"Why Are The Coys Going to Ireland If Their Heritage is Scotch?"

OK, they dress their sons in kilts for the wedding to highlight their Scottish heritage (with bagpipers, too, yet!). And for Dad's 50th birthday, they're taking him to...Ireland? Does this make sense? Why not Scotland? I mean, they have a million bucks, they can go anywhere they want!

Two possible reasons come to mind:

1. The Coys are really Irish, but for some reason feel compelled to tell people that they're Scottish. Their last name could be a shortening of McCoy, which is definitely Irish.

2. The Scots want nothing to do with the Coys and have banned them from their island because Patrick (another Irish name!) burned down the last hotel they stayed at when they were in Scotland.

Thoughts?

Reason 3.

The Irish and the Scots are both of Celtic origin. And they both wear kilts.

#2 - very funny!! Can we ban him also?

Here is a quote from www.kiltmen.com:

The typical Scottish kilt is made of 8 or 9 yards of smooth, tightly woven wool with a tartan (plaid) design. Men having Scottish ancestry usually choose tartans for Scottish clans that are associated with their family names. There are also many non-clan tartans that can be worn by anyone - whether Scottish or not. Kilts may also be of solid colors - as frequently seen in Irish kilts.

I stand corrected. I wasn't aware that the Irish also wore kilts. Thought it was just a Scottish thing.

Plus, as Randi and her father were about to walk down the aisle, she said the rainy day made for a nice Irish wedding, so I'm pretty sure they're Irish.

Being of Irish Heritage myself, I was really hoping you people would be able to prove the Coys were Scottish.

I too thought Catherine said they were Scottish? Maybe when discussing how the brothers would be required to wear kilts to their sisters' weddings? I would check my Tivo but I'm not sure I can take it again!!

I think the dad is Irish, the mom is Scottish, and that one son is Selfish.

I don't remember anything being said about a Scottish heritage but then I also missed an episode. I do remember several instances of the Coys mentioning their Irish heritage though. Coy is a good solid Irish name, that's for sure. Would've been a funnier joke if their last name had been McCoy though... we could've had Randi's family be the Real McCoys next to Steve's fake family. And then there's the whole Hatfield and McCoy angle to play on between Steve and Randi's families... Ahh. Narrowly missed puns galore.

BTW... the bagpipes aren't solely the province of the Scots. They're a waaaaaay old instrument. They've been making them in Sweden and Germany for ages, as well as other places. History traces the instrument as far back as ancient Egyptian times, though the Scottish bagpipe is rumored to be an import from Rome or perhaps brought over from Ireland during colonization.

You can find all sorts of cool sites on the net about the history and making of bagpipes.

Yeah, I thought Catherine (Mama Coy) might be of Scottish descent. She kinda looks a little like Martha Stewart, who has some Scotch in her...er...you know what I mean!

I bet she was wishing she had some Scotch in her during that mock-wedding.

YoungestPug (who is still in high school with Master Coy) asked if the Coys were Italian when she saw the large flag in Bobby's room; MamaPug answered "No that flag is green/white/orange (not red); definitely an Irish flag."

I actually think they are Lebonese(the Lebonese are blonde, right?) but have to explain Patrick's drinking habits on something so they call themselves Irish.

Well I can attest that the Coys are definately not Indian, as any Indian family would be thrilled that their 30 something daughter got engaged and married in a matter of days

The Lebanese are of Arabic descent, definitely not blondes. Unless youre talking about the two ladies that live down the street from my friends mom.....she says they're lebanese, but I dont think shes talking about their heritage.
