cheesy Malaysian Idol top 20 standard. In spite of a poor song choice (a song we've already heard so many other good versions of), she is exuberant on stage and she has a nice voice, and I enjoy watching her. Look for her to do better next week.

And yes, gentlemen, the ladies there can dance and rotate their hips all the way 'round.

"RE: Ramiele Malubay"

I like her, and gave her a few votes. But she really is going to have to step it up if she's going to make the top 12. She needs a better song choice and some singing coaching. She's got a great tone to her voice, but this week did not show it off at all.

What is with the stripper moves while singing. Oh that's to distract us from the eye spasms.

Not bad, but the performance was distracting for me.

Randy. That is 100% better than last week. I was waiting for a break out moments, mostly in tune I liked it.

Paula. You are back. Good song choice fit in the pocket.

Simon. Can't remember what you sang last week, I think this was a huge improvement. I don't know how to label you, don't know what kind of singer you really are. Country route might make more of a statement. You have real potential.

Ok, who put that skunk on her head? Somehow, the whole visual thing doesn't mix with the song. (a great song by Kansas)

I never really got in it, just starting with the visuals. Songwise? She can belt it out, but on this song? Nuh, uh. The vocals were ok at best.

The hair
The eyeliner
The key she sang in

Oh my. Well got it back near the end, but the middle was pretty awful.

Oh wait then comes the goat vibrato.

Randy. So it wasn't the right song. Way too much melody. To many instrumental breaks, the band is dope and too much melody for a bluesy girl very pitchy.

Paula. You got some moves. (the new the camera loves you). I know you are worried about doing too much Janis, do what feels right and you are needed in this competition, this was not the right song.

Simon. I thought in your film you came natural and cool, and everything felt contrived, none of it felt natural or real in your own world with an ugly song, really didn't get that, wont' get the popular vote with that.

I get that Grease was released in the '70's and one of my most fav movies of all time but the music is written in the style of the '50's so I'm thinking this doesn't really count. Plus she didn't sing it well at all.

At 17 years old she could have pulled off something a little more "sleazy" from the '70's. Like we all did - and you know we did.

"RE: Alaina Whitaker"

"RE: Alaina Whitaker"
Posted by Snidget on 02-27-08 at 09:07 PM
First verse impression, it's a good thing she is cute.

How about getting devoted to the right key?

Randy. I like that song, but I don't think it was the right song for you, the verses were pitchy, even when you belted you overshot it a little sharp.

Paula, I think you did a really good job, I forget how young and how mature you are. Not as bad as Randy thinks.

Simon. I like you, my problem is it is as if your grandmother prepared you for this audition. It is very old fashioned. You are OMG17, there is a way of being current, it was pagenty. I think you are one of the dark horses. I like you more now, but you need to be relevant.

Nah... her song performance was neither '70s-ish or contemporary. Rather bland actually, right along with the blue dress. She has vocal potential, not bad really, but hmmm... she's gotta cut loose next week, if she doesn't get cut loose by the vote this week.

What is wrong with those shorts/capris/no shorts she is wearing?
Yikes.

Randy. She does not look happy. Randy asks why she going like that. She is thinking "It's Over". It was so safe for you and you have mad vocal skills, always challenge yourself.

Paula. Feels you let go and do your own arrangement, and made it your own, never heard a female take on that song. Impressed with you from day one.

Simon. I was a big fan in the early stages, I think you are struggling. It has never been covered for a reason it is stuck in its time period, you were inconsistent and you looked uncomfortable it isn't you and is was boring.

Did she ever hear the original? As soon as I heard how she arranged the song, I cringed. She does have a lot of talent and exuberance, and I think the judges are picking on her self-confidence a bit. She was better last week, and maybe she'll turn it back round next week - if she gets the chance.

She can also do Rigoletto. She has been singing opera since she was nine.

“Magic Man” by Heart

Oh dear, starts on the stairs...and sings Heart.

Please vote for her folks, she'll need it.

Paula is in denial. She can't do Heart - no-one can

This chick has a serious superiority complex. It's almost like she thinks she's too good for this show.

Be glad to see her go.

I disagree, bystander. She is extremely talented and has no direction. It's not attitude. She needs Jamie Foxx's agent/manager.

Pick a stair, pick a key.
Man the lower register on this song is really bad.

Randy. Very interesting song choices. I love that song and Heart, it never found the pitch when you were coming down the stairs, Didn't work.

Paula, when you powered you sounded great, on the low notes you lost. You sing opera well. You need to define who you are.

Simon. Struggling and frustrated. Everything you do on film very good, almost like someone trying to sing Christina, it didn't go anywhere.

I still like her. I think part of the problem was the verses. Once she got to the refrain it sounded great and I liked it.

She wasn't really into the song - and even this competition. She looks lost and confused. Having heard the original, this by comparison was a rather non-magical performance. She's going to be in trouble vote-wise. Too many other better gals around.

As much as everyone says don't touch Celine, Whitney, Queen, Prince, etc. I think Heart is another one of those groups you should never, ever attmept, unless you are absolutely confident that you can pull it off faultlessly.

Agree. They and Chicago are the two bands so far tonight I've seen live. I loved Heart back then, and I still listen to some favs.

I saw Heart at Massey Hall (Toronto) a few (a lot) years back - small intimate setting, great acoustics - incredible show.

So many groups I didn't realize how hard the songs were to sing until I hear how badly people butcher them.

Sounds so easy when the originals did it.

Girlfriend, Lose.The.Extensions.
Oh and the voice cracked bad at the start of the first chorus. Did OK on a few big notes but overall, meh.

Randy. I know you've been sick. Very difficult sing Celine sang everything out of it. Highest degree of difficulty you did a nice job with it.

Paula it was all like ta da you did it, it counts on the ending on this song. Low parts rough.

Simon. It is one of the diva songs of all time, and you have to be a heck of a singer to pull it off. You were not that good of a singer, you almost got away with it, and it was a silly decision.

Stupid Simon called it a Diva song. Eric Carmen a diva? Aren't Diva's historicaly women? Am I getting way too old for Idol? Or too old for Simon?

It freaks me out when people start associating songs with those that record the remakes and forget the original artist. Oh Lord, I think I've just crossed another life marker.

She has a wonderful voice. But, ooo-wee, this song is not to be trifled with. Simon said it best, it showed her up. She's very talented, but not big enough for some songs. I also found her more appealing on stage last week than this week. She looked worried this week. Look for her to bounce back next week.

Just wanted to point out that this is Wayne Brady's band as well, for all his improv shows as well as his game show "Do You Know the Lyrics" or something like that.

Bottom line is - they are fabulous
