No flights will be leaving the UK between mid-day and six pm due to volcanic ash.

Poor rest of the world being cut off

I don't know why you're worried. It's a backwater anyway!

Isn't it a podunk backwater, or am I confused with Ohio?

Well, I couldn't remember if you were a socialist backwater or a podunk backwater, but I knew that you were a backwater.

I think we could be both.

We get that sort of thing fairly often on this side of the pond in Alaska. A lot of the Asia-West Coast USA flights go through there and a couple of the volcanoes up that way are fairly active.

Ash in a jet engine is a bad thing. Usually the pilots can manage to get one or more of the engines to restart so they can land safely.

Usually

That's not a word I'd want to hear if I was on one of those planes!

It really isn't the most comforting word, is it?

In April 1982, British Airways Flight 009 en route to Auckland from London flew into a cloud of dust and ash thrown up by the eruption of Mount Galunggung, on the Indonesian island of Java, resulting in the failure of all four of its engines.

Fortunately the pilots were able to glide the Boeing 747-200 far enough to exit the ash cloud, before three of the engines were restarted, allowing the crippled flight to divert to Jakarta and perform a safe landing.

At the time it was the longest glide in a non-purpose-built aircraft.

The event was also remembered for the announcement made by the airliner's remarkably calm captain, Eric Moody.

He told passengers: "Ladies and gentlemen this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control. I trust you are not in too much distress?"

They would have to peel me off the ceiling of the plane if I heard an announcement like that.

And then ply me with copious amounts of alcohol.

But it sounds so soothing in a nice British accent.

Well, that's just great.

Now the private jets that bring me my daily fish and chips from my favorite shop in Whitehall, and my mid afternoon tea and scones from the palace will have to detour. Heaven forbid, they might be late.

Oh well, I just need to buy some faster jets, I guess. Or a friggin big cork for that pesky volcano.

I guess you'll have to leave by Chunnel or boat instead.

Eyjafjallajoekull

Try saying that fast 5 times.

I have a friend who works for Iceland Air and flies to Iceland all the time - I wonder if it affected his flights.

So far it it lower down so doesn't effect cross-Atlantic flights between the continent of Europe and North America. We will see how long that lasts.
