"Back to School"

Posted by cqvenus on 09-05-12 at 07:29 AM

my kids are going back to school last of everyone I know.

I have a 1st grader and a Kindergartner this year! That leaves me home with a toddler and a bump.

Anyone have any back to school advice, retrospective or reflective? I can't believe they're "enjoying" their last day of summer vacation today... with torrential downpours...

my 1st grader was very into school. she had no problems. My K-man this year is a little more shy. i'm Typical-Parent worried.

cq
anyone else not sent their kids on the bus yet? the waiting is killing them! (and me!)

No children for me so can't give any advice but congrats on scoring some alone time while the kids are in school!

never thought i'd be one of those "can't wait until they go back!" moms, but my older one really needs the structure and mental stimulation.

Hey CQ, good to see ya!

The kids will be fine once they get used to the whole routine, but the most important thing to do with them is to have a set routine, above all.

I posted a sheet in our kitchen showing times that the boys need to complete certain things by (wake up 6:30, dressed and breakfast by 7:00, lunches packed 7:15, in car 7:30, etc.) and also reminders for them to put their lunch boxes on the counter and their agenda planners on the family info desk as soon as they get home from school. Without that visual posted reminder, we have to verbally tell them to do it every time. But if they have something that they actually see, they tend to do it more readily especially after I "gave" them choices on where they wanted to put them so they felt like they were contributing something and thus more willing to do it. In the past, when we didn't have posted times, it was sometimes chaotic to get them ready to go as they didn't think about how much time they had to get ready.

And... holy cow! Full house already! It doesn't seem that long ago that you were kidless and I just had Pippy when we had our peep meet, does it? Now, Pippy is in grade 4 and has already sprouted up to my chin, while Poppy is in grade 2. Time sure passes. The older kids - one is now at the University of Waterloo and the other is in grade 11.

Conga-rats on your bump!

Pepe - that cartoon is totally me! I count down the time til that "yellow bus of mercy" comes rolling down the front street.

True story. A few years ago Christmas break was ending in the middle of a cold snap. It had been a very difficult time, this was as we were coming to the realization that Sam needed to be on medication to help regulate his mood, aggression and sleep (the kid was only sleeping 2-3 hours at a time, waking nightmares, etc.). It was so cold the girls' busses weren't running and the car was in the shop so there would be no way to get Sam to school if his bus didn't take him. When that wonderful yellow bus honked outside, I was in such a panic it was going to leave without him that I literally bodychecked Mr. Q out of the way to get Sam out the door and on that bus.

Your kids are how old now?

Holy smokes.

Well, who am I to talk: my kids are now in grade 2 and Senior Kindergarten respectively. Not to mention the 15-month-old darling that keeps us busy at home.

Where does the time go?

Half man, half amazing, all DAW
And good to see you too CQ!

Don't know how long it'll be before Meemo comes back on here, but this is from the archives:

Good to see you again cq! Still in Buffalo? Mine went back yesterday.

So let me get this straight...you have a stepson, right? Then you have a 1st grader, kindergartner and a toddler and one on the way? You have now caught up and surpassed me! Congrats!

I have a 5th, 4th, 1st and 2 year old.

You've been hotpocketed!

...what did you think of the Oggieloves movie?

"RE: So..."

LOL I saw a preview for that during both "Secret Life of Arietty" and "Brave"! Did that come out yet? It looks awful and I would threaten my 8 year old boy in going to see it if he did not behave in school last spring.

Next movie for us is probably "Wreck It Ralph".

In payment for the multiple bits of fun that was the Brigantine weekend trip, I have ordered talked the circle into a full-fledged Wreck-It Ralph party and everyone will work their schedules to include any potential midnight showing if I have to get some of them fired to free up the time.

Not that I blame them for all of it, but the beds and driving will cover the bill.

Quebecois are very different from Ontarians

That has to be the understatement of the year. They are so different they actually speak a different language!

"so different..."
Posted by cqvenus on 09-06-12 at 02:45 PM

they're so different that they ought to be a separate country so i can dislike them more easily. my experience with Ontarians has always been very positive. these people here... and i really hate generalizing an entire culture like this, but i have not met one single nice person AND none of them know how to drive. or park.

cq

NOT ONE.

From the other side of the teacher's desk -- (and we started in mid-August -- first time for the "early start" calendar resulting in a loss of three weeks vacation time that will never be recouped -- but that's another vent) -- I always look forward to the first day of school; fresh faces (and the 6th graders with the "deer-in-the-headlights" look for the first couple of days); setting the ground-rules and reconnecting with colleagues.

I really like the idea of establishing a set pattern, and the fact that you're using visual clues to remind everyone of what needs to be done.

Since my kids are in year-round schools, school started in July and their first quarter ends on Tuesday. The year round calendar here is 45 days on, 15 days off, so the boys will be out until the end of the month. Thank goodness for track out camps.

For those of you old-timers here, Bubba is now in 2nd grade, and Mini Coop is in first. I know a number of you were here when those little guys were born.
