"Top 4 May 8th East Coast Spoiler Thread"

Posted by Snidget on 05-08-07 at 03:47 PM
Please keep all sig-pic free discussion of tonights Bee-Gee-Extravaganza on this thread until the disco ball stops spinning and the floor lights are turned off on the West Coast.

Once again I will be fashionably late to the start of the party, so if someone can do a post with the name of the idol in the title as they sing until I get home, that would be lovely. It helps to keep the discussion organized a bit.

PSA: I probably will be out of town next week and without a computer. So if someone can start the threads for next week, that will be great! I could always start them before I leave, but then they may get lost. (The arrangements for this trip have been driving me nuts so I may just be in the looney bin next week suffering from "exhaustion" instead).

Should things get cancelled I'll start threads up soon enough that peeps will know I'm here.

Man - can this girl do any wrong?

ETA - I totally disagree with the judges on that - I thought she hit a home run on it.

Which song did she sing, and what did they say?

That was nice, but predictable. But, that's why we like Melinda. We know what we're getting.

Melinda sang "Love you inside and out"

Randy - didn't thrill him - just good

Paula - great vocal, didn't like the arrangement

Simon - didn't like it at all.

Nice. Made it into an old-school R&B ballad.

The fact that alot of BeeGees stuff was done in falsetto will make keys etc. alot easier for the women than other male artist's catalogs would be.

I don't think the judges really didn't like it, more like they're just running out of things to say.

And really, I'm happy to hear her do a fairly simple, straight-forward number -- she doesn't have to tear the roof off the church for me every single time.

And DUH -- if you're doing 2 songs, there should be some contrast. The 2nd one needs to be the showstopper. It's called programming. They should know that.

Blake sang "You should be dancin'"

Randy - seemed off - like a bad school performance

Paula - started off shaky - seemed off

Simon terrible

Posted by tamarama on 05-08-07 at 09:44 PM
I think it was fun.

Hey, BeeGees music was lightly sung, not always "exciting" stuff. What did the judges expect with these songs?

Ok, maybe there were a couple of whiffed pitches - but certainly not horrible issues.

I think the beat-boxing worked really well, and a "weird discoteque" is an appropriate place for a "Blake does BeeGees" performance.

Are they doing the "anti-pimp" with Blake & Mindy?

"Lakisha Jones"

Staying Alive.

"RE: Lakisha Jones"
Posted by Snidget on 05-08-07 at 08:07 PM
She sounds softer than the music for a lot of that.
At least she seemed more animated than usual.

Randy. Good thing you guys got two songs. These songs don't need to be changed that much melodically. Tried to do too much.

Paula. Taking the tempo down to every one ready to be dancing down a bit.

Simon. No kiss tonight, baby. Back to the shouting. Verging on scary in parts. Bring it back on the second song. Not great tonight so far.

Sounds like I did not missmuch.

Yeesh.

The coaching footage made me nervous. I was right to be nervous.

I hated that.

Each week, Melinda shows how versatile she is by nailing the theme while still always feeling & sounding like Melinda.

OTOH, each week, Lakisha beats the crap out of her songs until they sound like Lakisha regardless of the week's theme.

She may have a hell of a voice, but she's not very musical, and she's not much of a performer.

"Blake - You Should Be Dancing"

Well - it seems that I am alone on this one - once again - I loved it! I thought it was a very creative, innovative version of the classic.

I'm guessing that means the judges didn't like it? Come on, give a girl a bone, here!

"RE: Blake - You Should Be Dancing"

I'll close that door for now....

That said - they weren't thrilled with it. Shame - I quite liked it.

They haven't liked anything yet - is that because everyone sings twice?

"RE: Blake - You Should Be Dancing"

Seems that way, bullz. Simon always uses that "lucky you've got two songs tonight" line!

Simon. Best performance so far, we are back in the competition.

OW. MY EARS. That very brief, shrieky "warm up" she did with Ryan is bad bad bad. It's not a valid warm up. Stop it. Tells me something about her training right there.

Barry-pimpin-Jordin was a little over the top.

She sounded better than she has for the past few weeks, but there were too many ticks (whoa...mmmhmmm...wooo-oo-oo) and some of the runs felt tacked on rather than organic.

She also didn't sell it emotionally - it looked utterly insincere.

And now she's eye-farking the camera.

I've really lost the love.

*giggle* wants to leave the line out about being a loser.

Randy: Second song, much better, great ending, you know you got it going on

Paula: Beautiful vocal. you are the queen of Vocals. I'm waiting for you to jump out and leave the technique behind

Simon: The second half of that song has put you into the semifinals.

I kind of expected Melinda to "Al Green" - it up. Grind it out a bit more. Well done though.

"RE: Melinda Doolittle 2"
Posted by tamarama on 05-08-07 at 10:08 PM
Beautiful.

See, it doesn't bother me when people sing softly - if well done it takes more skill than belting.

She made it really soulful.

And because it's her last number, she threw a big ol' ending on it. Cool. I bet if that had been her first number, she would have ended it softly too.

Love her.

Not sure what the hell Paula was talking about. Throw away your technique and...wha?

Yes, he will go anywhere with ME!!!!

Randy: I do think that this was better than the last one, but you don't need to beatbox on every song.

Paula: There ain't nothing old about Blake. You are a contemporary rebel in this competition. I enjoyed it even though I don't know this song. Sang Spot on key.

Simon. I don't know what that song was, it was tuneless I don't know why you chose it. I can't say that these have been good performances.

"RE: Blake Lewis 2"

Blake, Blake, Blake.

I love you in a hetro, homo, trans, schoolgirl, schoolboy, "pick your way kinda love", way, but that, didn't do it for me.

Sorry pal. That said - I loved, loved your first perfomance. Really, I did. (Shhhhhh - no one here knows squat)

"RE: Blake Lewis 2"
Posted by tamarama on 05-08-07 at 10:12 PM
I must confess, I don't know this song.

BUT, it's got an interesting melody & a little more grit than alot of their songs. It sounded pretty contemporary, and not just because Blake was singing it.

Though Blake did a really good job with it too.

See - he's got a really good range & skills beyond beat-boxing. His tone is really clear & easy on his big notes.

Another wise decision to just throw a tiny splash of

And - Randy, didn't you just tell Blake to beat-box on EVERYTHING a few weeks ago? Idiot.

I really think Simon's anti-pimping him.

"RE: Blake Lewis 2"
Posted by Snidget on 05-08-07 at 10:22 PM
Yep, he avoided beat boxing for a lot of weeks, which got him judged badly as he wasn't doing his thing.

Then he finally brings it back and it's all "do that, do more of that"

Then when he does it for the second week in a row, he gets "you are doing it too much"

I would if he is doing more than one song in a night probably only do it on one, but the songs when he takes the time to do all that seem to be better overall than when he doesn't. It may be a bit of a crutch, but it seems to me to up the level of the rest of the song when he does it.

"RE: Blake Lewis 2"
Posted by bzooti on 05-09-07 at 00:19 AM

well I finally caught up with y'all, and this is as good a place as any to summarize on blake.

i don't think it's a crutch -- I'm in seattle, and I've read the local media on him. the beat-boxing is who he is. it's what he does when he's not trying to blend in on Idol. he's been doing it in local clubs for a while, on his own and with bands.

I thought his first number was really well done. creative, interesting, and after the first bit it was totally in tune.

I found the second one kind of boring. in tune though.

but Simon's anti-pimping, as someone up there ^ ^ said, is really obvious.

especially when he concluded by announcing that lakisha and blake are in trouble, give me a break.

blake is so far off Simon's personal pop radar, I shouldn't be surprised. and yet I am, over and over, when he's so wrong.

I guess it's because he's so universally revered as the one who's right, the one who tells the truth.

Yesterday he got caught by a film crew at the Ivy. they asked who was going to win? he matter of factly said Jordin has the lead right now.

tonight I really thought Paula was astute in what she said to Blake. wish I'd taped it. But she gets him. an interesting thing, really. give the girl some credit.

Can I just say he's regained his hotness.

He was yummy during the hey day with the hair, the face, the tight pants - Mmmmmmmm.

He's back now with great hair. Although he's grey, he's still got it.

Dead Lakisha is back, well she almost woke up at the end.

Paula: You are a champ.

Simon: You and Blake are vulnerable tonight.

"RE: Lakisha Jones 2"

I'm with MC -- this is THE BeeGees song. lovelovelovelove.

Not so much love?

The overly indulgent diva-treatment that Lakisha gave it.

NEWS FLASH: BeeGees songs are NOT diva songs.

Melinda understood that. Lakisha did not.

I think she's going home.

"Judge Judy"
Posted by whimsey on 05-08-07 at 08:39 PM
I missed something there. Did Ryan introduce Simon's actual mother, or was he making a joke about Judge Judy?

The applause was quite disrespectful if it was really Simon's mom.

Barry's comments on her high notes were interesting. I don't think she's capable yet of doing them softly. That will come with time.

Am I the only one getting a Paris Bennett "this song is too old for her & a little creepy" vibe?

And yes, screechy. And shrill. And again, insincere. She's schmacting. And the key change was cheezy. (so were Lakisha's)

I'm probably going to feel lonely, but I didn't like that.

ETA: WOW! I shouldn't have hit post before I heard the judges -- holy cow! Paula with the "you look beautiful" and Simon with the "old, pageanty"!

I agree with them, I'm just surprised they actually said it!

Gahhh! I did not really like any of them tonight.

Maybe this is how the Bon Jovi hard core fans felt last week. I remember all of these songs and I do not think anyone really rose to the occasion.

I was disappointed in Blake's song selection. The second one was better but it is not a song people know.

Sigh.

Melinda did better on the first song than the judges gave her credit for doing--the pimp was in for Jordin.

Blake--tooo much beat boxing on his first song. I felt like it was a crutch this time.

Lakisha--just no. Don't wear spandex leggings, especially on national tv in a competition. Your outfit was too distracting. Someone gave you really bad advice. From the neck up you looked great.

Jordin--this was good but I felt like Kat from last season had inhabited Jordin's body--she sounded and did some of Kat's vocal stuff.

Melinda 2--ok. But it seemed like stock Melinda, like the judges are saying.

Blake 2--it was better but he was totally depimped by the Randy and Simon. Interesting that Simon or Randy mentioned the "young" appeal that Blake had--almost like it was a negative?

Lakisha 2--they want you gone, even if you got to sing third. I really like this song and I was really rooting for it to go well. Nope

Jordin 2--in the pimp spot! Seems the producers do not want to gamble about your advancing this week. Barry Gibb even pimped you. Then Simon curiously depimped you some after you sang.

It was not a stellar night.

That? was absolutely sucktastic! Sheesh. This was even worse than country night! Not even my Blakey made tonight enjoyable. What a disappointment.

*sigh*

Off to vote for Blake anyway. He's the only reason to watch this show anymore. The rest of 'em put me to sleep.

I haven't seen it yet, and I'm afraid I'm going to echo everything you just said.

*sigh*

I even already know his phone numbers. 90 minutes to go ....

Blech. I totally agree. I will call this the suckiest night of the suckiest season ever of AI. I kept a pillow over my belly so it wouldn't offend the babes or cause them to go deaf.

Is this season not over with already?

* OK, so the spoilers were correct this week. Way to go!
* What's up with Barry Gibb's voice and mouth?
* Dang, Simon was bitchy tonight.
* One word, Lakisha. Boring.
* Simon was 100% right re: Jordin's 2nd song
* Melinda, you can sing anything. You're amazing.
* Blake, continue being yourself no matter what the heck the judges say. I thought you did very well tonight.
* Jordin, even though I'm not a fan of Babs, you are NO Barbra Streisand. You're 17, singing "I am a woman in love...". Major Princess P syndrome there....
* Its amazing how with Idol you can go from one week which everyone is amazing, to another where the bore-factor is turned to 11. Not an exciting night.
* I think Kiki is going home.
* "House" is perhaps the best show on television now, right next to "Heroes"

>>What's up with Barry Gibb's voice and mouth?<<

I caught that too -- sad to say, I think it's a set of really poorly fitting, new dentures. He should have upgraded.

That said, for 61 yrs old, he's aging with more dignity than some pop stars can say.

Glad I'm not the only one that felt the Princess P problem.

I would like to add: just how small is Ryan Seacrest? Is there anybody he is taller than? Tonight when he was standing next to Jordin, it was just so odd. Anybody else bothered by this?

Ryan, Simon and Randy are all about the same height.

he may be taller than Simon, because Simon has these amazing high-heeled boots he wears under those long jeans of his.

...and don't forget Jordin is the spawn of a football player -- she's a tall girl.

Probably wearing 4" heels too.
