I've heard of this happening in the news, but now it is someone I actually know.I'm involved in a youth football organization, and one of our coaches/board members had a very interesting announcement at our meeting this afternoon.
He (well, technically his widow wife), got official notice from the V.A. stating that, with their deepest condolences, due to his recent death his monthly retirement payments will stop. She also received two checks totaling just over $20K for his insurance benefits.
He was not amused. The man served 20+ years in uniform with three tours in Afghanistan/Iraq and is still very much with us.
He contacted the V.A. that same day and was told "there was some kind of error" (really?). They had no answer as to when his monthly allotments would be restored.
The aforementioned checks were sent back uncashed and he has already contacted his member of Congress to expedite any investigation & restoring his income (he's has other issues with the V.A. and this was the most effective action).
