We are getting to the recappage of Amazing Race History. They must have cut out a few commercials or something, we are actually starting less than an hour after 60 minutes started. Weird.

On the one hand, everyone gets angry after being U-Turned. On the other, we did see Carol & Brandy's claws come out in first-person at last, instead of relying on someone else's report. Whether that balances is an individual call.

But Louie & Michael? Are idiots. Sure, train your wolf cubs -- but you want Jet & Cord in the F3 over Dan & Jordan? Gee, what is their criteria for eliminating people? It's a mystery, really. Better call a real detective.

Yes, really... you've been harping on this often enough, I'd like to know what makes you think that they've been more obsessed with Caite than the other way around?

In the first episode, they did what a lot of people would have done in pointing out that Caite was "that girl on Youtube who couldn't put a coherent sentence together" when they recognized her the first time. Since then, there's been one other time where Caite's status as a beauty contestant was brought up by Carol/Brandy. It's not something we've been shown as an obsession by Carol/Brandy through the editing. The last bit tonight after the U-Turn was understandable as they had just been U-Turned and were angry, but was still unnecessary from Carol/Brandy as they could still have taken the high road.

Caite opened the door in the first place by subjecting herself to exposure on TV after bungling her way through that infamous performance on TV in the beauty pageant. If she doesn't like being referred to as a beauty queen, she shouldn't have entered that contest in the first place or put herself on TV knowing that is what she's famous for in the first place.

By contrast, Caite has referred to them as "the lesbians" in every single episode (often several times) and talked loudly and openly about her dislike for "the lesbians" in front of other teams. Carol and Brandy aren't the most likeable people around (I might not care much for them in real life based on how they were in the game, but it's not because of their status of being "the lesbians") but there's no need to be openly hated because of their orientation by Caite and never have their names used until tonight's episode. Why doesn't she use labels for other teams besides Carol/Brandy?

I pretty much agree that Brandy & C were made to look like the team who initiated the insult game. For me, "the Lesbians" became pretty much an un-pejorative descriptive term, like "the cowboys" or (in other seasons, "the gay guys"). It seems that everyone gets a label, and I just bet that Brent & C weren’t the only team that referred to Brandy and C as Lesbians. But Brandy wasn't just tossing off an offhand insult, she seemed to want to turn the knife. And her insulting imitation of Brent was definitely mean, and an insult. Props to her for originality, however.

Editing. Maybe the editors are the real bigots. But maybe we’re the bigots for thinking of that term as an insulting description?

Caite is also a bigot. She meant to insult. And in her naivety she may have meant it as an ultimate putdown. But I’d like to know how Brandy and C felt about being called lesbians. I mean, surely they resented the intent behind Caite’s insult, but they advertised themselves as lesbians, they were out, and even Phil referred to them as lesbians in the beginning (right? or did I imagine that?). I never saw any evidence that they resented the term per se. Maybe they looked on it as a badge of honor, or at least as a “yeah, we’re gay, so what?” type of thing.

It was pretty obvious that the “anyone one but us” philosophy motivated the detectives to play up Brent &C's aversion to Brandy&C rather than “elimination of the strong threat” philosophy. So Brandy and C’s real mistake was to become in the eyes of the other teams a target by unnecessarily insulting another team, just because they could. I think it made Brandy and C feel superior. Bad strategy caused them to be the target of the other teams, and when the time came, they paid for their hubris. They are to blame for their being U-turned, and Brandy should just look in a mirror if she wants to see someone who is less smart than Caite. A low bar indeed, but one which she managed to fall below.

Accidental Swoop. And not a subtle jibe to the lesbians. A pure knuckle dragging accident.

"RE: TAR 16, Episode 9 - East Coast Spoiler Thread"
Posted by samboohoo on 04-12-10 at 02:12 PM
At first I thought the same thing about the term. But as the season went by, I seemed to noticed Caite and Brent never referred to them as anything but, and the tone in which she used it also became more hateful and more disturbing. I think last night was the first time it seemed to me like she really didn't like them because of it.

Having said all of that and, only having the benefit of the edited version of the show, I think the feud between the two teams seemed to have really started in the beginning with Brandy and Carol. They didn't seem to realize who Caite was until Dan or Jordan told them. They latched on to that and never let it go. I will also agree with what Pepe says elsewhere about Caite exposing herself in the first place.

I find fault with both teams.

With respect to the U-Turn, I have no doubt Carol & Brandy would have used it on Brent & Caite, and the reason would not have been "because they are strong racers." While Mike & Louis and Jet & Cord have won multiple legs, they have made huge mistakes. Brandy & Carol haven't. One could argue that while Carol & Brandy haven't won legs, they were still a very strong team. And I wouldn't fault anyone for taking the opportunity to eliminate someone they just don't want to be around.

Yep, it was personal between Brent/Caite and Carol/Brandy, just like it was earlier in the race between Louie/Michael and Joe/Heidi. There was no strategy involved in either case (if there were, Jet and Cord would've been U-turned twice).

I don't see any of the four teams involved with U-turns as contenders to win the race, so in the long run the U-turn impact was relatively small. All it did was alter the elimination sequence of non-winning teams. And I thought the personal rivalries made things more interesting in what has been a very poor season overall.

This has to be editing to the max. Take a look at the Elimination Station video of Brandy and Carol. That anger didn't come out of nowhere. The two teams definitely had it out for each other.

Kudos to the cops for recognizing the conflict and using it to their advantage.

When? Even tonight when they showed flashbacks it was only Louie & Michael telling Brent & Caite that they said something. Not a single filmed shot of Carol & Brandy saying anything about Brent & Caite until after they were U-Turned and there is some understandable anger.

I mean I wouldn't be surprised in the first day of seeing people that some comments got made by several teams that she is the "Miss Such As" of pageant contestants. After all, who didn't see the youtube of that incident.

Not sure why Carol and Brandy got cast as the only mean people that ever said anything about her.

ETA: I wonder if it is that Carol and Brandy don't seem like the type to be all fake nice to her just for the sake of making Caite feel good about herself. Probably because Carol and Brandy save all their taking care of high maintenance women energy for each other. I like them, but I can't see them having much ego soothing left over for other racers once they have taken care of each other.
