My problem with him when he is singing on AI is he just seems like he doesn't really want to be there.Maybe it is the bored rocker persona type of thing.
Technically he is good, but emotionally he seems to be phoning it in. Makes me feel like he auditioned for Idol on a dare and is just waiting for people to send him home so it can all be over.
Would it kill him to have a little fun while he was performing?

I feel the exact same way, Snidget. I think he just wants to get some media attention, but not actually win this thing.Amanda has that vibe to a certain extent, too.

I would like to agree with this also. While a great talent, I don't get the feeling he has his heart in Idol. There's no doubt in my mind he will get a recording contract and probably do very well, but I just don't see him winning Idol.(And I don't think he's too worried about that either)

I read that he had to be talked into auditioning for AI. I think he is almost embarressed to be on the show. Hope he gets over that and starts to feel competitive and cranks it up.

Now that is interesting. Maybe now that they are getting the full paparazzi treatment with being in the Top 12 it will start to matter to him. Here is Jim Sturgess, a hottie who was in the movie "Across the Universe" singing the song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IugXPMuxxqU
It is supposed to be a mellow song. I understand why some found it boring.

Slow or mellow doesn't make it boring to me.I like plenty of slow or mellow songs done on Idol and elsewhere
It is the body language of the singer and the look in the eyes.
I can't tell if the "I'm too cool to be here bored stuff" way he performs is because that is just his personality or if he really couldn't care less and is just professional enough to sing on pitch.
Some people I can deal with if I just listen to them, but the performance aspect just turns me off.
A lot of different things can set that off for me, but the "I'm too cool for this" or "I'm bored" or when it is very robotic just doesn't appeal to me.
The thing is I don't remember any of his performances since the voting opened looking any different than last night. Mellow or rocking he just doesn't seem to be putting much into the performance other than singing on key. Which, is more than some people do, but still I'd rather see someone enjoy themselves or put their emotions into it than hear technical perfection.
If I want technically perfect I'll listen to pre-recorded stuff where they fix all the bad notes before selling it.

holy crap. Lookin' good, Ace! I didn't listen but I did watch. I'll listen later. I wasn't a big fan of his on the show but he had the unfortunateness of me being in love with Bucky and worshipping Chris... and me not thinking he was very good most of the time. I'm a fan of his recorded vocals though. "Father Figure" was one of the best tracks on that album, imo. I'll definitely give his CD a listen.

I think if Ace had not worn his hair slicked back the week that he did, he would not have been the boot that week. His hair is part of his appeal. I think he has a good shot at a good career ahead of him. He hasn't rushed it, seems to be learning from others, isn't bucking being in a pop niche, looks great...I, too, like him more now than then--he was sorta marginalized by the competition that year. Still the best season imo.

Found this on a Michael Johns fan board-- a bio about his old band, The Rising:http://www.michael-johns.org/Info-on-his-band-t30.html
----------------
The Rising is:
Michael Lee – vocals
Robb Torres – guitar
Kevin Haaland – guitar
Ari Gorman – bass
Kirke Jan – drums
“I like the kind of music where you’re driving down the road just staring into oblivion because you’re totally swept up by the song. That’s the kind of music I want to write – something that puts you in a trance.”
So says vocalist and songwriter Michael Lee on the high expectations he’s set for the sound of The Rising, the brash, brilliant and hard-rocking young quintet that is poised to sweep away the music world with the release of their Maverick Records debut album, Future Unknown.
Highlighting a signature blend of rich, resonant melodies, textured rock guitar stylings and an incisive lyric content that elevates the personal to the universal, Future Unknown draws inspiration to everyone from early U2 to the Beatles; the Verve to Neil Finn and beyond. But it’s in their uncompromising drive to create a total aural environment that The Rising emerges as a wholly original new force in rock music. With instantly accessible hooks and gritty realism, Future Unknown, lives up to the high calling of its founder and front man. Simply put, The Rising makes an entrancing sound.
The point of origin for The Rising’s sound can be traced to the 1997 edition of the renowned Australian music festival Big Day Out, headlined by local heroes You Am I and avidly attended by eighteen year-old Perth native, Michael Lee. “I’d been singing in bands since I was a kid,” he explains, “and wanted to take it to the next level. I just didn’t know how. I’d always been a big fan of You Am I, so when they finished their set, I snuck backstage and approached lead singer Tim Rogers for advice. He told me if I wanted to make something happen, I had to go to the States.”
The teen promptly packed his bags and set his sights for the unlikely destination of Atlanta, Georgia. “I could’ve gone to Los Angeles or New York,” Lee continues, “but I didn’t want to get swallowed up too fast. I knew Atlanta had a smaller scene, so I figured I’d take my chances there. I didn’t know anyone and didn’t really have a game plan, but I figured it was only a matter of time before something turned up.”
Sure enough, within a month, he met a fellow Aussie and club owner who gave him a job washing dishes and cleaning toilets and eventually allowing the fledgling vocalist to sit in occasionally with local bands. “Eventually,” recounts Lee, “I hooked up with a guitarist and we became the club’s headlining cover band.”
The next labor-intensive years were spent paying dues as Lee sharpened his songwriting skills by day and played current hits to packed crowds at night. But he hadn’t come all that way to perform other people’s songs. “I had a passion and clear vision for what I wanted a band to sound like,” he reveals.
Recording a demo in 2001, Lee subsequently came to Los Angeles where he showcased for several labels, eventually inking an exclusive pact with Maverick Records. He then began assembling the elements of his new band, picking and choosing from the abundant talent of the LA music scene, including drummer Kirke Jan, guitarists Robb Torres and Kevin Haaland and bassist Ari Gorman. “I wanted in as soon as I heard Michael sing,” recounts Blankenship. “His lyrics and the way he handles a melody makes the music come alive.”
The electrifying creative chemistry of the newly minted quintet was immediately evident on stage. “We take the songs to a whole different level when we play live,” asserts guitarist Robb Torres. “There’s an energy to this band that can’t be described. You just have to experience it.”
It’s an experience that will soon be shared by fans of authentic, original and evocative music worldwide, with the release of Future Unknown. Produced by Rick Beato (with Michael Lee) and recorded at Southern Tracks in Atlanta, the album highlights eleven stunning Lee originals, including such standouts as the deeply personal title track, the searingly honest “Cradle,” and “So Alive,” a moving confession about the struggle to maintain faith in the face of adversity that is nothing short of inspirational.
“All my life I dreamed of making an album like this with a band like this,” says Lee. “But at the same time I know that just getting signed and recording is only the beginning. It’s what people will find in our music that’s important. We want to be a source of inspiration, a reason to believe, a way of seeing the world. Maybe that’s a lot to ask from a bunch of simple songs, but music has made a difference in all our lives. This is our way of passing it along.”
--------------------------------
THE RISING’s debut Maverick / Reprise album, FUTURE UNKNOWN, is due to be released October 14, 2003.
Here’s some early critical praise:
The Rising's debut CD, Future Unknown is flat-out one of the best of the year. We've covered over 400 bands in the past nine months and without a doubt in my mind - these guys are going to be rising to the top.
- Steven Ridenour, CEO Orlando Florida Guide
“Arena rock isn't dead - it's only been cooking in the musical cauldrons of bands such as Atlanta unit The Rising. On the band's Maverick Records debut FUTURE UNKNOWN, The Rising layers thick slabs of rock guitar goodness with singer Michael Lee's impassioned vocals. The band doesn't sacrifice melody for bombast, and songs are textured works of the heart brimming with irresistible hooks.”
--Kati Schardl, Tallahassee Democrat (FL),
August 22, 2003
“Lead vocalist and songwriter, Michael Lee has stated ‘I like the kind of music where you’re driving down the road just staring into oblivion because you’re totally swept up by the song. That’s the kind of music I want to write- something that puts you into a trance.’ That is exactly what I believe he has accomplished. The music is made with great melodies and complimenting harmonies that just seem to make the whole record.”
--Jessica Quenzler, Flicksxxxposed.com,
August 18, 2003
“The CD is truly shocking in how good it is…Lee’s vocals are perfect on every song… catchy choruses and rock solid rhythm.”
--Adam Newman, Kludgemagazine.com,
September 4, 2003
“Cradle,” the album’s first single, is experiencing huge success at radio. It’s currently being spinned on such prestigious stations as 99x in Atlanta, KZON in Phoenix and WEND in Charlotte.
www.therisingmusic.com is the band’s website, which includes sound clips of some of the songs—including “Cradle”—featured on FUTURE UNKNOWN. It also includes the video for “Cradle” and 3 songs performed acoustically at the July 11 grand opening of the new Apple Store in Santa Monica, CA.

Idolising AussieAUSSIE American Idol contestant Michael Johns has the support of last year's winner, Jordin Sparks.
Johns, who was born and raised in Perth but now lives with his wife Stacey in LA, has made it to the final 10 of the current series.
Judges have compared the 29-year-old to the late INXS singer Michael Hutchence.
"Michael Johns is actually our favourite - my family really like him,'' Sparks told Insider from her Arizona home last week.
"Aside from the fact that he's got a great voice - I love his accent - he's got the whole personality and he's really cute.''
At age 17, Sparks last year became the youngest person to win American Idol.
She's waited almost a year to release her self-title debut album, with the first single, Tattoo, out now.
Sparks was supposed to be in Australia for a promotional visit last week but had to cancel at the last minute to prepare for her upcoming support slot on Alicia Keys' US tour.

Capturing the essential part of the article:"Michael Johns has an extra incentive to capture the Season 7 crown: The Australian-born rocker was pals with countryman Heath Ledger - and an Idol win would honor his late friend.
"Michael and Heath hung out together when they were younger," a friend of Michael, 29, tells Star. “They were both born and raised in Perth and would go to parties and concerts together.”"

PEACH BUZZ: Late singer gets 'Idol' dedicationhttp://www.ajc.com/news/content/metro/stories/2008/03/20/buzz0320.html?cxntlid=inform_artr
Some portions of the article:
"When "American Idol" contestant and former Buckhead nightspot singer Michael Johns dedicated his performance of The Beatles' "A Day in the Life" Tuesday night, many in the close-knit Atlanta music community got a lump in their throats.
Johns announced on air he had selected the song as a tribute to late Garrison Field frontman Jon Allmett, who was just 36 and a newlywed when he died unexpectedly last August. Allmett, a native of England, and the Australian Johns frequently hung together at clubs like C.J.'s Landing during their years singing in Atlanta clubs (Garrison Fields' 1998 debut disc "Open" was a particular favorite here at Buzz Central).
Friends and fans said Wednesday that the song Johns selected was much loved by the late Garrison Field singer, whose band was often described as "Beatlesque." "
Note Michael is on Allmett's myspace:
"The singer's page at Myspace.com/jonallmett remains up and operating with benefit updates and touching tributes posted by family and friends (Johns, incidentally, is Allmett's No. 2 "friend" on the page)."
And Dolly P did a Collective Soul cover of "Shine"...that would be a good one for Michael to sing next week:
"Collective Soul guitarist Dean Roland, his business partner Paul Broft and their hipster nightlife Web site investors also were praising Johns on Wednesday. During his taped interview segment on "A.I." From ew.com:
"Michael Johns' "It's All Wrong But It's All Right" technically got two standing Os: One after his actual performance, when he had me screaming (in my head) that I would happily be all wrong with him right there in the studio (what? too much?), and then once more after the wrap-up clip of performances, which tickled the audience so much that they spontaneously leapt to their feet again. Yeah, yeah, I know you think this was just because it was the end of the show, but, seriously, it was all MJ."

What Glow said. What a real letdown last night. I sure hope Michael does get a decent deal out of his AI stint, because I am eagerly awaiting to snatch up his first CD.Thanks for all the music links. I have been enjoying them all, which makes it that much worse that Michael was cut so soon.
Question about the itunes downloads: Will they play on an mp3 player?
I have a Zen Vision M and I would like to download some of the Idol studio downloads, but I'm not sure if they will even work on my mp3 player.

Man, I am going to miss Michael. No more eyecandy on AI this season.

The thing about Michael going out so soon is that I like to believe that will give him way more freedom when recording his album (soon please!). Maybe they'll keep their claws out of him. They must know (based on iTunes sales) that he could bring them lots of money. I'm just hoping they're too stupid to tie him too tightly to them. From rickey.org:
"I was already thinking of a Michael Johns elimination yesterday because he sang at #1, and the “natural order” is really for him to go at this stage of the competition. That’s why I asked if the show was going to sacrifice him in favor of Carly Smithson. What stopped me obviously was Michael Johns’ sales on iTunes indicating voting and fan strength (in the real world). Giving Idol the benefit of the doubt, and hoping that they are all about the money, they wouldn’t drop him. But alas, just as I had suspected, this show is rigged. I can only say this now with more certainty because of my voodoo iTunes charts. Figures don’t lie. Syesha Mercado has no fans and we all know it. The result tonight was impossible if this show was truly based on votes."
I'm not sure about the iTunes to non-iPods. Maybe try http://ita.sourceforge.net/index.html
The studio version "Dream On" on iTunes is killer.

Thanks for the link re iTunes. I guess I should just buy an iPod, but I spent so much money on my mp3 player not quite 2 years ago and have most of my fave CDs on it. I still prefer buying CDs, rather than downloading individual songs from my favorite artists.AI won't be as enjoyable enjoyable at all without Michael. While Michael was finally starting to show his talent the last few weeks, my other early faves have been getting boring (Brooke, Jason) and poor Carly is losing her confidence with every criticism and it's showing in her performances.
At least I can come here to gaze on Michael pics, listen to Michael tunes and see Glows great Michael siggies. You are an artist, Glow.

You're welcome. Did it work?It will be difficult to watch American Idol this week. That's for sure. Especially knowing what song he was going to sing and wondering how it would sound (besides awesome that is).
Brooke and Jason are my 2nd and 3rd and Carly and David Cook are my 4th. I'm thinking I should bump them up since they were close to Michael. (I have a sweet picture of Carly and Michael somewhere but can't find it.)

That was certainly a shocker.I have been a fan of Michael from early on in he competition - I thought he rocked the house with his version of "Light My Fire" for example. I did think he blew chunks all over his attempt at "Go Your Own Way", as well as "Don't You Forget About Me", but over the last couple of weeks thought he had been one of the most consistent contenstants out there. I'll miss his performances and his talent.
I also thought it was cruel to tease him with the "last year we didn;t send anyone home....." nonsense, only to say that they were not going to do that this year. That was a bullshvt play for drama.

Ever since I heard this week would be a surprise boot and it was compared to Constantine in S4, I've thought it could be Michael going home. While I see absolutely no reason to use Constantscream as an example for a Michael boot because I see no similarites in the two, I still had that suspicion. That got me to thinking that myBucky left 8th in S5. I freakin' love Bucky and was finding that not a lot of people were getting it.Anyway. Some comparisons:
S5 - Top 9 performed country songs. Bucky sang "Best I Ever Had" in the pimp spot. I thought his performance was so sexy. I ranked him 1st.
S7 - Top 9 performed Dolly Parton songs. Michael sang "It's All Wrong, But It's All Right" in the pimp spot. I thought his performace was so sexy. I ranked him 1st.
S5 - Top 8 performed Queen songs. Bucky sang "Fat Bottomed Girls" in spot numero uno. I ranked him 3rd because while I adore Bucky and thought the performance was pretty much awesome, I could see that non-fans who didn't "get it" wouldn't see what I saw and thought the performance wasn't quite as good as the previous week's.
S7 - Top 8 performed "inspirational" songs. Michael sang "Dream On" in spot numero uno. I ranked him 3rd because while I adore Michael and thought the performance was pretty much awesome, I could see that non-fans who didn't "get it" wouldn't see what I saw and thought the performance wasn't quite as good as the previous week's.
I'm not comparing myBuckylove to mmmMichael, per se. I am just pointing out some similarities in the boot order and my views on their performances for those two weeks. I could, of course, compare my fandom for both of them. They are two of my four favorite idol contestants in all seven seasons. I will absolutely follow Michael's career. Eagerly.
hmmm... I wonder what Bucky's iTunes sales would have looked like if they offered that back then.

I can't wait to hear what Zazzy has to say about this! It makes me think that the producers know how to lull a singer's fans into a false sense of security (like what I said in the Results show thread). I had expected Michael to be a casualty of the rocker's vote splitting eventually, but not at F8.
His loss, for me, leaves a great big gaping hole in watching the singers. While I don't have the same mmmlove that you and Zazzy do, I always looked forward to his performance. Out of the 7 singers left, I could care less about 4 of them.

What a list, Glow!My list is:
S1: Kelly...winner
S2: I think it was Clay but it was not hard core or anything
S3: no one really after LaToya was ousted
S4: Bo, baby!...second place
S5: Taylor, baby!...winner
S6: Blake...second place
S7: Michael (of course!)....robbed, er, I mean 8th flippin' place
So I am in a little bit extra shock since I have had the ones I root for get so far in the past...

LAST EDITED ON 04-16-08 AT 07:55 AM (EST)S1 - I liked some chick and Kelly. Christina Christianson? Does that sound right? I think she came in 5th. I wasn't really that into the show. I had other things going on.
S2 - I liked Ruben and Josh Gracin. Winner and 4th.
S3 - Other than Fantasia, the season did nothing for me. She didn't really do much for me either except auditions and "Summertime".
S4 - Bo! and Carrie. That season was the best heartbreak-wise.
S5 - Bucky 8th and Chris 4th *rolls eyes*
S6 - Chris Richardson... hmmm... 5th? I totally forget. I forget because at this point, it didn't matter to me anymore. I missed his arm porn but eh, he'd make an album. And? it's coming soon!
At least with Bucky going out 8th, I could kind of (almost) understand why that would happen. I mean, SOOOO many people didn't like his style. But with Michael? I'm totally confused. I have my grassy knoll theories, of course, but I keep them to myself. For whatever reason, I give them the benefit of the doubt.

"Missing Michael"
Posted by Loree on 04-13-08 at 01:06 AM
The show just won't be the same. Not sure I will even keep watching.I do think it was manipulated to get Michael out. He wasn't following their script and doing the bluesy thing. They wanted David C to be the rocker. So Michael was sacrificed so David C could get the votes to compete against their chosen one Archie. *Yawn*
At least Michael is free to do his talk show appearances and other things. I did enjoy watching him with Gene Simmons on Jay Leno. And getting blindsided does bring him more attention than being a contestant that sticks around long after they are wanted. Michael has the Buzz now. Everyone is talking about him. I hope he takes advantage of that.
"RE: Missing Michael"
Posted by Glow on 04-14-08 at 09:03 AM
oh I'll keep watching. I always do. There are a few people left I'd like to see do well. I think I'll start making bets that the next shocking! elimination! will be Archie. They can't be that blatant two years in a row, can they? *wishful thinking*
Michael wasn't going to win. He didn't need to win. He just needed a bump and he got it. My husband's friend was over last night and I was listening to Michael. He said, "Who is that?" I said, "Michael Johns. The guy who was eliminated from American Idol this week. He came in 8th place. *rolls eyes*" His jaw dropped and he said, "They must be amazing this year if this guy was eliminated!" I was listening to "Dream On" at the moment. (So I figured he has good taste. I tossed him a Ryan Star CD ~autographed to boot~ on his way out the door. heh.)
Last week, I had one of the janitors listening to "Cradle". She was impressed (and maybe a little turned on).
I'm a total musician pimp. I'll back this guy as much as I possibly can until everybody sees what I see.
"RE: Missing Michael"
Posted by CattyChat on 04-14-08 at 09:39 AM
Way to pimp, Glow! You have exquisite taste. I am anxiously awaiting Ryan's new CD (tentatively titled "11:59") that should be out any time now.
My fave has only won a singing competition once (JD) and while I love INXS, I am hoping JD will go solo soon and do his own stuff.
Back to my new healthy obsession, Michael. I do hope that with the "shocking boot" buzz surrounding Michael, it will propel him forward quickly. He is so talented and I love that Simon stated on camera that he is a "very very nice guy." I love his seemingly down-to-earth, Aussie-next-door persona.
Like you said, Glow, I knew he wasn't going to win AI and I really didn't want him to, but he should have made AT LEAST the top 5.
"RE: Missing Michael"
Posted by Glow on 04-14-08 at 10:35 AM
I do what I can. It's not much but it's something. Hubby's friend asked me if there were any new bands (besides Michael) that I like and I was all, "ummm. On the radio? No, I don't think so. I have no idea, I guess." So then my hubby was like, "She likes all these guys she finds on television." That opened up my Ryan, Lukas, Marty, Neal pimping. I think it's awesome that my DH gave me an opening like that. oh. I asked him if he knew Daughtry was from AI. He was all, "Daughtry? *head tilt*" I was like, "you have got to be kidding me." Then I played a couple songs and they sounded familiar to him. Guess they don't play a lot of music on sports talk radio.I'm going to my friend from Cleveland's house next weekend. *waves to SilverStar* I'll put a little bit of Michael in her ear. I won't will try not to overwhelm her with it.
He absolutely should have gone farther than he did. No question. If for no other reason than to give us something to get excited about. The boy has a lot of flavors. He won't have any trouble getting signed and getting out there.

Loree, you and others may want to read about Michael at michaeljohnsonline:http://michaeljohnsonline.com/forum/index.php
Lots of good info, music info, vid clips, etc.
It's a good fan board and not too ooey-gooey.
I have to say that AI has been ruined for me. I am even more on the cynical side of things now...it does seem like his ouster was scripted.
Things changed between his performance of IAWBIAR Dolly week. The next Monday the judges are on the Larry King show saying Michael shouldn't sing rock. This after praising some of his rock performances. We saw last week that he didn't want to be pidgeonholed into one box. And now he's gone.
Funny, too, how the show's ratings have been slipping. Did they need the drama to boost ratings. Seems so.
Anyway...I think they are screwing the pooch so to speak. Over the years it will get more and more derivative.
I'll still track how they manipulate things to get the outcome they want. That will be the primary reason to watch AI now. And if I discover someone's music along the way, cool.
I wouldn't know Michael's breadth of pre-idol work without the show, so, for that I am grateful.
AI is a business and I guess we shouldn't forget that.
I just hated seeing them be so cruel in order to try to boost their business. Hope it backfires on them.

Yes, I have alot of Michael's music on my iPod. So I have to thank AI for helping me discover him. But the show isn't the same without him. I fastforwarded through it lastnight. Some snippets from RTVW's front page.
"So my whole experience on the show was Simon saying, 'I want you to sing more of the blues soul stuff and everything' -- but not every theme week fit into that. What I chose throughout the entire competition was a representation of the kind of artist I'm going to be after I get voted off. I'm going to be a rock soul singer. I'm going to make that kind of record. I'm proud that I stayed true to that throughout the entire competition."
"For me, what was more important was showing American what kind of record I'm going to make after the fact," he said. "I never wavered from the fact that I sang rock and soul. That was more important to me than getting the three thumbs up at the end of the day."
Regarding his song choice for Mariah Carey week:
"A really cool soul version, blues soul version again of 'Vision of Love,'" he explained. "It was hot, too, so I'm a little bummed."

Jon Peter Lewis, AI alum, created an internet show called "American Nobody".This week the interview is Diana Degarmo...but right below are the icons for the past interviews and Michael Johns was interviewed just before Diana it seems. So he kids around with JPL and then JPL has a musician friend give opinions on the show..and then at the end MJ sings "To Love Somebody" . So it's Michael bookends! The review of the show in pics and singing is funny, too.
http://americannobody.com/
MJ talks about being hamstrung by the theme weeks that started right from the beginning in AI 7. And that the Beatles weeks they only had 25 songs to choose from each week. It's fun seeing the "real" MJ.
A small warning: JPL's friend doesn't like Kris. So be prepared.
