Please keep all sig-pic free discussion of tonight's one hour and 7 minute episode (take that DWTS) on this thread until the West Coast has a chance to finish dancing, crying, cleaning up the blood at the end of the show.

Here are the song spoilers for this week: http://community.realitytvworld.com/boards/DCForumID44/2232.shtml

And a note from your host. Once again I have class. I will probably not be home until just after the show starts. So if someone will kindly make a post with the Singer's name in the subject line to help organize the first couple of singers that would be ever so loverly.

Ryan announces Gwen Stefani night, introduces judges...YAY! No insipid banter! I like this abbreviated format.

Is Gavin there? *drool*

Took time out of her tour to coach the idols. She said that she's not as much into big voices as she is style. Gina is crying.

LaKisha and her dead eyes are up first.

Gwennie says LaKliche should be coaching her. Um, no Gwennie. YOU have presence and a personality.

Technically she's good, but ho-hum stage presence. Judges pimping her, as usual.

WTF IS SHE WEARING?!!

Randy says he likes dawg going up-tempo

Paulor says you look great yadda yadda, Donna Summer hard to do.

Slimon likes her boots.

ditto.

Yes, she's an amazing singer, but she's practically a zombie up there.

The judges comments were kinda non-comments too.

She was kinda zombie like. Maybe she was afraid of loosing those tig 'ole bitties. Quite a dress.

*YAWN* I'm over LaKIKIsha. She sings great, but so what? You are right about the dead eyes & I think she oozes affected, but maybe that's just me.

Batter up! Here's the pitch - a hanging curveball on the right side of the plate. Here's the swing, and she connects! Knocks. It. Out. Of. The. Park. For a solo homer.

Methinks we are all setting our expectations waaaaaaayyyyy tooooo highhhhh.

I disagree. She fazed on the big high Donna Summer note of that song. She played way.too.safe.

I missed this one (out to dinner). Sounds like Lakisha lost her rhythm so to speak - no surprise as I think she has been playing it safe rather than doing something risky.

Lakisha is fading from where she began.. too bad..

"RE: LaKliche - Last Dance"

From what little I saw on the recap (I missed the first two songs), 'fading' is the right word for it. Somewhat disappointing, actually. In retrospect, I think Jordin did better, so Lakisha is on the way to disappearing into obscurity with some of the other contestants if she doesn't return back to her booming voice form next week.

Fan question - how much down time and how do you spend it? Chris says knitting and crocheting and playing the bongos in his underwear. Seriously, he sleeps.

"Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic."

Gwen says his tempo is off.

Hahaha this is craptacular! The "dancing", the off-keyness of it...I fully support VFTW going with Chris after Sanjaya is gone.

Randy - good song for you. Gwen was right. The band and Chris off tempo with each other. Randy called it a trainwreck! LOL

Paulor - Vocally it was nice, but you gotta hear the beat.

Slimon - it was a mess. If this was the first time I'd seen and heard you...it was a mess. The music cuts him off, he says it's not the Oscars.

I love this rushed format! They're all so used to stretching it out.

"RE: Chrish Sligh - The Police."

I liked it. I didn't notice the beat thang as much as Randy & Paula harped on it. I also didn't think it was a mess as Simon said. I thought it fit his voice fine. That is a tough melody, and he hit it.

Like last week, though, he looked like he was really concentrating hard & the performance aspect suffered a little from it.

Felt that Chris wasn't there. Maybe he's giving up, dunno.

"RE: Chrish Sligh - The Police."
Posted by CattyChat on 03-27-07 at 07:11 PM
He may have been a bit off tempo, but it wasn't THAT bad and didn't keep Paula from dancing. Vocally, he has the chops. I've always had a problem listening to singers with lisps (ugh that Chicken Little grated on my nerves). He's better than the judges give him credit for and this season I am getting aggravated by the obvious manipulating. The clips shown are positive for the judge's faves, yet negative for the others. Songs being pulled at the last minute . . . I'm not liking all this.

In short, Chris was good, not great and definitely not a train wreck.

Another peeve -- why does Paula even bother saying anything if she is just going to regurgitate what Randy says. All she adds is "you looked good."

Why am I so annoyed this evening???

Curious - has she ever disagreed with Randy or added anything truly original?

"RE: Chrish Sligh - The Police."
Posted by priestdi on 03-27-07 at 11:36 PM

it was interesting last year, she got pissed at Simon once and switched chairs with Randy.

and she did quite well talking first.

I don't think she gets nearly enough credit for actually having her own opinions.

So she agrees with Randy. So what? If she went first, he'd agree with her. But it's not fun making fun of Randy, so that does nowhere.

You can see it on her face, how she feels about them. She doesn't need Randy to tell her.

So the song spoilers were dead on this week, huh?

I liked that!

But then I like Gina

Randy: This is boot night. This was one of your best performances ever. You got that big old voice just believe and choose wise song.

Paula: You are coming into your own, song was great let you soar with the vocals. You showed your vulnerablity.

Simon: Wasn't one of your best, it WAS your best performance. THIS IS about knowing who you are and choosing the right songs. This was perfect and best performance so far this night.

VERY nice - she sold the hell out of that. Sounded good too. I'm glad the judges saw that too - I was afraid they were going to pound her for very very minor pitch issues....which when you're PERFORMING like that, doesn't matter.

thanks for saying that. I'm just now watching my tape and reading this, and I'm offended on several different levels.

First, if I was into VFTW, then I'd be on that site. But i'm not, so I'm here.

So thanks, but please keep your cute but crass nicknames in the proper place, OK? as in, not the moderator's headline for Sanjaya's performance.

and as a woman, I think a vagina is a very fine thing, thanks. And I'd appreciate it if you didn't pervert it into an insult.

and one more. I happen to think that the feline quality that Sanjaya brings to his manhood is hot. Jagger and Prince have it too.

I think I'm done, for now anyway. time to watch Phil. a very unappealing and anti-feline man.

you're kidding, right?

it's OK to be totally disrespectful to women by heading this performance as "Sangina" but it's not OK to protest it?

I really, really do not understand the rules here.

And I mean no disrepect to you. I really do not get it.

Wild guess -- you're a man?

This thread is for discussing American Idol and its participants, not the moderation of these forums. If you have a question for a moderator, please take it private.

And to avoid letting this thread go even more off-topic with comments about my gender, let's just end the speculation (or proof positive from posters who've been around) by pointing out that your wild guess was incorrect.

I couldn't see how before. I did it with the alert button, which I assume will get to you.

I mean this with respect. But I do not consider my original post to be off-topic. And I remain amazed that it merited a warning.

And I'm done with this topic now.

*snort*
LMAO

Dean Banowetz, the head hair stylist for American Idol, does a telephone interview every Wednesday with one of the local radio stations here. This past week, they had a guest DJ, who wanted to ask Dean about the fauxhawk that was sported by a contestant 2 seasons ago, if he had anything to do with it. The comment was made that that was the week the contestant got voted off. So Dean says that if Sanjaya made it past the elimanations that night, Sanjaya might have the fauxhawk this week.

So, when I tuned in briefly tonight, just in time to see Sanjaya and his hair, I was ROFLMAO.

Oh.My.HECKNESS!!!

WTF did they do to the hair?!?!?

Guess this was the fauxhawk we were promised.

Randy: I'm speechless. The Hairdo is interesting. At the end of the song you sang that one note at the end, if you would just put it out there.

Paula: IF you had the gumption to just go for it. It's kinda like oh come on.

Simon: I presume there was no mirror in your dressing room. I don't think it matters what we say anymore. You are in your own universe and if people like you, good luck.

Cyndi Lauper if she was Birthed by Walt Disney.

Randy: It started a little rough got better toward the end. It was just aight, didn't grab me had some pitchy moments

Paula: It requires nothing other than singing the melody. You did more of an adult contemporary rather than youthful.

Simon: I think it was sweet but forgettable. You will hear thousands of girls that could sing like that.

All this time it's been BUGGING me -- who does Haley look like? It just hit me. Dana Reeve, the late.

Which makes it hard for me to snarque on her, but whatever.

She sucked. She thought she was better than she was, you could tell by the way her face fell when she heard the judges. She thought she was going to get the crown this week. Well, nyah nyah, KatPee v2.0! Further, the cheesy, obvious attempt at grabbing a glory note was DAW-inspiring.

Range-wise this is a good song choice for him - the low stuff is all soft & creepy, then he can wail on the high notes. He hit more notes than usual tonight.

Still don't like him much - doesn't feel real, and too inconsistent.

Way to dress like homeless stalker guy. Makes me fell so much more creeped out.

Oh, and step away from the Bedazzler and no one gets hurt.

Randy: I kinda liked that solid performance. You sang a couple of runs at the end that was kinda nice.

Paula: There is so much personality and color in the chorus, but in the verses you need to build more character.

Simon: I actually thought that was very good. Great choice of song. This is the only time I thought you were taking this seriously and trying to do well.

Ugh, I guess I have to admit that was pretty good, EXCEPT for the weak attempt at a falsetto.

Doesn't matter how good he sings, I just don't like him. Also, I can totally see him as stalking ex-girlfriends. He's just freaky looking that way.

"RE: Phil Stacey "
Posted by cahaya on 03-27-07 at 07:33 PM
Hmmmm, pretty good, and it's the first song by him that I actually liked (but not quite a lot). Vast improvement over past weeks, so he's likely safe for the week.

Phil's pulling out all the tricks tonight. Microphone-stand-grabbing, eye-f*cking, dripping-with-melisma, and apparently, according to Randy, he has the runs.

I hate Phil. Can you tell?

Sweetness, you gots no neck so avoid the crew neck.

Randy: What is so dope the reason I called you the pro you sing with feeling, living the words. That was Da Bomb Again.

Paula: You have charisma from the word go. You sing you tell a story with your songs in spades.

Simon: Vocally outstanding, hate the outfit, not the performance we will remember when we look back.

"RE: Melinda Doolittle"

Still love Mindy. She's still the best singer & performer here. Will still buy her album of jazz standards.

She is not a pop singer, and probably won't win. She & Lakisha really need to do some contemporary material.

And pookie - you already have almost no neck. Jewel-neck tops are NOT for you. It makes you look like you have a squash sitting on your shoulders.

The girl is dang-near perfect EVERY.SINGLE.WEEK. Amazing.

I love her voice. I'm with Paula in that this girl interprets and puts her heart and soul into every performance. In that respect, she is so like Taylor last season.

I still think she is the winner. *crosses fingers*

Randy: Not sure if perfect song choice, you made the most of it. I liked it.

Paula: I love what you did with the song. It was so cool. You were taking risks and being original. I think you are the dark horse.

Simon: Definitely the strongest guy in the competition. In this Chris Daughtry zone, don't become too indulgent and boring. You are the front running guy.

"RE: Blake Lewis "

I thought this was great -- good choice to lay off the quirky stuff - and yet, it's The Cure (quirk). He's got a nice sound, and he looked really good tonight too - more grown up for a more grown up song.

I didn't find it boring - the contestants need to do a ballad once in a while or they'll get criticized for not changing it up.

"RE: Blake Lewis "
Posted by cahaya on 03-27-07 at 07:43 PM
Ok, maybe the song was Ok, but I still don't like his voice, which hasn't changed at all from one week to the next. I could get a headache listening to more than two or three songs with his voice - too much the same in a ever-nasal tone.

"RE: Jordin Sparks"

Like her, but this sucked. Lacked energy. Used to seeing Gwen's sexy performances, this was very subdued.

But her voice is so good.

The outfit looks like friggin Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz. Horrific.

"RE: Jordin Sparks"
Posted by Snidget on 03-27-07 at 07:45 PM
Who are you and what did you do with Jordin.

Worked it out on the chorus, but *gack*

Randy: That was a very risky thing to do. You could sing anything and that was brilliant.

Paula: You're adorable and hip.

Simon: You are the most improved for the last few weeks. It's a bit copy cattish.

"RE: Jordin Sparks"
Posted by cahaya on 03-27-07 at 07:49 PM
Not a good song choice for her (better Lakisha or Melinda sing it), and it didn't quite all fit together for me. With her talent and voice, she could have done better with a different song, arrangement and outfit. Still, good performance although I disagree with Simon that she is the most improved singer. If anything, I think she took a step back this week, but she's still worthy of being in the top three.

BARF.

sing the melody sing the melody sing the melody sing the melody

And as I predicted, he can't sing the long phrases and apparently doesn't understand the concept of legato.

Gwen was SO right, this song doesn't need the frou frou. It ruined the song.

I can't put into words how bad this is. I just don't think people should have tried to do Gwen. Her voice is so original. You can't help but compare.

This sounds like a bad impression of the Back Street Boys.

Damn, where is the power and emotion for that chorus. Not vocal Olympics. Sing from the diaphragm, don't make me come and punch you so you finally find out where it is.

*bleck*

Randy: That was a very interesting kinda thing with the R&B I liked your twist, but not your best.

Paula: Your good, your good.

Simon: I think your song choice got you in trouble last week. Liked the song choice but not crazy about the vocal. You struggled in the middle and you have to pay more attention to your vocals.

"Post-show rankings"
Posted by geekboy on 03-27-07 at 09:11 PM
Just watched 'House'. Damn good show.

Here is my 'groupings' for the Top-10 show

Top Of The Heap
================
Melinda - just brilliant with her vocals, her interpretations, and her delivery. In an odd way, she reminds me of Taylor in how she lives and breathes the songs she chooses.
Gina - Best for her so far. Chills-inducing.
Lakisha - I love her. I'm pleased that both her and Melinda did up-tempo songs FINALLY.
Phil - Like Gina, his best. He finally found a song that showcased his vocal sweetspot.

Middle of the road - not bad, not great
========================================
Blake - I'm growing to really like him, but not his best tonight. I found it boring.
Chris R. - Dittos to Blake
Jordin - I did not like that at all.

Bottom of the barrel
=====================
Chris S - it pains me to put you here because i love your voice. But you've been going downhill the past three weeks.
Haley - booooooooooooooooooooooring.
Sanjaya - Small moments of 'great', but overall, not so good. The mohawk sealed your fate on this list

Heh. I've stayed away from this so far. But here goes nothing.

1) GINA. One of the few times she's seemed to feel the song.
2) Melinda. I always, always liked this song, so that may be a factor,
3) Phil. Phil? I guess the creepy stalker persona works for him.
4) Blake. Still the best male, but not the best song tonight.
5) Jordin. Eh.
6) Lakisha. Starting to slip away.
7) Haley. Competent, but that's all.
8) Chris R. A dud after last week's home run.
9) Chris S. Bye.
10) Sanjaya. There were a few moments in the song when he seemed to have a clue. But not enough. Compared to him, Anthony Fedorov and John Stevens were superstars.

1. Nosphilatu. I can't believe he's #1. Very good job...appropriate song choice for the stalkerish looking Stacey

2. Gina. *sigh*. I'm not a huge fan...but I thought it was her best vocal

3. Melinda. As usual, very good, but didn't do anything for me

4. Sanjaya. Frohawk + Not Caring + Forgetting Words + Backtalk = VFTW Victory = FC Victory

5. Jordin. I admit, I like Jordin a lot more than I thought I would.

6. Sligh. OK, he wasn't good, but he was memorable and I like the song

7. Lakisha. *snore*

8. Blake. Did NOTHING for me. I don't even remember it

9. Haley and Chris (tie): Both were amazingly horrid tonight. Well, Haley's always below average and I hate Chris, but they both stunk it up

11. Gwen: Useless.
