The only one who stands out for me is Taylor Hicks. He's the one with white/grey hair. He is so interesting. I can't wait to see him sing a whole song alone. They didn't even feature him last night in the first cut down. I was sooooooo disappointed.

Taylor Hicks
He's my man
He can sing
If anyone can!!!!
Yeah Taylor!!

Love, love LOVE him!

However, I am SO FAR off the mark as a 'target' AI watcher that my favorites rarely get far (I usually lose interest & stop watching around final 6-7).

Last year was fun because Bo was my fave, and it was the first time I cared all the way to the end.

*sigh* I guess they don't think 40 yr old women with extremely diverse musical interests buy CDs. (but I have more $$ than 14 year old girls!)

I'm cautiously optimistic, however, that popular music has been moving away from the Boys & Girls Club lately (at glacial speed). Maybe more unique people will advance this year!

Go Taylor!!

I agree with you Tamarama, that more than just teeny boppers watch and love AI and we 40+ chicks buy CDs and don't download from the Internet -- so guess where that money comes from -- hard sales that's where.

So far here were my picks for each season:
1. Kelly Clarkson right from the start. My favorite perfomance for her was when she did the 40's song -- she looked and sounded great. Don't ask which song it was -- I'm having a mind freeze at the moment!

2. Clay Aiken (right from the start, who was the other guy!!? Don't see or hear much about him anymore.

3. Fantasia & Dianna DeGarmo were neck and neck for me

4. Bo Bice was my pick from the start, although Carrie Underwood was definitely my favorite female as she has a beautiful voice.

Hey Guys,
I have to agree with you guys. I am a 46 year old guy who loves to watch AI and I even took my mother to see their tour last year,by the way was terrible. I believe that Bo should have won last year if you were really voting on vocals as well as performance. I did not like Carrie at all and still do not. I even think Vonzell should have won over her. Grant you Vonzells vocals were not as strong as Carries, but performance wise I love watching Vonzell and she always made me smile watching her perform. I think this year we have alot of strong vocals and I am excited to see what the outcome will be this year. Love Taylor and do beleive he will be in the finals! I think since they have raised the age limit last year as well as Bo opening the door to a new group of voters we will see a difference in the outcome! Atleast I am hoping so. I thought last nights performance by the girls was awfull and I hope the guys learned something. I felt like they all were working to hard on being sexy and woriking the camere wich took away from their vocal performance. Looking forward to tonights mens competition and your feedback tomorrow! So untill then ...Kodi

He's the guy that kinda looks like Jay Leno, right? From Alabama?

I like him, too. He's got that southern country/rock/Skynyrd kinda voice.

You're right about Jay Leno -- but I thought he reminded me more of Michael MacDonald.

I love Taylor's voice -- he's kinda like Michael MacDonald, Ray Charles and a little of your Skynrd thrown in.

I can't wait to see more of him. I hope he sticks around for a long time -- hopefully for the final 10.

For some reason he reminds me of Eddie Money, just his mannerisms while he performs.

I'm very interested in Taylor Hicks. Hi sound is very unique and I hope he goes far in the competition. I'm looking forward to hearing him sing each night. Hopefully he'll pick good songs each week.

I did not watch Season 1 at all but got hooked with Season 2. My favorite chamipon so far is Fantasia. I love this show!

Taylor will be around for a long time. I'm convinced he will be there in the finale.

Taylor needs to stick to his roots, that being soul/blues singing. It will take him to the end.

Taylor DEFINITELY tops my list this year. He has a great voice and character. For me, he's just so compelling and interesting to watch. I sure hope he makes it far in the competition this season. Unfortunately, I have a feeling that his sound is more for the intellectual and over 24 demographic. Keeping my fingers crossed.

My other notables are Will, Chris and Ace. I can't wait to see how they fare in the competition -- their range and capabilities.

I think we might have a guy win this year (I hope).

I agree, but remember it's the year for the guys anyway...

Season 1. Girl
Season 2. Boy(s)
Season 3. Girl(s)
Season 4. girl, but rightfully boy...

Season 5. It's gonna be a boy.

Favorite guy so far no question. Of course, that isn't a HUGE compliment considering that there's a lot of pretty boys in that bunch. I love the quality of his voice, and he seems to be a genuinely nice guy, but song choice is going to be mega mega mega important for him, and I think it is going to be a big challenge to find good songs for his voice.

But, the four of us had a great time.

"RE: Any Taylor Hicks fans out there?"
Posted by tamarama on 02-16-06 at 04:14 PM
>>song choice is going to be mega mega mega important for him<<

Agree, but I think his age & experience will help him with this. He's not some 17 yr old kid trying to find himself, he likely knows what works for him & what won't.

Like Bo last year -- who managed to twist each genre just enough to fit HIM instead of twisting himself to fit the genre. (OK, except for musical theater week...I don't care if you don't know the genre, NEVER choose a song by sticking a pin in a list. Oy vey.)

I think Taylor will not only prove he can pick the right songs, but I think he (and any of the more mature contestants) will be more true to himself from week to week.

Thank god they upped the age limit last year.

(BTW, I thought I posted a comment like this earlier but now I can't find it. Probably user error, but please forgive me if I've duplicated myself.)

My thoughts exactly!! I am and avid R&B fan and he just has soul and charcter. I will vote for him as long as he's in the competition.

Omigod! I was biting my nails last night. BUT -- hooray -- Taylor is in the final 24!!! If he doesn't make it to the end, somebody better pick this guy up and sign him. I think he's a refreshing change from a lot of stuff that's out there.

I agree about song choices. He needs to be ultra careful and not get stuck as a one-dimentional guy. He has to appeal to a lot of different tastes in the AI fan base.

Now that we were able to see more individual people in depth last night, there are more guys than girls that I like this year. One of the reasons is that they not only have good voices but they have some individual "character" as well.

I like him too! Unfortunately, I think if he wants to get far he will need a makeover. Its not so much the grey hair as he just looks old and unkempt. I think a hair cut would do him good. I am rooting for him to go far.

Hi All – if all y’all are interested I found a website with photos of TH when he must have done some performances with a band down in Alabama. They're from 2002 and he looks younger and somewhat thinner. He looks great. So it seems he’s been hoofin’ around for awhile – maybe AI is what he needs to give his career the exposure he needs. That's what Bo Bice needed and he got it from AI. Hope it works! I think he could do really well.

I like him, too. Not only does he have a nice voice, a positive attitude, and great personality, (which is more than enough to garner fans), put a pair of glasses on him and he looks just like my brother-in-law! How can I NOT cheer for him? They both have the same accent, too, which is kinda freaky.

I love this guy also! I just can't stop watching him, although it sometimes seems wrong and I get kind of embarrassed for him because of all his twitchy moves. But I think that's my own problem with him being so comfortable in his own skin, you know. I wish I could be that confident and seeing him just do it full speed makes me embarrassed of my own self that I can't do the same.

I really hope he can win over the voters. He's a prize.

And I will be so disappointed if he colors his hair.

Taylor Hicks brings me back to being a child and sitting on my grandmother's front porch in Louisiana. Somebody had a guitar and somebody had a harmonica and we just sat and sang all Sunday afternoon. I love his passion for the music, not the camera, but the music. I hope he, at the very least, makes it far enough to get a deal for a record.

This guy is great. I am hooked. He has a real love for what he does and it shows. He would be doing this whether he was on AI or not. The fact he could make money from it is second to him.

I love his voice. I however do not see any Michael McDonald in him. MM's voice grates on my nerves!

Taylor Hicks, in my opinion, is PRECISELY what American Idol is made for.

AI doesn't need to produce another Whitney, or another Britney, etc. AI needs to find that hidden talent, the unique voices out there, those people that are not your cookie-cutter POP MUSIC types.

Clay Aiken needed AI in the same way. I think in a lot of ways, AI NEEDS Taylor. Taylor Hicks would be a pot of Gold for AI. I think he'll make it far, if not even to the finale.

Zipperhead,Funny when you said you would buy his album.

I was thinking the exact same thing and the wife and I both said when he came on and started singing "I cant wait for his album to come out! Win or lose this thing,Ill buy it!!"

That guys just got it! And yes, He's a breath of fresh air and somthing totally unique.

Joe Cocker, Ray Charles and Michael McDonald all rolled inot one VERY neat package!!

GO TAYLOR!!!

PS: My ONLY concern is that he will have to be VERY careful in his song selections. So far he's been spot on but I have to wonder if there are enough songs out there available for him to be able to keep doing what makes him great. Carrie Underwood was my fav last year but she did struggle thru songs that werent really suited to her Country,Gospel style.

I agree in regard to song selection. He has to pick songs that he's comfortable singing and that are suited to his unique style. I really want to hear him cover "Minute By Minute" or "What A Fool Believes" or some of the songs Bo Bice picked last year. This guy just has it and I think he can grow in this competition and make it to the finals.

Taylor's first complete performance last night was AWESOME!!! It wasn't long enough. I could have listened all night to him. I found a site that plays his video and I have played it at least 12 times and emailed it to myself so I can look at it any time I want. You can find it at TaylorHicks2006.com. Just FABULOUS!!

On songs for Taylor, how about Cockers "Up where we belong" that might just work real well for him.

But, I just cant see Taylor singing Cockers "You can leave your hat on". Id love to see him do it though! Itd bring down the house and the judges would probably fall over!LOLOLOL

This old granny just turned 55 and I gotta say the first time I saw Taylor sing (during his audition) I immediately thought of Joe Cocker who is one of my all time faves. I loved when he walked into the long, long room to find out if he was in the top 12 men playing his harmonica.

I love Taylor and I will be rooting for him all the way through. He is so unique and such a wonderful breath of fresh air.

He is the first AI that I would pay to hear sing right now!!!!

I'm with you, brvnkrz. I find him to be ordinary and wouldn't buy his CD.

Of course, this is only my opinion; CD sales after the show (if he gets a contract) will show how popular he actually is, and I predict he won't get a lot of airplay. His voice is good, but not great.

By the way, someone else mentioned (on another locked thread) that he looks just like George Clooney. Now, I need to make this very, very clear:

TAYLOR HICKS BEARS NO RESEMBLANCE TO GEORGE CLOONEY WHATSOEVER.

I have to admit that I was not wild about him when he auditioned. Maybe his look threw me and I didn't really listen. I don't know. I took notice during Hollywood, and after his first performance, I was SOLD. I think he is such a very cool guy and an incredible talent. I love that what you see is what you get. Taylor Hicks has "IT"!!!! He's unique, attractive in a "I just can't help it" sort of way, and he can fill a song with feeling. I love listening to him sing, even tonight when he chose a bad song. I love that he wants to represent southern songwriters, but he shoulda picked a Skynyrd or Bad Company song instead. Love that gravely voice.

My DH found a site that is a radio station back in Georgia or Alabama, and they have a couple of links for some songs he has recorded (as well as a reference to a CD that is available to purchase!!). I'll try to dig up the site if anyone is interested.

Taylor's CD has to be ordered by phone, so I'm trying to get this West Coast/East Coast time thing handled so I can order it when the store is open. I'd just sit and listen to him sing anything.

>Would love the info, I would
>buy a Taylor Hicks CD
>anyday.

Here it is:

Laser's Edge Compact Discs
Birmingham, Alabama
1-800-626-6495
www.lasersedge.com

The CD is titled "Taylor Hicks - Under the Radar" and is listed as a local independent release. They have added an online ordering option. It's their number one seller right now. Would be funny if he sold a million copies of an independent CD before he got a record contract.

(DISCLAIMER: I have absolutely NOTHING to do with the sale/advertising/promotion of this CD ... simply a fan that found this on the internet and wanted to share with other fans .. read the guidelines and think I'm safe, just wanted to state the facts)

IMHO, Taylor seems like a nice guy who has a lot of drive.

I just don't think he's an incredible talent, unless he has the ability to write his own songs, like bob seger or neil young. Someone mentioned in an earlier locked post that he looks like George Clooney. Although he has a definite look, here is NO WAY he looks like George Clooney.

Vocally, he's not a great singer ( you'd know this is you put his personality aside and just listened with your eyes closed), but he has character, and he'll definitely make it to future rounds.

Overall, I agree with Simon's words. He is truly honest. We need to set our sexual urges aside and just LISTEN.

Ace sucks, and so do most of the contentants.

i have to disagree. I have a CD by him and he's an amazing singer. The problem so far on AI is that he's picked songs outside of his vocal niche. Hopefully he'll pick a better one tonight.

From the minute I saw him during the auditions I fell in love. I just cannot believe he's as young as he is. Not only is his hair grey, but his mannerisms and such makes him look very mature.

His voice is fanstastic and it sticks out for me.

My final 2 this season?

Taylor
Paris

(Yes, I like the other girl too, the big one (sorry can't remember her name) but I really think Paris will last a lot longer and is the essence of SPUNK!

I'm praying for some Michael McDonald outta Taylor. I bet it'd sound great.

J Slice, that was great that you got your wish.

Now could you wish he would sing Joe Cockers version of The Letter?

lol Thanks

I know I am probably in the minority on this thread, but there is something about Taylor Hicks that I find downright creepy. I can't quite put my finger on it - maybe it's the jerky, spastic movements he makes or the immature way he jumps around the stage. He may have a very good voice, but I can hardly stand to watch him to tell you the truth. To me he is not American Idol material at all. I predict that Chris will be the next AI.

I'm a Taylor Hicks fan. He has a great voice and a personality. However, i watch American Idol every single week with my friends and we are always laughing our @$$es off at that head/neck tilt to the side thing he does. It makes him look crazy. It bugs us so bad. He does it at least 3 times an episode, count.... Thats my only complaint about him.

Definitely a huge Taylor Hicks fan. The first time I saw him in auditions, I didn't really know what to think, but I admit, I've fallen totally in love with his passion for music. I find his gestures endearing and they make Taylor, well, Taylor!

While I think there are other great singers in this group (Mandisa, Chris, Paris-although I'm tired of HER already, Elliot and Katheryn), Taylor brings something so unique to this competition and to the world. I love how comfortable he is with himself, how genuine he is, and how he loves what he does. I would imagine if 90% of the U.S. got on stage and did those same types of moves, we'd be completely embarassed, but Taylor? No way...it just fits him. I love that...it's completely natural for him, and just how he expresses a portion of his passion.

I'm absolutely buying his CD, no doubt about that. I've always loved Michael McDonald, even back in the Doobie Brothers days, and Taylor brings a touch of Michael's style with him.

The judges said they were looking for unique talent...they certainly got it with Taylor. I'd love it if he took the whole thing!

I'm a big Taylor fan but I have a question.. how can he be on American Idol when he has a CD out?

"I like Taylor, too..."

but don't know the answer to the CD question. I guess anyone can get some sound equipment and record their shows...

I love that Taylor loves music so much and that his passion is simply performing. It would be great if he could win. (I like Chris, too, but he kind of looks dead behind the eyes.)

I really liked the song he sang last night (3/28) but I wish he would have let his soul side go instead of standing in basically the same spot during the song. His gyrations and swaying are part of who he is as a singer and that is part of why I love to watch him.

Go Taylor!!!!

I loved the song that Taylor sung last night. Does anyone know the name and what artist?
I was glad that Taylor stood still and just sung the song. I find it a little distracting when he jumps around and I was glad to just listen to his vocals, which I thought were great.
I think he was trying to listen to the judges feedback. The last few weeks Simon was telling him that he looked like a drunk Uncle at a wedding, so I think he wanted to show a more serious side.

Funny, I was the last one here a few weeks ago to say Taylor was great last night!
I think the Rod Stewart song was perfect for him. He gave one of the best performances of the night and it was truly entertaining. He reminds me of Rod the way he jerks around on stage while he is singing.
Last night was the first time I thought Taylor could actually win this thing! (and I haven't been voting for him as my "favorite")

"Anyone see the SNL Skit???"

Yes, I am a HUGE Taylor fan. He was GREAT last night. He has excellent & distinctive vocals and I love the way he is possessed when he is performing.

Seacrest said something about an SNL skit of Taylor -- did anyone see it? Linsday Lohan was on for the millionth time & I didn't bother watching & I went on the SNL Web site to see if they had a clip to watch & nothing. I HAVE to see the impersonation. Guess I'll have to watch for SNL rerun of Sat's show.

I've been voting for him, along with my other 3 faves. Last night I voted extra for him & Kellie -- both were very hard to get through on. Taylor is staying for awhile (so Simon better get used to him )

It was quite funny. It was during the news segment with Tina Fey asking questions of "Taylor". The guy playing him was Jason Sudeikis.

He did lots of "Wooo" and "Hey", and "Soul Patrol!" and jerking his body around. It was cute and funny, a nice parody of the real thing. He did have the movements down pat!

ETA the actor's name.

I hear you Captain. As I said, he really has not been one of my "favorites". When the jerkiness gets excessive it bugs me, too! I'm sure it is exactly what some people really like about him, but for us it's a weird distraction.
My positive comments refer to the times in which vocally, he nailed the song. I think there is no doubt he is a talented singer, but I'm not sure people will be voting in mass for his whole persona. It will be interesting to see.

I think you are mistaken. Taylor has a huge following - mostly people that enjoy his singing talent (and who disregard his stage presence). I think that people ejoy his honest enthusism!

"Taylor Rules"
Posted by CattyChat on 04-26-06 at 12:28 PM
I just have to mention that every single guest artist that has come on this show has remarked on how talented, unique, passionate & charismatic Taylor is. He really has the whole package and it drives Simon NUTS that Taylor is so popular. Even when Taylor has a so-called "off night" he is still great. When you have that many successful singers, song writers, performers singing Taylor's praise, that says something right there. They all can't be wrong and the Judges right.
