"Videos of Contestants"

I obviously don't understand something ...I thought the contestants waited in line and just came in off the street. If that's the case, how do they get those videos showing them at their jobs & etc? Do they hand in a video with their application or is there some kind of pre-screening process days before their actual audition? Someone must know. Please enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

LAST EDITED ON 01-17-07 AT 07:27 PM (EST)

I always assumed that in the time between when the audition were filmed and Hollywood they went out to film stuff about people with interesting stories.

Remember the auditions happened last fall sometime. I think even the Hollywood stuff is done pre-season. Once they get to the finalists, then it is live.

ETA: Here is the audition schedule for the season that just started.

Los Angeles, TBA Tuesday, August 8
San Antonio, Alamodome Friday, August 11
New York, Continental Air Arena Friday, August 14
Birmingham, BJCC Monday, August 21
Memphis, FedEx Forum Sunday, Sept. 3
Minneapolis, Target Center Friday, Sept. 8
Seattle, KeyArena Tuesday, Sept. 19

That is a possibility. They certainly have enough time in between the auditions and the airing of the show. I did ask this same question on another message board site as well & here is what they told me:

"Basically there are auditions before you even get to see Randy , Paula and Simon. In the first round almost everyone auditions for a group of producers , then if you get a ticket you go to the second round with the main producers. Then I think a week later you get to see Randy, Paula and Simon. So they probably do the videos in that week."

Both ideas are interesting. Thanks for the input!

Obviously Simon, Randy and Paula don't watch 100,000 people trying out. At 1 minute each, that would take 24 hours a day for over 69 days.
