This might be helpful for establishing the boat width...

I know I've seen a mention of the boat's length, but I can't seem to find it now

Love Cruise Gets Real On the Mandalay?

This is the story of 16 singles who were chosen to go on a 10-day cruise together to set a course for love and romance as their lives are video taped twenty-four hours a day. Sound familiar? If you've ever seen "Survivor," "Big Brother" or MTV's "The Real World," or "Road Rules," the storyline may ring a few bells. A new television series, "FOX's Love Cruise," which is set to air on FOX January 4, 2001, will revolve around the love lives of eight single woman and eight single men between the ages of 22 and 35 as they embark on a southern Caribbean cruise aboard Windjammer Barefoot Cruises' 72-passenger Mandalay
.
Bunim-Murray Productions and FOX have the sailing vessel on charter for seven weeks, along with Windjammer's 94-passenger Amazing Grace, which they chartered for the production crew. While the Mandalay's Captain Stuart Larcombe will be sailing the singles on the ship's unique Venezuelan itinerary, Shannon Manno, Windjammer's vice president of sales, said that the course has flexed a little. "I think they plan to visit the ABC Islands as well," she said.

Windjammer isn't really a stickler for strict itineraries anyway, as their ships' courses mostly depend on the weather. Although the Mandalay's usual summer and fall route visits Grenada, Los Testigos, Puerto La Cruz, Isla Margarita, Mochima National Park, Chimana Segunda, Arapo and Playa Blanca -- "FOX's Love Cruise" is set to sail from Grenada to Aruba, with the ABC Islands including Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao.

The Mandalay's intimate, casual and small ship atmosphere along with its exotic itinerary actually fits right into the "love, romance and singles coupling up" theme of the new series. And the show will certainly draw attention to the "small ship" cruise lines as well as Windjammer's popular singles cruises.

According to FOX, at the beginning of each episode, the singles will couple up to share a cabin to compete in a daily series of physical and relationship games; and at the end of each episode, the men will vote to remove one woman, and the woman to remove one man from the ship.

Sounds to us a bit like "Survivor" meets "The Love Boat." At the end of the seven weeks, one couple will remain as the winners, and of course receive a grand prize, which hasn't been decided upon yet. Taping of the new series, which began this week, is scheduled to end October 4.

Here is some info about the ship from Windjammers site (it's done in Flash)

http://www.windjammer.com/flash/home.htm

S.V. Mandalay

Berths: 72 Crew: 30 Length: 236 ft Beam: 33 ft Draft: 15 ft

Queen of the fleet, this 236-foot Barquentine was built in 1923 for financier E.F. Hutton and christened HUSSAR. In the 1930's she was sold to shipping magnate George Vettlesen who re-christened her VEMA. Later put into service by Columbia University sailing more than one and a quarter million miles worldwide. Evidence gathered on her voyage confirmed the theory of continental drift.

Joining the Windjammer fleet in 1982, MANDALAY went through an extensive renovation. She is now unparalleled, offering the ultimate in comfort and style.

S.V. Mandalay

Windjammer's S/V Mandalay was once the plaything of the rich and famous, fought in the "Battle of the Atlantic" and even served as a floating laboratory. Once considered the most luxurious yacht in the world, Mandalay was designed in 1923 as a three-masted Barquentine by famed architects Cox & Stevens. She was the dreamboat of financier E. F. Hutton and his wife, Marjorie Merriweather Post, who named her Hussar. In the 1930s she was sold to shipping magnate George Vettlesen who renamed her Vema and volunteered her for picket duty during W.W.II. where, as a member of the U.S. Navy's Coastal Picket Patrol -- the famous "Hooligan Navy" of the Battle of the Atlantic - she spent the war searching for German U-boats off the coast of Long Island.

In 1953, the magnificent tall ship functioned as a floating laboratory for Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory. After sailing more than 1.25 million miles, it is estimated that nearly half of the existing knowledge of the ocean floors, specifically confirmation of Wegener's continental drift theory, was gathered by this vessel. In 1981 she was retired as a scientific lab and joined Windjammer in 1982 and was renamed Mandalay. After two years of extensive renovation, she features two deck cabins with private sundeck for ultimate privacy, as well as a state-of-the-art bridge complete with the latest navigation equipment.

Mandalay sails 10 knots under full sail (about 12 miles per hour) and is 236-feet long with a 33-foot beam and a 15-feet draft . She accommodates up to 72 Shipmates in 36 cabins and carries a crew of 28.

Windjammer? Aren't they the ones who are probably still advertising in Playboy their nude swingers cruises? This is too perfect! Now that would be gonzo TV!

Why do I really feel like going on a cruise now?

You want to go on a cruise now because those sailing vessels are the best way to go. I've been on two Windjammer cruises and they are the best. I was never on the Mandy, but I was on her sister ship, the Fantome (it was lost at sea in Mitch, and was a great loss of crew and ship) and I had the best times. The ships themselves are awesome, beautiful, things. Magnificient is the word that comes to mind for me, and then when they raise the sail to Amazing Grace, w/bagpipes playing and the wind in your hair and the sun, it is awe-inspiring, truly a most do for anyone that likes the sun, sea, and the freedom of sailing on a vessel of this sort. Not to mention the wonderful crews that are on these ships, they will do anything to make your trip more comfortable and fun and I have to add, safe also. If I would ever go on a cruise again, the only way I would go would be on a Windjammer Barefoot cruise...especially since I saw Capt. Stewart was on this cruise, I'd sail with him again anytime. He's a cool guy, a good Captian, one of WJ's best...just do it...Wonderland

I agree, wonderland, there is no comparison. I was fortunate enough to spend a semester at sea on a schooner. There was little luxury but still formed the opinion right then and there that sailing on a windjammer would be the *only* way to go

Moonbaby, I would love to hear about your semester at sea, I bet that was a awesome experience!!!On the Windjammers we never lacked for luxury, we had ac in the cabins, lots of food, fun and sun. Snorkelin and deep sea diving, fishing and just hanging out having a good time. There is a certain atmosphere onboard those ships, kinda primative, just in touch with nature and the sea and yourself. I think it was a very sensual experience, nothing at all like the huge cruise ships (Carnival) and you get to know your shipmates. I developed several friends on those cruises and I still keep in touch with them. So, I'm with you, it's Windjammer or nothing...Wonderland

After reading this, am I the ONLY ONE who suddenly has no desire to go on a cruise? Lost at sea??? As in sunk? As in dead? No thanks, I'll pass on Windjammer...

Btw, I'm also not sure on your "sister" boat comment -- the history of the boat makes is sound like it was some one of a kind, custom built vessel -- or by "sister" are you just referring to another Windjammer-owned vessel?

"RE: Wide shot of boat width..."

oops, sorry for the misunderstanding there, I didn't mean for it to sound like that. First of all, Fantome was right in the middle of Hurricane Mitch in I believe it was 1998. She tried to outrun it (which is what I'm told is done when they are faced with bad weather), but Mitch backtracked and caught the Fantome right smack dab in the middle of the mess, and the result was the loss of partial crew and the ship. After repeated attempts to find out more information, I broke down and bought a book called "The Ship and the Storm", to find out what really happened and if it should have happened. As it turns out, yes, the ships do try to outrun bad weather, they do not dock and let the ship tied down like I thought they should. My Uncle was in the Navy for many years and he said that is what they do. Anyway, the best way to avoid the bad weather is to not go on a cruise of ANY kind during hurricane season. Yes, they (WJ) lost 31 crew members in that tragedy, all non-essential crew and passengers were left off on a safe island, but the captain (Captain Guy) and the rest of his crew were lost at sea. A very sad fate for some great people. Technically the same thing could happen on any ship during the hurricane season.
Now, about the sister ship, I guess I picked up to much WJ language while on my cruises. That simply means that it is the same type of ship/sailing vessel. While the Fantome was larger than the Mandy, they are all basically the same ship. Wooden ships with tall sails, wonderful teak decks and lots of atmosphere. While they were all acquired from different places and people, they have all been refitted to reflect the same type of sailing vessel. At this point I believe Wj has a total of 4 or 5 ships of this type and two larger ships. The Amazing Grace is one that they use to restock the wooden ships between voyages and they also carry passengers. They also acquired another ship and in 98, she had her maiden voyage, that one is called the Legacy, while I wasn't on that one, my Mom was. It is a newer version of the wooden ship and Mom said it wasn't the same. There is a certain atmosphere aboard those vessels that you don't get on the big cruise liners!!
I hope I've answered your questions and once again I'm sorry for the confusion...if I can help you with anything else or you have more questions...post them...I'll try to help you out...Wonderland

Hi Wonderland!

I am also a past Windjammer sailor and will in fact be on board Mandalay the week of September 9 when Love Cruise debuts! I was hoping Capt. Matt would have been the Capt. during the filming (very nice eye candy) but I believe it was Capt. Stewart. I can't wait to see the show, after returning.

This will be my 5th week on Windjammer, and as an early 30-something, highly recommend the experience.

What I really can't wait to see is what "extras" were added to the ship to make all those Love Cruisers more comfortable

Windjammer's on their own are pretty wild trips . . . it will be interesting to see what of the normal activities were retained.

Welcome JammerGirl!
Any information you can share would be great. One of our regular posters is on the show and can't tell us much yet. So if you could tell us more about the cruise activities that would be great.
Hope you stick around with us and post here again.
Also, Enjoy your trip!!!

Thanks!

I will definitely stick around, and hope the show doesn't suck I will also definitely post what, if anything, I find out from the crew, although the Captain will be a different one.

If you want to see more about what is usual on a Windjammer cruise (and no, they don't do nude cruises unless a charter group takes over the entire ship), you can check out the Windjammer web ring -- they do a great deal of repeat business (I think about 40%) and a lot of people are fanatics!

Hey Jammer Girl...it was good to hear from a fellow "Jammer", ...what ship did you sail on?...the other four times?...OMG thats great...I was on for two weeks and that was awesome enough...don't know if I could stand to go for more hahhaha...I never met or saw Capt. Matt...my Capts. were Capt. Stewart and Capt. Guy. I thought they both were great...as for the best eye candy...have to go with Capt. Guy...certainly a cutie from the land down under!!!!!

As for the Capt. on this cruise...I have heard that it was Capt. Stewart, which seemed a bit strange at first because he doesn't do that anymore (got a desk job at the main office), but it makes sense they would want him for that show. I also heard about a hot tub they put in for the show...I think it was on the fore deck (quite close to the Capt. quarters!)...let me know what signs you see of reconstruction, it should be interesting.

I hope you have a great time on the Mandy, I'm sure you will...don't get too much sun!!! Oh yeah, did you ever compete in their "boat races" onboard?...how about the crab races?...BLT nite?...(black tie, lingerie or toga party) how about P.P.P. nite?...(pirate, pimp or prostitute nite)...just some fun stuff we did on the Fantome. What islands are you going to? You'll be sailing when I go back to work...had neck surgery in May...I'll be thinking of you!! HAVE FUN

Hey there!

I've been on Fantome, Polynesia, Yankee Clipper and Mandalay previously.

Yes, I've experienced all the activities. LOL. They still do all that stuff to some degree, depending on the "mood" of the passengers on board each week.

Capt. Stewart is the "safety officer" of the fleet, last I saw him/heard. So, it would make sense that he was there for the filming, etc., and at the helm.

Hot tub?! LMAO!!! It's been over a year, so I doubt there will be anything still there. I think she's been in dry dock since the filming . . . but the crew should be the same for the most part. Of course, it's completely possible that they brought in their own stewards and bartenders, etc. for the show. Who knows? I just thought it was incredibly weird that now that the show is finally airing, so long after being filmed, that it's the week I'll be there. Hee hee.

Right back at you fellow Jammer...wow, now I'm really jealous, you've been on all the "good" ships. My Mom and Aunt and Uncle tried the Legacy but...it wasn't up to the Fantome, not in their eyes anyway...we were all so spoiled by that ship!!!!
I'm glad to hear that they still have all those fun activities onboard...those and the rum swizzles certainly make the sail an adventure.
Cool, Capt. Stewart is the safety officer, yes, that would make sense for him to be aboard. Glad to hear he hasn't lost his "sea legs" hahaha.
Hey...if you see Sam (he was the Chef, I believe on both of my trips)would you tell em that Alice says Hey...I sailed in '93 and '96. I'm sure he sees so many of us, but tell him I said Hi anyway. Please? That would be cool.
I thought it strange that it took so long to air too...maybe they had alot of editing to do since they said they had cameras in the cabins!!!!Better watch out...hehehehe...wish the hot tub would still be there though...that must have cost a pretty penny!! Let me know what other renovations you hear about on your cruise...I'm so curious.
BTW, I'm from Pa., where are you from?
