"The Green Checkboard of Death"

I can't be the only one this happens to, but whenever I come to SB from my home computer the screen, after it loads, becomes one giant green checkboard - a la the page background. If I click around, I can make it disappear in chunks, but I was trying to figure out if there was anything I needed to change in my settings to make this work.

Keep in mind, this is my wife'c crappie Mac - so that could be the problem. Internet Explorer is my browser. Any suggestions? Or perhaps you could just change the entire site format for little ol me?

the background is set to be the LAST thing to load on the page (watch things load from another computer... the green checks will appear behind everything after the rest of the page has loaded).

I am aware of a bug with Explorer 3.x that *may* cause that problem... have you upgraded to a new version of Internet Explorer recently?... If upgrading doesn't help, then you'll have to wait for Webby's response

You never know what might be up my sleeeve...

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have IE 5. I'll make sure that it is the latest version though.

Don't use a Mac?

Seriously, I don't know, I have no clue, I haven't had access to a Mac in several years. Someone here used to get this problem but then it disappeared (or at least I think that was the case, am I wrong?) Does anyone else have this problem?

Anyways, I'll try and see if I can find any bugs relating to the use javascript use of showing background under IE on Macs...

Webby,

The same thing happens to me when I am accessing this sight from a Linux operating system. I just assummed that It was designed for IE on a PC using Windows, and that this is yet another example of Microsoft screwing the competition with incompatability issues.

Actually, its designed to be cross-browser compatible under Netscape 4.6x, 6.x, and IE 4.0-6.0. But the only platform I have to test on is the various Windows versions...

I'll see if I can find anything, but it's fine under Netscape on my system's as well. What browser are you using on Linux?

Still hoping for a solution to this problem, so I wanted to give it a hopeful little bump.

I have also had this problem every time I use a Mac at school.
It is ALWAYS a mac and it is always the ones on the second floor of the Odegaard library at the UW.

My solution is to click on the scroll bar, hold it down and move it down and then up so you "wipe" away the green checkerboard. It is a pain in the rear to do everytime you come here but it is the quickest way.

I totally agree with Ivory. The only time I've had any problems is when I've used my step-dad's Mac or my friend's Mac. Other than that, I've never had any problems with anything here at SB.

*except for the occasional way off topic remarks by some peeps who obviously need more sleep or another cup of joe!!!*

Webby,

Sorry it took me so long to respond to this. I haven't been back in this forum for months.
The browser is a propriatary browser. It is designed to be used by dummie terminals, so all of the real proccessing is done by the Server. It Sucks. I have a T1 connection, and my connection time is no faster than my 56k modem at home.
