"24 - 1/31 episode"

Posted by sittem on 02-01-05 at 11:15 AM
Today I'm in a bit of a rant mode. I love this show, but a couple of things last night irritated me. In some ways 24 is like TAR - TAR has bunching which we all hate (but I recognize is necessary). 24 stretches or compresses time beyond belief at times. This is necessary to a certain point, but last night was ridiculous.

I didn't rewatch the tape after the show, but I believe it was between 5 and 10 minutes (closer to 5) between the time that Jack called the only person he could trust and when Tony showed up helping Jack and gf escape. Now, either Tony just happened to be sitting in a coffee shop next to the building or he's actually Jacks guardian angel. Coudln't they somehow have worked the plot last night so a believable amount of time would elapse between call and Tony showing up?

Then, there was the question Heller asked about how long his son had been in deprivation. Again, without checking the tape, I believe he was told 2 1/2 hours. I suppose this could have been cumulative between the time it was done before Heller arrived and the second approved time. But, the second time I think I recall it had to be for less than an hour. It would have been real easy for the response to be 2 1/2 hours between the two times we had him in there - or to that effect.

Maybe I'm just in a bad mood and didn't get enough sleep.

Other than that the Behrooz thread with mommy is a good one. L like computer tech guy being a "hero" - good character!

It appears Marianne doesn't get outed next week - how does she escape that? Is it Jack jumping to the wrong conclusion about who knew and exposed him? How much longer will she last?

How long can the current crisis with the power plants last? We're looking at up to three more hours before there's a meltdown. Assuming this is averted, what's the next deeper crisis? How much worse can it get? The show is like peeling an onion each year because it's hard to keep one crisis aloft for more than six hours.

I agree with the minutes it took Tony to arrive, however, I loved that it was Tony. I was really surprised by that!

I can live the with time amount for the torture of the son. That seemed a bit more realistic.

I love the Araz family. It is making the whole show much more interesting. Bahrooz and his mom have some serious decisions to make and to whom they will take their case to.

I felt bad for Erin and the scene with her daughter. That pressure from running CTU and having her daughter in medical peril is going to do her in.

Ah the Mole is pinning everything on someone else. I am sure our "geek" will help in catching the true "spy".

Overall I liked the epsisode. They kept everything rolling and gave us a few surprises. Again, I think this season is much better than last.

Good points on the time stuff. I'd just never thought about it before. I tend to forget that this is a real-time sequential show so Tony showing up so soon doesn't make sense. I agree, though, that it was a real rush to see Tony. I wasn't expecting it at all and I started cheering when I saw him. When Jack said he was calling the only person he could trust, I was sure it was going to be Chloe, lol.

That whole thing with Erin and her daughter is still over the top for me. An unnecessary subplot. Wonder if they are going to integrate it into the larger scenario.

I have no idea what will happen after the power plant crisis. Rooting out the terrorist cell and seeing what the conspiracy is with the guy that Audrey identified are two possibilities.

Ditto.... I loved that it was Tony!! I think my screams were a bit too loud!!! Also I love Behruz and his mom, she is the new femme fatale (Mrs. Palmer and Nina were killed) I hope she and B make it through the day and the husband/dad doesn't.

I like Edgar, besides him and Jack at CTU, everyone else is superfluous and their side stories are even worse. A mole at CTU??? That's never happened before. At least with Nina you didn't find out (bc the writers probably didn't even know yet) that she was a mole until almost the 22nd hour.

I think that Audrey's husband will be a bad guy somehow. And Audrey, I was just hoping that she would be shot and die in Jack's arms. I just cannot stand any of the women that Jack loved/loves.

I do not know how much longer this series will last. They continue to reuse similar plot twists, etc. I like Kiefer enough to stay with it for more, but how much more, I'm not sure.

Tony was a pleasent sighting. I had it spoiled, but really, it didn't hurt my impression of him being back.

Glad to see that they really humanized the other side now. The Araz family are actual quality characters with multiple sides. The father's a ruthless dictator type, but that's the only normal villain there. Dina and Behrooz have shown a range of feelings and emotions, which is nice to see.

Edgar rocks. Although, I have some odd feelings about the mole. I don't think 24 usually, if ever, reveals a secret mole this early as an obvious connection to the terrorists of the storyline. I have to think there's something bigger there and there has to be someone else in CTU that's running this more subtly, since if Marianne was the best mole available, the terrorists are in trouble.

Audrey's husband is suspicious as hell and odds are that he'll try something drastic...but whether it be for good or evil, that's too be seen. I keep having an odd feeling about Heller. The odds of him being involved on the evil side have to be extremely low to none, but he seemed ridiculously calm in the prison and if he leads the arrest as the wrong person for the mole next week, who knows.

(Note: Only responding to Emy's post since I wanted to steal the format.)

I was cheering too when Tony showed up. I also thought Jack was calling Chloe. I didn't think Tony was showing up for a few hours yet. So I was happy to see him. Maybe he had been following Jack when Jack called him?

While I was a very happy girl to see Tony last night, I too thought the 5 minutes it took him to come to the rescue was very unrealistic, even for 24. I thought for sure Jack was calling Chloe.

And speaking of Chloe, I hope she comes back. I am still holding out hope that Jack will insist Chloe comes back, and then Chloe and Edgar will help save the day.

Regarding Heller's son and the deprivation time, I thought maybe they were giving a total time frame, not just the last bit that Heller approved? And who here thinks we haven't seen the last of the son?

Tony is back- Yay! Of course it's unbelievable- it's 24! LOL! I expect Michelle to make a come back too.

Edgar saves the day at CTU- sort of. He's this season's Chloe.

Where will Berhooz and his mom go now?

Spoliers below: (hidden text)
Marianne the Mole will eventually be found out by Jack and shot(?) According to TDT, two women will die at CTU in the next few episodes- possibly Erin's daughter and Marianne.

Spoiler at the bottom in case you don't want to know.

I personally don't mind the time continuity...you all say you want a more accurate timeline, but do you really? Do you know how much slower the show would feel? Its hard enough writing in the 2-3 main events that happen during the course of the season, but even harder when you factor in that every 42 minutes of screen time needs to come with some sort of show stopping cliff hanger to get us excited for the next week. This week, Tony fit the bill perfectly. If we were using an actual timeline, we wouldn't see that stuff till halfway through next week's ep. Not nearly as dramatic as seeing it at the end of this week's ep...now we have all week to wonder what Tony has been up to and all that stuff.

As for killing off Jack, did you know that Sutherland wanted to kill off Bauer in ep#2, but was overruled by the higher powers at FOX. That just shows you how commited Sutherland is to making this a great show, in that he was willing to sacrifice his own character in favor of making the show better. A cynic might argue that Sutherland just wanted to be relieved of the burden of having be the lead in a 24 ep TV show year to year.

SPOILER:

From what I've heard Driscoll's daughter slits her own wrists next week and kills herself. Guess those meds don't work so well after all.

It took me awhile, but I finally figured out how to see the hidden text. Think CTU needs any new agents?

Part of my enjoyment of the show is its twenty four hour premise and the fact that twenty four mini-crises are resolved over the season. Near mortal wounds don't phase these peeps. CTU must have a super secret first aid kit for all its players.

In addition, I love how people can travel huge distances in micro time. I guess CTU has some super sonic pods for that purpose. The SUVs are merely a shell.

The time discrepancies don't phase me. I just want to know what happens next.

That said, I had to miss this last night and I don't have TiVo (moment of silence, please). Does Fox repeat episodes?

yeah, the 2 1/2 hours bugged me too, but the 5 minutes not so much because i was trying to figure out who the trusted person was that i didn't notice how little time passed before Tony got there

also digging Edgar, and agree with your last comment. I found season 2 suffered from the same thing, just dumping unbelievable crises on top of one another. and i don't even find the override situation all that compelling or believable, even though I do like edgar.

I've gone through the first 2 seasons now. Didn't like the second half of season 2 quite so much. The coup attempt was kinda interesting, but it all seemed pale compared to George taking the plane down (I thought Jack being the pilot initially was also not so great...but the scene with him and George I suppose was worth it...not so much for the fact that it was filler and made Kim and her irrelevant subplot think he was dead). Waiting to see how Tony becomes a traitor now (ie what season 3 holds in store)! Liked Tony getting Tonyed by Carrie. I remember having seen exactly 2 scenes from season 2 (Kim turning the TV on in the bunker and finding Lonnie was lying, and the very last scene with Palmer) but nothing else from either of those episodes.

I don't know why the time stuff bothered me so much Monday - I'm just on a tight schedule now trying to get of town tomorrow and maybe it's just that time is so preciuos (and passes so quickly - like the five minutes I'll "waste" here!). All the time compressions just came crashing down last night in that 5 minutes.

I still love the show and can't wait each week. Hope I can find a way to watch it the next two weeks, but I hope my son will tape as a back up for me while I'm gone.

I think one of these days I'm going to purchase season 3 - I missed about 6 or 7 hours while we were out of country. In some ways it didn't matter a lot - so it's kind of like a soap opera in that way. You can miss some weeks and still pick up the main story line later. I think those are the only episodes I've ever missed so I think it might be worth the money.

I'm really liking season 3 so far. Have only seen the first 8 (rented), as well as the finale (which I saw when it originally aired, and which is one of my single favorite episodes). Disks 3-6 are all rented out at the Blockbuster I've been going to though, so I may have to see if I can find them elsewhere.

Okay something I have never been able to figure out after 3 seasons of this show.

Why the hell are all the people at CTU forced to work in the fricken dark?
The place has no lights! Has anyone ever seen an office building where everyone worked in the dark?

Um, I think it's supposed to make them look cool

haha bawdy! reminds me of that Calvin and Hobbes strip where Calvin is trying all sorts of things to be cool, including dark sunglasses, and Hobbes says "So it's cool to wander around and bump into things?" or something like

but my theory is that it's mood lighting. explains all the intra-agency shacking up going on, no?

Makes the computer screen easier to read, maybe? I know when you watch TV with the lights off the picture is clearer.
