Two.

Predicted high for Monday: -8

A record low high. For that kind of high, I'd rather be in Colorado.

Makes the predicted high of 29 on Tuesday when that cold air gets here seem practically tropical.

-3 is not a temperature, it's a rating. It's cold, my nose is cold, my fingers are cold, I need to get more batteries for my hunting socks. I'm looking into this little idea Hey, they get cold too.

Because the two hundred kajillion tons of salt I just witnessed being dumped into a driveway had to come from somewhere.

Meh. It's -13C here or about 9F. Not terribly unusual for a January day here.

All I can say, Southern California beats Montana (I lived in Bozeman for a while). I really got tired of fighting the weather.

Let's see what Bob Says..

Unfortunately for some, I will live longer.

"Downshift."

Current wind chill factor temperature: -17f.

It's at times like these that I question not having gone into a profession which lent itself to the free passing-out of custom-fitted parkas.

I wish you had. What ever profession that would be.

AL - 5F. A record for today.

The boroughs have likely broken their own record low: I haven't checked yet and the numbers may not have been posted. (Wind chill doesn't count: only base.) We've only got a day of this to deal with: it'll be back in the twenties tomorrow and we could be skirting 50f by late Saturday. But a day is more than sufficient.

It's all the weirder because we did have the 50s yesterday -- at about four a.m, and it fell off the cliff from there. Most of the local snow melted. Any melt which didn't run off or evaporate... well, be really careful where you step. Or drive. Or step near where others are driving.

But at least we're generally used to the idea that this sort of weather can show up -- which means heavy coats are owned, sometimes at great expense. At a guess, the typical Alamaba resident is prepped for freezing -- but not subzero.

Are the hunting stores having a run on gear? (It's the warmest clothing I could picture being readily available.)

We don't get it as much on the East Coast, but Midwest standard is the night before the bottom falls out of the thermometer it heats up. In the dark. For no apparent reason.

Makes waking up freezing so much more obnoxious when the high for the day was 60, at midnight, when it was only 45 the day before.

Sometimes you are lucky and that Chinook warming wind comes during the day. That is when you see those photos of people ice skating outside on the pond in shorts and tank tops, but only if the pond had a chance to freeze sufficiently the month before to not break up during the few hours of extreme warmth.

I'd be looking at those great handmade fur parkas, hats and gloves that the native Alaskans are shown wearing. They look like they could keep one cozy at minus a million.

I'd just be looking however, hand made fur stuff like that, expensive to begin with but with the additional 500% mark up for all us rich people in the lower 48, I'm sure they are way out of my range, especially since we see low temps only once every few years.

It's so cold that all schools in our area has closed for the day and garbage pickup was cancelled. That never happens - schools would only close for extreme snowfall and I can't remember a time when garbage pickup was ever cancelled.

-22C is the temperature at the moment, wind chill -34C (that's -29F).

In Kentucky, heck, it was so cold that an escaped convict on the lam for one day turned himself back into custody because he was suffering from hypothermia:

I saw that in a storefront this morning: six large panels of fully-iced glass, coated from floor to ceiling. If you're going to turn off the heat, shut down the humidifier...

So apparently an NJ electricity company has a pipeline running into the South. One single current pipeline. And the southern states are using more joules than normal due to the cold. So NJ residents are being asked to turn off their power so that people who loathe the Mid-Atlantic can use the volts to run ammunition polishers while they dream of the day they get to kill all of us stupid godless libruls.

...yes, but my volts go straight to the Robertson household!
