...less than 18 hours!
Are we all READY?!!

I know I am!

Doc is our resident "Live-Feed Host"!
I would love to serve as the "Pre-Show Hostess"!

What we know so far -

1.) "Rutherford" is a very pertinent name. Not only to Boone and Shannon, but to Jack as well.
2.) Hurley's "numbers" are getting more relevant.
3.) Jack's past seems to not only be interesting, but very crucial!
4.) Walt is not on the island... but IS!
5.) Locke is getting creepier!
6.) Sayid seems to be fading into the background.
(THIS one really kept me up at night...)
7.) There's a hatch. Why the HELL did only THREE people go to it?!! I mean, CARP!!! If there was this monumental find on an island I was stranded on, you wouldn't be able to KEEP me from it!!! I'd be there in a heartbeat, regardless of what Dr. Jack said!

Wow!
I love this show soooo much!

If you all like this, I would LOVE to do it every week!

A huge recarp and then we see Sawyer in the water and he finds a floating portion of the raft and he gets on it. He splashes over to where Michael was and he pulled him from under the water up on the raft. I could hear Jin in the background.

But we have now digressed back to when Kate fell into the hatch and Locke is beginning to lower himself down.

Sawyer saved Micheal and the back story is of him. He is at a lawyers office and the lawyer is telling him that his ex is asking for him to give up all rights of fatherhood to Walt.

Back on the raft Sawyer is trying to calm Michael down as he is shouting for Walt.

Locke entered the hatch and took off his shoes so he wouldn't make any noise walking around. Locke is really looking the place over as he opens a set of blinds and I can't tell what is "outside". He hears Kate and goes to her. The man with the gun appears and asks, "Are you him?"

Sawyer is screaming for Jin but he doesn't answer. Now Michael is telling Sawyer it is his fault Walt is gone because he fired the flare.

A huge noise comes from under the boat...SHARK!

The guy in the hatch asks Locke if he is "him" and Locke says yes. However it was just Locke playing like he knew what the man was talking about. The guy points them deeper in the hatch as Locke notices marks on the wall as if someone had been counting the days.

Locke tells the guy that Kate is a fugitive and Locke is a box man so the guy tells Locke to tie up Kate. Locke then puts her in a closet.

Since the man in the hatch is Desmond, I'm assuming "him" is Jack but what was the question Desmond asked Locke to make him realize that Locke isn't "him?" I couldn't understand what he asked. Anyone?

"The Question"

I'd like to know this too. It sounded like the set up to a really corny joke: "What did one soldier say to another one?" (The real question probably isn't even close to this, but that's what it sounded like).

A friend of mine, said that he recalled Hurley asking this question or some variation of it sometime last season on the island to break the mood..

The answer was "Freeze" and it was just a joke.

So, his suspicion is that Hurley is the guy Des is looking for.

Sawyer tells Michael that the boat that was used wasn't built for the ocean and that it came from somewhere close by like the island. Sawyer says they were after Walt all along. They are arguing over what happened and why and Sawyer's little raft falls apart and he has to swim over and get on the one with Michael.

The "closet" that Locke pushed Kate into is loaded with food and has an air conditioning duct. Kate steals a handful of candy bars and goes thru the duct.

Desmonde asks Locke how many has gotten sick and then an alarm sounds that Kate has escaped.

Desmonde tells Locke to sit down and type something into the computer...it is the numbers and then he tells him to press execute. He does and the number 108 appears above the computer screen and then Jack arrives.

"RE: T Minus ..."
Posted by FFantasyFX on 09-28-05 at 09:33 PM
At first I thought it was an alarm to indicate that either Kate had escaped or Jack had broken in, but now I'm not too sure. The number display connected to the display has five digits connected to it, right? Three in white, and then two in red? I know that it previously had another number on it, but the computer did turn to 108 00 after Locke put the numbers in and pressed execute.

"RE: T Minus ..."
Posted by WaterDrop on 09-28-05 at 09:45 PM
I'm thinking that it's a clock that counts down...he has to enter the numbers every 108 minutes (or something) to reset it, and it counts down. The red numbers could represent seconds, and if it reaches 000 00, something bad happens? Did anyone see what it said at any other time?

Just a theory off the top of my head...

Jack enters and we get to the point where we left off last week and we get morphed to the ocean as Sawyer sees a huge chnk of the raft. Their portion of the raft starts falling apart as we see the shark below just as Sawyer attempts to swim to the other chink of boat. Sawyer gave Micheal the gun and told him to shoot the shark if he sees him and he does just as Sawyer made the bigger chunk of raft.

The Others look suspicously like the zombies in Resident Evil 4. Subtle cross promotion, I bet.

Why did Desmound make John Lock type in the numbers? Is there a plane flying by? Also why did Lock take off his shoes when entering the main room? Also what is the symbol on everything in the Hatch?

"RE: T Minus ..."
Posted by TeamJoisey on 09-28-05 at 11:11 PM
The numbers need to be typed in before the digital countdown reaches zero. The alarm went off and we saw it counting down by seconds with 2:38 remaining. Locke took off his shoes so he would not be heard walking.

The symbol on everything is a swan, with what appears to be the word Dharma.

Here's a frame grab>

thanks for the grab!

my son insists that it is a snake--hard to tell. is the clock set for 108 minutes or 108 hours? the last time the alarm went off the man (Desmond maybe?--although he seemed much cleaner and put together) had time to work out, shower, and shoot up, which could take less time, but 108 minutes isn't very long.

Edited to say that I can see a snake, as well, but believe it to be a swan for now.

As to the clock...

We get three shots of the "clock" display, which is the old "flip-numbers" style.

First, in successive seconds...

Then, after Locke types the numbers and hits execute, the numbers roll...

And finally stop here:

To me, this indicates 108 minutes and zero seconds remaining.

And I'm theorizing that Desmond has been in the hold for quite some time, never getting more than 105 minutes of sleep before that alarm wakes him. Sleep deprivation has made him more than a little edgy.

I've looked on the Internet for Apollo chocolate bars, to no avail.

Did anyone recognize the packaging? Or do you think it was created by the production team to provide another anacronism from the 1968-75 era?

The Logo is a take off on the Bagua

We use it in Tai Chi (the 8 symbols around the edge corrospond to 8 movements known as the 8 gates. There is another internal Art Baguazhang which uses that symbol even more heavily). The eight trigrams are combined together to form the 64 symbols of the I Ching.

108 is a magical number in China (and India I find) http://www.rudraksha-ratna.com/articledt.php?art_id=107 has info about this number.. Boone had Chinese numbers on his t-shirt (eight four if I recall correctly)

Somehow I do not think this is all an accident

"RE: T Minus ... Bagua/Island"

Can anyone tie the meaning of the Bagua to the island?

"RE: T Minus ... Bagua/Island"
Posted by Snidget on 09-29-05 at 09:11 AM
Well it is a basis of explaining all that exists in chinese cosmology (From Wuji (nothingness, stillness) comes Taiji (intent, movement, distinction). Taiji creats Yin and Yang (dark, cold, receptive, soft and bright, warm, expansive, hard) and from yin and yang all else comes into being.

The Bagua is one of the steps from two things to everything (traditional 10,000 things). You have that 8 the 8 combine in all possible ways to make the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. Most of this is about how one thing will always change into another and you can't stop the process and how everything inter-relates with other things.

So in one sense all things on the island must relate to the Bagua as all things in existance do. All the people on the island have inter-relations they don't know about. They are all going through changes. But it is such a general underlying concept of all of creation you could do the Bagua of any show.

It may just be used because it is a cool symbol and be a red herring.

When Desmond's alarm sounded we saw a digital clock clicking down, by seconds ... 2:38... 2:37... 2:36... and it reset to 108:00 when Locke typed in the sequence. Apparently, something would happen at 0:00 that might displease Desmond.
If our man Desmond has been on the island for a long period of time, then it seems he has been entrusted with typing in the sequence before 108 minutes elapses. Which means the guy hasn't had more than 90 minutes of sleep in a very long time. And that might explain his mental state.

I don't know why Desmond is there, but he certainly doesn't seem too happy. His "are you him?" question sounded to me like the man has spent a serious tour of duty waiting for his replacement. And in the meantime has been convinced the rest of the world was consumed by a plague of some sort.

At the end, Michael and Sawyer are met by Jin, who is struggling to get away from people he called The Others. But Jin has a serious language barrier. I think those people are the other passengers from Flight 815, who cannot communicate with Jin. They suspect Jin is an enemy, and by extension Michael and Sawyer are enemies. The tail-end survivors subdue and imprison our raft passengers without learning that both groups were passengers on the plane.

During this sequence, we glimpse Mysterious Island Man, who punches Sawyer, and is also seen closing the lid on the underground prison. My guess is that he was on the island before the plane crash, and has aligned with the tail end passengers. He also warned them of Others, and thus the suspicion when three other people turned up.

Do you think the days Desmond has been counting has been sixteen years? Was he one of the people that came with Danielle? Does he ask Lock if he is him means the person that received the numbers as call for help?

"RE: T Minus ..."
Posted by TeamJoisey on 09-28-05 at 10:51 PM
I don't think Desmond has been there for 16 years, because I don't think it has been 16 years since he met Jack in the stadium. I don't think Jack is older than 40, and 16 years ago he would have been only 24, which is fairly young for a spinal surgeon. (Doogie Howser notwithstanding.)

I don't think Desmond came with Danielle, and may not be aware of her existence. If Danielle changed the message 16 years ago, logically that would precede Desmond's arrival at the island.

"RE: T Minus ..."
Posted by JMORRISON23 on 09-28-05 at 10:59 PM
Do you think Desmonde knows if someone has received the message? Why was he so opened to Lock after he locked Katie up? If he knew there was a sickness maybe he knows that Danielle was on the island ( just a theory).

"RE: T Minus ..."
Posted by ladro on 09-28-05 at 11:34 PM
Although the time that Desmond has been in the hole may eventually prove to be irrelavant, it certainly seems important at the moment. His stadium encounter with Jack is the only clue that I know we have. The actor that plays Jack is 38, but he looks younger than a 38 year old surgeon would look (hard to tell with ther perpetual stuble). So if we assume Doctor Jack is 35, and Jack was 27 when he did the surgery, then Demond would have been in the hole for about 8 years. I don't see any believeable way that it could be 16 years, but of course this TV.

Conversely, we know from the old equipment and Apollo candy bars (I'm guessing circa 1970) that the hole is more than 30 years old. It is difficult for me to reconcile why the food and equipment would not have been restocked when Desmond took control 5-16 years ago.

Ok so I am wondering if Desmonde is some sort of gatekeeper or sentry of making sure that whatever happens when that doomsday clock counts down does not happen.

Was he thinking Locke was maybe the one to relieve him? Did Desmonde relieve someone else? Maybe the guy Hurley was friendly with in the asylum? Could explain why that guy kept repeating those numbers.

Good catch all on the shark...I did not see it all. Loved Sawyer's line "What are you gonna do? Splash me?"

Excellent episode. It is so strange I feel like the answer is right there and just out of my train of thought. Very frustrating but at the same time so exciting.

I hope they can maintain this excitement and suspense for the rest of the run. How far away until next Wednesday?

I think you are right that Desmond is there as a sentry, entrusted with resetting he clock.

Did you see in the last shot of the preview that Locke is on his knees in Desmond's computer room. And did you notice that the computer is in shambles at Locke's feet and the monitor is dangling off the desk?

I believe the clock is ticking, and the reset computer is no longer operational.

Also, we saw Hurley in the hatch/apartment, Desmond in the jungle, and Kate with a gun.

I don't want to wait!!

Remember the widow of that guy in Australia who said that her husband was on a remote Pacific outpost which is where he got the numbers or something like that? I'm wondering if Desmond is on the same Pacific outpost and indeed he's in charge of typing in the numbers just like the guy in Australia was. That would explain why he asked John Locke if he was "the guy" aka the replacement! The snowman question indeed sounded like a password to me...

Yes, I had forgotten about that, I think there is a connection. I had the impression that Desmond was a highly trained scientist type, and it would seem that would be necessary for such an operation. Somehow I got the impression from the woman that Harley met, that the other guy was kind of a blue collar grunt. But I am confident there is a connection. An issue I am having difficulty accepting is that the hole is being run by Australians (presumably the prior guy was an Aussie). Excuse me, but Austrailians are not exactly known for high tech research.

A Prayer for Help against the Foe
Ps. 57.7 · 12.7
A Song or Psalm of David.

1 O God, my heart is fixed;
I will sing and give praise,
even with my glory.

2 Awake, psaltery and harp:
I myself will awake early.

3 I will praise thee, O LORD, among the people:
and I will sing praises unto thee among the nations.

4 For thy mercy is great above the heavens:
and thy truth reacheth unto the clouds.

5 Be thou exalted, O God, above the heavens:
and thy glory above all the earth;

6 that thy beloved may be delivered:
save with thy right hand, and answer me.

7 God hath spoken in his holiness;
I will rejoice, I will divide Shechem,

10 Who will bring me into the strong city?
Who will lead me into Edom?

11 Wilt not thou, O God, who hast cast us off?
And wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our hosts?

Something that made me mad at the show AGAIN. At the end of last weeks show, they give a preview for the following week etc. It said something like-- everyones fate will be exposed or something like it. CAN NOT remember the exact wording but I know this, BS, nothing even similar was explained. Ken

"RE: Also---"
Posted by FFantasyFX on 09-29-05 at 03:11 AM
I think all that was meant by that preview was that we would get to see what happened to Sawyer, Mike, and Jin, who were conspicuously absent in the second season opener. Whereas the first episode concentrated on the people on the island, the second episode updated us on everyone's condition. Your interpretation of the preview also is legitimate (my mom interpreted it the same way you did), but you usually need to have the most narrow possible reading of the teasers. After all, they always have to save something for the show next week.

"RE: Also---"
Posted by ladro on 09-29-05 at 10:40 AM
I feel the same way. The story progressed less in this week's episode than in any other episode. The 15 minutes of flashbacks for Michael and Jack added nothing to the plot. The producers spent 20 minutes of the show essentially replaying the entry to the hatch. The highlight of the show was Michael shooting a Shark (btw, wouldn't that just attract more sharks?).

"RE: Also---"
Posted by SurvivorBlows on 09-29-05 at 03:07 PM
I agree, I have to say this was one on the rare Lost episodes that disappointed me. Once the episode started, it almost seemed to take on a clip show feel -- it was like "just get on with it already, we've seen this part before!"

The flashbacks revealed very little and seemed to be more filler of stuff we already knew than anything. Nothing significant happened during all the time we saw Michael and Sawyer on the raft. And then we had to endure Locke and Kate's version of the inside the hatch footage we'd already seen. Finally, the story seemed to actually be moving somewhere in the final 10 minutes of the show and basically all that became was a teaser for next week. The whole thing was one step above a clip show, I hope the network and producers aren't starting to get greedy.

I noticed also. One of the writers must have a thing for polar bears.

Was I the only one that got a chill when the priest was doing last rites for the airdude and kept saying something like "let the lord raise you up"... it made me think big time of when Desmond told Jack to "hold it up".

Or maybe I'm silly.

I thought the same thing Breezy, when Desmond said "Lift it up" possibly referring to giving a problem to God.

Did I miss something?? I don't remember any priest saying the last rites? Do you mean in the ER when Jack saved Sarah?

They are talking about a different show, "Invasion." (See the subject of the post.)

I tried watching 30 minutes, but could not get my mind off the question: "how does a dorky looking chief of police for a Mayberry size town score a hot looking Doctor twenty years his junior for a wife".
