"Just guess"
Posted by cahaya on 07-05-14 at 01:35 AM
How much is this pile of coins worth in U.S. dollars and cents?
Don't worry, I don't have a clue either. I read somewhere that a group guess was often better than the best individual guess.Post your guesstimate and I'll count it all up sometime in the next few days. Lurkers welcome. Best guesser gets a sig. How's that?
Here's your challenge: Put up a number.

$90.77I arrived at this figure using the clue in post #1 and this chart from the Mint:

Grams/pound: 453.592
I'll even venture a guess on the number of coins in the pile that adds up to $90.77: 275 quarters, 147 dimes, 73 nickels, and 367 pennies.

Side bet? You are high.
Another side bet? Your guess is also high.

You're on. It's an even 50/50 high/low bet on my guesstimate which adds up to seven pounds of coin weight.Flip it.

LAST EDITED ON 07-06-14 AT 10:44 AM (EST)I assume I won our first bet?
Also assuming from your table that there are no halves, golden dollars, Ikes, SBA dollars, etc.?
Finally we should be informed if there are any euros, Canadian nickels, pesos, or Indonesian coins in there.

Oh, it's US coinage is it?Long time complaint
Speaking as a non-US coin user how can you have a coin that doesn't tell you what it's worth?
What's this?
It's a dime.
OK what's it worth?
A dime.
You aren't helping you know.

This from a native of a country that had one of the most bizarre monetary systems of the 20th century. (Decimalization finally arrived in 1971).4 farthings for a penny
12 pence for a shilling
20 shillings for a pound
But there were coins called florins, half crowns and crowns. (2 shillings, 2 shillings 6 pence, and 5 shillings respectfully).
One also had to deal with nicknames for coins such as tanner and bob.
Going back to the time of Queen Victoria, silver coins had the same exact design, with no mark of value at all - the difference in size was your only clue.

And that's why the initials were lsd!You left out guineas (1 pound 1 shilling/5p) which are still used in the sale of racehorses.

You'll have to name them something else. "Guinea" is disrespectful of Italians.
And rodents.

LAST EDITED ON 07-07-14 AT 01:07 PM (EST)I included guineas in my original post but cut them ...
£ for Pound, from Latin libra (pound)
s for shilling, from soldus a Roman silver coin
d for penny, from denarus a small Roman silver coin, weighing 1/240th of a Roman Pound.
English pennies were originally small silver coins (slightly smaller than the aforementioned dime). It wasn't until the reign of Charles I that the penny was issued in copper).

I assume I won our first bet?I'll collect, thank you very much, your guess was way lower than mine was higher. Ching-ching!
The method to my madness:
I was only a dozen coins off of the coin count, but I didn't predict the coin distribution correctly. My figure was based on how much change you collected with one cent change up to ninety-nine cents change, evenly distributed. It turns out that there were more pennies and nickels and a lot fewer quarters in the pile than predicted with this assumption.
To arrive at $90.77, count up all of the change from one cent to ninety-nine cents, determine the total weight and distribution of that change and then multiply the coin counts to add up to seven pounds.

I just stacked the coins to count it all and there are 874 coins.I'll soon post a pic of the ordered stacks with the solution.

Actual pile count: 161 quarters, 166 dimes, 142 nickels and 405 pennies, 874 coins total. Anyone can figure the dollar value.Order = information.
"RE: Coin stacks"
Posted by PepeLePew13 on 07-07-14 at 05:26 PM
161 quarters = 40.25
166 dimes = 16.60
142 nickels = 7.10
405 pennies = 4.05Total = $68.00

Well, crud. I edited my signature, but it insists on wrapping the image link, breaking it. I've manually removed the space, but when I hit save, it puts it back. Am I doing something wrong, or is it just part of the forums being borked? http://community.realitytvworld.com/boards

I've had a similar sized pile and came up with something like $45 - though, it had some loonies ($1 coins) in there.
