Yes, Kwame's artist selection was a major factor, of course!Kwame decided to follow Sam's idea of selling the glass of lemonade for $1,000. You only need to sell one, and you're set, right? Kwame even stated that they could sell less pieces because of their higher price point. Who needs volume? He didn't learn from the lemonade project at all. He doesn't seem to have learned from his MBA classes, either. When you have a niche product you need to locate, or cultivate, a niche clientel. They just didn't have the time for that. Everything about this rush-rush project screamed "Main Stream!", I mean, they were handing out flyers on the street. He even spent his own time on the street handing out the flyers, while assigning others to handle the gallery set-up. As PM, he should have been in the gallery, overseeing, helping, and getting more familiar with his product and the artist. He left that to the others because he just didn't like the art. It showed.
However did he survive this debacle? Last week, a $2K difference was considered horrendous, this week, a $13K difference was not denigrated.
I was so disappointed in Kwame this week.
Here is why the selection of the artist WAS NOT CRUCIAL
they sell a chimpanzee's finger painting for hundreds of thousands of dollars. It'sall about creating a buzz, a novelty, a movement. The problem with Kwame's team was they relied too heavily on the artist to push her product. If she could do that effectively, then why would she need to hire business firms to do it for her?
I too questioned the validity of her selling point. Sure, 4K is great; but is that a consistent 4K, with sales made often? If you sell 6 paintings a month at 2K each, but another artist sells 1 at 4K each, you can see whom would be the better choice from a purely business standpoint.
Regardless, they could have sold her work with a bit of elbow grease. They seemed to make no attempt to advertise the show, or bring in their own clientele. They relied solely on the artist's "ready made audience" which is stupid, because she likely has saturated that audience for sales already.
Omarosa knows NOTHING about art. She was talking out of her butt most of the night. Esoteric is to art as fast is to cars. It's a given. It does not sell.
