This show premiers on the 4th of March and its basically a reality show that pits some "alternative lifestyle" judges against a bunch of normal people. The alts vote the normal people off until one remains. You get the drill. What is the consensus?

Well, I for one can't wait! I'm watching it. I'm summarizing it for this site. And I sure hope it's good! Did you read Webby's article on the "alts"? It is here:

http://www.realitytvworld.com/index/articles/story.php?s=2274

I hope SciFi also reruns it later that same night as they often do with their shows, because I love CSI too.

Long live King Richard!

Well, I am going to have to really find a way to get some serious TV time since I currently don't have a TV myself -- it broke and I am broke -- so I am busy kissing up to a buddy who has DirecTV because I want to see this show and Tripping the Rift. I think maybe a 12-pack of beer might get me entrance. Man, I need to get myself a new TV. What time are these buggers on?

No doubt. As of this Thursday, I am pretty much going to be sitting in front of the Sci-Fi Channel from 9 until I go to bed with Mad Mad House and then with Tripping the Rift. You know what I highly recommend? I recommend going into the MMH web site and checking out http://play.rbn.com/?url=usanet/usanet/g2demand/scifi/mmh/mmh_avocado_300k.rm&proto=rtsp" target="_blank">Avocado's video interview. He is one smart cookie. This show is going to be more than just fluff.

In. I just hope the Wiccan chick doesn't make all witches look bad. :/ But the eliminations are what suckered me in. Mmmmm... hangings...

Yeah, that is pretty intense, isn't it. Verging on tasteless, but I am sure that in-context its going to make some sense. Well, the first one is tonight. I want to see how Art is able to support himself from the ceiling with meathooks. Draco, have you checked out her chat and interview? I think they would give you a pretty good hint as to whether she is a poseur or forreal.

Ok, I missed that on the site. I'm a happy little witch now.

I've seen the "hanging" thing that Art does before, and it honestly kinda creeps me out. But if it's something that brings him closer to the Divine, if it's a spiritual thing for him, more power to him. People would probably be creeped out by magick and ritual, too.

I rolled tape on this, but haven't gotten a chance to watch yet. Probably will this weekend.

I can't believe that only four people participated in the voodoo ceremony. Now I don’t know a thing about voodoo, but it was not as if she was calling up the devil. So why were people objecting based on religious reasons? I thought that she was just trying to get in touch with the dead. Did I misunderstand the ceremony?

Deonna

I would be in awe in that house. I would consider it to be a golden opportunity to learn about other people and other ways of life.

"RE: Mad Mad House"

I agree Deonna! I think what is stopping them is fear. I mean I myself have strong christan beliefs, but it would not stop me in learning about something that was outside of my "safe zone" and I think that is why many of them didn't participate.

OOooooh!!! I wish I was there! That would be cooler than cool!

Yeah, and I guess I shouldn't tell who got removed, but it wasn't who I thought it would be, the obvious choice. Yeah, love, I would love to be there. Are you going to try to win the sweepstakes for the ALTS watching the final episode.

So, the long and short of it, did you like Art, Avocado, Fiona, Don, and Ta'Shia. I was less surprised at how smart they are because I saw the interviews, but I am still impressed. It does look like some people might just open their eyes if not minds.

What I wish is for there to be more time spent in just the in-house time together, which I enjoyed watching very much. Like the whole Art on the sunbed naked scene and the scene with the Avocado shake.

Would you even get into a coffin?

"RE: Mad Mad House"
Posted by Deonna on 03-05-04 at 10:12 AM
I would like the so far Alts. I like everybody, until they do something really mean (or cruel) or betray my trust. The Alts just have a different life style than my own.

I agree, I wish they had spent alot more time just in-house. I hope that we can get more people on this board to discuss what is going on. I would like to understand more about the different life styles.

I thought the naked scenes were great. I am surprised that the guy was embarrassed/uncomfortable(?) to sit next to Art. I thought guys were used to seeing other guys naked. I know I would have sat down right next to Art. I have seen very few naked guys, so I probably would have giggled. But his nudity wouldn’t bother me.

The coffin looked like a large than normal coffin. If a person really were sleeping in it every night, I would think that it would have to be at least a little larger than normal. What do you think? You knew going in to that scene, that he was going to hold down the lid. Being adventurous, I would have gotten in, but I would have expected Don to hold down the lid. (I do think the guy expected it too). I don’t think that Don was trying to be mean, I think that he was being playful.

Do you have a connection to the Show?

Deonna

Who did you think was going to be removed?

>Do you have a connection to the Show?
No. I just have a connection with the lifestyle. I grew up in Hawaii and that world is pretty normal for me. I just saw you mention that you wished you could be hanging out with them and I saw during the show that they were sponsoring a sweepstakes. Funny thing is, I don't have any tattoos. I don't have any outward appearance that's unique or different, I am pretty normal-looking. But its funny how quickly my friends notice that I am pretty unique. I actually came to this board looking for a place to talk about MMH because I did a Google on Reality TV and here I am. I think I will find some time to expand my horizons here since I am getting to know you.

We have several Wiccans who post here regularly. I'm not so sure about the other Alt lifestyles.

I am curious. Which Alt lifestyle are you connected to, Silverado, spiritually or however? My sister lives in Hawaii and I don't think of it as a fomenting ground for Alt lifestyles, altho as a place it is very tolerant of diverse beliefs & styles. (I'm just curious--feel free to ignore my questions if you think they are too intrusive. I'm an all-encompassing agnostic myself.)

I thought the show got off to an interesting if imperfect start, but has possibilities to be both a fun show and an informative one.

I don't have time to start my summary until late tonight. Look for it later this weekend if you wish. I too was surprised at who got evicted.

Did you notice that two of the Alts live in San Diego? I don't think of San Diego as a place that is very tolerant of diverse lifestyles or believes. I was surprised. I would guess that the Bay Area would be the leader in the nation, but what do I know?

I am really hoping that we can entice some of the Board members over here that know more about Alts life style to explain stuff to us. I thought the first episode didn’t go into enough life style detail for me. For example I would like to know what the symbol meant on Ta’Shia floor. (Or did they say and I missed it?)

I am looking forward to your summary, Swami.

re: ta'shia's symbol - my guess is that it is an apotropaic device meant to ward off evil spirits or a good luck/good spirit thing, but i don't have any authority on the matter

re: everything else.

interesting show! i think Don is a weirdo, but i like the other Alts so far. they do seem pretty smart. i think the challenge priveleges are very interesting, and i wonder if the Alts forced a tie on purpose to make Brent decide (or if they will do that in the future, if not this time). Wasn't too shocked about who was evicted, I figured it was him or the rude guy (I WAS shocked he didn't get even ONE necklace). I was a bit offended on Hamin's part (and i didn't even really like the guy) for Ta'shia going off on him. BECAUSE he's black he should somehow "act" black? (and particiapating in voodoo is a requisite for "acting" black or even appreciating your heritage?) Please. This is the type of thing that I fear keeps racism alive - the you must follow the herd, all agree on one viewpoint, all vote a certain way, because you are a certain color or whatever.

I don't fault any of them for not participating in the ritual, but was a bit surprised at how many did not. It IS part of the show afterall (although apparently they had no idea what they were getting into...so I can understand some initial reluctance to participate in favor of getting your bearings and taking in the situation)

Well, I believe in Madam Pele and although I attend the Episcopal Church, I would say that my beliefs are more along the lines of Avocado. I consider the world to be illusory and manifestations of energy that can be channelled, changed, effected, and used for love or loathe. I guess some call my beliefs magical or energy-based, and there is a lot of visualization and the psi in my belief but it is personal.

The two tenets are "everything is love" and "even love can be manifested for 'good' or for 'malicious itent' -- thus our free will. Prayer is a manifestation of love, but people don't have to pray for their enemies, they can also pray against their enemies.

So, I do believe in magic, I do believe in the psychic and the paranormal. Make sense? What does it mean?

I don't normally have any interest in things like this but I, too, would be interested to meet the ALTS. A better grand prize would be at least a weekend (if not longer) with them to learn more from them about their lifestyles and beliefs (except maybe Don. I tend to prefer my vampires to be of the Angel/Spike variety, not so much for the soul as for their sex appeal).

I knew a guy in college who claimed he slept in the coffin he had in his one room apartment. He also drove an old hearse as his personal wheels. He wasn't a vampire, just non-denominationally weird.

Just watched this today. I was surprised too that only 4 were willing to try it. I wonder if any of them will be a little more willing next time. If not this could be a boring bunch. I noticed that none of the players that were willing to go along with the Voodoo lady were given necklaces.

You would think that going on to a Reality Show, contestants would have at least known in advance that that they were going to be asked to do some unusual things on the show. I figured that the person booted off would have to be one of the six that did not participate. Didn't the ALTS warn them up front that they were being judged on how well they adapted in to the house?

It seems like this bunch isn't that greedy for winning the money. If you are going to bother to go on a reality show, I would think you would try everything to win. I realize that they didn't know whose home they were going to. And it sounds like a few of them were picked because they had strong religious beliefs. But it does seem odd. Maybe as they get into the game they will be more willing to play along.

I loved this show. I too was worried about how the Wiccan was going to be shown, I have a lot of Wiccan friends and I hate the misconceptions t.v. and movies give the "general" public.

I would LOVE to be in that house, all the alts seemed really cool and I love learning about different life styles. The only problem I could forsee is the guy hanging from the celing by his back, not that it's not cool, that just kinda squicks me out (but hey more power to him) I'd love however to see exactly what all his tats are.

Is it a HUGE cable hit and a modest broadcast hit? How do these numbers work in comparison?

"RE: Ep1 ratings"

>Is it a HUGE cable hit and a modest broadcast hit?
> How do these numbers work in comparison?

For channels like Scifi, Spike TV, etc. 1.5 millions is big.

...for "bigger" cable channels like MTV, USA Network, even FX, 1.5 isn't that big.

For example, Todd TV did 800k in its premiere and was a dud -- those numbers were BELOW what FX used to get running Cops repeats in the same slots. For Spike TV on the other hand, Joe Schmo's 800k premiere was good, and the numbers that followed were even better.

...but if those shows were on a channel like MTV -- where 3-4 million a week watch MTV's first Real World airing and 4-5 million watch something like Newlyweds, those numbers would be nothing. Then on the other hand you have something like USA's Nashville Star, which averaged just under 2 million a episode on Saturday nights last year, but Saturday nights are the black hour of viewership, so those were decent enough numbers there that USA brought it back again.

Scifi's numbers were good -- they were double what they normally get in the time period, and it was a very difficult time period, probably the most competitive period on TV (even moreso than Thursdays at 8PM.)

"RE: Ep1 ratings"
Posted by AZ_Leo on 03-10-04 at 11:16 AM
The ratings are probably somewhat higher. It would be interesting to see the combined ratings of the premiere and it's repeat this weekend. I know I completely missed it's first showing and from this thread, so did several others.

I wish Survivor would do a repeat somewhere during the week like most other shows seem to do. I would be less worried that my VCR would suddenly fail.

I think the show is very funny & interesting.

For those who have had CBS pulled by the Viacom/DISH Battle of the Titans, and will lose their CSI on Thursday--I say check it out! On the SciFi Channel.

To quote from Webby's article above,
For those who missed it, the Scifi Channel will rebroadcast Mad Mad House's premiere episode on March 11 at 8PM ET/PT -- right before the program's second episode airs in its regular 9PM ET/PT time period.

This was actually a really interesting show. I don't understand why people would want to be on the show if they don't plan on being involved in all the tasks though?? I think it would be a great experience to learn about new cultures and beliefs.

The contestants only knew it was a reality show. They were not pre-informed about who the hosts were, or the (alternative) nature of the activities they might be involved with.

SciFi seems to have stacked the houseguests with a fair number of very inflexible thinkers.

Kelly has some serious hate in her heart. I wonder if there is a release your hate, ceremony? I could not believe that she of was calling them freaks. Why were they screening out her chest at the begining of the match game? Was she braless? I also think that Kelly was maybe miss casted as a TOP, when maybe she should have been an ALT. How many 25 year old virgins that live in a convent, do you know?

I can’t believe that I didn't tape it! Darn!

I have such a hard time believing that she is 25 (I know she is though). She acts like she's 15 for corns' sake! Heck...my 14 year old neice is more mature and can handle herself in a more positive way!

The faces she made while releasing her anger was PRICELESS....I haven't laughed that hard in a while! LOL

The lawyers don't allow BRANDS to be shown on the TV withouth product placement CASH. If you notice, all the baseball caps and whatnot are blurred: if you don't pay you don't get placed! I wonder if they go to each company and try to get underwriting? I wish I knew about that sort of thing.

I really liked this one more than any of the other. I think Art and Avo are the coolest.
