"who were/are these peeps?"

Time for a trip down memory lane. I've taken a few samples of past peeps sigs and provided them for you. Can anyone identify who they are? Feel free to add some of your own too.

S'up Foon?

Glad you rejoined the pack, we were going to send out a search party but someone brought in donuts and we got distracted. We really were going to though. Honest.

Me? well, let's see, I was invited by a bunch of friends to an office fish fry. Fortunately I had the ich that day. Later I learned that that was just the managements' way of cutting back the work force and having a meal in the bargin.

And my pal Phil ran away to the East coast. He managed to drive all the way there with a dog in his lap. Yeah, well, he's always been an outside the barn thinker.

Oh yeah, I got bit by a spider in my sleep during the summer. Man that was irritating. It was either a spider or an enemy agent.

I can attest that the Gupster indeeds speaks truthisms. I also know of this Phil guy who supposedly took a long route to the Nautheestahn areah. The lap-dog was a Corgi/Yorkie mix. The same one that you help save the life of.

Mr. Enigma to the rescue.

TribePhyl transformed from being a west coaster to being an east coaster, and a northeast coaster at that, and had a long ride from one place to the other with his dog in his lap. They are very close. He (the dog) had earlier in the year been helped deal with a costly medical emergency by peeps thru a kickstarter (or similar?) campaign.

Word has it that he’s already sick of lobster.

And it is Fooner's fault, all of it.

"RE: Solutions:"
Posted by Agman2 on 10-31-14 at 01:13 PM
Okay, I think I got it...
Tribe's been transported in a fashion involving petroleum propulsion for his chosen mode of transportation. He has left what was previously known as the new frontier which can be considered left of the normal destination when manifesting one's destiny, in order to arrive a shore far far away and to the right of where he once dwelled? What's more, the dude like totally took his canine bro in his ride and got some monetary help on the med side. Sounds like the dude's also suffering from a mild crustacean crises too.

at least that's how I understand things!

Slice was an entertaining writer, she was actually one of the writers that attracted me to this forum, and I remember something about a toaster tattoo, but not a pancake story.

Last minute memory, I think Slice was the only one of us to whom Estee (maybe the best of an amazing group of writers) revealed herself. Himself. A baseball game?

(ETA: Please forgive te use of the past tense verbs. Hopefully she's just missing, not dead. Checking milk cartons, fingers crossed).

I can't do justice to the pancake story, and I don't know where she posted it originally. But in short, it had to do with a sex ed film that j slice had to watch in school as a teenager that featured a mother explaining female reproduction to her daughter and some friends by constructing the relevant tubes and organs out of pancakes.

Brownroach has an excellent memory. It was a disturbing J Slice story and I remember running away from my computer when Slicey got to the butter and maple syrup analogy.

wasn't she one of the originals on these boards?

"RE: who were/are these peeps?"

Not one of the originals, she came along maybe about 2 years after I did. She started out as fivestarwheezy and then after a few months, shortened it to Wheezy.

Now that you mention it... jeez, I'm ten months away from having been on this site for fifteen years. I remember when we provided an East Coast Spoiler thread on OT for Pippy's birth...and he just celebrated his 12th birthday the other day.

"RE: who were/are these peeps?"
Posted by aethelstan on 02-06-15 at 01:02 AM
While I don't remember Pippy's birth. I do know that I posted about all of my children's births and my eldest is 12. The champ in that department had to be Coconut, who started a thread with "I am going into labour". That's dedication.

I collected a few of Wheezy's siggies because they were so entertaining. IceKatt, I think, created most of these. 16 books eh? I think that means that there might be some I haven't read yet. I think my favourite is Cryer's Cross. Great concept. A look at here Wiki page (a former poster here has a wiki page.. that's cool in and of itself) reveals that I'm behind for the Unwanteds series - I've only read the first 3 - and haven't read Dear Bully. Other than that, I've read them all.

Crazy story, my sister-in-law, who's a children's librarian in New England, has met her but I haven't!!

I wonder if I can do the scroll feature properly.

can't seem to make this go the other way.

I have been reading a lot of his posts(mainly in archives of various forums)lately because there isn't much current to read anymore and I've found myself with a little too much time on my hands. I couldn't help but wonder if he and Estee were around at the same time and if they had ever squared off on the boards. Now that would have been a battle.

from what I understand he was banned though. Maybe before that collision could happen.

From what I remember, and my memory is "Shakey" at best, Shakes tended to jump on what he considered stupid posts. Posts that you and I and others might read, sigh, but ignore as too obviously stupid to respond to. And we’d go on. But Shakes would not only not ignore them, and not only would he take them to task, but would attempt to eviscerate them. Over kill.

Then when they responded and didn't seem to see the wisdom of Shakes' egotistical opinions, he would get personal and really go overboard with his insults. Although often they were pretty witty and even sometimes intelligent (sort of) would go so far beyond the guidelines that they couldn’t be ignored. For a long time he was given a pass, the “Shakes' Flaming Pass” (I have no idea how he managed to earn that), but he finally wore out his welcome and abused one too many poster. He had a massive talent for getting people riled.

I think the same pass that he had with flaming posters allowed those posters free rein to flame him in return, but he was quite skilled and few could out flame him.

As far as an Estee vs. Shakes flameout goes, who really knows?

However I think she could easily come out on top (sorry Estee, just a turn of a phrase) if she could keep her temper in check.

And here’s the clincher, even though Estee has certainly taken people who disagreed with her to task (as I’ve found to my chagrin) and at times she’s done it with unfettered directness, she has managed to not get tossed. Look as her mileage count. And she’s done it without a flaming pass. That’s Winning, Charlie.

Thanks Guppy, I always wondered what the story behind shakes was. As I've said, I've read some of his posts, and he really left other posters for dead. Did you ever notice anyone who could stand up to him?(although if he was only attacking posters with "stupid" posts, maybe they didn't have the requisit knowledge or ability to keep up with him.) I have a feeling I would have been one of his victims.

From his posts and ego, he strikes me as s great candidate to be a Lawyer or maybe a reality show contestant.

Those are basically my half-remembered thoughts. Others with better memories might remember more. I know Fooner probably does, as do Snidget, Dabo, Pepe, maybe RollDdice. And Estee. And Ayak. Others.

I remember that Shakes was a contestant on an early reality show, not Survivor, but one that was short lived. So some of us knew what he looked like, and what his real name was. As such, his celebrity status and willingness to post in our forum might have been the basis for his famous Flaming pass. And he was a capable writer.

One of the things that stands out in my memory is that there were occasions when someone who hadn't been aware that someone like Shakes was lurking would put up an innocuous post, and out of the blue Shakes would flame them. It was like seeing a sweet innocent little puppy walking down the street and being kicked hard by a complete stranger. The reactions to that were diverse, but most were either open mouthed incredulous or very angry.

Yep, it was Love Cruise that Shakes (Michael) was a contestant on... and, yes, he is/was a lawyer as well.

He's the one in the blue shirt and short black hair on the bottom row, third from the left:

Shakes first came here in early 2001 and quickly became well-known on here, and it was the following summer that he dropped the news that he was a reality show contestant, so it was apparent that he became a member on this site for the express purpose of raising hype for his show.

He could be a good guy at times and was quite a sharp, at-times brilliant writer, but quite often he was a dick - I think he fell in love with the 'legend' of who he became on this site. He'd openly brag about pulling a dick move, such as laughing about ripping off a gas station employee who mistakenly gave him a $100 bill instead of a $1 bill (or something like that). His flames during S2 and S3 were legendary and a lot of people liked it back then. By about S4, his flames were becoming old and tired (and his tone frequently became more offensive) as it was becoming clear that he was in love with himself.

Another dick move from Shakes was when Love Cruise was due to premiere on September 11, a little terror act bumped his show for several weeks and he openly ranted about a bunch of stupid terrorists usurping 'his' show. That didn't go over particularly well for a while.

Oh... and I was the one who got into a flame war with Shakes that led to his banishment from this site. He went completely over the line with another poster and I got into it with him about that. Gone.

Estee vs. Shakes? Shakes was more vicious, but Estee is more cutting and fluid with her words. Shakes could be easily goaded into a battle. Easy vote for me, it would go to Estee in a flame war between them.

I got him to apologize once. Probably the only time ever. And I was also in with Pepe on the thread that finally got him tossed. We were two, I know, that alerted the 'post that crossed the line'.

The apology came because a former mod, Cygnus-X1 and his wife, LadyCub, had participated in one of the early Final Four pools here, back when the Sports Forum hadn't separated and you often could get the max number of participants playing (50). Due to a family emergency (possible death of a parent or parent-in-law) that was posted in a separate thread, LadyCub didn't fill in her bracket before the first tip off. Shakes (a Chicago native and Sox fan) took it upon himself to write a long diatribe about how LadyCub was a waste of space due to her "preventing another poster from playing" and "being a Cub's fan".

I, who was still quite active at the time, had seen the other thread and called Shakes to task for not cutting slack in a time of family crisis. Shakes claimed ignorance of the other thread (I don't think he read too many threads that he himself didn't start) but still apologized.

I miss the OTCC.

But I do have the entire collection of recipes from every post in OT, even prior to the OTCC.

And it is a 568 page cookbook in my kitchen Which one day I will have published, as was always the plan. I do recall quite a few older posters here on the list of wanting a copy, too.

Oh, and I miss my old name and DAW count and seeing my siggy at the bottom.

BTW, you didn't put my bouncy Nemo fish on this thresd, just sayin.....

Hey Woe, good to see you here again.

Sorry to hear of your trouble signing on. But it's curious that you couldn't because that did work for everyone that knew what Email address they had used when they first signed on. And of course, what their screen name was.

So, just to make sure the advice I offered in the previous post wasn't confusing, I'll try again:

On the first page, in an upper right area, under where it shows the number of active users, is the "First Time Visitor: Please register" hot button. You know where that is because you had to use it in order to get your new username.

Hit that. And enter your original username, original email address, and first and last name.

That should do it, it should offer you a new password (you do lose you old one), but it should restore your original screen name and post count.

Also, the "remain logged in when I return later" check box on the sign in page doesn't work anymore, you have to enter ID and PW each time.

If that doesn't work, just get used to your new name. Which, in my humble opinion, is an improvement. Wow pops, and Woe just seems sad.

But we recognize you either way, so good luck. Fill us in on your life, and I hope you can stick around.

The memories keep rushing in. A margarita may be the only cure.
I remember some of the sigs, most of the names and the Legend of Shakes The Clown.

I seem to recall Webby starting a post called, "This is why I don't have kids" or something to that effect in order to vent his frustration.

I do know that some of those Make-Me-A-New-Sigpic-A-Thons nearly killed me.

Well, I'm just poking my head in here. See you all for BTS in September.
