"S7 Gufu Award: Final Vote"

That final vote I keep mentioning is upon us. I have gathered the finest gufus from across the land and assembled them here in one little area for the Gufu final vote. Before you are 28 Contestant nominees and 40 Production nominees, and there will be one champion to join the above nominees and one Production champion. Here's how it will work.

I will list all the nominees in two lists below, and for each category (Contestant and Production) you are allowed to list a 1st place, a 2nd place, a 3rd place, and a 4th place vote. Be sure to distinguish placement. Give a 1st, a 2nd, a 3rd, and a 4th, because each is assigned a different point value. Lists that do not explicitly state which is 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th will not be considered. You don't have to give 2nd, 3rd, or 4th if you choose not to, but if you have more than one, distinguish or be ignored. Once voting dies down, I will tabulate the votes and award the winners. Here's how the voting will break down, and this is true in both categories.

1st place votes are worth 10 points.
2nd place is worth 6.
3rd is worth 3.
4th is worth 1.
If there is a tie at the end of the season between 1st and 2nd, whichever received more 1st place votes will win. If that is still tied, whichever received votes from more people will win. If that is still tied, I will go through the original nominations and pick the winner from that. Suffice it to say my procedure may be more complicated than the tiebreakers the NFL uses, but at least I won't be drawing rocks.

first, my short list:

1a - Morgan's poor market strategy
3b - Morgan votes out Lill and keeps lazy Darrah
4a - Burton throws IC
5a - Michelle chugs smoothie
6c - Osten. nuff said
7a - Osten. nuff said
7b - Morgan alienates Lill
10b - Tijuana blabs to Jon
13b - Darrah tells Lill she won't take her to F2

and my actual votes:
1st - 5a - could have singlehandedly saved herself - you don't get too many chances to do that in this game - and instead singlehandedly killed herself. one of the worst moves ever.
2nd - 10b - had a solid F4 deal with S/C, and got herself booted for a vote she didn't need
3rd - 13b - duh
4th - 1a - the difference between what Sandra did for Drake and what Morgan didn't do really set the tone for the whole game

i didn't include osten because, frankly, i'm tired of talking about him. the decision to bot lill i decided not to include because she got to come back and darrah didnt win anyway, and the alienating of lill i left out because at that point it prbably would not have mattered what morgan did because of their previous actions. like lill, burton got to come back, so the result didn't matter so much, and it was not so much bad strategy as bad result

and as a side note, S6's winner should be Dave breaking up Heidi and Jenna in Ep5, and then not booting Heidi! he is singlarly to blame for the awful S6 season! damn you, Dave, damn you!


my list for production:
2b - no photo finish
4d - kidnapping (more for the sense that it was rigged only for morgan than for the actual occurrence)
6b - casting of osten
7g - never mention Jenna again!!!!!!
8b/9a - too many "elimination" challenges (and not interesting variations)
9f - casting of duhruh
10a - how do you spell liaison?
11b - group reward. maybe my least favorite "twist" of the season - especially that it randomly allowed one group to have it's strongest swimmer against the others' weakest swimmer

ok, even though i didn't vote production most of the season, i guess i'll go ahead and throw some votes around:

1) 6b - ok, osten must be mentioned
2) 9a - one elimination challenge is great, if it's interesting. none of the elimination challeneges were particularly interesting in this installment (maybe they never are, i don't know)
3) 11b (see above)
4) 2b - like the treasure, another example of tired over-hype. for some reason this one bothered me more, and i'm gonna hit submit before i change my mind

This is a good thing. Really, it is.
The gufu should go to the one who voted for this as a contender.
That person did not mention the countless times we could see Christa or Sandra or "T" or Darrah or Nicole in wet, tight fitting clothing that "outlined" their breasts. Millions of people watched the show and either didn't notice or don't care. I don't see why this was an issue from a production point of view. More like an issue for the poster who cannot stop themselves from checking out peoples nether regions. Then blaming others for making them look. Plllbbbttt!

1. 12a. Burton Takes Jon On Reward This was just plain stupid. How could two self-professed intelligent men think that they could escape the game overnight and the remaining three women wouldn't understand the pecking order? Maybe they're not so bright after all.
2. 10a. Sandra and Christa Vote with Jon This was the move that guaranteed Christa would be out soon. Dumb.
3. 7b. Morgans Alienate Lill I don't know if the Morgans could have kept any sort of allegiance from Lill, but they should have tried. Andrew's stupid speech about how voting her out was like voting out a family member and then Andrew's and Ryan's disgust about her "turning on" them was hilarious.
4. 6a. Jon Spills Beans to Morgan About IC4 This was stupid because it lit any fire the Morgans were capable of having lit. This was what motivated them to win more ICs.


Production
1. 4d. Morgan Gets to Steal a Drake Member I can't think of another twist in this game that appeared so staged. One could almost hear MB prompting Jeff, "Remember, if the Morgans win, they get to take a Drake back to camp. If the Drakes win, no deal."
2. 6b. Casting of Osten Ummm, I thought MB and Co. gave tons of personality tests before casting people. Right. This loser should have been shot out of a cannon at the first audition.
3. 9d. Guilting RC Winners Into Giving Up Their Rewards It got to the point where you were evil if you wanted to enjoy the reward that you earned.
4. 13a. Jeff Accidentally Says Lill Won at Reunion Slip of the tongue, but a stupid slip to make.

This led to his own ouster and put Drake in a tailspin. Drake was in position to win all the ICs--which would have been amazing and fun to watch.

#2 13c. Lill's Poor Jury Performance.
She probably would have lost anyway, being an Outcast and all, but still--she could have tried to be strategic or even nice! I still have no idea why everyone kept saying Lill was so nice.

#3 10b. Tijuana Blabs to Jon.
And is handed her ass. They didn't need Jon--people are voted out by a majority--not a consensus--duh!

#4 12a. Burton Takes Jon On Reward.
The height of arrogance! They were so sure the women were too dumb & clueless to challenge them for control.

#1 4b. Excessive Hype for Weak Treasure.
This was a pirate-themed event that both tribes (well, mostly Drake) put a lot of effort into. There should have been pirate bling bling for all!

#2 7d. Sudden Merge After Outcasts Return.
This was like a lesson in how to diffuse drama from a dramatic twist.

#3 7f. Absence of Expected "Wedding".
I hate hyping in previews for something that doesn't happen. It's is extremely careless.

#4 9b. IC Favors People On Top Half of Target.
Even if they did draw for position on the target, and even if "fate" (as in what position you drew) is always a factor on Survivor--this challenge sucked on many levels.

2nd-13c. Lill's Poor Jury Performance (Although I doubt she would have won she could have at least gone out with some dignity.)

3rd-12a. Burton Takes Jon On Reward (As if we didn't already despise them enough, they run off for a romantic get together and talk about how they don't like women...cringe worthy TV.)

4th-7a. Osten Throws In the Towel. Again. (Too many people dream of being on this show to pass up the opportunity to bash Osten once more. Bash the whiner...bash him!!!)


Production Nominees

1st-7a. Outcast Tribe Twist (I had a little trouble with this one. On one hand it made for interesting discussions and plot twists; but it came down to what was really the big lie of Survivor, it wasn't the dead grandma but the statement "fire means life". THAT was the big lie of this season. That's why I gave the Outcast twist my number one.)

2nd- 9b. IC Favors People On Top Half of Target (Personally I think most of the challenges were rigged, but this one was responsible for Rupert's eventual departure, so this gets my Gufu vote.)

3rd-5d. Shower Issue From Website Never Happens (A standard thing this season but this one really irked me. I mean they tease us with a fight and we get the cameraman's homemade semi-porno of Darrah instead? Come on...there wasn't that much to look at anyway!!!)

4th-2b. Promised "Photo Finish" Never Takes Place (The only way this could have qualified as a "photo finish" is if the Drake's had their picture taken celebrating their win while the Morgan's were still trying to untie the knot holding their map closed.)


I would have voted for, Ryan O.'s "Package" Visible in Relay, but I'm still not seeing what everyone else did! (I can't figure out if I'm bummed about that or not!)

Even with all the Gufu's, this was a great season to watch and talk (and sometimes argue) about! Thanks to all

Woo-Hoo! Gotta say, DEVILRAYS, you did a great job running the Gufu Award this season. Hope you had a barrel of fun doing it! And I'm really looking forward to voting for ASS Gufus!

And what a wild season! None of the gufu nominees really jump out at you as they have done in past seasons (Rotu4), but they did keep 'em coming all season. It should be very interesting what the final results turn out.

1st- 4a. Burton Gets Drake to Throw IC. Drake could have conceivably gone into the merge 8-2 or at worst 7-3. But Burt's strategy sent them into a downward spiral until the merge.
2nd- 13a. Lill Votes Out Jon at F3. While I'm not entirely convinced that she would've beaten him, it would've been much closer than a 6-1 vote.
3rd- 5a. Michelle Subverts Drake Plan, Chugs Her Smoothie. It was actually a good plan, and while I'm not sure it would've worked (Darrah works with dead people, she can probably stomach anything), it might have saved her and put someone else on the chopping block.
4th- 12a. Burton Takes Jon On Reward. Gave the girls a chance to talk strategy without them there, and eventually set up Burt's boot. Again.

1st- 6b. Casting of Osten. If I had been ANYONE who was passed over for this edition, I would be SO pissed.
2nd- 9a. IC9 Out of Players' Hands. One time is fine and in the spirit of the game, but twice isn't right.
3rd- 9b. IC Favors People On Top Half of Target. Not only was Immunity out of the players' hands, but if you were on the bottom of the circle, you were screwed.
4th- 10a. Jeff Screws Up IC Judging. Just a funny moment in Survivor history.


Won't it be dull when we rid ourselves of all these demons haunting us, to keep us company?

Wow, lots of great choices, and a fun way to recap the entire season.

About my choices, I think a contestant Gufu is only worthy if it directly caused that person to get booted, prohibited a group from advancing, or prevented a person from eventually reaching the F2. All other Gufus are just entertainment. For production picks, my thinking is that the Gufu has to have affected the outcome of the game or caused viewers to gnash their teeth in rage.

Contestant picks:
1. 3b. Morgan Votes Out Worker Lill, Saves Lazy Darrah
(Boom. No Morgans in F2. Group bonehead decision.)
2. 12a. Burton Takes Jon On Reward
(Boom. Jon and Burton out of F2.)
3. 7b. Morgans Alienate Lill
(Not that they had much of a chance, but they didn't even try.)
4. 4a. Burton Gets Drake to Throw IC
(Stupid, stupid. Though it didn't really affect Burton's future.)

Production picks:
1. 2a. Three Non-Swimmers on Morgan (Fine if there are no water-based challenges.)
2. 6b. Casting of Osten (Obviously.)
3. 9c. Jeff Reads All Votes at TC9 (Not that it made a difference, but still.)
4. 5a. Predictable Gross-Out Eating Challenge (Really dull. Doesn't even tie into 'survival' aspect of the game.)
5. This outta be an option - "Inconsistency between website promos and actual episodes."

I'm only going to vote for Contestant Gufus. To me the worst gufus are those by which individuals directly screwed themselves.

FIRST PLACE:
12a. Burton Takes Jon On Reward

The single worst mistake, because it cost Burton the game when he had the win in the bag, imo. He was strategizing better than anyone up until that point, and had he taken Lill on the reward and reaffirmed their alliance, leaving Jon behind to keep tabs on Sandra and Darrah, he'd have been home free. I don't think throwing the challenge was anywhere near as big a mistake as this was.


SECOND PLACE:
1c. Nicole Shoots Off Her Mouth

Why??? Why??? It cost her the chance to even get in the game.

THIRD PLACE:
10b. Tijuana Blabs to Jon

Again, why???

FOURTH PLACE:
13c. Lill's Poor Jury Performance

I rank this above Lill voting Jon out at F3, because if she kept Jon for F2 but gave the same jury performance I think she'd still have lost. I doubt she could have beaten Sandra with her best effort in front of the jury, but that was the most wretched accounting of oneself I've ever seen at the final vote.

We think alike on this one, Brownroach. I thought Jon had about a 50/50 chance of talking himself into a win if he reached F2 against Darrah or Lill, but then I saw how Lill blew her chances away with her kamikaze performance in the final TC. Gotta give her credit for doing it guns a-blazin', of course.
