"End of the year lists"

So it's that time, when people make lists of what happened during the year.

Starting it off...the year in baby names.

When I were a lad Ace was definitely the strongest female character on the TV I watched.

Donathon sounds like the parents registered the child whilst they had a cold and were too embarrassed to go back when they realised the mistake.

Lovely cheese Mooney

Where are Voice of the Beehive when we need them?

I believe that actually happens. Parents misspell a name and the child gets stuck with it as their legal name. I have seen Jhon, Goerge, Daiana among others.

I saw an article recently about a man named Joesph and his multi-year difficulties to get a drivers license due to two different spellings of his name on official government documents.

Yes, I've seen my fair share of unique names after two decades in the classroom. (Including EuNique and her twin sister SpeShall). Spelling variations abound, such as Monic (Monique), Kivin (Kevin) and the aforementioned Jhon. I also had a student with the middle name Ω (yes, the actual Greek letter).

I blame The Artist Formerly Known As The Artist Formerly Known As Prince

The artist formerly known as Prince,
On stage he would posture and mince.
Then just for a giggle
Changed his name to a squiggle,
And nobody's heard of him since.

I really don't care if you give your kids weird names, or almost as bad, regular names with weird spellings. Just stop rolling your eyes at me when I ask you how to spell it or spell it like it is supposed to be spelled.
