"Treasure Hunters"

This one looks like fun - TAR meets National Treasure. It has a special 2-hour premiere on June 18 at 8 PM before settling in on Mondays at 9 PM.

Our site has a summary of the show, and the official Web site is ready for traffic. The teams are already nicknamed for your convenience - like "Team Air Force" and "Team Southie Boys". Lots of cheesecake here - three tiara wearers, three that must've just missed, and three other hotties. No Fran & Barrys in this bunch.

But this show isn't like that other show at all. Instead of 11 teams of 2 bound by love, friendship, or blood (or 10 teams of 4 family members), they have 10 teams of three bound by friendship or blood (no dating couples here). And instead of a race around the world for $1 million, it's a race with travel to historically significant locations for a grand prize of untold riches (probably Friends DVDs).

Both have cryptic clues, physical & mental challenges, and periodic eliminations, but don't all good reality shows have those elements? Don't answer that, WRP lawyers.

Anyway, I'm about to give this show the kiss of death by declaring that I'm going to be following this show. And I'll even sign up for any/all episode summaries.

Watch this thread for future updates.

I'm realitybites and I approved this post.

I must admit that the show looks fairly interesting. I think I'll tune in and see how it is. I don't think I'd do well on a team since my brain screams and runs for cover when it comes to trying to solve clues and such. (I won't be winning the treasure by playing at home!)

I am looking forward to this show. It sounds like a combination of TAR and The Mole. I still miss The Mole. I want a game where they have to think and solve things rather than just vote off someone they find b!tchy.

the b!tchiness is just on the inside.

Yeah, I've seen the previews. We plan to give this one a chance, too. Looks like it has real potential. If it is as good as it appears it could be, I'd prolly be willing to do a summary or two, if you need a stand-in.

If it is a "play at home" show, we should really try and put the spoiling abilities together and solve the clues together.
That's if we stay awake past the first 15 minutes of course.

ETA: I went to the web site and didn't get a good impression at all. Funny how the three grad students "happen" to be beautiful as it is written! And the three miss USA contestants of course say they will surprise everyone with their intelligence. Three nerds who say they know everything about women! If neither team ex-CIA or Air-Force make final 3 with this sorry bunch of players, the country is in more danger than we thought! It seems that someone looked at what has worked before and threw all the ingredients together. I expect the mix will be hard to digest. This won't be for spoilers but for Bashers it will be perfect!

At first glance this show looks very cool! Actual clues to solve? Wow!

I'll definitely be watching the two hour premiere, which means I'll likely get sucked in (I do that very easily).

Besides, from what I've seen about the crappy summer TV schedule, it looks like all I'll be watching is this, Big Brother, last Comic Standing & Nightmares and Dreamscapes (Stephen King show on TNT).

I think having to solve the clues will be AWESOME! Unlike TAR (which I really like) where they just race to the markers but have to actually figure something out will be way cool.

I haven't decided if I am watching BB just yet. If Magpiehole is included...I ain't watching!

Looks great! I, too, miss 'The Mole'. It was one of the best reality shows ever because they actually had to use their brains and, best thing ever: no bunching.

Thanks for the alert and I'll do a season pass for it.

Okay, my bad. I just tried it again. Originally, it wouldn't load at all. Now it loads in a 'You are not a registered user. We have nothing to say to you' page. Either way, I can't see the spoiler, but I'm sure people who can read it will find it informative. Also possibly a never-ending source of spam if the site's registery likes to play tricks. However, I choose to trust the Internet at this time. Not for myself, because I'm not signing up there, but I'm sure y'all can trust that site enough to register. Let me know what happens, okay?

Just because you're too lazy to register for EZ, don't even hint at the idea that I'm posting spam. I'm quite sure that others here have read the spoiler, and if you'd care to ask around (if that wouldn't be too much of an imposition on your laziness), you'll find that when I post an episode spoiler, it is not only NOT spam, it is 100% accurate. Want proof?

There's my last spoiler (Survivor). I've done the same thing many times over, for many shows, including TAR and The Apprentice. You don't have to worry about registering, so a single click should give you the instant gratification you so desperately crave, without the trying experience of fatfingering your keyboard to death creating an EZ nic.

If you need more references, ask the Survivor spoiler people here who I am. Until then, don't even dare to insult me.

Don't confuse me with the wannabe Capote.

Speaking of spam, I find it quite ironic that this Estee person would mention spam on a site with popups. Does she get out much? The postcount says "no."

"RE: Treasure Hunters"
Posted by ARnutz on 06-09-06 at 08:22 PM
I think you misunderstood. Estee was not calling your information spam. Notice her wording again...

Also possibly a never-ending source of spam if the site's registery likes to play tricks.

She was referring to registering on the site and thus receiving spam from them.

FYI: I have heard your name before and know you have been a reputable spoiler source in the past, but I wouldn't register for another site to find out spoilers for this show either.

I wasn't aware that EZboard had built-in spam, unlike the highly suspect popups on this board. Perhaps a little less paranoia might do you some good.

As far as "reputable... in the past" goes, you obviously don't know much. My reputation in regard to spoiling is literally unimpeachable, and there has never been the slightest hint of any spamming (or other) tricks linked to my board. It is, after all, an EZ board, with all it's limitations. I just prefer to save my bandwidth (and the fees associated with it) for people who take the time to register.

"RE: Treasure Hunters"
Posted by ARnutz on 06-09-06 at 08:48 PM
I'm not really sure why you're being so defensive. It has nothing to do with you. EZBoard itself could send out spam to any users who register on your site without your knowledge.

"reputable...in the past" means just that... in the past... up until now... not yet in the future. Excuse me for trying to compliment you.

Anyway... welcome to RTVW. You may want to take a moment to read the board guidelines at the top of the page.

But it doesn't, as anybody here who has been visiting Sucks for the past 5 years knows. And yes, I know many of you post there as well.

>"reputable...in the past" means just that...

Past, present, future, all the same when it comes to posting this type of spoiler. You insult me by insinuating that I would deviate from my own pattern.

I was welcome here long ago.

Perhaps your precious Estee of the 14billion posts should check those guidelines, before jumping on someone she considers a newbie. I've been here for quite a while. Much longer than you might think, if you're making the mistake of judging by postcount.

Quality beats quantity every time.

For those of you who think it's appropriate to pick on someone with a low post count, please remember that the guideline about being nice to new posters applies to you too. And when you suspect a troll, you should alert a mod and let us handle it, not go after the poster yourself. I'm disappointed that I have to remind posters who've been around as long as you all have of those rules.

Harold has been around for quite awhile despite his low post count and he is definitely no troll. His information has been proven credible on more than one occasion. And I'm sure I'm not the only person who appreciates his willingness to share his information here.

1) Harold only posts spoilers when he ABSOLUTELY has the information (e.g., when he's seen a screener). Thus, his information is ALWAYS right. Harold, thanks for sharing.

2) If you don't go to sites with popups, you'll never read the Washington Post online. There's nothing inherently malicious about popups, and I've never seen a malicious popup show up through our current ad vendor (which covers almost three years now). But I'm sure there are still malicious popups out there.

3) I've been a member of EZ since back when we were over there in February 2001 (after our first server at RTW died), and I've never seen a piece of EZ-related spam. Then again, I've never had a piece of spam through RTW either ... unless you count all the scammers that try to post Paypal pyramid schemes on the message boards in an effort to separate fools and their money (which we delete as quickly as we see them).

I plan to do summaries of all the episodes, even if some of them don't make it to "official" status. (where's the signup sheet, guys?)

On a side note, I'm really nervous because this will be the first show I write a summary for that will have an audience of more than, like, 40 people.

Summary history:

* One episode of "Beg, Borrow & Deal" (Who?)
* The whole season (except one eppie) of BB&D 2 (What? They made a sequel? WHY??)
* The whole season of "I Wanna Date a Race Car Driver!" (Huh?)
* The whole season of "American Dream Derby" (I had a joke in mind, but rejected it due to bad taste)

P.S. Guess what ad is playing as I write this? Yeah baby.

This actually looks pretty good. Kind of a combination of my favorite two reality shows, TAR and The Mole. I'm looking forward to it, as long as it's done right. It could end up being kinda tacky and stupid though.

If it's good, I might try grabbing one of the later summaries of the show from realitybites, just like I did for Beg, Borrow, and Deal 2.

Ah yes, BB&D 2. That was a fun two months. Three of the contestants stopped by to say hello, and the time slot got changed - twice. Your recap was very good, BTW

Anyway, you can do the recap episode if "Treasure Hunters" has one. I hate those things with the heat of 10,000 suns.

"TV Guide and TAR Family edition comparison"

Here's a TV Guide online article on this from today. My thoughts in this:
1. it sounds cool, I hope it is like TAR except with more thinking clues.
2. I am afraid the initial description sounds too much like TAR family edition. Teams of 3 (which is almost 4), going to historical places in the US and try to make them seem exotic. Even a Brown family (instead of a Black family) and the Fogals, who have God on their side (see: Weavers).

Da Vinci Code Meets Reality TV!
by Matt Webb Mitovich

Treasure Hunters host Laird Macintosh

Mix equal parts The Da Vinci Code and The Amazing Race, then sprinkle in Nicolas Cage's National Treasure, and you'd get NBC's Treasure Hunters. The new reality-TV competition (premiering this Sunday at 8 pm/ET, with the second episode airing Monday at 9) sends 10 three-person teams boating, jetting and helicoptering across America on a treasure hunt of (buzzword alert!) "epic scale" — seeking out "mystical artifacts," "cracking codes" and uncovering "clues" in the pursuit of a "hidden key" that will lead them to, and unlock, the grand prize.
Acknowledging that one of the producers on Treasure Hunters is none other than Imagine Television's Brian Grazer — aka the very man who gave us Tom Hanks as Da Vinci code-breaker Robert Langdon — executive producer Jane Lipsitz (Project Runway, Last Comic Standing) says, "The things that are successful about The Da Vinci Code are taking these incredibly familiar icons and secrets and mysteries around them, and we applied that to Treasure Hunters. But this is about secrets of American history, so in that sense, it's a 'more secular' version."

The way that Treasure Hunters sets itself apart from reality kin Amazing Race is twofold. "There's a big play-at-home factor for the audience," says Lipsitz, "and there's a connective tissue that runs throughout all our episodes, as you have to figure out how all these artifacts connect to bring you to the final treasure."

Who's on the hunt? The teams are handily categorized as follows: Geniuses (who boast 10 academic degrees among the three of them); Grad Students (including the reality-TV requisite set of hottie twins); Young Professionals; Southie Boys (Boston buds who brag of, no joke, their "street smahts"); the Wild Hanlons (a cinch to win if mullets come into play); Ex-CIA; Air Force; Miss USA (pageant also-rans who debate early on whether or not to "use" the menfolk yet); and two families, the Fogals (who have God on their side, seeing as papa doth preach) and the Browns (almost embarrassingly, African-American brothers).

Noting that "casting is always a key to the success of these series," Lipsitz says Treasure Hunters "takes all kinds of smarts and intelligence — street versus book smarts, rational versus logical thinking — and we wanted to have teams that represented all of that. At first glance, Ex-CIA and Air Force would seem to be in the lead, but we also wanted people with interesting and more relatable approaches to how they solve puzzles. And while there are physical elements , we balance that with the intelligent side as well."

It is also Treasure Hunters' ambition to show off the historical side of America, as opposed to the almost-incomprehensible globe-trotting and tropical locales featured on other reality offerings.

"A lot of shows out there show exotic foreign places, and we feel like America hasn't been explored in that way," says Lipsitz. "So when arrive at Mount Rushmore, we wanted that to feel huge and magnificent and meaningful and just as exotic, even though it's on American soil."

But exactly what is it that is hidden somewhere in these United States? What is the treasure — depicted in the show's opening as a chest of gold coins straight out of a prop closet — that these teams seek? Lipsitz's lips are sealed. "The treasure itself is part of the mystery," she hedges. "Like a real-life treasure hunt, you never know what you're actually going to find!"
