"I feel lame for being this angry over this....."

Okay, it seriously sucks that I have now become one of "those people" who rant on and on about some "injustice" online to a board where no one will ever be able to do anything about it. But, why the hell not.

Tonight's show pissed me off to no end. I love comedy. I've been watching stand up since I can remember. Dave was so funny and he was ORIGINAL. Dat Phan was like a rabid dog. He scared me to death. I've never seen someone use that much energy and feel scared instead of laughing out loud. He was Cujo, but less funny.

I don't know what's more wrong: The audience, any majority at all, thought Dat was Phunnier (ha! get it? Yeah, whatever,) than Dave...or that you have an Asian man who has the WORST Asian accent I've ever heard. Maybe it's part of his act (I hope), or maybe he's just not that funny. I could barely understand anything he said when he was speaking in that stupid accent...I had to turn on Closed Captioning....and even that looked like the person who typed it was having an epileptic seizure. Then he did the same jokes, that's kind of okay but *yawn*. If they were that good in the first place, yay!

70% of the people there thought Dat was funnier than Dave. How amazingly sad that is.....I feel like I'm taking care of a kid with down syndrome it's so farkin' sad.

I really hope someone goes to Dave and offers him a writing job or something, he's going to make it. I hope Dat gets funnier, but seriously doubt it. And he's never going to make it far with his dumb outlook on what being a comedian is or even a human being (an interesting one anyway). At least I hope we as Americans are not completely 70% mentally retarded.

HAH!

Couldn't agree more.

Someone on the side of the light winning this show? Make the world a better place!? Give me a friggin break chart-boy.

As far as I'm concerned, devils are funnier than angels...

I kinda blame Dave tho, he didnt seem like he really TRIED to win. Which is hilarious since he's been acting that way since the start! Who would YOU vote for: someone who's begging or someone who says I dont give a damn. I'd do the latter. 70% of people didnt.

Exactly!

I'm not saying the guy doesn't have great intentions, but it sounded like he was running for a political office rather than BEING FUNNY, which is what the show is about. I understand him wanting to get to know cultures and stuff, but that's not what the show is about! He wasn't funny.

I do agree that maybe Dave went in thinking he was a shoe in and being the guy he is, wanted to save his "best material" or even "better material" for later on so it wouldn't get tired. Although, he's a quick thinker and he's thinking up new jokes all the time. But he was obviously surprised and might be kicking himself a little bit, but I doubt it. He still should have won no matter what. And I seriously doubt he's questioning himself. He's probably like me and questioning 70% of that loser audience and hopefully questioning humanity.

I think Dave's going to be fine no matter what, and that Dat is going to sleeping under a desk for awhile. Just might be a nicer desk.......with drawers or something............and possibly a chair mat.

That's what makes me feel better about last night. I know Dave has now been discovered and he will make it in the comedy business. I look forward to seeing more of him in the future.

I really hope someone goes to Dave and offers him a writing job or something, he's going to make it.

I noticed the TV editors showed Vos plugging Dave for a writing job, also. I don't think Dave is very funny, but someone should indeed hire him if they think he is funny.

or that you
>have an Asian man who
>has the WORST Asian accent
>I've ever heard.

I'm Asian American and I thought his accent was great. I've heard Vietnamese people before and they sound just like that. Also, it made me laugh. But he could have done more than just make fun of his parents. Oh well.

Well, that could have shown us if the guy were truly funny, or just limited to a tiny subset of material. I can't speak for all of the folks who disliked last night's result, but I know that's what bothers me most about the guy. Once you get past the first joke, what does he have? I don't know, because he hasn't gone there yet.

I'm still waiting for some of the physical, kung-fu based humor that we know Dat has in his "arsenal" (such as it is), but that he is apparently holding back for the finals.

We've been shown Dat working out with the martial arts routine, so I'm expecting we're going to see it at SOME point in the future. Leading-in by producers? One never knows...

I think that when we are critical of Dat's "small inventory" of jokes we should remember that Dave's been doing this for nine years while I could be wrong, but I always got the impression that Dat has only been at this a year or two.

Given the fact that Dave's been at this 9 years (or 4-5 times longer than Dat) can it really be a surprise that he has more jokes than Dat? ...I don't think Dave is throwing out his material every year and starting over, so I'd expect that he first told some of those great jokes his fans like upwards of 9 years ago and has been using them since.

There's nothing wrong with that, but to note Dat's apparent smaller joke stockpile without also noting that Dave's been around much longer doesn't seem like the best measurement of pure talent to me -- it's the same way that I don't think getting 3,000 hits in baseball means you were better than some other guy who only got 2,000 hits but played 7-8 years fewer. Some stats measure longevity, not talent.

Totally agree, Webby, and it should be noted that comics never "throw away the material and start over".

Milton Berle would write down every joke he heard (and liked, I assume) or thought of. He reportedly (in the days before computers) had filed away over ONE MILLION jokes in his lifetime, and he never threw any of them away.

Truth be told, there are really very few truly original jokes out there, and themes can have variants and variants of those to correspond to the mood of the times.

While I agree that quantity does not always equate to quality, I disagree that complaining about Dat's small jokepile is not an appropriate measurement. A number of the comics have referenced their time in the house while doing their routines, which shows that they are working on keeping their acts current. Rather than a comparison to the longevity records in sports, I think of it more in terms of an update in equipment. For example, a tennis player switches from a wood racket to an alumiminum one, or a golfer updates his clubs. You can't rely on the same equipment game in, game out or it will wear out quickly at that level.

Even if Dat's only been at this a year or two, he should still have more than 10 minutes of "A" material at his disposal. For example, he could have updated his act to break the news to his parents that he was moving in with all of these other comics, or compared living in the house with living under a desk.

Like I said before, when he shows me something new, I re-evaluate. But since I've seen way too many one-note comics come and go who never add to their repetoire, until then I just plan to yawn and place him in the "so what?" category.

You hit it on the head! Dat is a one trick pony. I don't care how long he has been doing comedy. If he had a sense of humor he would have more material. Why? Because life is funny. That is what comics do, they make fun of life. They each (should) have their own take on the world around them based on their personality, but comedy is about observations of life-skewed, cynical, wacky, whatever. Apparently Dat has been sleepwalking through his own life. Are we seriously to believe the only thing he thinks is funny is being Asian?

George Lopez does some Chicano accent, but his stuff is about the culture, the stereotypes, Chicano compared to white or black. Dat doesn't do the his material because he is too new too have anything better. He doesn't do it because he thinks it is that funny. He does the material he does because he thinks that is all anybody else would think is funny for him to do. The kid keeps loads of charts, but he has missed the boat. Dat is smart, in some respects. His charts tell him that this is what main-stream America thnks is funny coming from him. How insulting. Let's hear about living under a desk. Was that an upgrade from a cardboard box? Maybe he couldn't get a box in California since they all recycle evrything there. Perhaps he developed his animosity toward chairs while living under the desk. Tell us something funny Dat!

He may be workman-like, but he isn't funny. Dat reminds me of an engineering student I knew who took a painting class and was offended when the professor announced that no matter how hard some people work, they will only do "C" level paintings. The point the engineer missed, and I think some others are missing in this case, is that TALENT is an important ingriedient. In fact, it is essential. Hard work enhances but cannot substitute for talent.

Dat certainly belongs in show business. With his charts, attention to detail and ability to self-promote, he would be an excellent manager/agent for a real comic.

this is a total injustice and just goes to show how stupid the people that are being plopped down in front of this to judge really are.

dat phan: unfunniest comic ever.

in another rant, however, i'd like to say that i think it's wrong they invited "veteran" comics. they should be inviting people who have -never- done this before EVER.

Don't feel lame! I was spitting mad after last night's show. I can't believe Dave is GONE! How....surprising! I don't know what else to say except that my brow was furled and I had this "HUH?" look on my face during all of Dat's routine....

where did they find that audience?

omg!! i was one on those with my mouth wide open!! 70% vote for dat?? i don't think so!! i have read that dat was a doorman for the hollywood improv..could that be why he got the vote? it certainly wasn't because he was the best comic!!

Oh thank God! I thought I was the only one who felt angry even the next day. I finally got a grip and remembered I have a real life, but still...

Like you I was disgusted with the audience. Tthe audience frightened me more than Dat fightened you. These people vote in actual elections, drive cars and breed! Be afraid, be very afraid.

I think the only thing that would have given Dat a bigger percentage of the vote is if he had done some "humor" involving bodily functions (in a lousy Asian accent , of course!). That kind of think is very big with 10 year olds.
