This episode is Kate-centric, which is good cuz we need some female hotness to offset Sawyer's shirtlessness.Episode 5.4: "The Little Prince"
Guest starring: Rebecca Mader as Charlotte Lewis, Susan Duerden as Carole Littleton, Tom Irwin as Dan Norton, William Blanchett as Aaron, Emerson Brooks as Tony, Stephanie Niznik as Dr. Evelyn Ariza, Melissa Farman as young Frenchwoman, Guillaume Dabinpons as Frenchman #1, Marc Menard as Frenchman #2, Bruno Bruni as Frenchman #3 and Ane Tranetzki as bellman.
Kate discovers that someone knows the secret of Aaron's true parental lineage. Meanwhile, the dramatic shifts through time are placing the lives of the remaining island survivors in extreme peril.
You've been hotpocketed!
I am staring at the flying hot pocket, hypnotized. How did the guy playing Ben not even flinch! Actig! Thank you!Oooh what's with all the frenchmen and women in the synopsis?
I watched the pilot last night. All the old episodes I am keeping an eye on Sawyer, Locke and Rose as they are 3 originals that are currently "skipping".
![]()
You've been hotpocketed!
Rose is skipping? What about Bernard? Or, as the Canadians would say, what aboot Bernard? Is he skipping, too?
You've been hotpocketed!
Why wouldn't rose and bernard be skipping too? They're 815ers, so there's no reason to think they wouldn't be.
Interesting about french characters in this ep, I wonder if we're gonna flash to a point when Danielle's crew was on the island.-----------------------------------------
Have you ever imagined a world with no hypothetical situations?
Yes but Bernard was not in the first season!Skip to me loo baybee!

This is never gonna get old.
LAST EDITED ON 02-05-09 AT 01:15 AM (EST)wouldn't Rose and Bernard be dead. Didn't the Others kill everyone but, Locke, Sawyer, Juliet, Daniel, Charlette and the Asian guy whose name I can't think of right now
Miles. Or Niles. I was never certain but then neither was he.No, Rose and Bernard aren't most certainly dead, we just don't know yet the fate of all of those who ran for the hills.
LAST EDITED ON 02-04-09 AT 10:22 PM (EST)Jin!
Oh Sawyer...I felt for you. So heartbreaking!
Ok at first I thought it was Charlie and Shannon playing the roles of the French people.I thought the outrigger canoe was the O6's at first and they were in the future. But then why would they be shooting.
More tomorrow!
I have to admit, the new younger Danielle, not so sexy as I thought she should be. Still and all, if this portends that we finally get that backstory, yeah! It's about time.
Exactly! Very much looking forward to that... Hopefully they don't skip around a lot.Does anyone know if Danielle and Jin ever met in 2004?
LAST EDITED ON 02-05-09 AT 06:37 PM (EST)I'm not sure there is much more to know about Danielle: Her crew will all die of the island sickness which we know is due to the time shifts. Her babie will be stolen by the Others and she'll go in hiding until the Losties stumble into her. Why didn't she get the sickness is about the only thing we don't know.
And yes, I'm pretty sure Jin met Danielle when she spent time with the Losties before they went to the tower to send a signal to the freighter.
I thought Jin recognized Danielle's name and looked rather shocked - he doesn't know yet that the island is skipping around in time.
Jin and Danielle have had virtually no connection until now. She was known about and briefly visited the camp, but the language barrier kept them apart. In any event, did her crew really go nuts, did she really end up killing them all, what? She was so nutso by the time Sayid found her that she contradicted herself, it will be interesting to find out what really happened.
Loved it.....but I'll wait for others to watch to ask question...

Not much until the last 5 minutes of the episode!Jin!!!!
I agree with Dabo, I expected younger Danielle to be a little more attractive and not so babyish looking.
Same here but then I thought about living on your own in the jungle for 15 years.....that would change you like Tom Hanks in Cast Away..Limited food, limit movement (avoiding the monster and the Others), etc.

I thought it was Shannon in a wig.
Told'ya that Jin was floating around the ocean. Toldya so!Back to that hotness known as the French crew. Meow. Did you see those boys. Saywer'd better watch out.
Do we not have a problem now? By meeting Danielle, Jin is going to screw up the future. Can he warn her about the Other's taking Alex?

LAST EDITED ON 02-05-09 AT 09:17 AM (EST)Then that answers that only people on the water surrounding the island and the island are being skipped through time since the helo with the O6 did not and it was nearer to the island than the freighter which blew up. But it does not answer why the fire could not be seen by James and Doc on the beach after the first jump.

Jin could have been blown closer to the island than the others. He was on the end of the boat. He was floating on wreckage of it. The rest of the boat could have been just out of range.
I think the boat doesn't skip because it is a thing and not a person. The same way the Losties' camp didn't skip.![]()
I can't remember it, I read it a million years ago. But "The Little Prince" is a book "Le Petit Prince" about a little boy that lives on a tiny little planet. I don't remember much but that his most prized possession is a red rose.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Little_Prince
Very interesting read especially the bit about the 6 leaders and also the snake bite.
LAST EDITED ON 02-05-09 AT 02:39 PM (EST)That was interesting reading. Another literary reference that can be applied to the Losties.
I think Jin is Le Petit Prince - wandering around in search of the other Losties. If he is, that means he won't meet up with everyone until next season, shortly before the island is "rescued!"
ETA: It could also be Aaron separated from his mom.
The name of the French team's boat was besixdouze. B612 was the name of the Little Prince's planet.
1. The big reveals weren't too surprising. The French peeps clearly had to be Danielle's crew. (Man, the island was rough on her looks!) The person trying to get Aaron seemed likely to be Ben trying to scare Kate into going back to the island. Jin showing up wasn't a shock; most viewers probably knew he was going to reemerge.2. What intrigued me was the implication that a long time spent on the island=nosebleeds. There's already been speculation that Miles might be the child of Dr. Candle. Charlotte obviously has some connection to the island. Juliet has been there awhile. But why don't Ben or Richard or other Others exhibit the nosebleeds? I'm still mulling that one over.
3. Who did those boats belong to? Was there another plane crash with survivors, or were those the Others? WHEN was that?
4. Going back to the first season, I wonder what Locke saw when he looked into the eye of the island? Or, maybe, WHEN Locke saw when he looked into the eye of the island? Did he see himself much like Sawyer saw Kate?
You've been hotpocketed!
2. Yeah I have no idea on this one.3. Have you checked Ajira Airways website? It's been up about 2 months or so. It could other "tourists".
4. I think this is correct. I also wonder about when he was dragged by the "monster" into that hole in Season 1. Where first he told Jack to let him go, then he said no help or something like that. I remembered this because the previews show them around a well with heavy chains and that is what it sounded like if I recall back then. Another instance of Locke seeing himself?
The nosebleed thing intrigued me too. And Daniel - who has time-traveled to the island - hasn't spent enough time there to have been over-exposed to the radiation (is that what he called it?). I think Miles is Dr. Chang's son we saw last week.I consider Richard an anomaly because he doesn't age, but it would seem that Ben should get nosebleeds too (unless because he is "special" the island's restorative powers protect him.)
See now here is a question...why would Ben get nosebleeds at all? He is not on the island. The island does not time travel all the time that we were shown. The wiki page of The Little Prince talks of how this Prince spends his time pulling up trees that try to take root(Dharma, US Army, plane crash survivers) or else if they do take root the planet dies. I think the Hostiles or those that are meant to be on the island are like this. Those that are meant to be there are needed to stay there. While those that aren't(maybe you could say they are "not on the list") are used and then let go. Is Ben on the list? Is Locke? He wasn't previously
Maybe those that are not proven yet have to go on a "walkabout" out in the real world before they can come back? Also you think that the spider venom that paralyzed Nikki and Paolo is what they use on Locke? Is it the same venom in those darts that the Other's use? They mentioned last night that Sayid was out for 42 hours!
Ahh so much again. I think we need a theory thread soon.1. Locke actually sounded like he lost a little faith last night when he was talking about the hatch light. It was just a light.
2. I'm wondering if Widmore and Ben are on the same side. Not really together but kind of working together to get people in play.
3. I think there have been tons of "Others" in the O6's and other plane crash people lives.
Jack's wife Sarah
Nadia
Hurley's dad
Walt's mom
Claire's psychic
Pilot and crew of Oceanic
Just some off the top of my head. There are a lot of people willing to die for this island.4.Ajira Airlines. Front for Other's? Were the Other's, Kate and SAwyer builing a runway for it when they were on Hydra Island?
5. Mirror images. Kate/Sawyer and Jack/Juliet. Kate and Sawyer past criminals. Jack and Juliet both doctors with nephews and a sister "in trouble".
6. When the O6 come back do they come back to where the island is currently skipping? Would they be in the same time period as the ones left behind?
7. I am leaning more and more to the event that they have to change has to do with the Swan Hatch. Maybe when Desmond turned the failsafe. The hatch has been featured prominently in these first few episodes. Down to even being shown where it no longer is. I think that Locke is right, it is a sign, not just a light.
8. I also think Daniel saying that they can't change things is what "The Lie" was about.
7. This needs to be discussed and theorized more. I agree, the hatch sure has been in play alot these episodes. What if pushing that button kept the island from skipping?
I bet it is something like that. Remember when Ben was being held in the Swan? He seemed like he really did not know what was going there with the button. (I know it's Ben and he could have). But he was willing to tease Locke about it and even not push it. The button might have always been pushed when the Island had previously moved so he would not have known about the skipping when he did it.By not pushing the button then moving the island it was different than when the island had been moved before maybe without all these side effects.
Gah, I'm too long winded.
3. I think there have been tons of "Others" in the O6's and other plane crash people lives.
Jack's wife Sarah
Nadia
Hurley's dad
Walt's mom
Claire's psychic
Pilot and crew of OceanicBy Others, do you mean they've been on the Island or know about the Island?
4.Ajira Airlines. Front for Other's? Were the Other's, Kate and SAwyer builing a runway for it when they were on Hydra Island?
I haven't looked at the website. Interesting thought about the runway--I had forgotten about it. What purpose would the front be--to transport peeps to the Island?
5. Mirror images. Kate/Sawyer and Jack/Juliet. Kate and Sawyer past criminals. Jack and Juliet both doctors with nephews and a sister "in trouble".
Interesting. Darlton have talked about the importance of twins or yin/yang in interviews.
7. I am leaning more and more to the event that they have to change has to do with the Swan Hatch. Maybe when Desmond turned the failsafe. The hatch has been featured prominently in these first few episodes.
Good thought. I'm willing to buy that argument.
8. I also think Daniel saying that they can't change things is what "The Lie" was about.
Hmm. Why is Daniel lying, though? What would be his motivation? I'm thinking he might be even more important than I thought.
You've been hotpocketed!
3. Like Ben and Widmore Others. They have been on the island. Kate's stepfather is another one. I think at some point all these people have been "missing" as well. Add the Lotto girl too!Aslo since I just rewatched the pilot episode I see they kept mentioning events that happened to themselves 4 years prior to the crash. We still don't know what that means!
In fact I might even think that Oceanic 815 was a flight that was people trying to "get back to the island" with Christian just like the O6 are now trying.
4. Could be a way of transporting them. Remember all the games throughout the series? Mousetrap? A game about finding a very convuluted way to trap your prey?
8. He is working for Widmore
Or maybe he himself wants the island for himself? I dunno. He said it most likely so that they won't be going around changing everything maybe? A nudge here and there might not hurt.
LAST EDITED ON 02-05-09 AT 02:08 PM (EST)2. I've wondered if they were working together, but Widmore did order the soldiers to kill Alex, Ben's daughter. That seems like enemies to me.
7. I like this theory. I never felt like they fully explained why the button had to be pushed to save the island, but then the people on the island were okay after the hatch blew.
ETA: and mrc, I think Daniel is going to be very key. He may know what happened/happens because of his time travel and can help The Others and the Losties right everything.
And P.S. "Time travel's a bitch!"
![]()
2. And don't forget Ben pledged to kill Widmore's daughter when he was standing in his bedroom. I don't think they're working together, but they may have a common purpose.

You've been hotpocketed!
Michel - did you catch if the French people said anything of interest?
Good point. I may have to visit another website to find out what they were saying.
You've been hotpocketed!
Michel is French Canadian so I was hoping to get him to do the work! But let us know if you find anything. I'm sure it's out there.
À votre service, ma chère!Here is what I could make out of the conversations. (The rain made some comments inaudible) The first comment was the most interesting.
1st man: - "On n'aurait jamais dû suivre tes maudits chiffres"
(We shouldn't have followed your damn numbers)2nd man: - "C'est à cause de ce connard"
(It's because of that fool)3rd man: Je vous l'ai déjà dit; les instruments ont mal fonctionnés"
(I've already told you; the instruments didn't work properly)Danielle: "Un homme à la mer!"
(A man at sea!)- 1st man: "Mais... je pensais qu'on était tous là"
(But... I thought we were all here)- 3rd man: "On est tous là. Il n'est pas des nôtres"
(We are all here. He's not one of us)- "Qui est-ce?" (who is he?)
- "Pagayez" (row)
- "On va droit sur lui" (we're headed straight for him)
Danielle - "Allez! Dépéchez-vous" (Hurry up)
- 1st man: "Il n'y a que lui. Pas de bateau, rien pour nous aider".
(He's alone. No boat, nothing that could help us)- 2nd Man: "Merde! Ça ne nous avance pas."
(Sh*t! That does us no good)- 3rd man: "Ta gueule"
(Shut up)- "Il est lourd... Il respire encore."
(He's heavy... He's still breathing."Then we see Jin and cut to commercial.
On the beach, we hear 4-8- on the radio and the first man says:- "Le signal vient de l'île"
(The signal comes from the island)- 2nd man: "As-tu déterminé la source?"
(Have you determined the source?)
- Bien sûr que oui. Regarde"
(Of course. Look)
- Tu crois qu'elle est habitée?"
(Do you think it is inhabited?)Then they see that Jin is awake. Danielle speaks to him in English but there is one last comment in French that is fun. It happens as Danielle scolds the first man and we learn his name:
- "Mouton!! Il est en état de choc. On a de l'eau à lui donner?"
(Mouton!! He's in shock. We have water to give him?)Mouton = Sheep as in "Le Petit Prince"
Merci Michel
Merci beaucoup mon ami. Vous êtes le meilleur!I loved the bit about the damned numbers. It also seems to imply that they weren't headed for the Lost island but for someplace else.
I'm willing to bet that the '06ers fly Ajira Airways to get back to the island. The airline's tag line is "destiny calls".Speaking of... do you think it was the '06ers in the water shooting at Sawyer and the other time travelers? I have no idea why they would be shooting at them though.
Was a ho-hum episode for me. Not as compelling as the first 3 but ok.1. Was ho-hum until the appearance of Jin (basically with 10 minutes left). I knew Jin was going to surface at some point, but I wasn't expecting it to be him... the guy looked like Sawyer at first and I thought why is Sawyer there?
2. Not a surprise that Ben hired that lawyer... most likely to scare Kate into action.
3. Sun doesn't appear to be as attractive now that she is a baddie.
4. I heard about the French people going to be in the episode and I thought Danielle but then I was thrown off because they were so young and then the light went on when I saw the pregnant woman.
5. I think that Danielle had said that she was part of a group of scientists/researchers when she first came to the island, but don't they look a little too young?
6. If they are mere scientists/researchers... why the sketchy behaviour? What's with the guns?
7. Is Jin in the same time period as Locke and Co.?
8. How is Jin able to be moving through time when apparently the ship was outside of the radius? However, weird things were happening on that ship (people going crazy) when it was anchored.
9. If everyone has to go back to the island to make things right, does that include Walt? What about Michael? He is supposedly dead and therefore is off the hook, but if Jin survived there is a possibility that Michael could be alive and would have to return to the island as well.
10. Did Locke and Co. jump into the future? The camp looked like it had been deserted for a long time. Maybe Ben & Co. are the ones that arrived on the long boats? (I don't know why they would be shooting at them.)

I share the love for this episode for the most part, despite its lack of Hugo (one quick scene is not enough!). When I saw Jin I said YAY and got up and did a little dance. Now I'll rain on the parade
No one has mentioned how ridiculous Ben's custody suit against Kate was-I know, he was just using it to get Kate to go back to the island. But she's always been a hard sell about that, especially since Claire's visitation when she told her "don't you dare take him back" or something like that. Push came to shove what could Ben do to prove he is related to Aaron and should be his rightful guardian? Gah, it just seemed really stupid to me. That lawyer was all over the place, wasn't he?
It does appear that Sun really is intending to kill Ben based on the preview. News of Jin turns that around, no doubt, because without Ben how would they all get back?
Can't wait for next episode!
"Push came to shove what could Ben do to prove he is related to Aaron and should be his rightful guardian?"Not Ben himself but the fact that Claire's mother dealt with Ben's lawyer wasn't a coincidence. Ben will use her to force Kate if it comes to that.
I didn't think of that! Thanks!
I can't take credit for this catch, read it elsewhere. The name on the side of Ben's van, "Canton Rainier" is an anagram of "reincarnation.
LAST EDITED ON 02-05-09 AT 08:16 PM (EST)
As others have said, this wasn't a big episode.- Seeing Jin was the biggest part of the episode but we had figured that he was probably still alive. I believe that he skipped in unisson with Locke and his group. So, Locke would be in the same time-frame as Danielle and Jin.
- We had figured that Ben was behind the law-suit. I started to feel disappointed when it appeared that Claire's mother was behind it (not someone else with an agenda) but then I realized she was part of Ben's plan. I'm still amazed at the ressources the Others have.
How much does it cost to have a high-powered attorney do all your work like that?
On the same note: How much did Ben have to pay killers to go after Sayid with only darts?- Now, we know that Charlotte was on the island longer than Miles who, in turn, has spend more time on the island than Juliette because that was the sequence of the nose-bleeds.
- Myles as Dr. Candle's son looks good.
- Where does Charlotte fit in? Maybe Ben saved her by sending her off the island before killing Dharma.
- Why doesn't Ben get nosebleeds? Maybe some people are more sensitive to time-shift. Daniel did say that it affected people's internal clock and not all clocks are wired the same. Or maybe Ben knows all about the importance of having a Constant.
- I wonder how much the story will be influenced by St-Exupery's Little Prince? The candleman in that story reminds me a lot of Desmond pushhing the numbers. Ben appeared in the desert just like the Little Prince. The Little Prince had to die to get back to his planet. The little Prince should be Aaron but it could signal the return of Walt. The idea behind the book that the important things are only seen by the heart could be something Locke would say. Also, Jacob isn't seen with "ordinary" eyes. Is he the sheep inside the box?
Why doesn't Ben get nosebleeds? Maybe some people are more sensitive to time-shift. Daniel did say that it affected people's internal clock and not all clocks are wired the same. Or maybe Ben knows all about the importance of having a Constant. Why would Ben get nosebleeds? He is not on the island nor as far as I can tell time traveling.
Also I don't think a constant is needed here. As far as we have seen they have been physically time jumping, not consciousness jumping like Desmond. They only mentioned the need for a constant in that episode "The Constant".
Danielle's people dying shows that the sickness was present before this set of time-shift started. There was a man on the freighter who also had nose-bleeds. And Ben had to feel something after he turned the wheel.
Well at this point we don't know for sure that Desmond/Minowski's problem, the current nose bleed problem and Danielle's Crew's Sickness are all the same thing.
-----------------------------------------
Have you ever imagined a world with no hypothetical situations?
Forgotten what Danielle said about her crew? That they got sick and died or went crazy and died?If Danielle's crew died of time sickness, wouldn't that mean someone turned the donkey wheel to move the island? Who? Widmore? Is that how he got off the island? And why?
Still not sure how the time sickness works. Appears as someone noted earlier that there are different versions. If the longer you are on the island the more suseptible you are, why did Minkowski get it? Didn't he just travel to the island once? Why not the mercenaries or Frank the pilot?
Radiation exposure. They said he was exposed to high levels of exposure.
Now that I've watched the episode, I have nothing to add, other than to say that I'm enjoying reading everyone's theories and comments.
Oh yeah, Kate looked unusually hot at the end of the episode.
