"Shear Genius, Season 2, Introduction"

Am I the only one watching the filler show between Top Chef and Project Runway?
This show rather amuses me. The challenges are ludicrous. I don't know if any of you watched last season, but the ability to cut hair with garden shears really is not a skill *I* look for when choosing a stylist.

The host and judges:

Jaclyn Smith, the host and judge. Her bio tells us she is "an award winning actress, a designer and role model."

Kelly Atterton, judge, replaced Michael Carl as a judge. She is the West Coast editor of Allure magazine who recently broke the news "that a popular hair straightening treatment contained dangerously high levels of formaldehyde" and "has interviewed a number of celebrities".

Kim Vo, judge, replaced Sally Hershberger. From his bio, we get this interesting tidbit "Vo is also known as 'King of the TV Makeovers'." But seriously, he is recognized as a top colorist, and has been able to "develop and refine his own special approach to color, a technique that enables him to insure that hair and complexion are totally compatible and always with a natural look."

Rene Fris, mentor. "Hi, hi!" Fris' accolades have included: Head Stylist at Elizabeth Arden's Red Door Salon at Saks 5th Avenue, Celebrity Stylist for John Frieda Salons, Grooming Specialist on the TV series “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” in Europe, author of two best selling men's and women's grooming books, owner of an internationally acclaimed product line bearing his name, and a successful modeling career with the Wilhelmina Modeling Agency.

The stylists:

Charlie, 38, Denver, CO "has spent the last twenty years perfecting his craft of hairdressing"

Daniel, 28, Dallas, TX "began to do his parents hair at the age of nine"

Dee, 37, Miami, FL "stepped foot in the industry 10 years ago, and hasn't looked back since"

Gail, 25, Columbus, OH "entered college with the goal of becoming a doctor" but realized "her passion for the hair and beauty industry" and changed her major

Glenn, 36, Decatur, AL "Although Glenn entered college a chemical engineering major, it didn't take long for her figure out that this wasn't her true calling. At 23, she entered cosmetology school at a local community college and never looked back"

Matthew, 37, Dallas, TX "attended cosmetology school in Dallas in 1988". In a video clip, Matthew lets us know that the only thing he loves more than doing hair is his wife.

Meredith, 36, Chicago, IL "briefly attended fashion design school before realizing her true calling" In a video clip, I believe Meredith is the one who tells us she's just the cutest thing we've seen.

Nekisa, 29, Concord, CA "attended beauty school while still in high school and graduated from the International Beauty Academy at the age of 18"

Nicole, 24, New York City, NY "was a stylist for four years before landing her dream job with renowned stylist Nick Arrojo (arkie's note: hair makeover stylist for What Not To Wear) in New York"

Oshun, 31, Los Angeles, CA "discovered his passion for hair at age 10" He's deep, he's Oshun.

Parker, age not available on Bravo's site, West Palm Beach, FL "began his career as a stylist by acquiring a bachelor's degree as a sculptor. At 24, he attended the renowned Vidal Sassoon Academy ...first stylist to graduate the demanding Klinger Education Program"

Paulo 37, San Jose, CA "been in the hairstyling industry for over eighteen years"

After we meet the contestants, and learn that he's Oshun, he's deep, and some stuff about the others that I've pretty much already forgotten, we move on to the Shortcut challenge. The models all come in, and they're all wearing safety glasses. Jaclyn tells the stylists that people always say they "could do it blindfolded", now the stylists get to prove it and have 45 minutes to do so.

OK, WTH? How much do you think they have to pay the models to let someone wearing a blindfold come near them with a pair of scissors or other cutting implements? Safety glasses would NOT be enough protection, IMO.

Anyhoo...
here's the before and afters:

Charlie:

Daniel:

Dee:

Gail:

Glenn:

Matthew:

Meredith:

Nekisa:

Nicole:

Oshun (he's deep):

Paulo:

Parker:

When I look at some of these, I think it's obvious the stylist was blindfolded.

Kim Vo is the judge for this challenge, and will examine each cut and then rank the stylists in order.
And the winner is....
DEE! Dee will have an advantage in the elimination challege.
And in a very close second, Nicole. The bottom two are Nekisa and Oshun, with Oshun being put last.

On to the elimination challenge. Every stylist has customers come in with a picture of a celebrity and want the stylist to make them look like that celebrity. Well, today is no different. But wait! It is! Here are your celebrities:

The advantage Dee gets? To get first pick. And then the rest pick in the order Kim Vo placed them.

The results:
Charlie does Marge:

And so does Matthew:

Daniel takes on Wilma:

Gail's version of Wilma:

Dee's Betty Boop:

Parker's Boop-boop-de-boop:

She's Glenn! She's Jem!

Nicole's a Jem girl, too!

Oshun was left with Lucy:

Nekisa got to pick from Lucy, or Lucy. Guess what? She picked Lucy.

Meredith chose "daughter Judy"

Paulo's Judy Jetson:

I thought Matthew made his model look like a very ugly drag queen. I'm not sure how Gail thought that resembled in any way Wilma Flintstone. Nicole's model did not want her hair colored at all. I loved, loved, LOVED Daniel's Wilma. I want that color for my hair!

Guest judge Neeko Abriol (clients include Vanessa Williams, Mary J. Blige) joined Jaclyn, Kim, and what's-her-name from the magazine to decide this challenge.

Middle of the pack: Dee, Meredith, Nicole, Glenn, Parker, Paulo
Top three: Daniel, Nekisa, Charlie
Bottom three: Matthew, Gail, Oshun

Winner, with immunity for next elimination - Daniel
And the one sent home - Oshun, he's deep.

Nichole's model in the elimation challenge was/is a model on either Project Runway or Janice Dickinson's trainwreck of a show.
I cant find her pic/name anywhere but I am pretty sure she was on one of those shows.
So I just wonder what she is doing on THIS show. are they all real models or aspiring model/actors getting their hair cut to get their face out there or what?!

I pretty much expected all the people getting their hair cut responded to some sort of casting call and a good portion of them will be aspiring models or actresses. After all anything that gets your face out there is a good thing.

I figure a few of them are friends and family of the crew.

Oops, I forgot this was starting. Oh, wait, it is on Bravo and I can catch one of the 4512 re-runs they will have this week.

Thanks for getting all the pictures.

Forgot to set up the TiVo but I caught the re-run yesterday. Loved, loved, loved Parker's Betty Boop. Daniel's Wilma was also hot. I'm very happy that Gail was not sent home. I was really worried they were going to keep Oshun over her. He just had a horrible attitude.

Place witty comment here.

But he's deep.

I wonder if he really said it that many times, or if they just spliced the one clip in over and over.

Please, dear lord, let that just be the editing...although I think he really did say it more than once. He strikes me as a guy who can't live without the tagline he made up about himself.

I just watched that hot mess, and not in a so bad it's good hot tranny mess kinda way. In a I can't even love to hate you kinda way, I just hate you. I know they had to get all his annoying in that first hour because he was going home, but day-um I wanted to run a pair of nice sharp sheers through him a couple of dozen times.

Oh I was just holding back to dazzle them later. For someone that's "deep" you sure picked a kiddie pool shallow strategy.

I love this series....I don't consider it filler at all. Glad Sally isn't back on though, however, I may find that she wasn't that bad afterall.

I haven't seen the first episode as I was on vacation this week, so I haven't read anyone else's responses..yet!

To me, it's filler in the sense that it only has about half the number of episodes - 8 last season, while Top Chef and Project Runway get 14-16 episodes. I'm not sure how many this season will get, because Project Runway is supposed to start in, what?, 3 weeks? I don't know if this is going to be a really quick season, or if they plan on moving to a different time slot.

I don't know if this is going to be a really quick season, or if they plan on moving to a different time slot.

Project Runway is moving to the 9pm time slot when it starts up, so I assume this show will remain in its normal slot for however many episodes it has. Which is just fine with me. PR is a show that I like to watch the same night, whereas I will probably leave Shear Genius on the DVR for a few days before I watch it, so I'm glad PR is on earlier.

Tabatha is back.....I just love her. Snarky, truthful and like a good chic cut, blunt.

Quick cut challenge is long to short....some very impressive and some "what in the world were you thinking? Go back to "Great Clips."

Ahhh, the Housewives of Orange County....they matched oranges with numbers to members of the show. I found this challenge quite frustrating as many of the wives wanted no changes....what was the stylist to do? Very unfair. I love the H's of OC, but this challenge wasn't a challenge.

Kimberly, cut that hair off!!! It's not complimentary at all!
Vicki, you daughter can make her own decisions, it's only hair.
Laurie, no changes there AGAIN.

Can't remember her name, but the dark color is getting a little too harsh, she's no longer Kara's age. And I agree, Kara's bangs needed to be a tad shorter.

I was so hyped about this show, but it fell flat like a cheap haircut in a Louisiana summer.

So during the off season, apparently Mackenzie became a blond. She was cute as a brunette, but I guess OC isn't the place for *gasps* natural hair color.

The older, too-dark-hair-color woman who now resembles Cher is Tammy.

"Shear Genius 2, EP 3"
Posted by arkiegrl on 07-09-08 at 10:46 PM
Shortcut challenge - create an updo style that is interesting. The catch? The models all have really long hair, at least down to their waist, and in one instance, down to the floor, and they cannot cut even one strand of hair.

Charlie:

Daniel:

Dee:

Gail:

Glenn:

Matthew:

Meredith:

Nekisa:

Nicole:

Paulo:

The bottom two were Nekisa (because she didn't put in an accessory as required) and Nicole, with Nekisa being declared the loser.
Top two were Matthew and Charlie, with Matthew (who's so in love with his wife, in case you missed one of the thousand times he told us) getting the nod.

So for the elimination challenge, they are to create a style for the red carpet. Matthew gets the advantage of choosing his client first, and then assigning the order that the others get to pick. But there's a catch (again). Instead of picking the actual model, they make their choices based on the evening gown.

Charlie:

Daniel:

Dee:

Gail:

Glenn:

Matthew:

(The hair did not look this good when they were judging. The model told Matthew her hair would not hold a curl, and she was right. The curls had completely fallen out during the runway show.)

Meredith:

Nekisa:

Nicole:

Paulo:

Top three: Charlie, Glenn, Gail
Winner, with immunity next week, Charlie! for 2 weeks in a row.

Bottom three: Nicole, Matthew, Paulo
And Matthew gets to go home to his wife.

I'm still watching, but I find I'm not as interested in this cast as I was the first season's cast. I do like Paulo, though.

I thought last week's challenge involving the rotating of clients was insane, and I felt so bad for the girl who ended up with the orange-y red hair.

Last night's episode, with them working on the wigs, was very interesting. (And moving. I'll admit it, I teared up a little with Paulo and what's her name - the blond with the short haircut.) I think Paulo definitely deserved the win.

I started watching in the middle of last week's show, and saw all of this weeks - beach boys and wigs.

Nicole is definitely my SG crush. And I loved it when Glenn and Daniel spent so much time bashing her for being new and inexperienced and all, and then she ends up in the top in both challenges, while they end up in the bottom.

Started with some coloring challenge that Kenisha screwed up and then blamed her sink. Paulo was the other one in the bottom. Top 2 were Dee and Charlie - easy choices, with Charlie winning

The main challenge featured a "Charlie's Angels" challenge, with Kate jackson as guest judge. The stylists had to pair up - Charlie picked teams, and acted as a roving stylist - and take three women, and give them updated versions of the Charlie's Angels hairstyles.

Not a single one of them "got it", and there was no winner declared. And they got scolded by Jaclyn for sucking so badly. Nekisa and Glenn were the worst, and Glenn got the boot.

Random thoughts about the episode in no particular order:

Paulo at least recognized that he made a mistake. Nikesa never does.

Is this a first that they didn't think any of them were worthy of winning? Too funny.

The three strong contestants in my eyes: Nicole, Charlie and Dee. Although I like Paulo too.

Charlie is being quite a nuisance. To think we only see portions, he would drive me wild.

Kate was almost as incoherent as Farrah. Did she ever really give any true critique?

Both Kate and Jaclyn are still quite attractive.....

I'm glad none of them were declared the winner.

Updated does not mean a bad caricature of the style. I do agree the hair from then especially Farrah's and Jaclyn's were all about the movement of the hair in the wind more than the curls.

If the hair they had wouldn't curl like that without being glued into submission then I'd have done a straight style with lots of layers and just flicked out the ends with a flat iron. There are lots of cool modern bobs they could have done for Kate and none of them did anything with that.

So disappointed.

The guys on this show are so funny!
I'm not sure I'd let any one of them get anywhere near my head with scissors or dye tho.

I thought the advantage for the winner of the kid's cut was that he'd get to choose one from 2 of his family members that were brought in. But it was more interesting that they had to do each other's family members.

I felt a bit sorry for Dee's mother - that cut was super short!

I have to say too that I will not be missing seeing Paulo's nose studs. It was hard for me to look at the tv when he was on. I thought the little girl had a time not staring at him! LOL

Ugh, I would have had a hard time letting Charlie touch my mother (God rest her soul). Just because he turns me off. Once in a while, he does pull out a great 'do, though.

So far, I want a Dee/Nicole/Daniel finale', with Dee winning.

I want Nicole to win, but I won't be surprised if Charlie wins.

Unless Dee does something DRASTICALLY different that what she usually does, she won't win. They commented last week that a lot of what she does is the same time after time.

"That other hair salon show"
Posted by mattben on 09-27-08 at 06:48 AM
Emerald and I are liking a show (maybe on Bravo) who's title I can't remember right now. It's got a Tabatha who comes in -- a la Hell's Kitchen Chef-esque on his spinoff show -- to a disfunctional hair salon and commandos them into improving.

Dang, can't remember the title or network.

"RE: That other hair salon show"
Posted by aquariaqueen on 09-28-08 at 01:20 PM
On Bravo....Tabatha's Salon Takeover!

I love this show. She tells them what they need to hear, however, I do find her a bit unprofessional when she talks like a sailor. I was more shocked when she cussed in front of a customer. That disappoints me to much since I loved her on Shear Genius, and I think she knows what she's talking about.

When the one guy called her Cruela Deville, I kinda had to laugh because she's so starkly pail and always wears black.
