"Character discussion thread"

Posted by PhoenixMons on 01-13-05 at 01:10 PM
I thought it would be useful, now that we're getting more info on each character, to have a thread where we can go just to discuss character development/storylines and any ideas we have about their pasts/futures.

I have a few ideas but it seemed silly to start separate threads for each characters because it would be too hard to keep up with that many individual threads. So...

I'll start a post for each character and then we can branch off from there, okay?

"What we know about Locke"
Posted by PhoenixMons on 01-13-05 at 03:14 PM
LAST EDITED ON 01-13-05 AT 03:15 PM (EST)

He was in Australia to go on an adventure/safari
He had some sort of accident that left him unable to walk (I believe this accident was 4 years ago)
He had a bunch of knives with him for his adventure
He was shown to have a job in which he worked in a cubicle
He knows how to play backgammon
He was the first (as far as we can tell) to 'see the island for what it was'
He is trying to get people on 'his side' for some reason
He thinks Sayid is a 'smart guy'
He has Boone, Charlie, and Walt on his 'side' (from what we can infer)
He (and Boone) are the only ones who know about the hatch
He does NOT know (or at least was not in the group of people who know) about Danielle and the transceiver/message
He seems to be similar to the philosopher John Locke in that he seems to believe in Tabula Rasa (letting go to start anew, perhaps, as a clean slate on the island)

He knows about Danielle (Sayid talked to him about "Danielle's map" last night) but he was not with the group that heard the transmission.

He is a somewhat capable hunter.

He had a romantic relationship with a "phone sex girl" that seems to be mostly only in his mind.

We do not know if he was ever married or ever had children.

A lovely creation by the lovely Syren

didn't he also make a rather assumptive comment about the maps too, like he knew they weren't any good? might have something to do with the beach that started to erode in a hurry.

He seems to be helping the others get passed their demons. Charlie and drugs, Boone and his attraction/dependence/whatever with Shannon, etc.

Locke seems to be creating a group of people that will follow and obey him (Charlie, Boone, Walk, Michael). Some type of tribe or gang or cult. Something like Jim Jones. So far all of his followers have been male. I wonder if he is doing this to challenge the doctor as leader of the survivors or create some type of civil war among the survivors

I don't know if I'd say that Michael is a "follower". Seems to me he has never trusted Locke (with the exception of saving Walt from the polar bear) and in fact tried to keep Walt away from Locke as much as possible. Did I miss something?

I worked for a high tech company selling to the DoD (Department of Defense) and something struck me about Locke when he mentioned he worked for a "box company". A euphemism for one of the spy agencies--NSA or CIA, can't remember which, but I think it was NSA--was BOX COMPANY (as in, "working for the box company".)

With his skills and knowledge he just had to have been working in a black agency.

Anyone else with knowledge in this area?

It wasn't the box company that burned down, it was the Canadian sneaker factory.

In last week's episode focusing on Hurley, there was a mention of some connection with Hurley and a box company (located in Tustin, CA if I heard right). But, my brain is mush and I can't remember. All I remember right now is that Mr. Reality and I looked at each other right after the utterance and I said, "Well, that blows the Locke/box company/NSA connection I had going on!"

I'm sure one of you will jog my memory. I still like my theory...at least in theory!

By far my favorite. IMDB list that his character is based on the English philosopher, not that IMDB hasn't made mistakes before.

His only friends before he left for Aus. were the ones he played Role playing games with. He also had an attachment to a phone sex operator named Helen, he used her more like a psychologist from the gist of the one conversation we heard, he passed her off at work as his girlfriend. Yes, he worked in a box company, his explanation in "Hearts and Minds", as a collections agent. I would guess it is the same box company Hurley now owns, I think I remember one of Locke's bosses saying something about new ownership.

He has an extensive knowledge on survival tactics bcuz he was going to Aus. for a "Walkabout", thus the name of the first Lockecenteric episode. He planned to live off the land for a few months like Crocodile Dundee, this would also explain all the different knives.

I believe before the Island he was socially inept, possibly married, then divorced or widowed, no kids, rough childhood, no military experience, coverts ops or otherwise. Since the island was his new start at life he wants to pass that opportunity on to others i.e. Charlie's heroin addiction, Boones problems with Shannon, Kate in general. I DO NOT THINK HE IS TRYING TO BUILD A FOLLOWING OR A CULT. He is just happy to feel needed and useful.

I will be adding more as his history becomes more detailed.

We learned a lot in Deus Ex Machina

* Locke's mother was in the same mental hospital as Hurley's numbers "friend" (Sorry, was his name Lenny?)

* Locke's real father manipulated Locke into donating a kidney to him. His father is quite wealthy.

* Locke's mother believed (?) he was adopted, but he actually was in several foster homes

* Locke was hit by a car, but not paralyzed

* Locke had hair ;)

* Locke worked at a toy store and Mousetrap was his favorite game

* Locke did not learn to hunt until he was an adult

Kate Ryan AKA Annie and Maggie, Kate may not be her real name either.

Is the middle of a love trinagle between Jack and Sawyer.

I believe she may be a military brat, moved from place to place when she was younger, but spent a good amount of time in Washington state, where her father taught her how to track, possibly hunt and shot, although I would assume that would be with rifles.

Gemini, the twin. Some spec she may have a twin somewhere, even going as far to connect her to Alias. That seems really far fetched.

I’m not sure of the exact words, but the gist of the conversation was that the girlfriend asked why he chose to take the job from her dad if he was just planning on stealing from her. Charlie said he wanted to be respectable and he wanted to be able to take care of her. She replied that he would never be able to take care of anyone…

This of course provides a lot of the motivation for Charlie’s attitude/devotion to Claire. He is trying to prove that he is capable of caring for someone besides himself. Even to the point of killing Ethan for Claire.

You know, I am not sure what else could be shown about Charlie's past that could really enhance his character much. Maybe some stuff before he was in the confessional ready to quit driveshaft, but not much else, unless they want to start a new storyline. I think all of his character developement is going to be tied into Claire and her baby. They could do flashbacks to when he was kidnapped as well.

Which leads me to another thought, how long will they use the flashbacks as a tool to create story line. Yes, there are some gaping holes in certain peoples stories, Kate is the first to come to mind, but now I am wandering.

Frankly, I don't think this guy's bad at all. If I were stuck on the island with him, I wouldn't be making scornful faces at him like everyone else is, I would make friends. i don't think it'd be hard at all. I'd just be nice, and stop assuming he's a pig. The reason he's acting like a pig is because people approach him with the attitude that he IS one. Just like with the inhalers. If Boone had just gone to him, stated the problem, asked him nicely-- I doubt ANY of that would have happened.

Weird things happen around Walt. His stepfather was 'afraid' of him, and didn't want him. He's a pretty strong-willed kid.

My interpretation is that what Walt pictures is what happens. When he was demanding his parents' attention and they were preoccupied, a bird crashed into the window and died. It was evidently the same bird that he had been looking at in his textbook moments before. Then there's the polar bear appearing, twice. the 'odd' thing is that the polar bear Walt conjured up (if indeed he did so) chased HIM down, rather than going after the object of his ire (at that time his father). That's kind of a relief, in a way. It would seem a bit too obvious if Walt conjured up monsters that went after whoever he was currently mad at. And it would present Walt as one of those crazy-scary horror movie brats with malevolent power they can't control-- and that's just been done to death.

I can't believe I'm the first to post this. Was there a blackout or something?

i'm guessing he just thot it. he seems to be a good kid, and i don't think he'd walk up and set it aflame...but he didn't seem too remorseful when confronted by locke. maybe he's starting to realize he has 'powers' and can use them.

Agree. Not sure really if he did this on purpose. If I suddenly thought that I was "affecting" things around me, but didn't know how to control it, I'd be scared.

I really don't think he does speak English.
I really liked Jin in this last episode; the interaction between him and Hurley was beyond comic relief, it was great exposition. He's, imo, showing himself to be more of the man that gave Sun a flower and was willing to do anything to make her happy. It makes him a bit more tragic as well, though. After all, this guy became a hitman so he could make a life for himself and Sun.

    Not an assassin.

Lied about his father's death because he was ashamed of father being a fisherman.

He's a compassionate man, risked his own life to save the factory inspectors(?)
Dreamed of opening a restaurant and owning a hotel.
Gave up his relatively simple dreams so he could marry Sun.
Was going to flee Sun's father, with Sun, in America.
Was raised by a -charming-, earthy, simple, and wise father.

i admit i haven't seen every minute of every episode, but i don't recall there being any flashbacks on hurley. is that right? if so, isn't he the ONLY main character without them? could be coming soon (as walt/michael just had their fill), but why would they save his background for so long?

Thinks the numbers that won him the lottery are cursed.

-Got the #'s from a fellow patient while he was in a psych hospital. The patient got the #'s from a radio transmission that he heard at a listening station while in the South Pacific with another person(can't remember why they were at the listening station). The #'s were repeated over and over. The #'s weren't supposed to used according to the patient and said they would bring bad luck. The patient is still in the psych hospital.

-Hurley went to find the other man who was station at the listening station. That man(can't remember name) lived in Australia with his wife. That man committed suicide when "bad things" began to happen after he won an impossible guessing game using the #'s.

-Danielle is the first person to believe those #'s are cursed, like Hurley. Danielle seems to like Hurley. She gave him the battery they needed.

-Those #'s appear on the mysterious hatch.

After watching Hurley's ep., I'm starting to believe that Hurley has a very important part to this story.

    * operated on someone while drunk and the person died
    * was angry with Jack for ratting him out
    * fled to Australia
    * wanted to apologize to his family but said he couldn't bring himself to do it because he was "weak"
    * urged Sawyer to do what he had to do in order ease his mind...said something to the effect of "unless you want to turn out like me", which sent Sawyer off to kill the "fake Sawyer"

Yesterday I was catching up on all the spoilers regarding the major cast member to be killed later and how 'moving' it will be. Then I watched the show and saw the look in Sawyer's eye at the end. They want us to think he'll use it against Jack, but maybe Sawyer's last breath is spent reconciling a family when his whole life was spent destroying them.

Posted by PhoenixMons on 02-17-05 at 01:50 PM
I don't think he will use it against Jack at all. Sawyer is not a bad guy, IMO, he's just had to endure a whole lot of stuff and he's built up this tough exterior as a defense mechanism.

I don't know about the last breath thing since I don't think Sawyer is the one to kick the bucket, but it would certainly make sense and tie things up (except for the Kate-Sawyer-Jack love triangle). It would also work the other way around...in that he reveals this info to Jack just before Jack dies.

    Got blog?

    Posted by J I M B O on 02-17-05 at 04:03 PM
yes, sawyer definitely provides more in-camp drama than jack...so for the sake of storylines i agree that jack could go over sawyer. don't know if they'd want to eliminate the doc though...however, i used to think the same thing about "outback" john locke.

    "RE: I agree"
Posted by DRONES on 02-28-05 at 10:23 PM
If these characters died it would diminish the show:
Jack: camp dr. and de-facto leader
Kate: The only real strong female presence on the show
Locke: man of mystery and knowledge
Sawyer: resident "bad boy" gives the best antogonist to Jack
Walt: only kid(that we know of). seems to have some special abilities

If anybody other than those was killed, died or whatever it wouldn't negatively affect the show. I know there are a number of Charlie fans out there but he does not hold the importance that those above do. The list could be subject to change with twists.

Who is Edward Mars? His name appears on the seating chart (27G). The credits say that the Marshal is played by Fredric Lehne as Fredric Lane. Kate's seat is 27H. I'm confused. Anyone have thoughts on this?

If you read the summaries, he is never called by name. Only "the marshal."

The Marshal reacts with an elbow to her face and Kate goes down. The Marshal looks to a stunned security officer who never even had time to get out of his chair. "That," the Marshal says, "is why I need five guns."

    As seen HERE.

Fredric Lehne played the Marshal in six episodes. So it appears he was referred to as self. Not necessarily that he was playing himself.

Wouldn't Kelvin have had a partner before Desmond? That was never mentioned, right? The film said there would be two people and you should switch so you'd always be fresh to enter the numbers.

I know there was some speculation that Sam, the dead guy in Austraila that Hurley tried to visit or Lenny, Hurley's friend in the mental hospital could have been one of the button pushers.

It's probably nothing, but remembering to enter those numbers every 108 minutes and worrying about what would happen if you forgot could make you crazy.

Yep, he would have had a partner. If one of the two connected to Hurley were that partner, one has to wonder how and why they were able to leave the project.
