"Fame-Ep. 1"

Wow does the talent on Fame blow American Idol out of the water! I don't think ANY of the top performers of American Idol would've made it past the first group on Fame.

I was pleasantly surprised at the whole productions. The judges are great and Joey Fa....whatever his name is, is a decent host. Debbie Allen is a sweetheart, but it's already getting old for me.

I'll definitely be tuning in the rest of the summer. Hopefully the rest of the talent continues to roll out.

I agree! I really loved this premire. The only thing that I would have liked to see more of were the cuts at Debbie's boot camp. For once I actually agreed with the judges on their first three picks.

I got a little nervous at the beginning of the episode, though, because I swear one of the contestants looked just like Lamar from "Revenge of the Nerds".

I was anxiously awaiting this show because I used to love the tv show Fame and watched it religiously. Here's my run-down of the 1st 6 semi-finalists (the songs they sung are in brackets).

Shannon (Hot Stuff). Wow, she was awesome and what an amazing pair of legs she has. Does anyone else find she looks like Brittany Spears?

Danny (Isn't She Lovely). He was so so. I wasn't impressed.

Mackenzie Thomas (Don't Rain on my Parade). Great voice but very Broadway. There was something about her I didn't like. Too perky??

Alex Boyd (Just Friends). Very nice voice and he's cute. Didn't wow me but he is noticeable.

Judy Ho (Gotta be Real). Good voice but I feel it was a bad song choice for her.

Gary Adams (Rock with you). Very nice voice but I wasn't wowed.

I was happy with the 3 chosen by the judges as I picked the same ones. Judy & Mackenzie admit they are not dancers. That ticks me off. Fame is all about dancing and singing. If you can't dance, then audition for American Idol. I would hate for someone who can't dance to win over someone who has spent their life dancing (although I'm sure that won't happen).

I was pleasantly surprised to see how nice Debbie Allen was. What a great teacher she is.

The only judge I didn't like was Carnie Wilson. I have a feeling she'll be getting on my nerves very soon.

I had hoped to see more of the actual dancing auditions and really want to see more dancing all around. I'll definitely continue to watch this show.

Edited to add: Weltek, you are absolutely right about the singing caliber of this group being so much higher than American Idol. There's no comparison.

I've never been able to sit through an episode of AI but I had no problem watching this. Of course it's from Stone Stanley of The Mole fame so of course it would be a classy production.

I agree about the talent FAR out doing American Idol. Even if you take out the fact that these people can actually move across a stage and have personality (2 things not required by AI as evidenced by the winners) the singing itself seemed much better. I don't think most of the AI finalists would have made call backs.

Does anyone know who sings the theme song? I really liked it. I've been looking for the remix version and I just can't seem to find the right one!?

Irene Cara sang the song and it was composed by Dean Pitchford & Michael Gore. You can purchase it at Amazon.com. Not sure if this is what you are looking for.

I loved this show too. Although I would liked to see Mckenzie again. Her voice was/is just amazing and I think she can move just is unsure. Remember she is young. Maybe we will get a call back group.

I'm sure McKenzie will have a wonderful Broadway/theatre career. She just seems an odd fit for anything else.

I enjoyed it.
I must be getting old though, because I couldn't figure out why they dressed all the women up like Hookers. Was that necessary?
The Blond looks like a stripper, all she needed was a pole to swing around on.

Very talented group though.

I didn't like Mackensie

I guess I'll be the black sheep and say I didn't like "Fame". I think the talent is below that of other talent show (i.e. "American Idol") and the quality of hosts and judges is a might sub-par.

I do enjoy the Broadway-esque quality of the show, which is fun, but I think the talent is awful, and I think I feel jaded by the judging because there is no "Simon", unless Carnie Wilson fills that role. She seems like she could jump into that, after her spat with Debbie Allen.

Also, Debbie Allen, stomps on everything the judges say anyway. I don't see why there should be judges if Debbie Allen totally talks over what they just said prior to her commentary, the judges are kind of patronizing (Paula Abduls) and Debbie Allen just reiterates how hard they worked and how "good" they were.

I coudn't watch the entire show and I kept flipping channels in the middle of it. I thought the talent wasn't very good, and that girl who went from NYC to Chicago (who's in the Final 24 now) Simon would not have stood for that, and I don't think auditions like that, in genral, should either, if you sucked before, we're not going to soften our hearts and let you in even if we think you weren't that good, unless you're Debbie Allen.

I don't know, I hope it gets better, I do like the musical numbers. Since, like any person who bashes a show, I will still watch it, just not as intently as "American Idol" or any other reality show.

After watching Episode 2, I know what I have an issue with, with "Fame". It's primarily the judges and Debbie Allen. I know I touched upon this the last time I preached on this thread.

Now that Jemison Tiangco, I did like her.

Maybe the "talent" they featured on Episode 1 was just a bad foreshadowing of what was to come (at least to me), so maybe the talent ratio will go up. Upon watching the first episode, I said Serena was the ONLY one with a natural talent and ability, and I still feel that way. Hopefully she wins and this show won't be a waste.

But here we go with the judges. Nobody is saying anything that bad about the contestants. Or they says something bad and try to pick it up with a compliment. I think they need to be blunt and straight forward. As opposed to what has been posted on this thread, I think the talent on "American Idol" surpasses what they have on "Fame". Dancing is differetn story, but the singing ability is by far greater on "American Idol". Carmen Rasmusen would be competition on this show (okay, maybe I overspoke...LoL)

But maybe we don't need a "Simon", but Debbie Allen. Ugh! As much as I respect her, very familiar with her work and her choreography, great career. But it is absolutely unnecessary for her to shower the contestant with compliment after compliment and shade over what any of the judges has said prior to the fact. "Nevermind what so-and-so said, you were great!" I think they need to learn what they did wrong and what they can improve for the betterment of their "talent". That's why I think Simon is how he is... well, unless you really just suck.

I just saw the tape of the first episode. I already like this show, hope the ratings are good. It's perfect for the summer.

As for the first showdown, I loved that Alex Boyd kid, he was great.

The rest were ok, but nothing major. I did enjoy watching it.

Debbie Allen is hilarious. I hope she and The Singer That Used To Be Carnie Wilson (TSTUTBCW, for short--lol), boy has she lost weight, duke it out at some point.

Joey is no Ryan Seacrest, but he held his own, give him time to get his groove.

Overall, this was a very pleasant surprise.

ROFL - I hope so too

Yes, it was a pleasant surprise. I thought the level of talent was very high and overall I was satisfied with the judge's picks. I'm bummed I missed the second episode because I couldn't remember what night it was on, but I won't miss the third!

It's so interesting to see what a warm reception this show had at first, considering that activity in the forum really seemed to become non-existent by the end of its season.

You're probably right but I can't help but notice that fame was cancelled long ago, and AI is still around(although this is the last year thankfully)
