This thread is the episode summary writer sign-up thread for "The Benefactor," which premieres Monday, September 13 at 8PM ET and will be consist of X episodes. And as a bonus, Cuban -- the founder of HDNet -- made sure the show was filmed and broadcast in HDTV, making it the first reality-competition show to do so (Burnett's "The Casino" was the first and only other reality show to, so far, be broadcast in HDTV... at least that I'm aware of...)

To sign up, please post your interest in this thread, as well as any applicable date restrictions that you may have. Writer selection will be arbitrary, sorry. Please note however, that we are also running open sign-up threads for several other shows, so if you are planning to reply to more than one of the above mentioned open sign-up threads, it would be helpful if you could note the other shows in your reply, so that we can try and ensure any proposed schedule doesn't schedule you for back-to-back summaries, commit you to more summaries than you were expecting, etc.

As a reminder, while all our summary writing is on a volunteer basis, etc. reliablity, timeliness (or at least status communication) is important, and that while we can't offer anyone any $$$, we do occasionally partner with companies to promote stuff and, if we can, I do try and pass some of the goodies.

Based on our previous Fall summary thread, the following folks have already expressed interest and don't need to post again:

- survivorscott (vaca 11/4-11/11)

...I'm still trying to find out exactly how many episodes the series will be, but I think it's eight.

I just checked the initial story I did on it, and you're right, the initial press release said six episodes, so yikes, looks like we're going to "random draw" territory. I'll keep your premiere interest in mind, thanks.

oh sure, why not?

since we're in random draw territory anyway. however, if someone else drops out to bring us to 7 for 6 slots, and/or someone else needs the slot to be eligible for one of the big boys, i'll step aside for them. or if they just really really want it, whatever

Wow, brave people risking this compared to how the first HDTV show with ridiculously rich guys went, 6 other people and myself actually had to watch that monstrosity to do some summaries. I envy your courage. At least it can't be any worse.

shaw, where did you see this? The closest I could find is the below, which shows space for 7 episodes, plus a spot for the winner (which I'm assuming will be determined by the folks who "made it" to the "Episode 7" column

OK, folks, with Scott withdrawing due to hurricane concerns and, from what I can tell, the show being a 7-episode series, I've scheduled the following. Since Apprentice is the only other Fall show that has already had its schedule posted, there wasn't much conflict potential, but I made sure that both Estee and Lisa's summaries are a couple of weeks away from their Apprentice episodes.

Episode 1 - Monday, September 13 - Draco
Episode 2 - Monday, September 20 - ssshaw
Episode 3 - Monday, September 27 - I_AM_HE
Episode 4 - Monday, October 4 - kpod
Episode 5 - Monday, October 11 - Lisapooh

Lisa/vols, don't know the answer to either of your questions yet -- ABC put out a release this afternoon mentioning the Reeves special, but there's no mention of Benefactor plans...

Barbara Walters will anchor a special tribute tonight to Christopher Reeve who died yesterday of heart failure. "A Special Edition of 20/20: Christopher Reeve, a Tribute to Courage" airs tonight, MONDAY, OCTOBER 11 (8:00-9:00 p.m., ET, and following "Monday Night Football" on the West Coast) on the ABC Television Network.

Best known for his movie portrayal of Superman, Reeve, 52, became a worldwide advocate for spinal cord research after a near-fatal riding accident in 1995. He spoke about the accident for the first time in an interview with Walters that year, and the two spoke on camera four additional times, most recently last year. It was during this last awe-inspiring interview that Reeve took out his ventilator and breathed briefly on his own. Tonight's one-hour special will feature some of the most memorable moments from Walters' interviews with Reeve, will look at the struggles Reeve faced in his recovery possibilities and how he pushed the envelope, and will examine his legacy in scientific research and interpretation of stem cell research. ABC News will also speak with friends and co-workers, explore his career and look at the incredible love story with his wife Dana.

Reeve once told Walters that he thought it was possible that he would walk again, but if he didn't, "...either you do or you don't. You just play the hand you're dealt. Sometimes you get a lot of face cards, sometimes you don't. But I think the game's worthwhile, I really do."

In his final interview with Walters last year, he said: "Being physically paralyzed for eight years, I get pretty impatient with people who are able-bodied but are somehow paralyzed for other reasons. You know, all the reasons people don't become what they could become or don't fulfill their potential, and they're walking around able-bodied, I'm going, 'come on, come on, go for it.'"

Reeve and Walters not only shared a friendship, they shared a birthday.

the abc benefactor site shows the episode description for what was gong to be on tonight as running on the 18th - I don't know if it will extend the season or not.

I'm relieved cause I was gonna have benefactor and survivor this week.

Basically what I'm hearing is that this week's episode will run next week, then the next two episodes will be edited together into a single episode, and then the finale will run to get this ratings disaster out of the way before it kills them in the sweeps.

I just thought you felt benefitted by someone's death, since The Benefactor didn't air because there was a tribute to Christopher Reeve instead.

You're still writing two summaries in a week though, since your episode of The Benefactor airs a few days after Survivor, instead of a few days before.

Tip: Don't volunteer to do two shows the same week. ;)

I felt I was benefitting from Christopher Reeve's death? That's quite a stretch you made there Armstrong.

I didn't volunteer to write two shows in one week - it's just how they ended up getting assigned this time.

You volunteer to write a summary for a show sometime during its run. The mods do an awesome job of spreading all the summaries of all the shows out among voiunteers to avoid that kind of quick turn around ninety nine percent of the time, but it just worked out that way this time.

OK, so the word from ABC is that in addition to last week's preemption, they are cutting another episode from this show in order to get it off the airwaves before November sweeps, meaning that it will now end as a 6-episode series (apparently, despite my initial 7-episode scheduling, ABC says it was originally planned to be an 8-episode run)

Unless Lisa or Jack have issues, the remaining episode assignments will remain the same, with the dates just changing and unfortunately, Estee being bumped off the schedule -- meaning the new schedule would be:

Episode 1 - Monday, September 13 - Draco
Episode 2 - Monday, September 20 - ssshaw
Episode 3 - Monday, September 27 - I_AM_HE
Episode 4 - Monday, October 4 - kpod
Episode 5 - Monday, October 18 - Lisapooh
Episode 6 - Monday, October 25 - jack_bauer

Lisa/Jack, let you know if you have issues.
