"Skating with Celebrities"

Happened to catch Deborah Gibson on Tony Danza's show this a.m. She is going to be on this show. Apparently she is a pretty good ice skater. From the names she mentioned, I think I'll be interested to watch this show. All depends how they handle it, obviously.

Deborah Gibson is really impressive. She's very attractive, and very well-spoken. I hope this show doesn't disappoint. Doesn't seem as though it'll do that well compared to Dancing with the Stars, but it should pull in some decent ratings. And hopefully Scott Hamilton and Dorothy Hamill will see to it that it doesn't deteriorate into Fox-krapola.

ETA: shoot! forgot to say when/where it's on. Premiering January 18 on Fox. show info

I'm still thinking that this show is the best chance for a maiming/death on a reality TV show in a long time.

I mean we've had some pretty bad accidents with highly trained world class pair skaters.

One of the reasons she is my all time favorite celebrity crush!

As a retired competitive skater with plenty of coaching experience, I'm interested in this show...it airs during Lost, so I'll be taping it, but I'm definitely interested in seeing how it turns out. I've got mixed feelings about the show...Gotta be honest, I have lost some respect for the skaters that sold out. Yes, you have to make money, but this is kind of hokey.

I know all the celebrities have previous skating experience, but I'm not sure how much or what kind. Hockey experience will only keep you on your feet while your feet are on the ice, and it's not really a whole lot of help when spinning. Also, hockey players use baddifferent skating posture, which will hurt in footwork. People with figure skating experience from when they were younger shouldn't have too much trouble regaining spins (the muscle memory for spinning will kick in with not much work), but jumps are a little harder. Singles will be easy (as long as they were consistently landing all their singles when they skated), but unless they were doing triples when they quit, doubles could be hard to get back (that all depends on how long ago they quit, what shape they're in, and how consistent they were when they quit, I suppose). I'm guessing that pair lifts won't go above the shoulder, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem for anyone, although I fear for the female skaters left in the hands of the male celebrities.

Is anyone else watching since it's up against Lost?

DVR is taping both shows (how did I live before DVR) Not sure which I will watch live, if either.

I will be around to snark on it once I see it

I'll be watching out of morbid curiosity. After all the "injury" promos I'm curious to see how well they actually skate. (I can't even skate backwards, so I'd do pretty badly if I was on the show!!)

Yep. We're watching. Because of his schedule DH was having a tendancy to fall asleep during Lost, and it's one of his favorite shows. So, for insurance purposes, we're taping Lost and watching Idol and this. Less to miss if he fades away.

I'll be DVRing it to watch later in the week also out of morbid curiosity. This has disaster written all over it. Todd Bridges figure skating??? The thought leaves me ROFL. Leave it to Fox . . .

Maybe some of these has beens put extra insurance on themselves, so when they are injured they'll rake in some cash to keep them going until they make it onto one of the VH1 "Celebreality" shows.

Gotta say, Deborah Gibson and Kurt Browning weren't horrible. There are a lot of great skating names associated with this show. Could be this year's 'Dancing With The Stars'. Surprise hit.

After all these years, Tai Babilonia (sp?) still looks and skates fabulous. Oh, what could have been. But I have to say, just how much plastic surgery has Bruce Jenner endured over the past 30 years?

Why does it look like the celebs are putting forth an honest effort? Why does it seem like they care about the results? Why hasn't anyone crashed and burned on the big stage yet? Why isn't this svcking more?

Patience, Estee, we haven't seen Todd Bridges yet.

We just saw Todd Bridges. And he tried. And he seemed to care about what he was doing. And he wasn't all that certain on the ice, but he's only been doing this for a month and...

...I just remembered a Martin Mull line from Hollywood Squares.
'Remember the Great Folk Music Scare of the Seventies? That (censored) almost caught on.'

The scheduling may be a blessing. If not for Lost being in direct opposition, but with the Winter Olympics factored in -- this (censored) might catch on...

You know, if you really want this to go away, you could always write the summary !?!

Jillian Barberie and John Zimmerman were hot, hot, hot.

Really, how serious can this be if Nancy Kerrigan is involved? Scotty Hamilton and Dorothy Hamill only lend so much authenticity to this cheesefest.

I really enjoyed Kristy & Lloyd's program. I think the judges went easier on the first 2 pairs.

Of course that's just my opinion. I don't think they were the best, but they most certainly weren't the worst.

I've been a Brasseur & Eisler fan for years. I remember the first time I saw him it was in person at the Canadian Nationals many years ago and thinking he was a jerk. He does have a temper. But I grew to love him and Isabelle and their skating. They were just too damn cute together and he could toss her around like a rag doll.

I'm flipping back and forth between this and Lost, but now the commercials are synched, so I guess I'll have to wait until Lost is over to watch my tape. I'll add my comments after that...From the little that I've seen tonight, I'll have many, so I'll contain myself to a reasonable number .

Same here. I know there's sixty million technical flaws in every move -- maybe you should just write the summaries.

I second that, Estee. Waterdrop for the summaries! All in favor, say Aye!

If people are interested in reading them, I'd be glad to write summaries. I can't promise Estee's awesome level of snarkiness, but I'll try!

Go for it! I'll certainly read, and I'll bet I'm not the only one. And, not everything has to be snarky. Hard to snark on honest effort anyway.

I fifth. Motion carried.

You write the summaries (so we understand), and we'll add the snarky in our replies to you. It'll be interactive fun! I already liked hearing your view on Jillian's technique - it'll make us take notice of these things when we watch next time.

How many of these musical and costume choices would have been risked during the Olympics? Definitely not the Blues Brothers number or the unexpected return of James West.

Hey, you want serious skating? Wait until February! Until then, bring on the cheese.

The celebs are taking this very seriously, aren't they? I guess 'DWTS' changed everyone's attitude.

I'm confused.

I'm going to sit in the Bar and sort this out. Maybe after six or seven virtual drinks, FOX will start to svck again.

Hey, cool, this show must be good...it earned its own forum! (Oh, yeah, so did Martha's Apprentice...)

I love to watch figure skating, and wasn't sure how this show would be. But I was impressed with how well they did. And nobody fell down! I was pleasantly surprised. And I am glad they are not having the audience vote, because I don't think most of the public knows enough to adequately judge figure skating. And I am also glad they are giving them two performances before someone is axed.

I mean, do I see any MEN in here? Not. Interesting. You'd a thunk there'd be at least 1 or 2. Hope it was good! Duncecap here forgot to set the VCR.

Looks like John Niks is gonna be the 'simon' of the judges LOL.
I just wish they weren't going to be doing eliminations because I'd love to just to seeing these skaters skate till the end

Dorothy Hamill looks fabulous (as usual).

I enjoyed the show.
