LAST EDITED ON 03-02-05 AT 08:19 AM (EST)

First up.

Sings 'You Don't Know My Name'

Sorry, missed the song (started late)

The judges weren't impressed.

eta song title

"an Alicia Keys song"

don't know which.

I thought it was ok, i still like her.

I still like Aloha and will vote for her tonight. It's pretty hard to be an R&B diva in AI because the selection of 'familiar' R&B songs is pretty small and they usually get ripped a new one for singing other popular R&B-ish folks like Mariah/Whitney/etc. I would love to hear her sing something jazzy or more soulful. I think she's too stuck in a 21st century R&B diva rut. She's better than that.

Got blog?

"Lindsay Cardinale"

LAST EDITED ON 03-02-05 AT 08:20 AM (EST)

Sings 'You're All I Think About These Days' (my best guess)

Song title according to AI webpage - "I Try To Think About Elvis'

Randy didn't think it was her best effort, Paula liked her voice but not the song, Simon doesn't think she's making an impression.

Simon can't remember her songs. A bad omen

Seahorse, didn't see your thread and didn't mean to step on your toes. I was just trying to help get things started.

No problem.

"Jessica Sierra"

LAST EDITED ON 03-02-05 AT 08:20 AM (EST)

Sings a country song (once I figure out the song titles, I'll come back and edit)

Song title: A Broken Wing

Very smoky voice. Randy says she's returned and is good. Paula likes that she did her own version of the song and did a great job. Simon says best female vocal performance has heard.

"RE: Jessica Sierra"

The said it was unique but it sounded like the the original to me.

"What's up with the sound?"

I hate it when we can't here the singers over the band. It was like that last season alot too.

Could barely hear Lindsey.

in there - its like a nightclub.

Its so loud, he's not sure if Amanda was in tune the whole time.

SEE?

"mikalah"

singing the Billy holliday "god bless the child thats got his own"

"RE: mikalah"
Posted by Angelfood on 03-01-05 at 08:23 PM
she did much better singing a serious song - and couldn't hear her nasal-ness.

Randy loved it.
paula too.
Simon - a joy to watch & listen to. Proud of her for taking a risk. u weren't annoying in the slightest - because you're not talking!

Bwahaha. But he's right - she's not talking while shes singing.

"Mikayla Gordon"
Posted by kathliam on 03-01-05 at 08:23 PM
This girl cracks me up. 'I want to be famous because I can't cook, can't clean, and can't walk my own dog'.

Sings "God Bless The Child". Contesant #4

This is the best I've ever heard her sing. Has she sung a ballad before? It's a little low for her register but she's going a good job.

Randy amazed she would attempt a song like that. Paula says she nailed it and showed versatility. Simon says was a joy to watch and listen to, he's proud she took a risk and showed her talent.

Seahorse - go next, then me, then Kath. But I like how we each catch different things!

I am fairly certain that she did a ballad at some point in Hollywood, which is what made me like her voice. If it wasn't a ballad, it was something fairly slow-tempo.

All the Mikalah-haters had better recognize that the girl has the chops and she's probably not going anywhere this week (that performance got my vote)! Excellent (and she looked cute, too)!

But her makeup. Yee gods! Whoever does it should be making up drag queens for a living.

The girl looks perpetually surprised. Or like she's wearing a kabuki mask.

I can't agree more with your observation! I thought she was wonderful. If she keeps her mouth shut after she sings.... she will make it to the top twelve.

Just one more week Mikalah! You can keep quiet long enough to stay in the game!

I am not a Mikala fan but she definately has some smart people around her. If she was like this all the time and sang like that all the time - she'd be one of my favs.

"RE: Mikayla Gordon"
Posted by Fishercat on 03-01-05 at 11:30 PM
Mostly because I have selective deafness (>_>) and I expected her to be mediocre, I couldn't understand a single word she was singing. Her voice sounded good...but even if I knew every song on earth, I couldn't identify that one.

Thank you! I'm glad someone else couldn't understand her. It's called enunciation--try it sometime.

just blah.

sorry, seahorse go next, then kath.

Simon said that there's a fine line between Star and Hotel singer, and she's the latter. I think she was misty-eyed.

you're far more kind than I am! *spew*

That was wretched! I don't remember if I wanted her gone last week or not (I think I picked Celena & Sarah as my bottom 2), but tonight certianly sealed the deal. Absolutely dreadful.

She is cute, though.

ugh! etr sig again!

"RE: celena"

But you are right, she was just blah. She could have picked up the tempo a little, or shown some personality, but she was just kinda there.

maybe seahorse isn't around - sorry. Kath pls go next.

DH says she butchered it - paul mccartney's My Love. by wings.

lots of whoa whoa whoas.

"RE: nadia"
Posted by kathliam on 03-01-05 at 08:34 PM
Nadia -- Contestant #6

"My Love". Tempo way too slow, too many 'woh, wohs'. She's got the voice but I'm not sure she can sing ballads.

The judges aren't encouraging but know she has the potential.

"RE: nadia"
Posted by Angelfood on 03-01-05 at 08:35 PM
they still like her.

but given the competition, wouldn't you?

"RE: nadia"

Simon wasn't happy with the song at all.

"Amanda Avila"
Posted by seahorse on 03-01-05 at 08:37 PM
Sings Turn the Beat Around, I can't believe they haven't retired that song yet. It was sang several times last season.

"RE: Amanda Avila"
Posted by seahorse on 03-01-05 at 08:39 PM
The judges liked it, but Simon said it was the usual Nightclub performance. Very loud.

"RE: Amanda Avila"
Posted by kathliam on 03-01-05 at 08:40 PM
I think the judges have a hard time hearing over the band, hence Simon's comments last night about how his opinion changed watching the playbacks.

"Amanda Avila"

Contestant #7

"Turn The Beat Around" - Miami Sound Machine?

Them's some fast lyrics and she's handling them! She's actually showing some personality tonight. Good song choice for her voice.

Randy says she showed range, better than last week. Paula says she raised her game, picked the right song, comfortable on stage. Simon says agrees with Randy and Paula and overall a great performance.

"MSM"
Posted by Angelfood on 03-01-05 at 08:40 PM
Oh yeah,

dumb to try a Gloria estefan song! Can't believe the judges didn't blast it. Guess they couldn't hear.

DH says Atrocious!!! LOL!

(sorry about my confusing idea - scrap it! I'll think of something better later. Maybe one person start them. One do judges comments. I dunno. It doesn't matter.)

I didn't think it was confusing. Maybe we can one person do the play the play and the rest of us can do color commentary.

ETA: Seahorse is a genius at knowing the songs and original performers. Me? not so much. (as you can tell from my first couple of posts)

I'm not familiar with the song. She reminds me of L'il Kim somehow.

Song title - "Hit 'Em Up Style"

Randy says it wasn't very good. Paula says it was disconnected. Simon says she looks frightened when she sings, not experienced enough for this competition.

eta song title

other boards call her Janay-Bot. very robotic.

Poor thing.

"Janay Castine"

The judges did not like her performance evn though it was upbeat.

"RE: Janay Castine"
Posted by singer on 03-02-05 at 10:09 AM
She needs to cover her stomach. I got the impression that she was trying to dress old and sing like an old woman, and she clearly does not have that experience.

She needs to pick different music (she has a mature sound, so she could sing some old blues standards like "Who's Lovin' You" beautifully).

She would do well to dress in wool knits and boots, maybe all black or earthtones, and pull her hair out of her face so that we can see her beautiful bone structure. She's too young to be a vamp, but she has voice that is beautiful enough that she could tackle some really nice pieces that would allow her to stylise her songs better.

"a rock song?"

influence from Constantine??

Simons says like a rock cover band, looked stiff & uncomfortable. disappointing, cuz they like her.

"Carrie Underwood"
Posted by seahorse on 03-01-05 at 08:48 PM
Sings Piece of My Heart - by Janet Joplin. The judges are not too happy with her.

"Carrie Underwood"
Posted by kathliam on 03-01-05 at 08:49 PM
Contestant #9.

"Piece of My Heart" - Janis Joplin

Who is suprised she puts a country spin on it? She really needs to be on 'Nashville Star'. She's got pipes but I need to see more range on her song selection.

Randy says just okay, why is she trying to change who she is. Paula says it didn't show versatility, not her favorite performance. Simon says loved her last week, but this week like a cover band and she seemed stiff on stage.

"Paula"
Posted by Angelfood on 03-01-05 at 08:51 PM
wow. Really being harsh & for-real tonight.

Or she's just ditto-ing Randy.

Who forgot Paula's Rum & Coke?? C'mon, fess up!

"RE: Paula"

Their happy juice from last night wore off. I had a feeling the girls were going to be slammed by the judges tonight, they were so overwhelmed by the guys last night.

"Piece of my heart"

Didn't Faith cover this song, also? I think that's why she picked it.

Still think she did the best, the girls are very weak this year.

Contestant #10 -- sings "If I Ain't Got You"

Too many hand gestures, too many funny faces to the camera. I don't know, it's just distracting. And she's having pitch problems.

Randy gives her credit for trying a tough song. Paula says she started strong, but needs to focus on her pitch. Simon calls it an overcooked performance, she oversang and went out of tune, should have been her and a piano.

eta for typo and add song title
