Any bucket will do. Just let there be someone that has some semblance of singing ability tonight.

What is this American Idol you speak of????
Some sort of cult, me thinks. I'll stick around ... see how they roll.

"Joey"

Oh, looks like we are starting in Philidelphia, that's what I get for trusting the TV Guide listing.

Biggest crowd ever, or so they say.

Joey Catelono (sp?) lost a huge amount of weight. 204 pounds. wOOt for that no matter how you sing.

Singing Maroon 5. Did a pretty good job. Simon is nervous about him.

Going to Hollywood.

This was the guy who sang "Go down Moses" right? When he was singing all I could think about was that he was "moo-ing".

"Uka, Melanie, James"
Posted by Snidget on 01-15-08 at 08:30 PM
Uka from Egypt, loves the Bee Gees and American girls. Wants to love a girl from the hair to the nipple. Yeep!

Ailay is his full name. He likes Paula. Singing "How Deep Is Your Love"

Simon throws it to Paula, he did a good job of phonetically learning the song and the work. She can't bring herself to say it isn't that good. Simon pushes her to say why he isn't ready. Randy finally steps in. We like you but can't sing. Paula says sing for your own enjoyment. She's been hitting the love juice early. Simon calls her a dream shatterer.

Melanie. She sang back up with Taylor Hicks. Singing "Unwritten". Bad choice in my opinion it is hard to sing. Simon is a no, but they let her through to Hollywood. Not sure why based on that song.

James Lewis. He is a tour guide in Philly. His coworkers told him to come. Do they like him or not. We will see as he sings a gospel song. Oh and his co-workers so do not like this guy.

Let my EARDRUMS GO!!!!!

Let the giggling and snorting commence. Randy and Paula cannot get it together after that performance. And somehow he thinks croaking out another song will help.

Listen to Randy, singing is not your thing. Oh he thinks it is singing old songs that is the problem.

LAST EDITED ON 01-15-08 AT 08:45 PM (EST)

Nearly lunchtime

Nick Stano cracks the liberty bell with "Unchained Melody" And the next few singers do not help matters.

Juno singing Elton John and he goes to Hollywood.

Jose singing in spanish another goes

Jonathan Baines. also goes to Hollywood

What they are showing us some of the good ones, don't tell me they like listened that people wanted to know the good ones last year??

Quite a few tickets before lunch.

Temptress Brown who is a linebacker, like football. wanting to do this for her Mom who is sick and can't breathe. She is 16. We are getting a bunch of back story on her. Simon likes her 10 kittens. Singing "I'm not going no where". Can we add this to the no one should sing this list?

Simon says she is a sweetheart and a good person, just not a great singer. Took on a big song. You got up her and did it in front of us. Poor thing, Paula wants to give her a hug and she gets one from Paula and Randy. She says she can't go out there, and Simon says come on and brings all of them along with them. Who is this man and what did he do with Simon? Mom gets a hug from Paula and Dad gets a handshake.

"RE: Nick, Juno, Jose, Jonathan, Temptress"
Posted by whimsey on 01-15-08 at 08:48 PM
Temptress:
We just got a scary peek into the alternate universe in which Simon loves kittens and is nice to an unfortunate 16 year-old that can't possibly imagine she can sing.

Now I guess I have to go to church Sunday.

"Did they say "Temptress"??"

Not sure I like this kinder, gentler panel of judges. Bring on the snark!

"Mark, Udi"
Posted by Snidget on 01-15-08 at 08:54 PM
Yikes, the guy who turns his foot backwards, OUCH!

Mark, AKA Cricket boy. Tries to croon White Christmas.
*cue cricket sounds*

Never do cricket sounds.

Oh dear, Udi brings MC hammer, badly done, to work. He is sure he will get a ticket.
Udi, some says he sounds like Manilow or Sinatra. Vocalizes something that sounds vaguely like "My Way". I wouldn't call it singing. Simon asks if he had any chance of getting through and he says yes and Simon is back he says Udi is nuts and it was disturbing. Looks for other advice. Keep your batteries in your calculator and be good at your day job.

"I Love Rock and Roll" Medley.

"Alexis"
Posted by Snidget on 01-15-08 at 09:06 PM
Gee Alexis the beat of a different drummer is not something that need to tell us. Um that is Billy Joel not Bon Jovi that sang Allentown. We see the efficiency apartment. She is studying to be a vet. Oh dear, the speech before she goes in. They say she is like Janis Joplin, Grace Slick and Pat Benetar. She will sing "Somebody To Love". Simon, it was a bit possessed. Like she is channeling the voices. I don't think this is the route for you. This competition is not right for you. Needs a 60's cover band kind of thing. Randy no, Paula no, Simon says sorry Sweetheart. Randy sends her off with Peace, Love and Chicken Grease. And she says he is a "Bad Word" Paula, do not take a drink while Simon is trying to figure out that she is like the Green Goblin from Spiderman One. And we have major major freak out. Is that Mom that is helping to fuel the freak out? You know if you want to be an actress you should at least be able to put some real emotion in that freak out, because I'm not feeling it.

Wow she got a whole segment of her own.

There are James' Frogs in the fountain.

We see some golden tickets coming out the door, and some nos.
Day one almost over.

Angela Martin. Jessica, her daughter has Retts (sp?) She has seizures and feet turned in, and her brain isn't growing right. She has her family with her and they help with Jessica, a lot. For her it is about getting the best care for her baby. She has a band and has been working as a singer. "Signed Sealed and Delivered" Hey, she can sing Stevie, that isn't common.

Throws in a Simon. Good audition, she has some bad habits with the corny adlibs and she needs to lose that. You have a good voice and you don't need all that. Need to de-weddingize it. Randy, yes, Paula, yes, Angela, (when did Simon let them vote for themselves) yes and she is going to Hollywood.

Frightening insight into Simon. He says we are genuinely happy when other people we know get good news and it just isn't what he is used to.

Posted by Snidget on 01-15-08 at 09:31 PM
They keep saying record breaking, but never give us a number.

Replay of Day One since we can't remember that far back.

I love you montage, followed by grumpy Englishman.

Alyse "Feeling Good" and I'm feeling battered and bruised by her screaming. Simon says it was the same as his nightmare last week.

And the nightmare got louder.
Teresa, Brandi,

Milo who is over age wants to audition. Song "No Sex Allowed" Ryan is so confused by this he lets him in.
Kill.Me.Now.

Simon doesn't want to here anymore verses. Not perverted at all, but Simon says it is creepy. You are too old we can't even vote.

Christy Lee, outdoor girl and cage fighter. Sold a horse to come try out. Sings "Amazing Grace". Simon says excellent, likes the country sound and 60 sound to her voice. Paula likes the control.
Yes and Yes and come back with more confidence.

"Ben, Paul, Beth"

Ben Har under a cloak

Hold.Me.I'm.Scared.

Benjamin, why should I listen to this (in a slave girl outfit) Paula can't get past the framed chest hair, they will let him go wax it and come back.

Pedro, Shekhinah with a boa who should keep her range to herself, and lots of bleeped free speech.

Paul who wrote a love song for Paula Abdul. Um that is a stalking song, not a love song. Time to restraining order, three, two, one.
Well at least he admits he is a stalker. Simon tries to make him stop as he approaches the table. Simon tells him to leave and that was creepy and disturbing. He wants to play the piano. Security comes to take him away.

Beth Stalker. Sings at clubs and has an album of Sunday School Songs when she was a little kid. She is 28 and her last year to try out. "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered". Simon says she'd have a problem standing out. Randy says yes, and Paula says yes.

He terrified me. Paula will surely have nightmares after that one. To Simon's credit did try to stop it quickly. I'm sure around the water cooler tomorrow everyone will say that guy was a set-up.

He came back. His torso is waxed clean. Sings "Doncha" Simon stops him after 2 seconds and Paula thinks he should get more time.

And he gets the AI version of Amanda's butt blur on the way out.

Chris Watson, 20. About to graduate and from a small town. "Follow Me" by Uncle Cracker. Simon says it is good. He looks like a star may have a good recording voice. Randy likes him and it sounds different and he can really sing. Simon says the chicks will like him. Three yeses.

Chris Watson, 20.

I actually didn't like him that much. He got most of the lyrics messed up and he reminds me too much of David Brown from two seasons ago, I think. He was Randy's favorite during the auditions but got eliminated in the second or third week of the semi-finals.

Parade of rejects.

Two girls left

Christiana. Gee, she's a Star Wars fan, who woulda guessed. Ryan's The Force Joke is not received. Will Sing "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me"

Can you use a light saber to commit Hari Kari?

They like the goofball, but not the voice. And she is very upset. She thinks the dork is what did her in. Um sweetie that voice wouldn't get you through no matter how you dolled yourself up.

Brooke, nanny to twins. She has never seen an R-rated movie, no drinking or smoking. She is married. "Like a Star" Randy likes that she is sort of pure. Simon says she is sincere and he wants to bring her over to the dark side. Triple Yes.

Brooke, nanny to twins.

Thanks to a certain BB8 airhead, nannies have a bad RTV rap. Brooke might change that. She got a lot of coverage and she has a good voice (even singing to the kids), so she might be going places.

Yep, I'd rather get back story on peeps I will see again, and not just at the stupid fake awards at the end.

I do understand the frustration about too many people being too all pop image pretty people.

On the other hand including people who are different just because they are different isn't good for the competition either. If you were really all that the silliness wouldn't matter. After all we've had plenty of people who weren't the image get through (Taylor Hicks, Clay Aiken to name a couple off the top of my head)

Honestly, why pull the gimmick out if you know you would get through on the strength of your voice. If you use the gimmick just to get air time don't get all pissy about them not giving you more with a free wasted trip to Hollywood. At least you got to be seen when a lot of other people who were good enough to go to Hollywood didn't even get their name mentioned.

"RE: Christina, Brooke"
Posted by agman on 01-16-08 at 10:08 AM
That's my thought also. If you can sing, then sing. Don't show up with some stupid costume or gimick and think that something like that will get you to Hollywood. What about the freaky guy who showed up with the cape and had some kind of girl ginnie costume on underneathe? Then gets all that hair waxed off?
I do thing they show way too many trainwrecks and not enough people who actually made it through. If they would show some of them, we would have a better idea of who is whom when the LA auditions come around.

Maybe it is the fog of last season, but I felt we were a bit more balanced in seeing the good and the bad than last year.

I think last year we got much more bad than any other season. We will see how it goes. I like a bit of the freak show as it does represent what shows up. The mix was about right for me last night.

Now if they'll just stop giving Simon some of Paula's love juice.

well they're supposedly lots of plants

"RE: Christina, Brooke"
Posted by Snidget on 01-16-08 at 11:05 AM
I'm not sure how I feel about it.

I really know if we limit it to people who have never had any sort of career at all it would still be a good competition. While there are some people that only sing in the shower that are really good I find those that at least have been struggling to make it at least some seem to do really well in the competition as they have some clue how to perform on a stage.

I mean Daughtry had been doing stuff prior to AI, he just never got the right break. Of course he gets carp for going the AI route by some people, but I think he is right from some recent interview that if more never quite made its are in the competition you do get a different quality than what you get if everyone has to be someone that never even tried to work as a singer before.

Now how they market it compared to what it takes to actually have viable people in the competition that can actually have a recording career other than a manufactured single is a reasonable complaint. You can be pretty close to discovered and not have a current record deal, but I think they've always been clear that people can have had work as a singer and not have to be completely undiscovered in any way in the who can go to the auditions.

I do think some people feel they should be able to with no training and no work at all just have the talent to perform, win and sell albums for the rest of their lives. After all look at some of the auditions we get. Now I think that people who have been working as a singer should go through the same process as the others and not get sent right to the final judges, but I can't see telling them they can't ever try out.

I don't have a problem with people having experience auditioning. I think the beef that VFTW and others (incl me) have is that they continue to promote AI as tapping that unknown talent, blah blah blah.

Also...it appears from the article that a lot of these "plants" have long ties to AI producers, etc. and are being "asked" to audition. Remember the whole ushering in Jordan to the auditions last year...no way she waited 10 hours anywhere...

"RE: Christina, Brooke"
Posted by Snidget on 01-16-08 at 11:49 AM
It just seems every year there is a lot of complaining that such and so sang with a band, or sang the national anthem at some major sporting event, or heaven forfend has a CD already.

I do think that they should be more honest about the show, and I do think that going after a lot of people with AI ties is distasteful.

Although I don't really expect it to be any more real than any other reality TV show.

"RE: Christina, Brooke"
Posted by Ahtumbreez on 01-16-08 at 01:40 PM
I have a problem with plants that are shown to not be attached to the industry at all. As in Kristy Lee, who I really liked last night. With all the "country girl" charm, "I've lived in a log cabin since I was 9", "I buy and train horses" type schtick. When in reality she has pursued a singing career vigorously, including being signed.

But then there's the girl that was questioned and answered about her singing career and even said she has sung as Taylor Hicks backup singer.

Why show one of these as semi-professional and the other as completely as an amateur with un-discovered ability?

this is not a response to snidget but a general comment

A couple of things to think about, IMO.

There is how the contestant chooses to speak on camera. Some of them may be aware enough to play up certain things to make their story good.

Then there is what part of the tape they have of the person the producers want to show us. I don't know that they would go out of their way to out someone's story if they don't spill the whole thing on tape for them. The it is harder to edit in stuff than edit out stuff.

We don't know how much of which story they ever told on camera so some of it may be how much the peeps are capable of managing/manipulating their own back-story vs how much the show is managing/manipulating the back-stories.

I felt kinda sad for Star Wars chick. She plays up her dork-dom, then gets all upset because she's such a dork and didn't get through because of it.

Hello, play DOWN the dorkitude and see how it goes.

As for Willem Dafoe freak chick, she needs to have someone around her making sure she doesn't off someone. They were actually pretty complimentary of her and her singing, just that it didn't fit what they're looking for with AI. And they all agreed, not just Simon. Yet she goes off on Simon. And if she was doing all that JUST to get extra camera time, then "the acting" is what she needs to do, because she seemed legitimately disturbed to me.

"My thoughts on Philly"

Hi all! Welcome to Season 7!

Overall, i thought the Philly auditions were pretty BLAH. The same old retread of bad auditions, and most of the good auditions were not all that memorable. The only ones that stick in my head are...

* Mother with girl who has the genetic disease - DAMN GOOD.
* Last audition/nanny - she was the ONLY one that stood out as unique to me. i liked her attitude, liked her voice, liked her unique song choice. Very good, I hope she makes it.
* Dreadlock guy. Yes, you have a good voice. Yes, you look good. Yes, the girls will love you. But...the fact that your ego is the size of Texas will mean that IF you make the cut, you will make a bad decision and blow it at some point. (like trying to do a Stevie Wonder song early in the competition, or something similarly stupid)

Anyone know any inside info on how the auditions are done?
With thousands showing up, no way does everyone get to see S/P/R. Are there lots of pre-judging teams to listen to auditions and then to move only some on to the real judges?
Does Ryan have any influence in getting someone in to see S/P/R because he interviewed them outside?
What's the inside scoop?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15310288/ has a pretty good description of the process with what some of the rounds of judging are like.

I didn't read the link Snidget provided, but my mom had a co-worker who had a daughter who audtioned for Idol awhile back, and said there was something like 10 auditions people had to go through before actually seeing P/R/S.
