"Bye Bye Zellers"
Posted by Maroonclown on 01-13-11 at 01:12 PM
Hellloooooooo Target.Zellers has got to the the crappiest discount department store that was ever born. Finally someone with great business sense has realized that and Target will be coming to Canada and crushing Zellers under its huge corporate foot.
I, for one, cannot wait. I will no longer have to order out of the Signals catalogue and pay atrocious shipping charges in order to get my "upscale discount" items.
Woo and Hoo.

The funny part? You'll go to your friend's house and they'll all have the same rugs and shower curtains now!I'm thrilled a Target is opening close to my work. It was otherwise a PITA to run in quick for a few things that were on sale.

Which is why I try and avoid the Home Depots, Ronas and Loews in town.

Unless of course I shop Home Depot stateside where they have different bits than in Canada

Sorry MC, but you're going to have to wait a little longer. According to Max's link:As part of the deal, Zellers will sublease the properties back from Target for a period of time. Target plans to open 100 to 150 Target stores in Canada in 2013 and 2014.
I *heart* Target!

Since most Americans have never seen a Zellers before (and possibly never heard of one), is there any US chain you can compare them to for sheer crap factor?

LAST EDITED ON 01-14-11 AT 02:22 PM (EST)Walmart is actually a step above Zellers. One of the reasons Zellers is biting the dust is because they can't compete with Walmart and Costco.
Zellers would be kind of like a Woolco or Woolworths but worse.
ETA - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woolco
Oddly enough some Woolcos became Zellers's (poor attmept at pluralizing Zellers)

I would think your Zellers is probably one of the nicer ones which may be spared but Byoffer is right. Here they tend to be in the seedier areas.

Funny, I always thought Target and Zellers were basically the same store.

I am certainly not an expert on these things, but I would put Zellers between Walmart and, say, Giant Tiger. If my memory is correct, GT (and other real discount shops) tend to sell batches of things they get by the truck, but they don't have a lot of regular inventory items. Zellers tends to have more normal inventory items. In reality I think Zellers isn't too different from Walmart, but doesn't have the inventory turnover to compete, and doesn't have the range of products (no grocery store).
The Zellers that I can think of also tend to be in the less desirable areas of the city, so I think their product tends to cater to that.

While I've never been in a Walmart stateside I would guess that because they've been around a lot longer in the US they've gotten worse for wear. Whereas Walmart is "relatively" new here. Stores in my area are still clean, well organized, etc. The Walmart closest to me is one of those complexes that has Marksworth Warehouse, Best Buy, Reitman's, Old Navy, Shoe Company, on and on and on. It's maybe 10 years old.The Zellers however are scuzzy, clothing all over the place, broken furniture, frames, etc on display with a general feeling of overall grime.
I would like to point out however, that I do try and avoid Walmart whenever possible but it doesn't kill me to go into one. Going into Zellers would.

This sounds closer to Kmart than anything else -- but locally, if you're going into a Kmart, you bring torches, a hundred feet of rope, and a whip for fending off Customer Service.
"RE: Bye Bye Zellers"
Posted by byoffer on 01-14-11 at 05:13 PM
I think Kmart is a very good comparator. And I think that MC's comments above are true - most Zellers are older, and most Walmarts here are quite new. That could be a big part of the reason us thinking better of Walmart than maybe we should!
Question for Americans - is Walmart comparable to Target?
"RE: Bye Bye Zellers"
Posted by Max Headroom on 01-14-11 at 05:28 PM
is Walmart comparable to Target?Yes and no. Walmart is perceived to have slightly better prices but lower quality merchandise, while Target is more upscale in its offerings (though still a discounter). The Walmart shopping experience is less pleasant, as they never seem to have enough cashiers or staff to help you find something, but their prices are so good that people put up with the inconveniences to save money.
I shop both places. If I need a commodity item like toothpaste, toilet paper, canned soup, name-brand toys, etc., I go to Walmart. If I'm looking for something where quality is more of an issue, or I'm looking for a specific brand or type of item, I go to Target.

LAST EDITED ON 01-14-11 AT 04:00 PM (EST)Do you have Big Lots in Canada? Or Aldi? Those are two overstock-type stores I've visited here in the US. Just trying to get a better understanding... As for Zellers, I've never heard of them, despite having visited four Canadian provinces in my travels.
I need agman to customize this for me.

I like Zellers. Maybe it's because my whole city is less than upscale, I don't know. But their kids' clothes don't fall apart after you wash them twice, like the Walmart stuff does. And their shoes used to last until my kids grew out of them. Now that DS is bigger, he goes through all kinds of shoes, of course. Gawd, that boy is hard on clothes. We have a couple nice ones here: well-lit, well-stocked, tidy, decent prices.
I still have my ClubZ card somewhere, even though I collect points on that HBC thing now.

I don't shop much at Target; compared to Walmart, I don't see any better quality in clothing - I don't buy many clothes from either one - but if buying Fruit of the Loom undies or socks, I'd rather pay Walmart price than target price.
Same with toiletries, detergents, etc. Everything at Target is higher.I'm thinking your Zellers is comparable to K-mart here (most all have closed in our area) - which was bought out by Sears. Sears quality has gone down also IMO, except for Craftsman's toolS

It was the other way around, actually. K-Mart bought Sears.
