One of our missing otters has started a conversation on Facebook and I thought it would be interesting to see what people think over here. The question is... How do you measure a second, you know when you are rebooting a PC or suchlike
I count one elephant, two elephant, and so on, and you?

Since childhood, it has been "one thousand one, one thousand two, one thousand three..." when counting. There are a number of school sports where we need to count time. In intramural flag (American) football, we had to count to three before being able to rush the passer. In basketball, there is the "three second" rule where a player cannot remain within the box (or "in the key") for more than three seconds.

The first thing that pops into my head is "Mississippi", as in "One Mississippi, Two Mississippi, etc.."

I wonder if Welsh kids learn to count by going "One Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Two Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Three Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch..."?For me, I just point with fingers as a way of measuring out my count - point one finger, pull it back into a grip, then point two fingers, so on.

As an intramural basketball referee, we were trained to do it with hand motions, palm down, in a sweeping back and forth from the chest out away from the chest, one... two... three... This also makes the coaches/players aware of the count if they're watching the refs.

I hear that soccer refs don't even need to do that. They just need to have Abby Wambach shouting 1, 2, 3, in their ears.

One opossum (bump), two opossum (bump), three opossum (bump),...(Please convey to your pets that this was a joke. Grundy and Gustave, I believe?).

Think "roadkill".And remember, just a joke, just an amusement for our tolerant animal friends, who I just know appreciate a joke as much as anybody else. Ha ha, right? Ha ha. And understand that I don't need any possums bent on revenge chasing me around at this point in my life. They gots sharp pointy little teeth.

I grew up with one one thousand as an option. Also, one mississippi. In sports, it tended to be one steamboat, two steamboat but, outside of that, 'one one thousand'.
Since I started playing ultimate (over 20 years ago now - yikes!) though with 'stall 1, stall 2', I use that the most.

What ever happened to the good old second hand on your watch (or even the timer function on a cell phone/iPod)?
