"Mirna -- blech"

Watching ep 1, I was surprised at how much this harpy annoyed me right out of the gate.

Here we are - how many years later? - and every time she opens her mouth I STILL want to smack her. The WHINING!!!

Worst I think are the pathetic attempts to speak Spanish - made even more ridiculous when you hear Danny & Oswald actually speaking the language in the next car.

And here's a clue -- speaking English with a phony accent will not make Spanish-speaking people understand you more.

Yes, Charla was doing this too, and I know others have done it, but somehow when Mirna does it....urgh.

I can't believe this woman made it through law school.

Fingers crossed for a quick elimination.

And here's a clue -- speaking English with a phony accent will not make Spanish-speaking people understand you more.

I think what makes it worse here is that she appears to be using a Russian accent. She actually said "vith" instead of "with".

It makes me laugh so. hard. that she was actually *on* TAR before and didn't figure out that she should improve her standard driving skills.

I also think it was quite rude of her to snort derisively when Charla said they'd have to win a foot race. Way to encourage your partner, there.

Nevertheless, there are other teams that I either hate more or am more ambivalent about, so I don't want Charla and Mirna gone right away.

Being that Mirna and Charla are of Armenian descent, that could be why her "accent" came out the way it did.

But it's still phony even so.

Armenian, huh? That's one of those languages that doesn't have a family. So not Slavic after all, though Armenia was once in the USSR (I think).

Charla and Mirna were born in Syria (one month apart) and came to this country as children with their families.

I still like Charla, silly as the wheelies seem it shows she is at least trying to improve her game play.

Mirna! Nothing! It is like she never was on the first race. With Charla's small size there are things that Mirna must step up to do, and it does not look like she is ready.

Okay. I see now. I didn't understand before, but now I completely understand.

The woman turned into a shrieking harridan with that local. There are just so many possible alternate reactions to a situation like that. Hers was clearly the worst choice.

What kind of a lawyer is she? Can you see her as a trial lawyer? Her objections must be colourful.

i am soooooooooo mad that amber & rob just now was last and mirna & smirna made it ahead of them with help. i would not use mirna as a lawyer any more that i would have charla be my real estate agent. they are both ignorant. can't wait for them to finally come in last place. since of listening to the "WHINNING" mirna. probably why both of them are single.

Wow. So much more to bug me about Mirna this week:

At the Detour, they were carrying a big pole and a box of wooden arrows up some stairs, and she kept harping at Charla to get moving, like that's going to help.

She claims to be compensating for her partner more than anyone else: "I do more than any one single person has had to do ever in the Race."

To paraphrase from The Ref:

You know what I'm going to get you next Christmas, Mirna? A big wooden cross, so that every time you feel unappreciated for your sacrifices, you can climb on up and nail yourself to it.

Mirna claimed to be a Christian during TAR5 when they partnered ever-so-briefly with Brandon & Nicole. Of course, 2 episodes later, she was calling Christie a "#####", so Mirna's ethics are presumably flexible.

I believe that the man on Charla's shirt this week was her husband. It said "I miss you" and had some man's picture much like the Cho brother's shirts. It wasn't someone I recognized as a previous racer so I assumed it was hubby.

I really have to wonder how she acts in court when the case comes under pressure? Does she blame her client? Yell at the judge?

Does anyone know what type of law she practices? I assume something like real-estate law where she spends most of her time just doing paperwork.

They dislike I feel for this team is insane I am almost always in the spoiler section but felt the need to bash.. I have a physical reaction to this team and it's not a good one. The two of them make me cirnge. I hate the way they talk to people. I hate they way they talk to each other. I thought they would have realized after the first time they were on the show I gave them the benefit of the doubt saying once they realize what they appeared like they would probably feel horrible but they are the same. The talking in an accent to people drives me up the wall .. I mean it really is the rudest thing I have ever seen/heard. It is so rude.

Anyway I think I am done for now but I reserve the right to come back into the forum and bash some more.

Otherwise, I agree with your assessment of Myrna and Charla. They're not that bad.

There have been teams that have been a lot more abrasive than the two of them. And I can not see how anybody would appreciate Eric + Danielle more than any other team - including Myrna and Charla - at this point.

"RE: Mirna -- blech"
Posted by ladybugen on 03-19-07 at 09:12 AM
Her "instant accent" when she is talking to locals grates on me too. As if that makes her more understandable?!?

She (and another team) were speaking Spanish to some of the locals. Did they not realize they were out of South America? I mean, I know they had stayed there for a while, but really, you're in Africa! The official language of Mozambique is Portuguese.

"RE: Mirna -- blech"
Posted by CattyChat on 03-19-07 at 09:41 AM
I wish one of the locals would tear into Mirna for her mocking of them by immitating their accents. That is basically what she is doing in each country, is slightly changing her accent to parrot the locals' broken English. IT IS A DISGRACE and nothing irritates me more than people who perpetuate the ignorant American traveler stereotype.

The only reason these two are still in the race is because they bully the locals into helping them. If they weren't women, they would probably be thrown in jail. They go into their high-pitched, obnoxiously loud & mocking accents and grab the poor local and force them to go with them to "help" them find & do their next task.

Mirna is a disgrace to Americans, women and shockingly even lawyers; and Charla is a disgrace to little people and all other people with disabilities or challenges. Just once I want to see a local fight back, but I think locals are afraid that these two are so crazy, who knows what they might do.

Also, I bet $100 the next NEL is going to be on a leg when Mearna and Schmearna come in last. Hopefully I'll be in Europe before that happens and won't have to suffer through listening to these two. Most irritating racers ever (yes, even worse than Flo and Jonathan/Victoria )

>>slightly changing her accent<<

Most confusing to me: The Italian accent & use of the word 'grazie' in Africa. (I think it was Mirna who said 'grazie,' but I know Charla was speaking like Fr. Guido Sarducci) Wha?

2nd most confusing: a few weeks ago, Charla was talking like a Yiddishemama while somewhere in South America. Oy vey.

>>Most irritating racers ever (yes, even worse than Flo and Jonathan/Victoria)<<

You've given me the courage to admit that I've been thinking I'd rather see J/V than these two. I'm surprised I feel that way, but there you have it.

"!"
Posted by JD8 on 03-19-07 at 05:10 PM
I would much rather see Johnathan and Victoria.. I mean they were entertaining it was hard to watch. But similar the way looking at a car accident is hard you know you shouldn't but you will. You can't help it. They were scary entertaining

M/C are just annoying rude, and they do fit that american traveller stereotype with the accent - Everytime I think of it my eye physically twitches.

Rapido! Rapido! they say this to every cab driver in every country they did it last time. And it makes me ill.

"RE: !"
Posted by bostonrobfan on 03-20-07 at 11:18 PM
I agree. J/V were annoying but entertaining. Mirna is annoying, grating, and a big pain in the rear!

"RE: Mirna -- blech"
Posted by mysticwolf on 03-19-07 at 06:14 PM
I have a bit of an accent and, when I'm in other English speaking countries where their accent is essentially a stronger version of mine, I find mine getting stronger. I'm not mocking them, it's totally unconscious on my part. But, that wouldn't explain what M/C are doing.

However, I don't find myself in a non-English speaking country speaking English using the accents and inflections of the non-native English speakers. I.E., I don't speak English with an Italian accent when I'm in Italy. There's not much room for forgiveness when that happens, as it seems to with M/C.

And, if I'm going to speak in a foreign language I try to use the local language, not a mish-mash of whatever foreign language words I know. If confronted with someone I need to commnicate with where neither of us speaks the other's language I may try to find common ground in a third, however. Again, that doesn't seem to be what M/C are trying to accomplish.

We've actually wondered if M/C are laboring under the misconception that they (or the rest of the world) are fluent in Esperanto.

There's a whole list of reasons I dislike this team more than just about anybody else, but their accents have been really low on the list. I guess I should pay more attention. It could rise higher when I think about it.

I totally understand what you are saying, Mystic, and I can safely say that I know you treat people (and animals) with respect and do not act abnoxious, loud and abrasive. I'd also say what you are talking about and what MC do are two totally different things.

When I travel, I too try to speak in the language of the country I am in to the best of my ability and if it's a language I am not at all a little bit fluent in (Czech), I at least get a few key phrases down, especially the phrase "Do you speak English?" and if they respond yes, I speak in clear English.

When I am in countries where I know a decent amount of the language (Italy/France) my Italian and French accent strengthens, because I am hearing it all around me. This is what I think you are talking about and it is in no way a mocking thing, it is more of listening and adapting to the culture and you are respecting them by trying to speak THEIR language as best as you can.

I do not think Mirna & Charla are doing this "subconcious" accent changing. I have noticed it as the race has gone on that their "broken English" changes accents slightly. In watching one of the extra videos on the TAR Web site, it made it 100% clear that they are parroting the locals NOT speaking their language, but speaking a broken English immitating the locals' speech.

There is a clip where Mirna "abducted" a Mozambique local to guide them to their destination. The 3 of them are crammed in the backseat of the pickup truck. This man was speaking broken English and there you can hear that Mirna changes her accent and starts speaking the SAME broken English as he was doing. He even asks them "Where are you from?" To which Mirna responds "America." He looks a little surprised. Mirna then goes into this broken English speech how they will hide him in their bag & take him to America . . . how he should take a "vacation" from work to take them where they need to go . . . he should tell people he took two ladies to ??? or just keep it a secret. All the while she is immitating this poor gentleman's broken English and accent.

That was really the last straw for me, as it was 100% obvious that is what she is doing. To me, it insults their intelligence and it is mocking and an embarassment to fellow American tourists. I just have very little tolerance for rudeness & ignorance and these two are the queens of rude & ignorance.

Love your Spring Sig, Mystic

Absolutely agree. They are queen beyotches of the highest order. I just haven't paid that much attention to their accent changes as the show's been aired. There's just been too much other carp they do that was more obvious to me.

And I haven't looked at any of the extra videos. If I did, I certainly wouldn't be looking at any of them. It's bad enough they're still on my tv once a week. I don't want to infect my p.c., too.

They have ruined this season for me. I am not even bothering to watch the show live anymore. I am recording it and then I FF when I watch the ep. Mirna and Charla have made me realize there is not one other couple that has been on TAR in all the seasons that I would have disliked seeing more. And that is pretty bad. Because there have been alot of bad pairs on this show. But Mirna and Charla do not have one redeeming quality. They are not entertaining or even fun to hate. They just grate on my nerves. Why did they ever invite them on the All Stars show? Did they bully TPTB and wear them down too?

I think I need to go to a happy place and calm down.

Posted by MajorImpact on 04-01-07 at 09:24 PM
None of are experts on EVERYTHING, but it still amazes me how a person who's booksmart enough to become a lawyer could be so incredibly dense in other areas. In tonight's 2 hour episode when they got to the piano tuning task and watched the demonstration, Mirna said something about cleaning off the piano wire, TWICE.

WTF?!? Why would dusting it off a little bit suddenly bring it in tune? Then after she made an adjustment to it and it was still horribly out of tune she said it sounded good, and in the end they ended up giving up because they were so lost. Nice going, Dustin had it figured out in less than a minute.

Then at the end when Charla is trying to lead the horse Mirna tries to get its attention by telling it that she had sausage? Sure didn't sound like she was joking. 1. She didn't have sausage. 2. Horses aren't carnivorous. 3. Kudos to the editing team at CBS for consistently making her look like a nut.

What cracked me up was Charla's responses to Mirna after the Polish cabbie incident. Mirna is yelling at her about not finding the clue.

"What are you doing back there?!!!"

"I'm doing nothing," in a deadpan voice.

Then Mirna yells out, "Am I supossed to do everything?"

Charla replies, "No, you're just supossed to yell at me."

Oh..My..Gawd.. Could that woman be ANY MORE ANNOYING??? I kept hoping that 1) the Polish guys she was whining to would just drive them off a cliff somewhere or 2) the horse would trample her dumba** just to shut her the hell up!! I cannot take that stoopid weird accent she comes up with in these foreign countries either. In one word.... VOMIT!
Please get her off my TV screen because I'm about to break the dang thing into a million pieces!!

Actually, they have TWO stoopid weird accents. In Latin countries, they speak with a bad Hispanic accent with an "O" on the end of everything. In Germanic type countries like Poland, they speak in a strange Swedish accent.

And another thing. WHAT in the WORLD was she yammering on about at Auschwitz? Something about their relatives being exterminated by the "Turks"??? I mean, COME ON.... Again with the barf bag - You'd think the dumba** would just shut her piehole for once and LOOK like she has a freakin' clue!!
Impossible??

As much as they get on my nerves, there was an Armenian holocost around 1915 or such....I don't think she said anything wrong at all.

Try a google search for Armenian Genocide.

I agree. That was one of the few times that Mirna made sense.

The problem I have here is while what happened to their past Armenian relatives were a set of horrible events, with the Turks planning to wipe out as many people as possible - it was not the systematic, industrial complex that the Nazis set up.

In that sense she brushed over how far the Nazis and other people who agree with them about racial purity will go to kill those they hate. She was in a way belittling the death camps.

Both gay teams related directly between their lifestyle and that they would be in those same camps if they had been born earlier - they connected themselves directly to the inmates of the death camps.

U&J did not spend the entire time talking about slavery, but rather how much injustice man can inflict on their fellow man. They did not connect to the inmates, but they did connect to the mental states that allowed the death camps to operate.

S&M came across to me as a pair of children, claiming their holocaust was as big and important on the world stage as the Nazi's engineered one. They were trying to avoid the import of the location to so many other people out there.

Thank you for this Earl -- I felt that too, but thought maybe I let my general disgust with them color my reaction.

It did feel like a sick one-upmanship.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who felt that way!

I don't know... I'd have to watch the scene again, but I initially had the sense that Mirna was commiserating with the victims of Auschwitz by talking about how she can relate with the feeling of your ancestry being part of a genocide.

The thing is, while the Holocaust should never, ever, be forgotten or downsized in magnitude, a lot of people seem to forget the Armenian genocide ever happened.

Plenty of Western scholars view this as the first genocide of the 20th century and a campaign of state-sponsored ethnic cleansing and mass extermination. For example, some Western sources point to the sheer scale of the death toll as evidence for a systematic, organized plan to eliminate the Armenians. The event is also said to be the second-most studied case of genocide, and often draws comparison with the Holocaust. (Thanks, Wiki)

Second-most studied case of genocide? Really? As a history buff while growing up and a field of study during my university years, I can only recall studying the Armenian genocide once over the years, while the Holocaust has been brought up countless number of times.

I agree, Pepe. As much as I dislike Mirna the Harpy, I don't think that she was trying to "one up" the Holocaust when she mentioned the Armenian genocide. As some of the comments from our own community make clear, the Armenian genocide is often forgotten and overlooked. I thought Mirna provided context about humanity's inhumanity. I just don't see how it is any different for her to say "this place resonates with me because of my family's experiences" than for Oswald to say "this place resonate with me because of my experiences living under and oppressive government." They both applied their own experiences and knowledge to make visiting the concentration camp especially relevant to their own lives instead of "something that just happened in the past."

Pssst. Don't tell any of this part of the thread to the Turks. They still officially deny having anything to do with the Armenian genocide. That's one of several reasons why Turkey will never join the European Union.

FTR, I wasn't bothered by C&M's reaction.

So Mirna figures by repeating "my friend" to the cabby she can 'undo' the ugliness of everything else she said to him?

When no one would help them, I figured that their reputation had preceeded them to Poland. Mirna had it coming!

I was wondering which accent they'd assume, the hispanic one or the eastern european one, in Malaysia. Seems they went for the KOO-KEYS sort of eastern european one. Or is this one especially for the people of Malaysia??? It's hard to understand, that's for sure!!
Once again, Mirna shows her a** when she tells those kids, "STAY IN SCHOOL! BE GOOD! DON'T USE DRUGS!" blech! Whatever, Mirna...

I can not express the level of irritation she caused
me by repeating "cookies" ad nauseum. Her voice is like nails on
a chalkboard. I don't think I'll ever be able to eat another
cookie without grinding my teeth. Tnanks for that.

Taken from realitytvworld recap:
........Realizing how far along it was in the competition and hoping to take advantage of his feelings towards the beauty queens, Mirna attempted to strike a deal with Eric. "We have been screwed over one too many times by the bubbly, giggly girls," she told Eric...............................

Just HOW have the BQ's 'screwed' over the cousins? I just don't get it.
So when the cousins and BQ's were doing the intersection together, I guess they were all faking the "cooperation", huh?
Mirna is very 2-faced, IMO.

She is just an amazing drama queen. And quite evil. She was literally trying to steal the BBQ's plane tickets. So rude! I already posted in the "Cheaters" thread that they are so awful, they are making me start to miss the Weavers!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now THAT's saying ALOT!

Not that I have an opinion one way or another ;)

I can't believe I'm saying this but I am currently travelling and doesn't have access to viewing TAR (thank God for this site!) but here we go... I'd rather suffer watching the Schmirnas rather than no TAR at all. Waaahhh!!!

Thinking back on this season and all the examples we have of how vile Mirna is (her fake accent, the broken english, the hypocrisy, etc), what absolutely bothers me the most is that she hasn't changed.

We saw the Guidos as a kinder, gentler team. Even Romber was less manipulative than his previous season. Yet Mirna is just as annoying as she was on her first season. How can she live in such a bubble that she doesn't comprehend these undesireable characteristics? If I were a contestant, I would watch the show and still be on message boards (at least lurking/reading, if not allowed to post) in large part to see how people reacted to me. Then, assuming of course that negative things were pointed out, I would work on correcting those parts of my character.

Now maybe she's doing that this time around and we won't have the opportunity to see the resulting change, but why didn't she do it the first time? I honestly cannot understand this.

"Editing"
Posted by curveball on 04-17-07 at 03:14 PM
the show is better with a villian. Every year someone is edited to be the villian. Guidos were nicer this time around because (a) they were older and wiser - maybe taking action based on their last race and the negative publicity, and (b) the Guidos didn't need to be the villian.

now I acknowledge that c/m don't need any editing to be the villian (of course I base this on my interpretation of the show AFTER it has been edited) because they seem like nasty people, however I am quite sure that if they were to ever do/say something pleasant - it wouldn't make it on the show.

I think that c/m read the posts and think that "people just don't understand", which may or may not be fair (aka Jeri's breakdown on Survivor All Star Finale)

Don't get me wrong, I hate them. I root for them to lose. But ultimately I hope they make it to the finals, and Myrna stops right before the footrace to the finish to put on her makeup, and Charla puts on her "too hot to handle" shirt, and someone (anyone) ends up passing them in the race to the finish - because Charla cannot run as fast as taller people.

As a sidebar - I am TIRED of hearing how people underestimate her because of her size, and that she can do anything. She can't do everything. She can't drive, she can't run fast, and she couldn't have reached that clue Eric found ABOVE THE DOOR.

First, none of the racers - I repeat none of the racers show signs that they have improved as much as I would expect a second time around player to be.

But I was shocked to hear Mirna say that she still could not drive stick-shift, and worse try to blame Charla for not being able to!

As for Charla I loved her in her first race, but like you say all this whining has really turned me off her.

Yikes I think Charla DO need Mirna's harping so she can get something done. Being left on her own, all she can do is whine whine whine.
