It's like a Burnett marathon tonight! Survivor, Apprentice, then Contender!

It's the music. It draws you in and you are helpless against it.

The music for the Contender, especially, it draws you in because it's so dramatic.

Never in a million years did I think I would be watching this show. But you know, I'm willing to give it a chance, and at least for tonight 'The Contender' will make it a trifecta.

"Sugar Ray"

How did I not know Sugar Ray Leonard was on this show. OK, now I'll watch. Does he get into the ring? The boy is fine. He's not a bad boxer either.

"RE: Sugar Ray"
Posted by ARnutz on 03-10-05 at 10:12 PM
Sugar Ray is there as a guide for the boxers, sort of like a mentor. He doesn't fight with the (contestant) boxers.

"RE: Sugar Ray"
Posted by kathliam on 03-10-05 at 10:14 PM
Bummer..no chance one of the contenders will utter the memorable words 'no mas, no mas'.

"RE: Sugar Ray"
Posted by thecontender on 03-11-05 at 04:23 AM
I know huh. Imagine being a young boxer and not just getting a chance to win 1 Million smackers but along the way you got to meet Sly. Getting tips from Sugar gots to be sweet. He was like miniture Muhamed Ali of the Welters and then some got to kick it with Never Age-ing George Foreman, who was not so loveable when he fought Ali. Funny how things change. Would be nice to see more people like Hearns and Hagler too and maybe even Julio Caesar Chavez just to mention a few old school greats;)

Ishe talking shiet about Ahmeds family? That was low. I would of came after Ishe with a knife

"Reid"
Posted by ARnutz on 03-10-05 at 10:14 PM
They showed his family, do you think that means he will be fighting tonight?

"RE: Reid"
Posted by volsfan on 03-10-05 at 10:16 PM
If Sunday is any indication...he fights and loses!

"Loser patterns..."
Posted by Ricky on 03-11-05 at 07:54 AM
Yes the pattern is whoever's family is shown the most throughout the show loses the fight.

This pattern better change soon or the show will get boring quickly.

In the end, those of us that walk away winning, win more than just a loss - Audrey, Apprentice loser

Cool! They are going to box to a final 8 and Alfonso is now in the final 8! He doesn't have to fight until 7 more go home!

"Excellent!"
Posted by ARnutz on 03-10-05 at 10:18 PM
What was on the necklace? Boxing gloves?

They also get a reward: to meet George Foreman...

and...

as a lovely gift, do you think he will give them all the George Foreman grill?

"RE: Excellent!"
Posted by kathliam on 03-10-05 at 10:19 PM
I was kinda surprised the chefs weren't using one.

"LOL!"
Posted by volsfan on 03-10-05 at 10:20 PM
They grilled the food and I was looking to see if it was a George Foreman model. I don't think it was...hehehehehe!

*snort*

Webby! This cracked me up!

I guess this is like something from his movies where Mick gives him the cuff link of Marciano and then Rock makes a necklace and gives it to Judas Tommy Gunn.

Hey doesn't George Foreman eat anything else other than ham burgers?

"Challenge"
Posted by ARnutz on 03-10-05 at 10:31 PM
Run up and down the stadium steps and retrive flags one by one, then solve a puzzle.

The west wins again and now they are in the locker room debating who will fight.

The team wants Ishe to take on Ahmed?

Another guy wants to take on Jonathan Reid...

What is up with Ishe? Is he afraid to fight Ahmed? Is he all talk and no do? What is up with him?

"RE: 03/10 Discussion Thread"
Posted by kathliam on 03-10-05 at 10:41 PM
I noticed he was giving props to Jonathan and telling him he was behind him and hoped he won. Is he just trying to get rid of Jesse and let him fight as the sacrificial lamb?

"RE: 03/10 Discussion Thread"
Posted by ARnutz on 03-10-05 at 10:44 PM
Ishe is a serious trash-talker which is typical of some boxers. I don't think he's afraid, it's just (I guess) somehow he needs to do it when the time is right (and he feels it).

It really is every man for himself because in the end there can only be one winner and if you jump too early, you could lose your chance.

"RE: 03/10 Discussion Thread"
Posted by munson on 03-11-05 at 00:15 AM
Ishe played the punk!

He made a point of commenting on how George Foreman's advice (OK, Sugar Ray Robinson's advice) changed how he thought about the entire competition. He seems like a smart guy so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt right now. It better pay off or he's gonna look like a little beyotch.

"RE: 03/10 Discussion Thread"
Posted by thecontender on 03-11-05 at 04:55 AM
I agree with you ARnutz.

And munson you are right. What foreman said at the table made Ishe slow his role and play the game but he should of just told the guys in the locker room his change of strategy and save some face. All he had to do was explain it.

I cannot believe the celebrities ringside - James Caan, the guy who played 'Paulie' in the Rocky movies, Tony Danza. Is this the Stallone factor?

"the kids!"
Posted by Cathy the Canadian on 03-10-05 at 10:52 PM
I'll tell you what I can't believe - that they bring their young kids to the fight! That little girl in the white dress, what is she, four? Watching her dad get pummled and bloodied. What the hell is that?

Other than that, I've enjoyed the show more than I thought I would for sure. Mark Burnett is the mac daddy of reality tv!

And the little boy in the white tux? Sitting ringside? Hope they have a good dry cleaner.

I'm sitting here in my house, all by my self, screaming 'go Jonathan' at the television. My cats think I'm crazy.

Jonathan seemed to me a much better boxer technically. Jesse looks like a big bruiser, that's all. Even his trainer told him to stop going for the one punch.

I can't believe I'm saying this. Burnett sucked me in again.

I was rooting for Jonathan too!

Sooo... Kath, see you here on Sunday... say 8 pm?

Why does Jonathan Reid talk about Jonathan Reid in the third person so much?

And did anyone else think -- at least for half a second -- that when George Foreman said "let's go get something to eat..." that Mark "King of Product Placement" Burnett had arranged for a George Foreman Grill cooked meal?

LMAO, talking about ones self in the third person has got to be some type of side affect of low lever repetitive frontal lobe damage.

Is this how the forum works? Just one large thread? I am new to the forum scene. I do not watch too many reality shows but I guess I do watch the 3 that will be on tonite. I tried to watch American Idol but I just can't seem to enjoy a bunch of people singing other peoples songs. I can get that here on any street corner.

I am working on a little website of the contender right now. nothing fancy but with my own comments;) BBL got to do the dishes before the show starts.

In other forums, we find it works best to have a general discussion thread while the episode is on the air, so that people in different time zones won't have the show "spoiled" for them.

After it's been aired everywhere, other threads can be started.

Welcome to the boards!

"Right"
Posted by AyaK on 03-11-05 at 00:03 AM
We found out that a lot of people on the West Coast didn't want to have the episode "spoiled" for them before they watched it ... but a lot of other people DID. Thus, during the show, we limit discussion to one thread. After it's shown in California, then people are free to start other threads (example: "Will the West sweep?").

"RE: Right"

Ah thank you all for not spoiling the fight for me. I got here before the show began and from what I was reading I thought Jonathan had won the fight. So I stopped reading just in case

Man what a great second episode. Jesse Brinkley gots big heart too. These guys are all crazy. I did not like the fact that Ishe became the Judas of the West Coast team. He should of at least in the locker room offerd an explination as to why he did not want to fight Ahmed Kadour. Instead he just sat there with his head hung low. He is losing respect. If I was Ahmed, I would run around making clucking noises like a chicken to get back at Ishe and get under his skin. (what is good for the goose...) It does look like sunday will be the night they get it on. I know it is dog eat dog world so I still have to stand behind Judas (Ishe). I love the way Joey was telling Jesse to use that upper cut. I can't wait to see Joey step in the ring. I think he will do well.

I wonder if Jesse and Ishe will be getting along? Or will there be tension on the yard I wish today was sunday ~

You have to admit Team West Coast is crazy for not going after the would be weaker, smaller or younger opponents. They have been risking it big time.

Weeeeheeee My boy Gomez aint got to fight until much later and he got a necklace like the one Rocky gave Tommy Gun.

ok I just thought I would ramble on ) Now I am gone. See you all Sunday.

What's with the old trainer guy? Is he supposed to be the Burgess Meridth character, only for both teams? I expect the editors will include a couple of his generic ring side shouts during every fight. Even though it isn't clear which figthter he is shouting at.

He seems to randomly pick one corner or another for the fights. And quick, anyone see Jackie Kallen anywhere but the closing credits tonight?

I saw flashes of her in the background of a couple shots. I will be sure and make fun of her in the summary!

The only time I saw her was during the fight and she was sitting next to Sly and Sugar Ray in the audience.

Maybe she's playing the UTR character?

"Jackie"

>He seems to randomly pick one corner or another for the
>fights.

If you watched the "extended" version of the first-week fights, he was seen yelling at both Peter and Alfonso between rounds. But there weren't any shots of him yelling at Jesse this week ... at least, none that I remember.

>And quick, anyone see Jackie Kallen anywhere but the closing
>credits tonight?

Webby, you already know this from reading my summary of Ep. 2, but an unused clip on Yahoo! shows Ishe leaving the auditorium during the press conference, apparently to quit the show. Jackie follows him out, catches up to him at the corner, and talks him into calming down and not letting Jesse chase him off the show, then she accompanies him back in.

Great clip. That's the second episode in a row that there has been a great clip of Ishe on the Web (which means it was prepared for inclusion on the show) that wasn't actually shown on the show. Considering that Ishe has been the dominant character on the show so far, even though he hasn't fought yet, there has to be a reason for these clips being left out. In this case, leaving the clip out meant that Jackie got left out too, but the reason the clip was missing HAD to be because of Ishe.

"RE: Jackie"
Posted by VegasFightWriter on 03-13-05 at 06:48 AM
Given what you know of other Burnett shows, do you read anything into these Ishe clips being left off the show? Or is it just that he is in it so much already?

"RE: 03/10 Discussion Thread"
Posted by FarwestChips on 03-11-05 at 01:02 PM
Ishe made the correct call, I was afraid Ishe would go out looking to prove something early.
No need to fight the second best until he knows for sure who second best is.
Ishe has paid his dues, and while I still don’t pick him to win it all yet. He is still the best most proven fighter of the 16.
I thought Reid would do better, I thought he would be in the final 8 at the least, But weight loss hurt RJJ and I guess age and weight loss hurt Reid as well.
As far as Ishe letting the guys know why he wanted to wait to fight Ahmed, hey make this as much as a team sport as you want. The fact is when you’re a fighter and the bell rings you are alone.
You have no friends, no family, and your trainer exist only for about 15 seconds between rounds. Object Permanence is a luxury a fighter cant afford in the ring.
And hey this is pro boxing, how about some 8 ounce gloves? I could cut a guy with my kids hulk gloves faster than with the feather pillows these guys are being given.
