"Rich Boys?"

Between Ally and Jamie and Paris and Nicole my television is overflowing with entertaining images of rich 18 year old girls. It's interesting to think about why there aren't, and probably won't be, similiar shows about rich 18 year old boys-
-because money on men connotes power rather than "being spoiled"?
-because rich boys/men base more on reputation than looks and therefore to do wish to broadcast themselves acting foolish?
-because most 18 year old guys are very invested in performing normative masculinity, which is very very boring too watch/not entertaining at all?

any other hypotheses are welcome; I am not saying that I know the answer

Who are Ally and Jamie?

Ally and Jamie are another pair of 18 year-old rich girl bestfriends who are featured weekly on MTV's reality show called "Rich Girls." Ally is Ally Hilfigger (spell?) daught of designer Tommy Hilfigger. And Jamie Gleicher's Dad invented some kind of luggage. These rich girls don't go live on a farm in Arkansas or anything- the show primarily consists of watching them shop in New York City where they live.

I had to stop watching Rich Girls when Jamie said (paraphrasing) that it was sad that working class people didn't wear cargo pants for style like she was going to that night with a sexy shirt and high heels, but we actually bought them because we needed to use all of the pockets while we were out in the field. How dumb. I don't know anyone who buys cargo pants because they need to extra pockets.

lolYeah, the cargo pants comment was really bad. Seems like Ally and Jamie try to feign awareness of the world, which often makes them look worse than Paris and Nicole, who just sortof are what they are, rich, sheltered young girls.

Oh, Ra - you've missed the elegance that is Ally and Jamie?

There is no dreck so awful I don't watch it.

None except at least Jamie and Ally have the excuse of being 18. Paris and Nicole are way over that age mark and act even younger than 18 if you ask me.

Yep, they do act younger than Jaime and Ali. At least Ali has managed to steal some intelligent-sounding soundbites from her shrink, even if they are all about her needing to relive her childhood...

Anyhoo, I think that another reason is that boys/men aren't generally as open as women are. The pseudo-philosophizing that Jaime and Ali do most likely wouldn't happen with 18 yr old rich males. And if anyone catched that E! story on the uber-rich, the men Paris and Nicole's age didn't have the same spark, the same presence, that Paris has.

Good points. And, yeah, sorry I implied that Paris and Nicole are 18. They're like 22, right?

Well, I never saw Rich Girls, so I can't form an opinion on that, but with Simple Life, I think that having girls doing the farm work makes the show more interesting. We have the girls going ew and yuck when they have to do something with livestock.

I don't think we would have the same reaction with a couple of Hollywood boys. They would probably suck it up and bear with it. The example that comes to mind would be with The Newlyweds, Jessica Simpson goes ew whenever she has to do any cleaning or tidying while Nick just sucks it up (but he is also more a neat freak that she is).

Also, females tend to shop and enjoy shopping more than guys and I read that in a scientific study. I'm a girl and I admit I like shopping (which means I like browsing and looking at sales but it doesn't mean I have to actually purchase anything). While males tend to prefer just buying. That means going into the store, walking to the area, picking up the item, and then purchasing the object and leaving the store. My brother is like that but he actually likes the occasional shopping at the real bargain places. This means that the parts of the shows that show shopping would almost need to be with females because males wouldn't do that.

I saw three ships come sailing in.

thank you to the person that explained who ally and jamie are, I'll try to drop their names into a conversation to look hip. The wealth of the participants is really irrelavent. The answer to your query is that guys will watch hot chicks for the T&A, girls watch hot chicks for fashion and image tips (this is why models and actresses always front women's magazines). Girls may watch hot guys but guys will not watch, hence half the potential audience is lost.

I agree with that.

Very good point ladro. Although my survey of message boards finds that most guys don't find Jamie and Ally particularly hot. Although, they clearly watched enough of the show to come to this conclusion

Thanks to everyone for their ideas- very insightful. I loved the use of the Newlyweds as an example!
