"The Benefactor"

I've seen a few ads for this show and it looks intriguing. It will debut Sept 13, on ABC preceding Monday Night Football (after, for us Left Coasters). I couldn't find a forum or a thread for it already on here so I thought I'd start one.

A link to the show - albeit with scant info - is here:

http://abc.go.com/primetime/schedule/2004-05/thebenefactor.html

As it stands now, I should have time to watch. I'm not sure what processes are involved here to start a summary-writing sign-up, or if one has already been started, but I wouldn't mind doing one or more summaries for the show.

So what does everyone think? Is Mark Cuban just a Trump wannabe or is this idea unique enough to be successful in its own right?

-Jack Bauer

P.S. If there is already a forum, could someone provide a link to it? Thanks.

Cuban has always seemed to me part Trump, part Tim and Tom. Hopefully with plenty of shots of the former and not so many shots of the latter. Winning seems to be based pretty much on Cuban's whims, so a lot depends on just how capricious he turns out to be. Given ABC's reality programming track record, there's room for worry.

If no one else wants in, I'll share the recapping with you, Jack.

The Summary sign-up thread is here if you're interested.

I've been fortunate enough to see both sides of Cuban, working in Dallas sports media. I've seen the happy-go-lucky, goofy-##### side of Cuban, just wanting to have fun. He's a funny guy who enjoys life. I've also seen the vindictive, pissed off side of Cuban, who will stop at nothing to get his way or to try to "get back" at those who have wronged him. Once, when our station reported on what some of his players had said about the war, he came on and blasted us for reporting it and making his team look bad. He then refused to come back on for several months, until he had something else to promote.

My final opinion of Cuban? He's a genius, and a master manipulator. He's learned that money can buy you anything you want. He's also a big baby. If he doesn't get his way, he'll just take his ball and go home.

WTF? I have just spent 45 minutes watching and we have no idea what the game is going to be like...

Who can kiss Mark Cuban's arse the best?

I mean...come on...give us a clue as to what is going to happen. Don't pull a FOX and give us plot twist every 12 seconds!

ETA: Cuban just said that they will have to play the game 24/7...how can they play when the game isn't defined?

Actually thats the idea. The show is designed to reflect what I think it takes to be successful. In the real world, there arent any rules. Things arent packaged nicely so that we all know what we are supposed to do.

When we go out to reach our goals, there isnt a host saying... everyone do this and we will pick the winner.

I wanted 16 normal people , because i think success can come from anyone, anywhere.

In future eps, there are specific tasks, but they are all open ended. The contestant have to figure it out on their own just how to respond.

The tests are pretty simple in concept, but really, really hard to respond to when

THe simplest questions are often the toughest to answer.

Thanks for watching, and my email is mark@hd.net

Im loving hearing and reading what everyone has to say about the show !

thanks again

Hi Mark!
Thanks for responding here.

I thought the show was good, I liked that the players were kept off their feet and had to put their best self forward right away.

You looked like you were really enjoying yourself, and that made the show fun for me.
I will definately watch again, I'm looking foward to getting to know the players better.

buggy, come on - he clearly said on the show that kissing ass was not acceptable.

frankly, I'm still mad that I bought my kid a now worthless Nash Mavericks jersey. If Steve had his own reality show, I'd blame him. But until that time, I'm blaming Cuban.

I have to hand it to him though - a jenga deathmatch is an innovative concept.

Oh Pooh, Buggy is QUEEN of the suck-ups.

I have to hand it to him though - a jenga deathmatch is an innovative concept.

Well, it's one step above the famous Love Cruise fruit squeeze, but, JENGA? Oh yeah, I was on the edge of my seat for that. What's next, a rousing round of Old Maid? Checkers? Oh wait, I've got it....rock, paper, scissors! My 7 year old is gonna love this show.

"RE: I liked it!"
Posted by Loree on 09-16-04 at 03:10 PM
Well I enjoyed it. And it was the fact that it was unpredictable that made me enjoy it. We have all had those job interviews where we have no idea what the proper answer is. And that is what the interviews seemed like to me. Everyone wanted to answer correctly. But didn't know how to answer when asked about the other players. It put everyone off balance and made it more fun to watch.

I like not knowing when the show is going to have the next scheduled challenge.

When you are playing with your own money you can make the rules. I love the concept.

Yes! What Loree said, way better than I did.

I like not knowing when the show is going to have the next scheduled challenge.

When you are playing with your own money you can make the rules. I love the concept.

This is why I'll give it another watch. It's different, it's unpredictible.

.....I don't really care about the lack of rules. I've never been a stickler for rules on a stupid (yes, I did call your show stupid) reality game show.

However, what I was disappointed in was the total lack of charisma and personality that you showed on camera. Being an NBA fan I've become a fan of yours over the year...you seem like an interesting person. But, watching the show you came off as a dull, personality lacking former nerd who has too much money and not enough ideas on what to do with it.

This wasn't a TV show, it was some rich moron's home video project..and that is exactly where it should've stayed.

BTW, have you figured out yet that defense wins championships? Or are you stil of the belief that the team with the most wing players who can score is the team that wins in the end?

WORST. SHOW. EVER.

The only difference is that I've never really liked Cuban. He's way too much like that Richard Pryor character in "Brewster's Millions".

I can't believe I wasted an hour of TiVO space on this complete waste of time.

"This wasn't a TV show, it was some rich moron's home video project..and that is exactly where it should've stayed."

Exactly. This looked like a house party gone horribly wrong. What's next? Jayson Williams' "The Rifleman" series?

The answer to the question "What's worse than an elimination competition based on lemonade sales?" is clearly "one involving Jenga".

I finally got the opportunity to watch the show today and I was so hoping to walk away with your pure hatred and disgust for the thing but I didn't!

Clearly, the lack of rules or game plan in general is the entire premise of the show. I'll watch again (IF someone reminds me when it comes on!).

Okay, I have to butt in and say, I did like the show. I thought the players were interesting, and the lack of the kind of structure we've come to expect from RTV to be very captivating. So, says I, bring on the caos.

Keeping the contestants in the dark on what is going on is one thing and not telling the viewer is another. The way it was presented last night...there are no rules! This also leads me to believe that the person who wins will be the person Cuban likes the best. If that is the case...come out and say so! Don't tell them they are playing a game when they aren't.

Also, I agree with you on Shawn! Who the heck told her she was cute AND why does she think just because she is educated she can be a b!tch! She said she was a b!tch and she could be one because she was well educated! WTF? Education has nothing to do with being a b!tch. IDIOT AT BEST! I don't think we need someone like her teaching our children! She didn't like the hair guy because he was popular and was taking the attention from her!

Shawn is an arrogant little witch! In this article she says, "I don't want to just be the pretty beauty pageant girl that nobody takes seriously,"

Then:
"I'm the cute, sweet one everyone looks at and says, 'She's so adorable,' "

ALSO: Interesting that the article says ABC sent out a tape revealing the final four! Do you think that is true?

I think they did send out the tape. I checked at Reality World articles and I couldn't find that Webby found out the scoop. So who knows??? Although it's only 8-9 episodes, so it could be down to the final four in a month...esp. if Cuban continues to dismiss multiple contestants on one episode.

My first thought when they showed her was, she looks like a dog. I mean an actual dog.
My 11 year old daughter then said it out loud, she looks like my friends dog.
Shes a B!tch and officially my least favorite.
She's well educated and she can be a #####? She's a second grade teacher for crying out loud. It doesnt take that much education to get a teaching certificate. And why is she knocking the guy for being a model. If someone would pay me to be a model I'd do it too.

I thought that too at the beginning that it was all on Mark Cuban's whim, but I think I'm going to like the show as it continues. I thought the first boot was a bit harsh, because Richard's "stupid" comment was clearly not mean spirited nor derogatory, but Cuban did warn them-it starts from the moment you walk into the house....As soon as I opened my mouth, I probably would have put my foot in it and Mark would have come out of his booth right away and thrown my a$$ out right then and there!!

I kept thinking to myself "You know who would have been perfect contestant for this show--Shakes!!" I think he and Cuban would click...and then after he won the million, I could show up at my good friend's doorstep!!!!

I really liked the show. And I thought his first elimination mirrored his own experience nicely. He made a stupid comment and lost his chance. So did Rich.
IMHO, this show is more reality than any reality out there. You make it in this world by thinking fast on your feet, handling pressure, and making the right impression. Sorry, but that is reality.

You don't hate it too much? That's a ringing endorsement.

Back when I worked for DSC Communications (now Alcatel), they had an advertising slogan "Do what you want" (with a picture of the Statue of Liberty on the poster) and we all (mostly software developers in my group) hated it. (I mean come on, how many tired poor immigrants could afford to buy a telecom switch?)

I suggested "Our products don't suck that much" and "Would you like fries with that". Of course, I suggested these to my fellow developers, not management.

"Lack of Rules"
Posted by Reeflex7 on 09-14-04 at 12:20 PM
I don't know how I feel yet about the lack of clearly defined rules. On one hand I liked Mr. Cuban's post above and I think he defended the format well; I understand the reasoning. And comparing this show to a Fox show (Paradise Hotel leaps immediately to mind) isn't quite fair IMO...P-Ho set ground rules at the start and then changed them arbitrarily once the originals started to get too dominant (for a while all the new peeps were getting sent home almost immediately after they got there). With this show, there's no pretense of that...the only rule seems to be that there are no rules.

I had a real problem with Richard being sent home. It seemed like the only reason Cuban did it was to make a point. I felt like he had already made up his mind that he was going to bounce somebody within the first few minutes just to shock everyone else and set the tone for the game. Unfortunately the reason he sent Richard home was not a good one and the wrong tone was set - now it seems like the eliminations could be arbitrary and petty, and where's the fun in that?

I'll wait and see how the other episodes shake out. Cuban's pretty brutally honest and seems to be having a ball, so it could be fun. On the other hand, if every elimination comes down to who's the better Jenga player I might just switch to ESPN.

"RE: Lack of Rules"
Posted by AirDragon on 09-14-04 at 02:59 PM
Well what you have to realize is that the "format" of the game is pre-set. ABC and Mark knew in advance that one person was being sent packing on first impression alone. Mark even said that when he started watching them come in.

Remember this is based Mark's rules of success and the first rule is you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. Someone had to go and it might as well be the guy who made the mistake of saying the game would be stupid, no matter what the context was.

While we didn't see interviews of all 15 remaining contestants did anyone else note a comraderie, buddy-type atmosphere for the men, and a more conservative and formal interview for the women?

I would have LOVED it if at the end of the Jenga game William was sent off for being highly annoying. =)

"liking it so far"
Posted by I_AM_HE on 09-14-04 at 08:35 PM
the show definietly kept my interest, and like others, i loved the Jenga game (shades of MMH, eh Draco? don't know that anyone else here watched that, but oh well)

the cast intrigues me, because there seem to be a mix of truly neat/inspirational peeps (like the football woman), and then some total lamers like Dominik (dood, your hair sucks. here's some advice: shave it all off and start over. and you're just as annoying as William, who really didn't annoy me until his behavior at Jenga). I really like Mario, the Watermelon Princess, the B!tch, and the Footballerita. Dislike Dominick, Spencer, and William. But the show's still young

would have liked to see the poker girl last longer, but she was clearly the worst in her interview

I found Mark Cuban to be annoying and aggrogant--he knows what it takes to be successful in life. Perhaps he knows how to become rich but that alone doesn't make you a success in life. What about family, realtionships, morals, ethics and your contribution to to the betterment of society? What an arrogant a$$.

you dont have to like me.. Thats up to you. But the show is 100 pct about everything you just mention.

But rather than jumping to conclusions, you will just have to watch.

One of the challenges on monday is based on recognizing that time is more valuable than monday, and another is that the best judges of character are kids. can you deal with kids who dont care anything about what you have or what you can do....

and I know you didnt ask, but 100 pct of what I would get paid is going to www.fallenpatriotfund.org

You dont know me at all, but I agree 100 pct with your perspective. I said it in the show. Success isnt about making the most money, its about living your dreams and being able to wake up and go to sleep with a big smile on your face.

On another episode, the contestants are judged on their abilities to do random acts of kindness and make people smile...

www.blogmaverick.com is where I talk about more of these

One last thing.. None of the cuts are on the whim, or just because I like or dont like someone. In each test, I know EXACTLY what I am looking for. In the first eps, it was always one specific thing per test.

Thanks for the specifics, Mark. I think I'm gonna like it, in spite of what the skeptics and my dog say...forgive her, she thinks she's real. (Hey!) Anyway, you sound like an interesting guy to me, and that's MHO. Don't even try to please all of us who post here, because we are a diverse and multi-opinionated group, and there's one thing we always agree on. NEVER will we ALL agree on anything. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it!

which is unusual for me. Other than Survivor and some college sports, I don't watch TV. I just don't have enough time or interest.

But I have always been intrigued by Cuban, a guy who will say what he feels at any time any place. I can respect that, even it it has me cringing on occasion.

As I watched, I went from being mildly interested during the introductions to being a little annoyed during the 1st cut segment. I get that they knew they were supposed to be playing. But the Cuban reaction scenes seemed very amateurish.

Granted, Cuban is no actor, and I don't need him to be a Jeff Probe-like talking head. But he seemed to bounce in and out of focus, both physically and emotionally. I stopped watching after the Ex-Marine florist was capped.

After I thought about it for a while, I decided that the show felt a lot like one of The Assistant episodes I surfed past during a football game commercial a while back.

If you haven't seen the Assistant, Andy ##### is all over the radar. One minute he's convincingly serious and the next he's comedian Andy. But I never know how to take him, and thus a good premise is wasted.

I can't say from a third of the initial episode that the same is happening on the BF. But that is my impression.

I'd like to be worng, b/c I am generally pro-Cuban. Though I'd rather watch paint dry than watch the NBA, I do pay attention to the Mavs. So I hope Cuban gets better reviews than my gut reaction.

I agree with the babelicious Sheila.

Mark Cuban reminds me of what I'd be like if I struck it insanely rich on one colossal business deal. I would enjoy the he!! out of life - buy an NBA team, watch the games from next to the bench, make a show about me giving away a million dollars, and more.

Only difference - I would buy into the Kings since I'm a huge Kings fan. I also would still post here on RTVW!

FYI people..the person posing as Mark writting here...it's not Mark. I was on a similar message board back when the casting was being done....he (even the same name) came there and messed with us too..getting our hopes up that all the cast had not been picked, telling us to stay tuned...really played with us. Was a very cruel prank. The board owner confirmed it wasn't Mark at all...just someoneone with to much time on his hands. I did get a real letter from Mark at the beginning of casting..not much..a few sentences. Since then I have watched interviews on him...and watched the show. Not impressed with either. In two shows I have seen a man who disrespects his wife (talking to the men about how hot the women are/booting the gal who got naked in her tape, but remained clothed for the first episode. And booting a guy for saying the word "stupid"? Mark seems to be all about Mark and no one else, and I'm waitng for a temper tamtrum where he falls to the floor and whines "it's just not fair" if his steak isn't cooked the way he wants it. I feel sorry for those people to have to try and kiss his butt and hope they consider the source when he demeans them. The million bucks? I think it should go to his wife (she seems so sweet in the interviews)..along with a man who will make her a priority in his life. It's not the money that made him that way, it's his own self that made him that way. The show...I'll bet it gets the axe.

Cuz he will have a million by this time next year! WTF ever dood!

William good to see you go.

Not only that, he's going to be on that list of 400, in front of 400, a few spaces above Cuban. *rolls eyes*

I think the only way William will become a billionaire is if he gets $20 million from 50 different Nigerians who all have bank accounts that they need transferred.

Now, if only we can get rid of the misogynic #####.

Well I think Donald Trump would have fired Shawn for being stupid. Telling Mark she didn't want the money if she didn't earn it was STUPID.

I wanted the kids to boot William and Shawn. Oh well, at least we got rid of one of them.

Mark gets rid of the contestants very quickly. 3 this week, 4 next week.

I wonder what she thinks now that she has seen the episode and realized that the kids really didnt like her that much - they just liked her a little more than the other 2 because she pretended to like basketball. For a 2nd grade teacher she does not seem to be tooned into the kids at all. I was really impressed with the "cutey patootey" guy and the fun they had. That was the last team I thought would do well. I'm still rooting for Linda.

Mario was stiff with the kids. Almost looked like he was very nervous or scared. He just looked like he wasn't having fun. Cuban was right...kids pick up on things like that very quickly!

Shawn sucks. She claims women are catty, but she is catty herself. At one time, I wanted William to go (and I'm still glad he went), but I think I would have been even happier if Shawn had gone.

how many episodes total there are going to be for this?

I liked this second episode better but Mark is getting rid of people awfully fast. If he eliminates 6 people next episode then we will be down to the final four in 3 episodes. We don't have a lot of time to get attached to the contestants.

I thought he was going down to 6, not eliminating 6. Right now there are 10, so he will have to eliminate 4.

Mark said lastnight on the previews that he would eliminate 4 bringing us to 6 left in the game. A lot of these shows have a 6 show run and I wouldn't be surprised if that is the run time for this one!

ETA: In the summary sign-up thresd, Webby states that it is set to run for 7 weeks. So, 7 episodes!

After last night's show, I just had the feeling of absolute HATE for Shawn. I really didn't like her before but after she cut Kathy in the beginning and then hearing what she had to say about it in the confessional just made me want to hurl a chair at the TV. I do hope that she realizes she lucked out with those kids!

The ousting of William and Mario was expected. Neither of them stepped up to the plate on anything. William talks a big talk but has no game.

I still do not know several of the players (i.e. Christine) very well so I assume they will make it past the next cut so that we will actually get to know them before the end of the 7 week series.

Is it just me or is the editing of the show geared towards Shawn. I hope she does not win. I also hope that someone steps up and does something or at least is shown doing something to become "the benefactor".

I do not know how many shows are left, but we still need to see the hockey and basketball "challenges". This might be Shawn's downfall.

O.M.GAW.

This was PAINFUL for me to watch!! But a good pain. Hurt so good, Mr.Cuban. Lots of material for me to make fun of.

He is such a goofus! I can't stand listening to him go on and on about how he is the best thing since peanut butter. ARGGGG!!! The thought of going to an arcade with all of those dimwits sends me running to hide. It was just too 'whimsical' for me. MC has a huge ego. He reminds me of Cowboy from BB without the money and with brains. But that same "Look at me!" attitude.

I was so happy that Shawn got dissed by the kids. I would ahve loved to see her go- what a kick in the arse that would have been! And William- what a doofus! Shut the $%#% up already, dude!

I thought Mario (is that his name?) was going to lose his cool with him in the van. Or did he have any cool to lose?

The cute guy was great with the kids. Very natural. He is my favorite now. Although he does have an immature Donald Trump thing going on with his hair.

I thought going to the Children's hospital was a great idea. It was selfless and the benefit was great. I mean, can you ever go to the Children's hospital too many times? That kind of irked me about MC also. Just because you do a lot for them on a regular basis doesn't mean it is a bad thing to go again! But oh no! The arcade and driving course are much more beneficial for everyone involved. Well, for MC anyhow and thats really all that matters.

OK- Still having my morning coffee and maybe needing to switch to decaf- more slamming later

"Did he have any cool to lose?" - too funny....

I thought he was cool AND good looking by association, well, according to him anyway.

I agree that the Children's Hospital was a good idea. Cuban should have recognized that great minds think alike, instead, he got upset because he didn't get another trip to a theme park.

I loved that they involved children, and t-a-s-t-e-f-u-l-l-y. They say if you can manage children you can manage anybody, even grown ups. Children can often see through a facade, but at the same time, their decisions will always be immature. Not a slam, just acknowledging their true nature - they're kids.

I was extremely happy to see those two go, now, the teacher must go and bring the red head back.

Why do I watch this show, it's like peeling an itchy scab! It hurts but there's some weird satisfaction! Mark is such a whiney little child who looks like he should have a big big and pacifier at all times. But the reality tv nut in me just wants to see who wins the insane "game" (if you can call it that).

"RE: AHHHHHhhhhhhh"
Posted by sisterwoman on 09-23-04 at 06:55 AM
I thought they did a great job with the kids also. They were really cute and smart and asked the questions like junior reporters. The girl on the right side of the screen was cracking me up. I think she had a little crush on the cute guy. SHe was all lit up while talking to him. So cute.I loved the way they described William and his bouncy bouncy while he was being interviewed.

I could just imagine MC's mind conversation saying "UHH, I wanted to go to the waaaaaaaaaater paaaaaaaaaaark". Waawaa cry me a flippin river mr rich pants. Oh, great. Now I'm all revved up again and I have only had two sips of coffee! Damn you Mark Cuban!

That she is riding around town in a new Beemer, apparently isn't just a rumor. That that means she won is however a rumor (or speculation).

Apparently, Mark visited several contestants homes as part of the series, so it would maybe just indicate she made it long enough for her family to get a visit from him. Or it might mean she won.

How does Linda paying someone to design her website translate into her getting over her so-called "computer phobia"? She paid someone else to do all the work. The only thing she had to do was locate the website on her computer and she couldn't even do that! I think Mark was dead on for thinking her reactions were overexaggerated. As far as, Linda wanting to win the money to make her mom's life easier, I think Linda wants to win the money to make Linda's life easier.

Now how can you not like a guy who gathers up a rock band and smashes a $1000 guitar and jumps into a pool afterward?

It was an easy choice for me too that he would be one of the ones Mark kept. I wasn't as sure on some of the others, but it looks like Dominic has the inside track at winning.
