I study T'ai Chi and some of us had noticed a fair number of chinese characters (Boone's shirt which I think was the number 84 (reference to "1984"?), I think Shannon's necklace was a character).

So I decided to pull out the I-Ching and see if anything popped up from looking at the hexagrams that go with those numbers.

While Probably anything can be Coorelated to anything else a few of these amused me, and I thought I would Share. From the Wilhem/Baines edition

4 Youthful Folly

"...;the spring rising at the foot of the mountain is the image of inexperienced youth. Keeping still is the attribute of the upper trigram; that of the lower is abyss, danger."

Hmmm....danger from below.

There is also discussion of the pupil seeking the teacher that kinda reminds me of the relationship between Locke and Walt, the two people who seem most keyed into the island.

8. Holding Together {Union}

"The yielding lines hold together because they are influence by a man of strong will in the leading position, a man who is their center of union. Moreover, this strong and guiding personality in turn holds together with the others, finding in them the complement of his own nature."

Reminds me of Jack during the early part of the season.

15. Modesty

"It is the law of heaven to make fullness empty and to make full what is modest...{examples given of the cycle of sun rise and set, moon wax and wane}...This heavenly law works itself out in the fates of men also...The destinies of men are subject to immutable laws that must fufill themselves. But man has it in his power to shape his fate, according as his behavior exposes him to the influence of benevolent or of destructive forces. When a man holds a high postion and is nevertheless modest, he shines with the light of wisdom; if he is in a lowly position and is modest, he cannot be passed by."

Again thinking of Jack and Locke. Both men have had experiences that are humbling and could make them modest, or make them hold fast to ego. Does Jack with the high position have widsom that comes with the modesty? Does Locke's surrender to the island mean he cannot be passed by?

16. Enthusiasm

"This begins a movement that meets with devotion and therefore inspires enthusiasm, carrying all with it. Of great importance, furthermore, is the law of movement along the line of least resistance, which in this hexagram is enunciated as the law for natural events and for human life"

I see Locke in this one, he gives his fate over to the island and stops resisting it.

23. Splitting Apart

"The inferior, dark forces overcome what is superios and strong, not by direct means, but by undermining it gradually and imperceptibly, so that it finally collapses."

There is talk of the splitting of the Survivors into two groups.

And this seems to be where the end of Season one is where it is going into Season 2....will trigram 42 tell us what is coming up??

42. Increase

A acrifice of the higher element that produces an increse in the lower is called an out-and-out increase: it indicates the spirit alone has power to help the world."

Locke? "Man of Faith"? does his way in the end become what is needed over Jack's leadership??

Just some random speculation based on the I Ching.
