I hope missmyth and the rest of you don't mind if I start a thread for her post in the Dec. 1st episode thread. She has started a very good thought process on an article that is in next week's TV Guide discussing the meaning of the people's names.

This could be a good in-depth discussion and I didn't want to keep it hidden in the other thread. I also was afraid others might not find it since we are going to have another show tonight!

First of all, I am soooo happy to have found a place to discuss Lost where there are some really interesting theories and insights. Thank you.
I found this episode to be so good, with it's spooky elements and mind games. No sooner had I watched my tape of this show (with all the emphasis on names)than next weeks TV Guide arrived. Here's an brief on the show.

What’s in a Name? So the Frenchwoman with the 16-year-long distress signal is alive and living on the island and she’s named Danielle Rousseau. Is her surname a nod to 18th-century philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau? “That’s exactly who we named her after,” admits Lost cocreator Damon Lindelof. Makes sense. Rousseau believed in the noble savage, the idea that humans were good and equal in the state of nature but were corrupted by property, science and commerce. Adds Lindelof, “Every single name on the show has purpose and meaning.” But of course! – Nerina Rammairone

Makes you go back and start looking harder at everybody. Reading a biosketch on 17th century philosopher John Locke for example may give some insights into our island Locke's behavior. Have we ever heard Jack and Kate's last names? And who can tell us what meanings Sayid may have?
