Another week, another tough choice who to keep as this week's 'American Idol'.

Greetings from Ryan. Bad news last week as we bid adieu to Ace. Ryan introduces the judges.

Tonight the contestants will have two, count 'em two, phone numbers.

This week Andrea Bocellli will coach the contestants.

eta: David Foster will also be working with the contestants. David may not have Andrea's voice, but he plays hardball when it comes to arrangements and voice quality.

Singing 'I Have Nothing', written by David Foster. Brave girl.

Standing center stage, long yellow halter dress. Handles key change very well. Girl has pipes, no doubt about it. Adds a little growl. Visible panty line, 10 demerits.

1-866-IDOLS-01 or 1-866-IDOLS-07

Judges' comments: Randy, was worried about this week, good song choice, was too big for her, didn't come close. Paula, she is stunning, pitch problems, doesn't need to oversing, it's a difficult song. Simon, choosing that song was like saying she was as good as Whitney Houstin, and she wasn't, bad advice.

Yeah, the wardrobe was a bit...uh...too risque, if I'm being nice. Of course, that is Larry's place, but it was a little too much skin, even for love song week.

Not that I didn't enjoy the view.

B) Drunk
C) seriously mentally ill

She's no Whitney...

but, the judges were way too harsh on that performance, and it reeks of the criticisms they gave someone like Scott Savol or John Stephens when they really wanted them out. I have no idea where that came from and she wasn't nearly as bad as they said.

For what it's worth, I don't think it is fair for a show that has a Stevie ****ing Wonder week to say that "Unless you sing like Whitney (and few can), you shouldn't do that song". Of course, I'm biased. I just think they should judge on the performance itself instead of an artist who sang it 13 years ago.

"RE: Katherine McPhee"
Posted by geekboy on 04-25-06 at 08:04 PM
I disagree. Its the final six. This is where they start to get ever harsher, and deservedly so.

"RE: Katherine McPhee"
Posted by Fishercat on 04-25-06 at 08:08 PM
I really don't care where it is. They forced singers like Kellie Pickler to sing Freddie Mercury and Stevie Wonder, so I don't see where the show's on screen representatives can tell someone to not sing a song by a specific artist when one of their pets was overpowered by similarly strong artists.

"RE: Katherine McPhee"
Posted by sica077 on 04-25-06 at 09:54 PM
Exactly, geekboy. "Put up or shut up" is my motto lately. And I, personally, could have done without seeing her undies tonight during her slit mishap (even if they did match her dress ). Although I am sure many will disagree with me!

"RE: Katherine McPhee"
Posted by capcomguy on 04-25-06 at 10:00 PM
I dont think they were saying sing like Whitney but rather be as good or better, however, that is almost an unattainable goal isn't it? The start of the song was horrendous but she didn't deserve that level of criticism.

"RE: Katherine McPhee"
Posted by archon on 04-26-06 at 08:21 AM
True - she is no Whitney...

But, Whitney is no Whitney anymore either... So who cares...

The judges were far too harsh - and the first thing I said to Mrs. Archon after the performance was "They want her gone".

I though her version of the song was pretty -- not great, but certainly not the catterwalling we have heard from Pickler in the past. It was also nice to see her dress like a woman with a figure for a change. Ok the VPL was a bit overthetop and she was probably wearing a dress 1/2 size to small. But, the cameraman (and I say camera-MAN) made sure to shoot her from above the mid-section quite often. No complaints...

What i found odd for Katherine (despite the fact she chose the uber-diva Whitney song) was that she was moving around as much as she was on stage, and doing Bo-ish mic stand moves. I kept thinking "This isn't Katherine...weird". I thought she belted it out pretty good, but her voice seemed all over the place, and again 'not like Kat'.

I thought the performances were at least comparable?

"RE: Elliott Yamin"

I just rewatched both performances, and honestly, they were extremely comparable to me. Both had strong voices, both were relatively consistant (Elliot more so), I thought Katharine had more charisma. On the whole, they'll likely be next to each other in my rankings.

"RE: Elliott Yamin"

Yep! I dont dislike Elliot. He has a great voice but just doesn't have the 'oomph' factor. I just cant put my finger on why he doesn't make me notice his performances.

Elliott has such a fabulous voice. He needs some stage training, g-d lvoe him. I lvoe this song and his redition was great.

Judges' comments. Randy, didn't like arrangement, but liked his vocals, was 'da bomb' tonight. Paula, he moved her, celebrated what this competition is all about, he is an American Idol (she's in tears). Simon, 7 weeks ago he said he was one of the best male vocalists they've ever had, tonight in parts was like a vocal master class, was superb.

Here's my thing with Kellie...why is it that off of stage, she has more personality than the whole bunch put together, but on stage she is boring as hell? I feel like she could have really belted out and finished at least a little better than she started, but she just completely lacks the stage charisma needed to really "bring it home" per sae. If it is not part of the chorus or a "dramatic" part of the song, I can't understand what she is singing, nor do I care to. I honestly don't really like her in general, but she could have "kicked it up a notch." Even during that ONE high note that was interesting, her face was blank and was completely lacking emotion. And every time I hear her say something like, "I was scared," or, "It was the nerves," etc. I just scream at the TV! Don't blame anyone but yourself, hun; you got yourself here...suck it up, girlfriend!

I think it's true though, the Luv Factor will keep her alive, but I don't think it will keep her out of the bottom 3.

1-866-IDOLs-03 or 1-866-IDOLS-09.

Wavering in the quiet moments, tries to bring in home in the big notes.

Judges' comments: Randy, pitch problems, high notes were in tune, not the right song. Paula, don't see her raising the bar each week, doesn't feel greatness from her. Simon, felt like the never-ending song, monotonous and bland, no heart, no warmth, like a robot during the performance.

Not a Paris fan. Way to annoying for me, but the girl can sing. If only she would stop with the make believe 6 year old talking voice. She wasn't great, but not bad either. She has no persona of her own. Every week she's somebody else. I think maybe she'd be better in plays where she has a defined role/character. Anyway, if she goes, I won't cry.

Simon hit it on the head with his comment. Paris does not sing -- she does an impression of a famous singer singing! Last night sounded like Dionne Warwick.

I was a Paris fan early on -- but it has become very very obvious that the girl has been trained to sing LIKE other famous singers. I do not believe she even knows what her own singing voice and style are like.

Good thing she is young -- she has time to discover who she truly is -- but won't do it fast enough to win this contest...

A student of mine calls her Duckie. I guess because her
speaking voice sounds like Daffy Duck. It is cartoonish;
one can imagine her being drawn with an average sized head
when she talks, but when she sings, she is drawn with a
huge duck lips. Remember, we're talking cartoon here.

"PARIS"

is an excellent singer. For some reason, people don't like her (her appearance, her background, her speaking voice, whatever), and that apparently informs interpretations of the quality of her singing.

She was way better than The Pickle, yet there are more disparaging comments about her singing. Regardless of who this teenager may be imitating, she is a better technical singer than at least 3 other people in the competition.

From what I can hear, her vocal chords aren't set yet (she is very young), but when they do, she will be phenomenal.

But she was not horrible last night. The Pickle and Taylor were. Chris wasn't far behind, because he won't get out of singing in his neck. If he doesn't correct this, he will ruin his vocal chords. But at least he can sing.

It's good, it seemed to go flat and into an almost "speaking" song at points. Don't think he's any better than Elliott or Katharine, but he was better than the other two. Very nice, strong voice as the song ended.

Note: I hate when they compare songs to the original. Horseshit. These are original people FORCED to do covers for the show.

Maybe it's just me, or I am reminiscing over the S3 Final 6, where the three divas were B3. Are they trying to orchestrate it again. Of course, Taylor likely deserved the bashing, but they have to be aiming for a Taylor/Katharine/Kellie (popularity wise for the first and last) B3.

I would purchase a Taylor CD, still not sure if he is 'Idol' material. IMO the best thing that could happen to him is to come in second.

Judges' comments: Randy, felt was the wrong song for him, didn't get it, not half as good as the original. Paula, babble, babble, babble, wasn't her favorite song, looked good tonight. Simon, will be honest, taking performance outside of 'Idol', can hear any night in any hotel, the phrasing, the performance, not a winning performance.

First off, admittedly i'm just as positively biased towards Taylor as I am against Paris.

I thought Foster was right - that he has the charisma and picked a great song. I'm confused by the judges on this one. I thought he performed well. His low notes were a bit soft, but overall i thought he did great. Its love songs, you need to show your softer side.

I'm with you - pro Taylor / anti-Paris, but Taylor didn't wow me this week - or last, for that matter. He seemed to just sleepwalk through most of the song and then tried to ressurect it at the end - same as last week. Song choices could have been better. When is he gonna do a Ray Charles song???? Would be sooooooooooo natural for him and I would love to see him doing it with the moves (ala Ray Charles) that he showed early on. That quirkiness and the sound would be awesome.

Think he'll be OK with the voting because of his fan base this week, but he's got to step it up a notch from now on.

You don't have to be 'the Fashion Man' to know that a velour or velveteen tuxedo a few sizes too small is not the right choice for a 'full-figured fellow'. Come to think of it, I can hardly think of anyone that outfit would have flattered. He might appeal to those who 'want you to be my Teddy Bear'. Last week his suit and shirt was the best I've seen him in so far. There was a glimpse of him wearing a black leather jacket in one of the backstage videos and he looked really good. Maybe a good change on his suits would be a weathered black leather jacket, distressed black jeans, and a dove grey t-shirt.

Taylor, that was horrible. Your phrasing was off. You exhibited pitch indefinition throughout the song. You also are singing in your neck (straining and using incorrect technique). Bad for your chords and bad for your listeners' ears. It hurt to hear you.

I am picking you as my favourite to win this year, but you need to step up. I love the idea upthread that you need to sing "Yo Mo Be There." That's the kind of love song that works well for you, because it doesn't require sustained legato lines. I think your phrasing instincts work better with songs that have syncopated rhythms in the bass line. You respond well to these arrangements, and you sing with more spontaneity and warmth. There are plenty of love songs with these patterns. Pick any of those the next time.

But hang in there. I hope you squeak through this week past that horrible Pickle.

And Chris ups the ante with TWO guitarists.

I must note, I like conformist Chris, with the differing styles. Now, if he can get a good genre, how about a rockout song?

Well, this song has part of the Chris we all know. I like it in moderation.

OK, I'm officially back on the Chris bandwagon

1) Chris
2) Elliott
3) Katharine
4) Taylor
5) Paris
6) Kellie

Notes: 2 and 3 are interchangeable, the rest are pretty well set apart.

This week was definitely not as good as last week when only one performer (Kellie) sounded awful. This week the only performances that I liked were Katharine and Elliott, and they could have been better as well.

I am puzzled by the way the judges completely tore Katharine's perfomance apart when they have yet to criticize Kellie as harshly even with several really bad sounding weeks. Weird. Besides, like Paula's songs were all that great back when she had a career. Whatever.

Taylor and Chris were next best, and I did not think they sounded good. Lastly for me are Paris and Kellie, with Kellie once again having the absolute worst sounding performance.

Overall, I wasted an hour. It was disappointing for this far into the competition.

From best to last tonight:
Chris has solid talent and is really learning from his famous mentors. I think he is the logical choice for AI winner.
Taylor looked better when he was younger and fitter. Hopefully when the stress of the contest is over he will pump some iron and skip a few desserts. I like his voice and presentation, but tonight wasn't the best.
Katherine is a beauty and has a voice that will serve her well. Afte wearing too many dowdy outfits, she let her new confidence take her a little too far, but I like that she's blooming into accepting her glamour.
Elliot should get tooth work that will turn his genial smile into something not so cringe worthy. I am never particularly excited by his performances, but the judges and some others seem to think he has a great voice.
Paris has talent, but not real direction. She would benefit from a few years of maturity, and perhaps a vocal coach for her speaking voice.
Kelly really is a southern fried minx, it just depends on whether or not you like minxes. Her hair and makeup tonight were a mistake, but she is prettier than several blonde singers who regularly make the news with their dumb behavior.

It finally happened tonight. Elliot gave us the first "WOW" of the season, at least for me that is.

He has shown the most growth and the most consistancy of everyone this season. Initially he had a major case of the nerves and self doubt, but tonight even with his chat with Ryan, he was literally exuding confidence. He lost his nerves last week, and tonight it was magic.

I hope it pulls him through and out of the bottom 3 again. He is starting to be the only one that I feel deserves to win this. There is talent this year, but I'm starting to feel that with Elliot's example, we're noticing that a few have been on the 'cruise control'.

I love you, Taylor, but take note of what Elliot has been doing. I'm still waiting for your "WOW" moment, which i had expected to have a few by now.

Last night, that is.

Kat sounded fantastic last night!! And they butchered her. I'm more convinced than ever that they're wanting to ensure a guy (Chris, specifically) wins, and Kat is his strongest competition, so they have to get rid of her. Last week she blew them away, and became a HUGE threat. So this week they put her in the "death spot" and rip her apart.

And I'm not the only one that thinks this way. I'm not just blinded by oobies (which were spectacular last night), either. They bashed all the gals (and Taylor, who's fallen out of favor) and pumped up Elliot and Chris.

Speaking of Elliot, moved to tears, Paula?? TEARS?!?! Puh.
LEEEEZ!! I mean, yeah he was pretty good this week, but tears?!?!

They had a favorite last year in Bo, and ended up with he and a gal (Carrie) in the final two, and the girl won. this year, they don't want that to happen again, giving a third girl in a row the win. So they're gonna make sure it's Chris v. Elliot. This will then support what they've said all along that a guy will win this year, and what a strong bunch of guys they have. They didn't plan on Kat sneaking in and doing as well as she's done. So now they have to fix it.

And yes, when I said "fix", that's what I meant.

"I agree with everything you said except that Carrie was clearly Simon's favorite. He picked her to win it all early on last year."

You couldn't be more wrong with that statement. Simon did NOT favor Carrie, but he acknowledged that the VOTERS favored Carrie. He has before and SINCE exclaimed how he did not like Carrie. Simon detests Country & he thought Carrie had no personality.

This year Simon's favorites are Chris, first & foremost, and Elliott. He thinks America's top 3 will be Chris, Taylor & Kellie. Simon can't stand Taylor and I think he's backing off the last 2 weeks from his adoration of Kellie.

"RE: Such horsecrap tonight!!!!"

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one because Simon wanted Carrie to win because he wanted to get onto the "country bandwagon". The fact that he personally detests country was put on the back burner to the amount of money he could and is generating from her genre. He wanted a country winner.

While Kat is technically a beautiful singer, she was horrible last night. She looked breathtakingly gorgeous. But she was trying too hard or something. I think her trying to "step up" her performance really really hurts her vocals. That one really hott part where she stomped to the right of the screen? I can see why people put their ears on mute because it was so freaking hot but I listened and it hurt my ears. If the rest of her performance was good (which I don't believe that it was), this would have killed it for me. After that she stood still and had to gasp for air. She tries to oversing and it hurts her. There were way.too.many. places where she was out of tune or off key. During rehearsal? She was amazing. If she could have a personality and sing at the same time, I’d rank her right up there with Chris. Last week was her genre. She was expected to do well. Put her out of her comfort zone and it’s hit or miss. And I’ll have to go back through the rankings, but iirc, it’s usually a miss.

And I too was moved to tears by Elliott's performance.

Randy started the season by saying that there would be a male winner, and he is reiterating this in current interviews. That is called "making sociology," and it is unfair for these judges to lobby for outcomes on the show. If they are going to do that, then they should simply bag the competition and pick their favourite boy toy at the top 12 stage.

Kat is the best sounding AND looking singer in the competition. Her training and preparation are paying off.

Elliott is a great sounding and not great looking singer. They need to get rid of Kat to keep him in.

Chris is as boring as chopped liver to me (so is Elliott), but he has a nice voice. His technique is uneven. The judges and producers compensate for his deficiencies by making sure that he gets the glory spot on the show. If they want a rocker to win so badly, then they should have chosen Bo last year. He is way better than Chris.

Taylor is the best overall performer, and his soul and warmth can sell me anything. He is also an uneven stylist; that is why he bombs so many times when asked to sing ballads. If he wins, I'll be happy because I like him. But it won't be because he is the best singer in the competition.

Paris is a wonderful singer. She needs to mature a little more, but that lack of maturity does not excuse the horrible judges' comments against her. She is much better than they will ever admit. It doesn't matter, though. She'll get snapped up by a label and pay her way through med school between jazz albums. For all of the player haters out there, that is what exceptionally gifted people do. They get on with their lives in spite of unfair judgements against them. Bravo, Paris.

Kellie is an accident that has happened, and there is absolutely nothing constructive to say about her performances. They need to put us out of our misery and send this child home.

The fact that The Pickle is even in the competition proves to me that the show is rigged.

The judges definitely seem to have an agenda. Their comments on Kat almost seemed prearranged and rehearsed and, from the start, they have been campaigning for a male winner (Like they've done so well with Ruben).

"Moved to tears"...the only ones that did that for me were Kellie, because she was sooooo bad, again, and Paula, because she is soooooooooo deranged and embarrasing.

The judges should stop the pushing and make real and meaningful and constructive comments, not self serving ones and please replace Paula and allow Simon to speak. 1st it's the lunatic constantly interrupting and now he gets cut off by Ryan. Can't she be cut off?

"RE: Such horsecrap tonight!!!!"
Posted by Fishercat on 04-26-06 at 01:51 PM
I have to agree.

I watched all of the major performances regarding the comment (Chris, Elliott, Katharine), thrice. Two different kinds of speakers, with and without sight, internet and television, take your pick. Basically, I only saw minor differences between the three. I thought Elliott had a more vocally consistant performance than Chris/Kat. I thought Chris infused his own style more than either Elliott/Kat. I thought Kat had more charisma this week than Elliott/Chris. I thought they were almost on equal par, and easily the Top 3. If I had to rank, it was Chris, Elliott, Kat.

However, the disparity in the reviews was...well..not right. They know that Kellie sucks too much to win this competition (well, we hope). They know that Paris is no threat. However, Kat has a lot of what people look for in a female contestant, mainly a knockout singing voice, versatility, and looks. She is the closest to the full package for a pop star.

I don't think they are actively trying to get rid of her, but at the very least, I think their critiques were highly suspicious...

"RE: Such horsecrap tonight!!!!"
Posted by sylvester on 04-26-06 at 02:21 PM
I agree NB, the judge's comments were horsecrap last night. A very poorly disguised attempt to get their favorites into the finals.

I don't think they will be successful though with an Eliott/Chris final 2. There are too many of us Soul Patrolers, and Taylor will be in the final 2. Elliott's fanbase seems to be growing by leaps and bounds though, so I'm unsure now whether it will be him or Chris in the finals with Taylor.

I had maintained all along that the final 4 would be Kat, Kellie, Taylor & Chris. I have finally changed my mind, and think Ms. Pickler will go out next week, and Elliott will get his place in the final 4.

Oh, and I don't think Taylor's ever been 'in favor'. Simon didn't want him in the competition at all, and is absolutely horrified that he leads the votes every week. Hence his comment in an interview that he had a horrible feeling Taylor Hicks would win the whole thing.
