American Icons night.

Guest Judge is Kenny Ortega. He's sitting between Len & Bruno (third score).

Each pair is dancing two full routines. No results to start out.

Thanks to tribephyl for the sigpic!

"Candace & Mark - Viennese Waltz"
Posted by udg on 05-12-14 at 09:07 PM
LAST EDITED ON 05-12-14 AT 09:08 PM (EST)

Filler gives us a Bible lesson.

Song: If I Knew

Some flubbing in the middle, and I could see Mark counting. She seemed pretty lost about 3/4 of the way through. (Why, oh, why is she still there with Danica gone?)

Scores: 8+9+9+8=34

Seems high.

ETA: And, she's safe.

"Safe!?!?!?!?!"
Posted by Sagebrush Dan on 05-12-14 at 11:13 PM
She should have gone home two episodes ago! Bah!

Before the break, we found out Candace & Mark are safe.

Now, the first couple in jeopardy is...

Amy & Derek.

Charlie & Sharna...

you are also in jeopardy, and you're up next.

Filler with Scott Hamilton!!! *squee* (Except after the 45 second Bible study with Candace's idol, we get a total of 3 words from S.H.)

Song: New York, New York

Cute little solo at the end. That made me smile.

Scores: 10+10+10+10=40

That was really very good! Too bad I peeked at the results already.
He does very well with the lighthearted dances.

"Amy & Derek - Quickstep"
Posted by udg on 05-12-14 at 09:31 PM
Wearing springy running legs instead of the wood & foam feet she's been using for the other dances.

Oprah is her icon guest. Not in person, but on the phone. "When you win, I'm taking you both out to dinner."

Song: You Can't Hurry Love

No attempt to disguise the artificial legs this time. (I got to explain to my youngest why her feet look like that.) Seriously impressive watching someone dance on them! I almost didn't notice that the hold was a little loose. Quickstep is one of my favorites, and I'm going to rewatch that when the ep is over! Another smile-inducing routine.

Len comments on posture & the lack of body contact.

Scores: 10+9+10+10=39

(Tom to Len: That booing was for you.)

Wonderful, but gotta agree with Len on this one. Their hold was not great.

I would not kick Amy out of bed for eating crackers. That woman is gorgeous!

Meryl & Maks: You are in jeopardy. ("And now they're booing me, Len.")

James & Peta: You're safe & dancing next. (Why even attempt to make that suspensful? Of course they're safe if you've already announced three couples in jeopardy.)

"James & Peta - Cha Cha"

L.A. Reid is his icon.

Song: Love Never Felt So Good (from new Michael Jackson album)

Scores: 10+10+10+10=40

That seemed high. DH was unimpressed by the (bad) moon walking. And I didn't think it was worthy of straight 10s either.

I liked a lot of it, but the moonwalk was lame — agree with your DH on that one.

"Meryl & Maks - Jive"
Posted by udg on 05-12-14 at 09:59 PM
Kristi Yamaguchi guest icon.

In practice Maks throws a temper tantrum & his mic. Meryl makes excuses for him again.

Song: Hound Dog

Maks kisses all the judges.

Scores: 10+10+10+10=40

Great dance, terrible outfit, and the shoes from hell. A jive in those clunkers? Gack!

I loved her outfit. The lack of unnecessary sparkle and shine meant that it didn't distract from how sexy Meryl is.

I found the colors unflattering. It did not need to be a flashy outfit, but I did not think the colors did her any favors.

Salute to classic Hollywood.

Song: Classic by MKTO

Overscored. zzzzz

"Charlie & Sharna - Samba"
Posted by udg on 05-12-14 at 10:11 PM
Song: Mo' Money, Mo' Problems

Scores: 9+9+9+9=36

Seriously? It didn't deserve perfect 10s, but it was WAY better than Candace.

Agree.

"Amy & Derek - Jazz"
Posted by udg on 05-12-14 at 10:16 PM
Song: Too Darn Hot

Too darn GOOD! (ROFL - I typed it, then Bruno said it!)

Scores: 9+10+10+10=39

That was amazing. Crossing and recrossing her legs in rhythm as she glided across the table. All of it. Amazing.

"James & Peta - Rumba"

Song: Islands in the Stream

Scores: 9+9+9+9=36

It was okay for me. Not as sexy as they thought it was.

"Meryl & Maks - Viennese Waltz"
Posted by udg on 05-12-14 at 10:25 PM
Song: Just a Fool

Stylistically, that seemed weird. Meryl is amazing, but that wasn't my favorite.

Scores: 10+10+10+10=40

Excellent work. Interesting insight on Carrie Ann's about athletes. There are so many reasons athletes tend to win these things, and that is one of them. That, and they're ability to take criticism, work hard, compete, etc.

"Elimination"
Posted by udg on 05-12-14 at 10:31 PM
Safe is... Amy & Derek. (Phew!)

(I did predict that splitting the Charlie & Meryl fan base would lead to premature elimination of one of them. Let's find out which one...)

Going home tonight... Charlie & Sharna.

"RE: Elimination"
Posted by Sagebrush Dan on 05-13-14 at 00:53 AM
I was really hoping that this would be April Fool's, and Candace would be going home.
Oh well.

"RE: Elimination"
Posted by Round Robin on 05-13-14 at 01:10 AM
You got that right, udg. No doubt in my mind that most of their fan base went with Meryl, and that means Charlie got screwed.
