He deserves his own thread. He's been my fav since they actually showed him onscreen (pisses me off he didn't get more face time during audition and Hollywood weeks) and he just validates that more each week.I'm now done with my gush.

LAST EDITED ON 03-06-08 AT 11:01 AM (EST)Jason is one of my top 3 guys this year. Only thing is he and David A. need to quit with the "aw shucks" routine ala Melinda Doolittle fame. It gets old really quick. Other than that I love him!

I hope he gets over the awe shucks also. Though his awe
shucks is the only one I find authentic. I always think he's going to explode everytime Ryan touches him after a song he seems wound so tight.

Interesting. Until this week, I didn't really like him that much. However, this week he blew me out of the water. I have watched his performance (and David C's), about 6 times since Tuesday. He is not one of my top three, replacing Michael who is really disappointing me of late.

I like him a lot. I like his style. But I don't think he is for everyone. I enjoy the hippy, dippy music style. Probably why I did Brooke too. I bet he could do some good work on Rusted Root, Blues Travelers or Dave Matthews' songs. Same with Brooke.

He doesn't have the slick public persona some of the others do that I find off-putting. He is likeable and I hope he goes far.Sorry, dude, I think I just doomed you to get cut next time around

I agree, I like his awe shucks. It seems so genuine, whereas David A's seems so fake. Jason Catro is in my top 3.

Love me some JC. He was such a nice surprise when he first took the stage. Came out of nowhere (no thanks to invisible editing). He is one of my faves.I have no problem with and totally believe his "shy" demeanor. I also have no problem with and totally believe David Arch's "shy" demeanor. I go with my gut and I think both of these guys are 100% genuine. You can have amazing talent and still be painfully shy and extremely humble. There are still some of those people still left in this DAW-filled world.

He's my fave as well. And being from Texas A&M, he has Aggieland (and TexAgs.com) behind him, and that's a lot of voting power! Some of the folks on TexAgs actually know him from school and say that he's exactly the same nice, humble guy IRL as he is on the show.

Love, love, love him. The cute shyness, the expressive eyes, the unique voice. I am wondering what will happen to his look as the contest progresses and the stylists work more and more on the contestants (assuming he stays for a while).

Did you see Simon's face while Jason was answering the phone in question? Funny.I like when he talks, I think the kid watched alot of Welcome Back Kotter growing up, because it's when he talks that he reminds me of Vinnie Barbarino. And I like it.

I would like someone to explain to me what people are seeing in this guy? Even Randy and Simon are predicting he'll make the final 4. Yes, he had his "Hallelujah" night, but that is really the only "wow" moment he's had, and it wasn't even a "WOW!" moment.
I think his rendition of "Michelle" was terrible. All he did was walk back and forth and was laughing at some people in the crowd. I suspect it was family/friends. It was a very unprofessional performance.
I don't get the guy. Anyone? Please enlighten me as to what i'm missing.

LAST EDITED ON 03-24-08 AT 01:23 PM (EST)Geekboy, I wonder the same thing about David A.
As for Jason C, I like him for being a breath of fresh air on AI. He is very personable when he sings, he sparkles, engages the audience, draws them in. On some songs he has the nice, easy going voice that is enjoyable to listen to. I can see him developing over the years. I think he is a bit green to be the AI winner.
He doesn't have much savvy yet and comes across as a goofball many times in the interview segments. There doesn't appear to be any pretense or calculation about Jason...he is what he is and he is comfortable with himself. He could just as easily be sitting under a tree on campus playing his guitar and singing a song as he could be on the stage. He is just plain likeable. And he is not pre-packaged like David A.
IMO Simon is mentioning Jason right now because he is selling well on itunes. The top 6 selling contestants are Brooke, David A, David C, Carly, Jason, and Michael. Carly was just bottom-three'd and Michael hasn't hit his stride yet, so the top 4 of the moment that Simon can support are Brooke, David A, David C, and Jason. I expect we'll see Simon's list change as the season unfolds and some memorable performances happen. For the moment, Jason's Hallelujah is one of the most memorable performances of the season.
Randy mentioned the following traits for the winner of AI on one of those Idol extra shows--the one Justin G hosts:
--Do they have the vocal chops?
--Do they have star potential?
--Are they cool? (could they be in the dawg pound)
And then he said: "it's going to be about a boy this year"
I think David C or Michael J seem to fit Randy's description better than Jason C.
P.S. Jason's studio recording of Michelle is the 9th largest selling of the studio recordings so far; If I Fell is 7th.
In the any American Idol list, Hallelujah is number 4 overall for any contestant this season.
"RE: Jason Castro"
Posted by nailbone on 03-24-08 at 02:06 PM
Are the studio recordings the full song, or just the minute and a half versions they sing on the show?
"RE: Jason Castro"
Posted by zazzy on 03-24-08 at 03:42 PM
Starting last week, they put out the studio recordings which are full length renditions of whatever they performed on stage--so around twice the length or more. They also started selling the actual performance video--so that is what-you-saw-on-stage 90 seconds or so version.
Before last week they sold the 90-120 second or so versions--so in Jason's case, Hallelujah is just the 1:45 length, while the studio recording of Michelle is 2:45. The performance video of Michelle is 2:05.
In Michael J's case, his studio songs are longer: the studio recording of Across the Universe is 3:44 and A Day In The Life is 3:34.
The performance video of ATU is 1:59 in length; ADITL is 2:10.
An earlier songs like Don't You Forget About Me is 1:45--there was no studio recording version of that one.

That's awesome. I was watching some video... maybe the making of the last Ford video and his bit put such a huge smile on my (bitter, missing Michael) face. He is just so cool and laid back. He was all, "when I get eliminated, I'm going to the beach." That's not verbatim but that's the jist of it. I'll have to find the link. brb!

Count me as someone who doesn't care for Jason Castro. He seems like a one-trick pony and I don't remember anything he did that wowed me. David Archuleta had my attention from the Hollywood finals. Jason seems to be doing the same things over and over. I feel like he'd be better served singing at luaus (don't get me wrong; my wife and I went to Hawaii for our honeymoon and would have been thrilled with a luau singer like him) but as far as American Idol goes? He just doesn't seem to have the same, shall I say, power as the others.

Archie does indeed do the same things over and over. And he shouldn't win. But he's not "OMFG get him gone now!" like I feel about Castro.Archie would make a great Christian gospel singer. Castro...well, I don't know what I would picture him doing, because his style of music doesn't do it for me. Maybe the fact that I can't pinpoint his strength is what I don't like about him. Everyone else, I can.

No one has the "OMFG get him gone now!" feel for me, although Archie is close. As for Jason, he's most often (even last night) compared to Jack Johnson. Not someone I'm familiar with, but I guess I should check him out.
To me, Jason's strength is a laid-back, quiet kinda style, perfect for listenin' to over beers and steaks on the back porch.

I have Johnson and love him.

I've been a lurker forever. Mostly on the Survivor board, but not this "season". I love to read the LIVE commentary here on the AI shows. I'm coming out of lurk-dom to just say how much I enjoy Jason's music & voice. I can't put my finger on it, but there is just something about his voice. It has prompted me to begin listening to Kirk Baxley (purple rain) & Ray LaMontagne & Jason Mraz (thanks Nailbone) and even Sublime. I think his version of Gnarls Barkley's 'Crazy' is incredible. Yes, I truly enjoyed 'Memory' studio version too. Anyway, I hope he succeeds in the music biz no matter how far he succeeds in AI. I think the AI "machine" just isn't for him anyway.
I also hope people could put the stoner comments aside and just appreciate the music for what the music is.

Welcome to the boards LittleRooskie! I think you'll soon find (if you haven't already)That every contestant gets critiqued, made fun of etc. from time to time. That doesn't mean we don't enjoy their music. It only means we like to make fun of them

Are you saying you thought he was boring? I don't think he is (or was) at all. I think the songs he chose were fine. I don't think he is cut out for this television show (I refuse to call it a talent competition... it's high time they cut the crap and call it a game show. uh. heh heh heh. I said "high time"). He just doesn't shine on that stage in that environment but I still think he's really, really good. When all is said and done? that? is what I care about. Whose music do I want to hear? Jason's #2 on that list.

I personally don't find him boring. I was refering to the judges and how they say he doesn't change things up and is the same every week. I personally like his style and have said many times his is the cd I will buy. I do like him more with an instument and he did so well with the ukalale I wouldn't mind seeing what he could do with a set of bongos
In fact I think I have a set of bongos he could use.

Great article! Thanks for posting it. I for one am solidly a Jason fan. I think he has a really lovely voice which especially shines when he has a song appropriate to it. It was heartbreaking last night when he flubbed the lyics on Tambourine Man, because that was a perfect song for him. I'm kind of resigned to Jason going out tonight, but in the long run, it will probably be better for him to be out of the spotlight and the harsh criticism that comes along with the final three. Being a runner up will give him far more freedom to do the kind of album that is best suited to his voice and style, as well!

Here's the deal,
I like Jason, but he always seems ripped out of his mind. And his pants are a little too tight as well. I like his layed back vibe though. He is probably my favorite now that Carly and Michael were both kicked off. Everyone else is starting to bore me.

Posted by nailbone on 05-05-08 at 12:19 PM
It's been announced that if Jason makes Top 3, he will go for part of his "homecoming" trip to Texas A&M in College Station, Texas. He'll do a little mini-concert and some stuff before then going to Rockwall.Anyway, the A&M sports boards and the A&M marketing department have pick up on this and are pushing for votes.
Lemme just tell ya, if Aggieland gets full-on behind Jason, all the teenies in the world won't get Archie past Jason.

forgive me if all of this has been posted elsewhere, but I just wanted to add my thoughts.
I don't think Jasons performance last night was a train wreck, if it weren't for him and David Cook, I would have stopped watching long ago. They have been my favorites from the beginning & I would purchase both of their CDs. Jason has a definite indie vibe - reminds me in a way of Devendra Banhart. The thing that's the best about him & probably his downfall is that he doesn't fit the AI mold. The judges can't control him & he is just in his groove, which seems to be a pretty happy place. The "Because it's Bob Marley!" response to Simon just said it all.

I loved reading this article. Jason Castro Is Everyone's 'American Idol,' In Bigger Than The Sound
Wasn't he the guy at that jam session back in college?
"Are you really that interested or amazed by the Davids or — gag — Syesha Mercado? No way, Jose. Jason Castro is a paradox, he is a riddle, he's my "American Idol." And he should be yours too. After all, you know him. Or at least your kids do. He's probably playing a dorm-room jam session for them as you read this. "

Posted by jadedxp on 05-07-08 at 03:36 PM
I love Jason Castro and have been voting for him like crazy but last night he blew it and for him to get through instead of Syesha wouldn't be right or fair. I hope they all get some sort of contract or recording deal out of this experience but Jason doesn't deserve to get through tonight. Sorry Jason
"RE: Jason Castro"
Posted by nailbone on 05-07-08 at 08:13 PM
Sadly, since when has "deserved" had anything to do with American Idol? Michael and Carly didn't deserve to go home before Brooke or Kristy Lee. Daughtry didn't deserve to go home before Eliot. LaToya didn't deserve to go before Jasmine or Diana. It's a popularity contest based on mostly earlier performances, not really a singing competition, despite what the judges like to say. People pick their faves early on, and vote for them no matter how badly they screw up (for the most part) or Archie and Brooke, who also forgot lyrics or otherwise screwed up, would have gone long ago.
"RE: Jason Castro"
Posted by ulalame on 05-08-08 at 03:39 AM
nailbone, it's funny how people of like mind can differ so!I didn't think Michael or Carly should have gone as soon as they did, but I didn't mind either of them going before Brooke and/or Jason. I would have like to see Syesha and Cook going out earlier than either/any of them of them.
On season 5, Daughtry didn't deserve to go out before Taylor Hicks, who should not have won that season. Daughtry probably also shouldn't have gone out before Elliot, but at least Elliot could sing. Kat should have won that season, hands down.
If there's any truth to this competition, it's that (other than Fantasia) strong African-American female singers go out before their time; witness Latoya London, Tamyra Gray, etc. Maybe Syesha this season is a come-back for those losses.
But overall, it IS a popularity contest. And when national popularity contests come down to the American Public to decide, and it matters how many times you vote, you can bet that the teen girl audience, for the most part, is going to decide the winner.

LAST EDITED ON 05-07-08 AT 08:25 PM (EST)Through early morning fog I see visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me I realize and I can see . . .
That suicide is painless it brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.
I try to find a way to make all our little joys relate
Without that ever-present hate but now I know that it’s too late,
and . . .That suicide is painless it brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.
The game of life is hard to play. I’m gonna lose it anyway.
The losing card I’ll someday lay so this is all I have to say.
That suicide is painless it brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.
The only way to win is cheat and lay it down before I’m beat,
and to another give my seat for that’s the only painless feat.
That suicide is painless it brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.
The sword of time will pierce our skins it doesn’t hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in the pain grows stronger . . . watch it grin, but . . .
That suicide is painless it brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.
A brave man once requested me to answer questions that are key
'Is it to be or not to be' and I replied 'oh why ask me?'
That suicide is painless it brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.
And you can do the same thing if you choose.

Here's a more obscure musical quote (more appropriate):I hate to tell you how he acted when the news arrived.
He took some friends out drinking and it's lucky they survived.
Well, he told them everything there was to tell there along the way;
And he felt so bad when he saw the traces of old lies still on their faces;
So why don't someone here just spike his drink;
Why don't you do him in some old way . . .

I love Jason's honesty in all his post interviews. Refreshing and understandable. BTW, Tambourine Man studio version is super! I love his sound and tone. Yep, I will prebuy any CD he makes. I can't believe 'The Sauce' interviewers Jared Cotter and someone else thought Eric Clapton WROTE 'I shot the sheriff'. I was thinking Bob Marley. Glad Jason cleared that up for them! I wonder who else thought that? Maybe Simon...was thinking Eric Clapton.

Somebody scanned their TVGuide because there was some picture and article about David Cook. This was at the top. I just cropped all the nonsense off the bottom.
"Two days before Jason Castro was sent packing, the dreadhead was in the Idol studio listening to David Archuleta rehearse "Stand By Me." Castro, 21, strummed along on his guitar, softly singing backup, when a thought occurred to him. "I should be working on my own songs," he said, breaking into his goofy grin."

LAST EDITED ON 05-13-08 AT 02:52 PM (EST)Thanks nailbone. I fell in love with his original songs about 6 weeks ago. He had me from the beginning, but it stuck for good after 'Hallelujah' and cemented me after hearing his originals and 'Crazy' and 'Badfish'. The boy is amazing and nowhere near "mediocre" (as he called his most recent work). The Mike & Juliet show has a much better interview with him. I tire easily with questions about the dreads & the 'vote/don't vote' needless debate. I think that interview is available from MJs site too. I tend to get my daily 'fix' from Castrocopia.com though. The Castro Lolcatz are hilarious!

From what I gather, the "top" six will be performing duets. The rumor mill is running rampant with Cook dueting with *drawing a total blank* ... ummm... oh. Mariah Carey. Archuleta and Neil Diamond. I think it would be awesome to see Jason perform a duet with (a) Buckley (hologram).
"baby I've been here before
I've seen this room and I've walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I've seen your flag on the marble arch
