"Could Paula Abdul win American Idol?"

Reset her age to the time when she first broke into music, assume she makes it to the twelve who'll be voted on by the public, and put the new judge of your choice in her seat. What are people saying about her? Do Randy, Simon, and the new gavel-swinger give her any breaks at all, or is she one of those 'Why haven't they voted you off yet?' types? Can she deal with the theme weeks? Will there be complaints about her fan base? And how far does she get?

(I just started a thread on the AI forum. I am having the weirdest day...)

I've thought about this several times, and have to think that she would get pretty far. She was a great performer. Imagine her out there dancing around the stage - it's unprecidented (except maybe by Travis Tucker.) She would probably have trouble with some of the theme weeks, because her style was so very pop. Probably not a good enough voice to win, but top 4 easily.

I always wish someone would sing one her her songs. Why not on 80's week, at least? They were great songs, at the time.

I'll be you anything her songs are on the do not sing list - she probably forbade the show from allowing the contestants to sing her songs. The season one finalists did a medley of her songs one night.

Wouldn't even make it to Hollywood.

Paula was a dancer/Laker Girl who got into the music industry by choreographing videos for other artists.

She's charismatic, probably a nice person, probably easy to work with, so in the relatively new MTV era, some genius decided to give her a record deal.

How many times have the judges told contestants that the dancing was fun, but this is a singing contest?

On her recordings, the voice was very small - little-girlish even, the range required was small.

PLUS...don't forget that there was some to-do about a studio singer wanting more credit because she was used to beef up Paula's sound. So we don't really know if what was recorded was 100% Paula.

In addition, we all know that they work miracles in studios...that's why so many "singers" work with tracks in concert -- they can't repeat the vocal performance from their recordings without electronic help that a mic can't give.

(edited to add: *sigh* The Buggles were right, video killed the radio star)

To be fair, alot of my favorite artists would never make it on AI. Not that Paula is one of my favorites, & not that I hate Paula ('cause I don't).

They'd tell her she could dance, and had a nice personality, and Simon would say she should lose weight, and her voice would sink her before the final 24.

Straight up.

I agree. She was fighting weight issues early on in her career and I think time has made a lot of people forget that she was never a great singer.

I agree Ginger, except I'm not so sure about making it to the final 24. I would have to hear her singing a cappella to know if she had any real talent.
This is a great question though, I've thought about it many times.

I just replied to a thread in the AI forum. I am having the weirdest day too.

Straight up, No!

I've thought about this, and Paula just does not have a strong voice, so I don't think she would get far in the competition. She was "produced", so that's what made her a star, the producing.
