Checking www.thefutoncritic.com for the ratings, it isn't doing terrible in the ratings but is not doing all that well, so it is hard to say. Being up against Hell's Kitchen it isn't likely to do as well as it might if there was no new programing to compete with. It is doing better than the re-runs on ABC at the time slots it is in.

The re-run episode at 8 pm didn't get very good ratings, but hen the re-run of Hell's kitchen it was up against didn't do that well either. I'm not sure any show does well when it is the re-run of the previous week.

LAST EDITED ON 07-04-06 AT 03:28 PM (EST)

The latter question (will it be back?) is probably easier to answer, but to answer it requires an answer to the first question.

Stylistically, TH is a mixed bag. It's clearly more intellectual than TAR, and it seems to be surprisingly physically demanding. However, the host is nothing special, the casting is less than inspired, the corporate sponsorship is (occasionally) irritating, the clue solving isn't always fun to watch, and the producers have made it difficult to get to know the team members individually.

I'm considerably less excited about the show than I was before it aired, but it's decent enough mindless entertainment. I wish it wasn't up against "High Stakes Poker" on GSN, though.

So, do I think it will be back? The list of reality shows that I've bothered to watch is littered with a bunch of shows that didn't make it. I'm the kiss of death for a show, and I think it will continue here. As mentioned elsewhere, the ratings aren't that great, and they've been fading. NBC may be desperate for hit programming, but I don't think they're this desperate. For this show, the hunt ends with the last episode of this season.

I'm realitybites and I approved this post.

> It's clearly more intellectual
>than TAR,

yes this is true, but what I've been getting a little annoyed at, and maybe this is editing, but with a lot of clues once the first team finds it, the other teams can find it a lot easier. For instance, the 14th flag area. The clues were under a fire pit. Well, once it was dug up then anyone coming after that can see that the earth there was all loose and find it a lot easier. I think the clue thing could be a bit more complicated and therefore more entertaining. Like maybe they could have had 3 or 4 different spots where the clue could have been.

>and it seems to be surprisingly physically demanding.

From the first show it was obvious that the Browns aren't going to make it far because this race IS so physically demanding .

> However, the host is
>nothing special,

Is he human even???? I don't know if they are going for the "Mission Impossible" or "Charley's Angles" type of thing where the host is just basically a voice in a box, but it's not working for me. He's got all the personality of cardboard.

>the casting is less than inspired,

Outside of the Wild Hanlons, who frankly act like they are on some back woods hunting trip and not on any race,- it's the usual round up of contestants.

>the clue solving isn't always fun to watch, and the producers
>have made it difficult to get to know the team members individually.

Outside of the Hanlons, the Fogals and the Browns, I don't know who's who really. That could be because those for mentioned teams will be out soon and therefore are shown the most.

>I'm considerably less excited about the show than I was before
it aired...

Here, Here. I have to tape this show and I only watched last Mon. show last night. That means that for me, it's not that exciting. I'll keep watching though, at least as long as the Hanlons are there. They are like nothing I've ever seen before and I find them the most entertaining.

I wish they would show more of how the teams figure out some of the clues. For example, they explained how Air Force came up with the water idea but not how anyone else did (I don't count the Hanlons). I can't believe that ALL the other teams just immediately understood the idea of water refracting light as soon as they got to the bucket or that ALL of them saw what AF did and just copied it.

I know I'm not typical but I was looking forward to seeing some smart people doing some smart things for a change (I really miss The Mole). I'm tired of stupid, mean, idiotic, annoying, dumb, obnoxious contestants (why I don't watch Big Brother).

Like others have said, it has the potential to be a great show. Hopefully, NBC will give it a second chance and tweak it a bit.

Even my sister, who hates shows like this, enjoys watching.

I like the fact that they're all regular people--no model/actor teams, noone looking to get into Hollywood. Of course, the first seasons of shows like this always have normal people for the first couple seasons.

Regular people? Miss USA?! If the show bombs it will because of the casting and the feel that it is turning into a summer American History course! Summer school or the BBQ, which would you choose?

Oh, yeah. Miss USA. I forgot about them. They're so...boring.

I kind of like the educational aspect. But I'm a nerd like that.

Unfortunately TAR11 has a team "Miss USA" in the upcoming season too. Stunt casting -- the gift that keeps on giving.

Yes, but TAR often gets rid of weak teams like that very early in the game.

Whatever I may have thought prior to this doesn't matter. If they are so screwed up that they show the U.S. the scheduled Episode 3 while skipping that one and showing Episode 4 in Canada, there's no way it will continue.

Obviously no one at the network expects it to continue. If they did they'd prolly notice that they're showing the wrong episode and fix it sometime before it ended.

It is even worse than that.

Canada saw episode 4.

USA saw episode 3.

But get this, the NBC website still thinks we are on episode 2! Will re-check in the morning but this really is a big mess. Plus the spoiler for episode 4 may cause a big gap in the viewers in the USA. I agree with whoever thinks the Wild Hanlons have taken over.

Looks like episode 3 is up, most of the time the episode info shows up closer to 6 am the next day than right after the show airs. They may wait for these things to show in Hawaii or something before updating.

Is that what happened? My goodness, I was so confused last night I didn't know what to do - so I ended up recording it instead of watching it.

Thank you - I thought I was losing my mind!

Forget the programming snafu which in itself is horrible but may be due only to Global Canada and not NBC and the "TH" producers. Global is horible. They program 1 NFL game each Sunday and they switch from a FOX to a CBS broadcast from week to week. Their signal goes over the US signal but get this: Sometimes they will broadcast the FOX NFC matchup but cover the CBS signal. So on three channels from 3 networks, we have 1 game. They are screwed up!

This program will fail even without this. Can someone tell me why the Grad students weren't allowed to continue as a 2 player team? They have only 4 or 5 competitive teams casted, one of them shows real determination and they disqualify them!? In football they penalize a team that has 12 men on the field but who heard of penalizing a team for having 10 men on the field??
There was no advantage on being 2, only one less person to help with clues. LEAVE THEM IN!! STUPID SHOW.

I don't think the flub is that big of a deal to the average American that may be watching. They would have no idea of the mix-up.

I don't follow the thought that if there is mix-up like this...the show will not be continued. Can you explain?

"RE: Not after tonight"
Posted by Earl Colby Pottinger on 07-04-06 at 07:58 AM
Simple, mistakes like this happen when people just don't care. Notice it is not just the air of the wrong show, but that no-one at the network spotted the mis5take in the first ten minutes and switched to the earlier tape.

And if the Canadian stations only had the one tape, it means someone at NBC does not even bother to check what they shipped before hand.

It indicate a lack of caring to put out a good show. The editting already shows that, the huge amount 'in your face' product placement also shows that. This is just about the final straw as far showing the network care about putting out a good quality, long term product.

There a number of things that could be done to make this a better show, putting the shows out in the correct order is however the most basic one.

Hopefully they don't show the final win next week.

I still don't understand how the average person watching the show realized that Canadians saw another show and will automatically quit watching...which is what was referred to *points up* up there.

It indicate a lack of caring to put out a good show. The editting already shows that, the huge amount 'in your face' product placement also shows that. This is just about the final straw as far showing the network care about putting out a good quality, long term product.

The "in your face" product placement doesn't have as much about editing as money. These companies pay top dollar for product placement like this and it has happened for ever on television. I don't see this "proves" that NBC doesn't care about the quality of the show.

There a number of things that could be done to make this a better show,

I am sure there are ways of making the show better in everyone's eyes and not everyone will ever be totally happy with any show. Just visit all the forums and look at the people that lvoe certain shows with others saying they hate 'em. It is a never ending cycle.

"RE: Not after tonight"

I don't know that the screw up in the Canadian broadcast would be something that makes Americans stop watching, but should it demonstrate a lack of care about the show. Now it may mess up the Canadian ratings, but I do not think those tend to drive network decisions.

On some non-reality shows where the network didn't put the shows on in the order that maintained the story-line, (Firefly for one) it was an early indication that there wasn't much support for the show long-term.

Now, it could mean nothing, but it doesn't tend to make one feel less confident about being picked up for a second season. A lot depends on what if anything they have cooking for summer next year. I don't think the ratings so far would be something that would bump the show from a summer run to a regular season run.

Now they don't seem to have much else to put on (especially since they re-run last weeks show one slot up) so it doesn't give me the pull out before the show is over vibe, but it does make me wonder how much effort the network is putting into the show. Now if they move the night, or stop promoting the heck out of it that would be another indication things do not look good.

I hope that it is meaningless and they do more seasons. I like that it can take some thought process to work out the clues.

"RE: Not after tonight"
Posted by mysticwolf on 07-04-06 at 03:08 PM
No, vols. I didn't say it would necessarily make people stop watching this season. As Prof. said, my point was more that if the networks and stations are paying so little attention to the show that a mistake of this magnitude isn't caught and rectified fairly soon into the broadcast it's not a good sign.

Additionally, if so few peeps are watching that there were no calls to the station to alert them that they are showing episode 4 instead of 3, it's an even worse sign in terms of ratings.

Now I don't know if there were calls alerting them, or not. But, if there were, and the station still didn't correct it, then it's hard to believe they're getting ratings that would cause them to care enough to call for new seasons.

Don't get me wrong. I still like the show. I'm just not convinced that the networks and stations particularly care about it, or whether it ever returns.

I don't know the ability of local stations to make decisions on what episode of a show to air. Do they still send out tapes? I thought it was all sent out in feeds based on satellites.

Even if Canadians called in to the local station...I don't know that they would have the ability to change to the correct show. (I am sure someone will be along soon enough to fill us in on exactly how this works.)

I thought the show was getting decent ratings...as in there aren't rumors of cancelling the show. Am I wrong in saying that?

I would think that it would be a great disservice to NBC if the execs didn't care about a show and whether it was successful...I would think it is their main goal to have the quality of shows that will attract viewers.

The network is promoting the carp out of the show here in Tennessee. They have been wearing out the commercials. Maybe others can share how the network is promoting it other markets.

"RE: Not after tonight"

The ratings seem OK, not great, usually pulling like #3 ish for the night depending on demographic, etc. Usually it is doing better than the re-runs of reality TV on ABC, worse than Hell's Kitchen and just a bit worse than the re-run comedies on CBS, but that is the only non-reality network shows on at that time.

It is getting a fair amount of the really short blurb we have this show on during the other NBC shows I watch, but not really what I would call promoting the hell out of it.

It is just one of those "could be a red flag" symptom that has just been seen in too many shows that haven't been getting enough network support to do well. Could just be a "we were mentally on vacation for the 4th even though we had to be at work" type of issue.

"RE: Not after tonight"

There is product placement. And then there is IN YOUR FACE product placement.

Treasure Hunters's is of the second kind as they keep verbal mentioning names and making billboards out of people.

Product placement is having very one use the same model of phone and having us see it when calls are placed or the host gives a clue. IN YOUR FACE is insisting to telling us the name of the phones used very ten minutes.

Product placement is seeing people use ASK.com to do thier searches instead of GOOGLE.com, IN YOUR FACE is having the t-shirts worn by the players having ASK.com printed in big bold letters. PS, notice the Harlons even while wearing the shirt still did not think of using thier computer.

As for improving the show I think you will find that a very large percentage of viewers can all agree on a few simple changes, like not having the host repeating the same clue over and over - have more time spent on the players solving puzzles and a few others.

I love the show for what it can be.

The clues are great vs. Amazing Race.

The production and editing is very fragmented.

I find it interesting where they go and the history surrounding their choices.

Still flustered at having teams that aren't deserving.

I love it! No, it's not perfect, but I actually like it better than TAR. Burnett looks to make the people on his shows suffer, whether physically or mentally. He wants fighting and humiliation. I like that a good part of this show is figuring out the clues. I don't like that the teams can figure out the clues by seeing what the last team did. As for the host, Phil isn't exactly Mr. Personality. I like that on TH, there's no racing to the matt. Oh! Speaking of Matt (ex-Air Force)

I think this one is catching up to TAR in my list of favorites.
The premise of the show is much better but there's no Phil or "two choices, each with their pros and cons."

I'm definately hoping they bring this one back for next season. Does anyone know if it's doing well in the ratings?

Taken from the week of July 25th ratings:
"Treasure Hunters,” dipped to a new series low of 1.7 in adults 18-49 last night, down 6 percent from last week’s 1.8 and 26 percent from a 2.3 average just two weeks ago.

At 9 p.m., Fox's "Kitchen" led at 3.4, followed by CBS's "Two and a Half Men" and "Mother" reruns at 2.5, ABC's "CMA Music Festival" at 1.9, NBC's "Treasure Hunters" at 1.7

It sounded good on paper but the cast, the host, the stupid rules and the endless searches are killing it.

I think a lot of the poor rating comes from 'Hell's Kitchen', that show is far easyier for people like my mom to understand. To us fans we get fun even when we don't get the clues, yelling out 'of-course' or hitting our foreheads if the teams solve a puzzle before us.

But for a lot of people out there the show just makes them feel dumb.

The large number of players early on has the same effect on FmTAR - confusion. I follow the teams alright but neither my mom or the nurses for my brother can keep the players sorted out.

In a better time slot I think it would do a lot better, but the rushing pace and lack of pan-views of diffirent locations also keeps it a step below TAR.

I hope there are future shows.

----------------------------------------------------------------

The reason I don't watch Hell's Kitchen is I am a fan of Chef! The star of Chef could strip a sou-cook down without a single swear word - the facial expressions had power. All the guy in Hell's Kitchen has is swear words.

As a dedicated TAR fan, I ignored this show until last Monday, when DW had it on and wanted me to watch it with her. Based on the partial episode I saw, there will be no second season. While it is more cerebral than TAR, I found the pace to be dreadfully slow, the editing was choppy to the point of distraction, the excessive product placements made me long for Survivor's Pringles reward challenges, and the endless repeats of the host's speech on everyone's cell phones (made by who? Oh yeah, MOTOROLA) were tedious.

I realize I missed several episodes, and they might all have been great, but I'm in no hurry to watch another episode.

All you said was true. And this seem to be a very badly edit leg compare to most of the earlier ones. But if you watch the first shows - The clues man! - The clues!

No nonsense, about go to this address, or look for the man who dresses with a TAR scarf. Almost nothing but real clues.

Besides not to watch the Harlons in action is a shame, please see if a friend can show you the first shows. Just remember they will start to laugh or groan about a second before you since they know what is coming.

I think one thing this show has going for it as opposed to TAR is the lack of bunching points. Things are open when the players arrive and they can get right to the task. I guess it shows that these points aren't really necessary to still have the drama.

"RE: Is Treasure Hunters a successful show?"
Posted by Snidget on 08-02-06 at 02:54 PM
IMO the don't need to bunch during the show because they are bunched at each and every stop. The start all together regardless of when they finished the last leg, so that built in bunching means you don't need to do it somewhere during the leg.

That's a shame if this show doesn't come back. While I do believe kinks need to be worked out, there is so much potential.

I really enjoy this show, because I love that the contestants have to really think for a change. I also like that they all start out the "leg" even, but the legs are so long and depending on your reasoning skills determines how long it will take you to reach the end of the leg.

The editing could be a little better, but since this is the first season of the show there is always more "explaining" done. I also thought this show might be good for younger viewers to get them interested in American History and learning more about the things featured in the episode.

Such a shame if this show disappears into obscurity.
