But, to the Air Force guy's credit, he went back down and retrieved another box for her and hauled it to the surface. That was when Pastor Fogal snatched it from her. Definitely not a "nice" thing to do...

I thought that the Air Force guy said that she could not haul it up, and since she saw the box first he hauled it up for her. Then went back and got his own.Did it say that they were not allowed to open it in the water? I might have missed that part.

It wasn't "not allowed" just not real smart.

I'm well on my way to despising them. They seem to be demonstrating unscrupulous behavior and an ungenerous, noncooperative spirit. Very Weaver-like.

I LOVE the comparison!!!netta68
At least the Weavers had decent prayers. The Fogels can't even seem to do that well most of the time.

LAST EDITED ON 06-20-06 AT 04:02 PM (EST)I have to agree with you. I don't expect that they have to be nice to other racers, I don't expect them not to use mis-direction, I do expect them to take questionable shortcuts.
But out and out stealing? Why talk about being religous if you are so ready to break God's commandments.
Worse, does anyone really know what the treasure is? Imagine all sorts of unchristian actions only to find the treasure is worth just a few thosand dollars! That would not make the hunt a bad game for me, just the chance to go so many places on someone else's dime would make it worth my time. Not that more money makes thier actions right, just what that goes around comes around.
At the very least, you would expect they would be concerned for each other. The parents ignoring their daughter while she was crying in pain from hurting her hand showed just what kind of people they really are. Hopefully one of them won't slip off a cliff or be hit by a car while the others are trying to get a clue.
The Grad Students were a nice contrast, I thought.

At least the Fogels didn't follow another team around trying to steal their combo like Billy Joe Jim Bob and his son, The village idiot tried to do to the Browns, after they wouldn't let them on their boat!! Granted it was a good strategic move not to take the last team, but they didn't have to yell "Goodbye clowns, I mean Browns!" as their boat left... THEN they follow the Browns around the island trying to steal their lockbox combo? Talk about karma!
I don't like 'em either, especially the loud-mouth mother.
It's Arkie Love
I feel the same way as you. Downright dirty playing from the father - and I'm pretty lax on calling dirty playing. For example, I thought the Frats cancelling the cabs on TAR was genius, as was Boston Rob paying off the bus driver not to open the back door and figuring out how to avoid the meat-eating Roadblock. But literally snatching a clue out of someone's hand is out-and-out cheating.I was also shocked that there was no compassion from either of them for their own child. She's well on her way to a break down. Fortunately, I know my good buddy karma will come along sooner or later and show them what's what.

Luna's Eclipses
Nope, I don't like them either. I thought stealing the map from the girls was really nasty and uncalled for. I also felt it strange that they totally ignored their daughter. WTF?
I just rewatched the show. And watching the previews for future eps it sure looks like The Fogals are going to be the villains. The previews make it look like the other teams all distrust The Fogals and turn on them. It might have been misdirection. But it sure sounded like the other teams were referring to The Fogals.
Are you kidding? All the teams are now against them after that little stunt they pulled with the 13'th star. The other teams helped them, then they left them behind claiming that they could not stop paddling (?????), even the teams that were not with them will hear about it from the teams they did shaft. They better pray that there is nothing heavy to move in the future. If the three of them can't portage a fiberglass canoe that I normally do by myself then there is a good chance they have doomed themselves.

Nope, you aren't the only one. What makes me sick is that they are "in your face" about their religious beliefs and values at the same time that they are, at least based on what we have seen, the most dishonest and unscrupulous team out there. I don't think you can have it both ways...You can't pray and thank God one minute, and screw people over the next. I'm pretty sure God don't work that way (but I could be wrong!)
I hated them before, but last night added fuel to my fire!I can't believe they made other teams stop at star 13, then made an excuse for why they couldn't stop and then prayed for the other teams! Pffft! Man, they are asshats!

I totally detest those people. I've been Fogaled. The nerve. I agree with what everyone has said about them. They are disgusting.

The thing that really put it over the edge was after Mom said that they should pray for the other teams, she just prayed for themselves, and didn't even mention the other teams.
Make this the best day of your life!
You are right. Much as I disliked Rob, if he had pulled off a trick like this, he would laugh as the con-job that put him into second place. But he would be honest about it, he would admit to tricking the other teams (atleast to him and his partner if not to the other teams), he would not be trying to make false claims to himsel and the camera about not being able to stop. He would never, never, never claim to be praying for the other teams and then pray only for his team. What gets me is how much the Focals lie to themselves to justify thier actions, and then think a quick prayer wipes out thier sins.
I thought she said she wanted to say a prayer for the other teams and then went on to pray for just themselves.I can't believe people have the nerve to represent themselves like this on nat'l tv.
I don't like them representing themselves as having faith in God, while behaving the way they do. There are many who actually try to live their faith, not just put on a show. And He knows who they are.

I think it's the new trend. Network producers saw how much controversy the Weavers stirred up and decided that now there has to be the token hypocritical religious family/team to keep the ratings high. It's a rather pathetic way to do it and in this case I almost have my doubts about whether or not these people are really what they say. They are so over the top nasty and seem to even being having fun being that way.

According to NBC.com here's the fathers bio:
Age: 48
Occupation: Pastor
Fave TV Show: The History Channel
Fave Movies: The Sound of Music
Fave Book: The Bible
Hobbies: Hiking and reading
Brad of Team Fogal Family lives in Orange County, California, has four grown children, and works as a pastor. He has been married to Margie for twenty-six years. After graduating from college, he obtained masters' degrees in both education and theology. Busy with life as an ordained minister, Brad loves people and enjoys serving his church. He likes preaching, reading, and various sports. He also likes to travel, although he prefers a more relaxed, conventional style than allowed for on the show. His original motivation for joining "Treasure Hunters" was to be with his wife and daughter and help them stay safe throughout the experience.
I'm wondering what the church he works in (assuming he is working) is thinking of their pastor right about now.
ETA: I see the answer is posted below. My bad for not reading the entire thread before posting.
After the first 2-hr show several people from Pastor Brad's church jumped in on message boards to defend them. Pastor Brad had a show watching party and everyone watched together. Pastor Brad told them about all the bad editing and nothing was what it seemed. Then he gave them all T-shirts that said "I've Been Fogaled". None of the people really understood what the phrase meant till they saw lastnight's show. Now I'm not so sure they want to wear their T-shirts. Pastor Brad (who can't seem to keep his mouth shut about the season) put an apology on his website about how they acted. But he said everyone is all friends now and they prayed for forgiveness. (I think the other racers are showing better morals by being forgiving to them.) Lots of excuses and bad editing remarks. He had put alot on his website about the season, but it has now disappeared. He can't resist talking about it. Even though he is not suppose to.And the Fogal daughter was so upset she went crying to NBC about how they were portrayed. She said they have told her this was the worst episode and they will be portrayed in a more favourable light from now on. Why do I see a pattern here? Fogal daughter cries her thumb is broken. Paramedic checked it and said it wasn't. Fogal daughter cries she can't carry canoe. Others do it for her. Fogal daughter cries about bad editing and NBC says they will make it all better. She is a 25 yr old married woman and teacher. But she acts like a child for attention and help.
I don't remember Mother Fogal's pray asking for forgiveness. I thought it went something like:All teams are equal, but we have Jesus as our co-pilot. Thank you. Amen.
LAST EDITED ON 06-29-06 AT 09:53 AM (EST)Which messages boards? Do you have an URL or Usenet group name?
I would like to read the reactions of these people after the second show and the ones to follow. It is very clear that he has shown one face to his flock and a totally diffirent face for the money.
The NBC message boards for this show has some of Brad's group posting. And they show up around the net on various other ones too.
I hate them, too.I do give them props for lying to other teams in an attempt to win. I would've done the same thing. It is a game, after all. Of course I'm not claiming I have any religious guidance.
I won't get into the whole hypocrite thing with them since we can all read the TAR:FE forums and replace 'Weaver' with 'Fogel' and get the point.I hate them 'cause they're so freaking annoying. I've only seen the first episode and I already want to shove a spork in the harpy mother's eye. Don't even get me started on the daughter.

The idiocy at the NBC forum makes me even more grateful for you guys. You're so...sane.
Lying to other teams was simply dumb. They assured themselves of second place instead of having to fight with the 2 other teams. However, they knew many teams were already beaten and for that little trick, they cost themselves any chance of receiving help down the line. That is the kind of move you use if you're battling for last place or if it is the last leg. In leg # 3 = STUPID.
Sure Romber used similar tactics throughout TAR 8 but which team was going to help them anyway!
You are right, right, right!Unlike TAR you gain nothing over the other teams by being first, other than getting more time to rest.
No first place prize.
No leaving before the other teams.
No money to spend on extras (better hotel, clothing, extra with any spare time.)
Nothing. There is virually no diffirence in what position you arrive at the final puzzle of the leg as long as you are not the last team to solve it. The Focals clearly needed help and it was offered, they could have milked the other teams for the next two or three legs if they had stayed nice. And why not? They knew the W.H. were sleeping and I think they already knew a team was ahead of them, so what did they gain by being in second place? Nothing as far as I can tell.
I wholeheartedly agree with you here. They have no reason to screw over the other teams than a desire to screw over the other teams. Since there isn't any real advantage to being first or anything other than last what they've done is assure themselves that when an elimination round comes up, if there is a way for the other teams to help them be dead last, they will.If I were on any other team I would be conspiring with everyone else to figure out how we could hinder them and get them eliminated.

Their actions might have been considered great game strategy if they had done it to just a couple random teams. But they did it to the very people that had stopped to help them earlier. It was like a slap in the face to the teams that had done nothing but be kind and helpful to them. People don't forget that.
It is poor strategy to do to any team this early in the game. This is the sort of thing to do in the last leg or two when you are close to the prize and the extra lead time really matters.Doing it this early blows all your future chances later.
Additionally, every time Rob finished a leg in first position he won a major prize. It was worth his while to burn bridges to other teams, not to mention as you already said those bridges were not worth much anyway.
Plus, I gotta add that Romber were plenty shady in talking people into things but I don't recall them ever doing anything as blatant as snatching something out of a players hands.Completely agree with those of you that are saying it's WAY too early & too insignificant to be playing this skeevy.
Okay, after watching the episode, I take back my support of their lying. Since there is no benefit for being first over second-to-last, which is, IMO, completely ridiculous, pulling a stunt like that is a stupid move, especially this early in the game. I can only hope that this'll come back to screw 'em in the end.And I hate that stupid wench of a mother even more and the daughter looks like a witch. The dad is not as bad.

.
I think we are seeing the result of a very poor analyst of the game. Mr. Fogal for some reason thinks this is TAR and he is Rob.The problems are; This is not TAR - lead times don't matter much.
He is not Rob, who can talk three teams to quit a task and end up following behind him *WITHOUT* getting any of them more upset with him for doing this. (How did Rob do that?).
It looks (note, I said looks) like Mr. Fogal is letting his greed override his thinking and upbringing.
LAST EDITED ON 06-30-06 AT 02:11 PM (EST)They're just channeling their inner-Weaver. Like many above have said, there was no reason for it. Why PO so many people for no reason? What did they gain from it? Now there's a double motivation to get them eliminated...they're a strong team and they've "Fogaled" so many others.
ITA with everyone else. As soon as I saw them praying "for the other teams" I immediately thought of the Weavers. Totally hypocritical, annoying, Bible-thumpers.They'll get what's coming to them at some point. As others have pointed out, there is no advantage to coming in second over eighth, so why make so many other teams so angry so early in the game? Makes NO sense.
I have no problem with playing dirty. But it really grinds my gears when a person professes to be one thing, and then acts, with no warning or disclaimer, another way.Unless the minister said something to the effect that "We're playing this game to win and we may not do things we would do normally", then it allows me to hate the hypocrisy.
I have no problem with priests and ministers and such, and I think many of them (a vast majority good people) are overshadowed by the highlighted losers (Phelps, the Boston Priest Pedophilics, Fogels, although the Fogels are far less harmful than the prior two).
I think this could be worse than the Weavers, mostly because while the Weavers were generally horrible, there was no one 'of the cloth', as it was put, in the group. Devout, hypocritical, people yes. But no one officially aligned with the order. This one though?
>
>Who despises the Fogel Family already?

You're not the only one LOL I missed the first episode, but from the episodes I have seen, the Fogals seem intent on living up to all the bad things people have said about "hypocrites"They could really be using this exposure to get their "message" across. But obviously their REAL message is no different than the very people they claim to be so different from -- and that message is, do whatever you have to do to win.
