"TAR 18 Ep5 ECST"

When we last left the Race, Margie/Luke had won the previous leg, but... as per the new NEL mandate, it seems... they were immediately sent back out into the course.

Zev/Justin were on the Horn portion of the Detour, and the Goths were trying to head for the Detour, but (for the 2nd time that leg) had left behind their travel documents, this time at the gondola at the mountain that reached nearly 3 miles in height...

Also to note, East Coast US is 18 minutes behind, due to the finish of the Ohio State-George Mason game... (and it could easily be worse, as there are still 3 games being played as of this posting, with coverage on TBS, TNT, and Tru TV...)

No delay here as we're using the local channel instead of the CBS channel...

We start with Zev and Justin arriving at the pit stop in 8th place and getting their clue to continue the race.

Kent and Vyxsin realize they must have left their fanny pack on a gondola, so they get their bus driver to take them back. They go to the top of the gondola station and discover someone has found it and dropped it off at the lost and found in the office there. They're safe! K/V rush down, get the clue, complete the tasks and are told by Phil they've got to sit out a 30-minute penalty for missing the mandatory flight at the beginning of the previous episode.

And yet... they catch up to the rest of the teams at a bunching point!

We're now off to Kunming, China via train. Teams sleep on a triple-decker -- three rows of beds stacked up on top of each other.

After teams find the clue, make your way by taxi to the Golden Horse and Jade Memorial Arches for their next clue.

One of the other teams stole Big Easy and Flight Time's taxi and these two are left without one in a deserted area...

Detour - Honor Past or Embrace Future

Honor past - watch a Tibetan performance and match a set of dolls to the performance

Embrace Future - must offload a solar panel (? - missed the last bit), carry boxes up a set of stairs

Ron/Christina see a McDonald's -- "I don't think that's the 'Golden Arches' they mean in the clue!"

After completing the detour, proceed to the Chinese Heritage Minority Center - there's a double u-turn here. Hmmm.

Three teams arrive at the Cultural Center ... but it's the wrong one! They were taken to the Kunming one by the taxis when they actually wanted the Yunnan one.

At the U-turn clue marker, the Goths and Cara/Jaime arrive at almost the same time. They discuss u-turning the Globetrotters because "they're the strongest" and the Goths go and put up a picture ... but when they leave, it's actually Jaime/Cara's picture they put up and the girls are screwed.

"RE: TAR 18 Ep5 ECST"
Posted by PepeLePew13 on 03-20-11 at 08:33 PM
Cara and Jaime then go ahead and slap on the Globetrotters' pic to u-turn them.

So... it appears the last two teams this week will be the cheerleaders and the Globetrotters as they both will have to do an u-turn.

"RE: TAR 18 Ep5 ECST"
Posted by PepeLePew13 on 03-20-11 at 08:35 PM
Both teams have to go back and do the Honor Past task. Cara/Jaime finish it before the Globetrotters get there -- good thing or that might have been a really awkward moment if both teams were there at the same time!

Roadblock - build a 20-foot replica of a Dilopsauras and get it approved by a paleontologist to get their next clue.

"RE: TAR 18 Ep5 ECST"
Posted by PepeLePew13 on 03-20-11 at 08:41 PM
Hmmm. Even with the u-turns for two teams, they still are ahead of Zev/Justin and Gary/Mallory at the roadblock clue marker.

Gary and Mallory save themselves from last place by electing to use the Express Pass now to skip doing the roadblock!

They head straight for the Pit Stop...

It was the Cowboys that stole the cab - wonder if the viewers will be as hateful to them for stealing a cab as they were when Sam & Dan did the same thing.

and are told by Phil they've got to sit out a 30-minute penalty for missing the mandatory flight at the beginning of the previous episode.

If this wasn't an NEL, that would stand a chance to be the new reality show definition of Insult To Injury.

ETA: When I wrote that, the episode hadn't started in the States and I mistakenly assumed K&V had been held up at the intermediary mat.

"RE: TAR 18 Ep5 ECST"
Posted by kidflash212 on 03-20-11 at 09:37 PM
Having a penalty imposed seemed wrong to me - it's not like missing the flight gave them any advantage, it cost them a great deal of time already. Shouldn't a penalty be imposed when racers gain some advantage by their actions?

"RE: TAR 18 Ep5 ECST"
Posted by Estee on 03-20-11 at 09:43 PM
I think that's one for the Slaps tomorrow. They'd arguably already been set back enough, and there wasn't a gain to be found.

"RE: TAR 18 Ep5 ECST"

& that's where they SHOULD have had to wait out the penalty.

Teams will be taking a train to a Flower Market (one of which I think they've been there before...)

Earliest train isn't until 7:15pm so teams will get a chance to catch up.

We get to see the Goths complete the remainder of the tasks from the previous leg. Good news, you're still racing, bad news, 30 minute penalty before check-in at the NEXT Pit Stop location....

WARNING: DOUBLE U-TURN WILL APPEAR THIS LEG OF THE RACE

Goths pledge to not tell anyone about the penalty, since that would put a target on their backs...

Since there is some down time: Globetrotters, Sista Act, and Cowboys split up to a side and play some basketball with the Cheerleaders doing some cheers along the way.

Goths finally catch up as they're now eating and resting... and they lie about not getting a penalty...

Triple-decker accomodations... and Zev/Justin are on the top bunks near teh roof!

"RE: TAR 18 Ep5 ECST"
Posted by michel on 03-20-11 at 09:07 PM
It was fun to finally see the Globetrotters playing basketball. Long overdue fun moment. It must have been a thrill to play with them. Teams looked like they had fun. Good thing even if it meant a stupid bunching point.

BTW, why does the superleg eliminate the speed bump? The last team doesn't even get a penalty anymore just a free pass.

"RE: TAR 18 Ep5 ECST"
Posted by CTgirl on 03-20-11 at 10:22 PM
Probably because it's a superleg instead of non-elimination. Even though they are giving out prizes for finishing first no one is penalized because they are still racing. I like it better than taking all the possessions and money or having to do a lame speed bump.

IIRC from the last superleg several seasons ago, the team in last wasn't penalized either.

"RE: TAR 18 Ep5 ECST"
Posted by michel on 03-21-11 at 07:18 PM
No one hated the "take the money" penalty more than me. Seeing rich Americans begging for money in poor countries was outrageous. Some speed bumps have been lame. BUT, I'd say that a super-leg shouldn't have an automatic bunching point either. Continuing to race should be just that: Continue to race directly to the next pit stop, catch up if you can. If you can't...Well, too bad for you.

where the heck have they been hiding a basketball??

"RE: TAR 18 Ep5 ECST"
Posted by PepeLePew13 on 03-20-11 at 09:28 PM
It's China, home of Yao Ming... it's a rapidly-growing basketball market. Somebody probably had a basketball around there, or they bought one from a market in the area of the pit stop.

"RE: TAR 18 Ep5 ECST"
Posted by jbug on 03-20-11 at 09:33 PM
but I thought I heard one of the cowboys say
"I heard the globe trotters have a basketball"
which sounded to me like they had been carrying it around all the time!

"RE: TAR 18 Ep5 ECST"
Posted by Estee on 03-20-11 at 09:44 PM
Deflate & folded next to a miniature air pump. It wouldn't add that much weight and they've got a higher carrying capacity than most teams anyway.

Wonder how it works with cabs? Do they pay them up to that point and then ask them to wait? Seems strange that cabs would be willing to wait.

"Globetrotters were the last one to leave, but Cowboys end up with their taxi (pretty much by accident)"

I didn't see it as an accident, the cab they came in had left so they took the only other cab that was there. They clearly knew it wasn't their cab.

Honor the Past or Embrace the Future

With some teams accidentally being taken to the 'Golden Arches' of McDonald's

Honor the Past, which has them in costume and then placing dolls in the order of the people stood on stage, it appears... the room to place isn't the same one that the performers are in...

Embrace the Future which has them hauling solar plumbing up the steps of the Great China Wall building and then install them in their proper place...

Next up is the Chinese Minority History Center, where the Double U-Turn is lurking!

"Finish Order..."

Pit stop is at Green Lake Park in Kunming.

1st - Jet/Cord - they win $5000 each.
2nd - Gary/Mallory

Kent falls off a ladder and lands right on top of it just before we cut to commercial! Looks painful...

"RE: Finish Order..."
Posted by PepeLePew13 on 03-20-11 at 08:56 PM
1st - Jet/Cord - they win $5000 each.
2nd - Gary/Mallory
3rd - Margie/Luke
4th - Kisha/Jen
5th - Kent/Vyxsin (fourth team to arrive, but served a 30-minute penalty)
6th - Flight Time/Big Easy
7th - Ron/Christina - just barely made it steps ahead of Z/J
8th - Zev/Justin
Philiminated - Cara/Jaime - Jaime had a bit of a meltdown during the roadblock and kept saying she couldn't breathe. Just could never figure out the right way to put the dinosaur together until well after Zev/Justin left.

"Double U-Turn and current order"
Posted by vince3 on 03-20-11 at 08:46 PM
Zev/Justin, Sista Act, and Ron/Christina all traveled together, and missed the correct place!

Margie/Luke are 1st, no U-Turn

Teams must now travel to the Stone Forest.

Cowboys are 2nd, no U-Turn
Goths are 3rd, U-Turn Cheerleaders after Vyxsin and the Cheerleaders all argue for Globetrotters to get hit...

"RE: Double U-Turn and current order"
Posted by vince3 on 03-20-11 at 08:53 PM
Goths remember that last time they hit a team that was ahead of them and hit the Cheerleaders because they KNEW that they were behind them.

Cheerleaders then hit the Globetrotters.

Zev/Justin, Gary/Mallory, Sista Act, Cowboys all arrive and rejoice that they can't/won't be hit by the U-Turn and head to the Stone Forest...

Globetrotters finally find out they got hit and return to Honor the Past.

Cheerleaders complete Honor the Past and are in 8th on the way to the Detour...

Globetrotters are done with Honor the Past as well...

Cheerleaders get flashback of their last Race because their driver has to (again) stop for gas...

I guess we now know that you don't have to complete both sides of the detour, when you are u-turned, in order to u-turn another team.

Priceless even. U-Turn a team standing there watching you simply because you know they aren't ahead of you, perfectly logical. Just bad luck the Cheerleaders were there with the Goths, could have happened to anybody.

Considering that Vyxsin nearly had a complete meltdown last time, they did recover well and get back in the thick of things.

Who's ready for a task 65 million years in the making? They have to build a life-size replica of a dinosaur.

Sista Act 1st, Margie/Luke 2nd, Ron/Christina 3rd... Goths 4th

Christina, Kent, Keesha, Margie are doing the tasks for their teams.

Globetrotters pass Cheerleaders on the way to the Stone Forest...

Cowboys 5th, Trotters 6th, Cheerleaders 7th, Zev/Justin and Gary/Mallory bring up the rear...

Gary/Mallory use the Express Pass to escape the Roadblock and take the lead!

Green Lake Park back in Kunming is the next Pit Stop location

We're off to Calcutta Kolkata, India! And holy cow, there's a massive tea party, where it appears that each team must drink until they find a clue at the bottom of a tea cup. Luke goes into massive meltdown mode as the tea was apparently his breaking point.

Cowboys escape 2nd, and get their theme played as they exit.

Margie/Luke escape 3rd.

Finish placings:

Cowboys 1st, win $5000 each!
Gary/Mallory 2nd

Goths having issues, Kent uses the ladder... TIMBER! *ouch!* (he landed on the ladder)

Margie/Luke finish 3rd.

Sista Act and Goths are out of the Roadblock in 4th/5th, but Sista Act's taxi's gone!

Globetrotters are out of the Roadblock 6th.

Goths arrive at the Pit Stop and the clock starts on their penalty accrued in the previous leg.

Sista Act finish 4th.
Goths finish 5th.
Globetrotters finish 6th just after the penalty time elapses...

Ron/Christina escape the Roadblock in 7th. Zev/Justin and Cheerleaders are the only ones left at the Roadblock.

Zev/Justin escape the Roadblock in 8th... Jamie has to pretty much have to jump on the thing to take it apart to correctly fix it...

Ron/Christina finish 7th, Zev/Justin finish barely behind in 8th...

Death March for the Cheerleaders and they're Philiminated.

Not sure I'm so ready to give the Trotters much credit for their comeback - they benefitted from three teams following a cab driver to the wrong cultural center and a task where their height and strength gave them an advantage.

Their interview with our site has extra information on U-Turn delay, how long it was taking people to do the roadblock, and the perils of stopping for fuel. Unlike their original postgame wrapup (which mostly produced '...' across the continent), this one's full of behind-the-editing glimpses. Very useful.
