With Sesame Street turning 40 (and giving the Count something higher than usual to target), let's go with a simple pair of questions. Two! Two questions!

1. Who's your favorite character?

2. Who's the least?

So help me, if this turns into a 'Bert & Ernie are gay' hate thread, I'm going to go garbage can on someone's rear.

I was definitely more of a Mr. Rogers' fan in my youth, but I will say this - before the rise of Elmo, Sesame Street was definitely a consistently good show.

Love - Tie between Cookie Monster and the Martians (yiiiip yipyipyipyip)

Loathe - Elmo, natch. Although I'm tickled by the fact that the fellow who plays his voice is a large black gentleman with a husky baritone.

The guy was on Wait Wait don't tell me and a couple of times he switched from his voice to Elmo's so fast it sounded like the responses overlapped. Tres freaky.

The talk radio station my folks listened to a lot back in the day had a late afternoon drivetime host who happened to also be a large black man. He did not sound like it. He often showed up to speaking engagements and got some pretty shocked looks when people saw the person that went with the voice.

He did worry one day if he'd been fired. On the show before his they did a segment on racism and people had called into complain that the station had no black people working for it.

As has been observed in the past, this isn't my category, because I'll just bet that there's a difference between Sesame street characters and Muppets. Having guessed that I'll not say Kermit and Gonzo as best and Miss Piggy as least.

But I think Sesame Street introduced "Conjunction Junction", and if so, I'll stretch the "Best" category to include the song writers of the show.

If not, it's to the back of the line for me. Again.

I'm no expert but I believe Conjunction Junction was part of the Schoolhouse Rock series that played between Saturday morning childrens television shows not Sesame Street. To this day I still sing the preamble of the Constituition.

I expect that you're right. I over-heard this (and a few other) songs from some show that the kids were watching, and thought it was brilliant, catchy, and very sophisticated, especially in light of the fact that the show was targeted (I think) to pre-schoolers.

In middle school for one of our required civics tests we had to be able to write out the preamble to the constitution.

There were a lot of people in that class trying to hum under their breath or tapping something in the rhythm to remember all the words.

Favorite: Cookie Monster, we have so much in common.

Least: Big Bird, the only time I found him entertaining was when he was the only one who ever saw Snufflufagus(sp?) and everyone else thought Big Bird was imagining him.

As somebody already well slightly beyond the Sesame Street target age in 1969, my impressions are from another perspective -- how my sister's kids reacted.

LOVE - Kermit (hey, he was Charles Gibson's fav...) and Cookie Monster

HATE - Big Bird scared the peewadna out of my niece every.single.time.

(Now ask me about The Muppet Show -- THAT was entertainment!)

I've recently re-watched a bunch of the early Muppet Show on DVD. I had forgotten how truly weird some of that was. Enjoyable, but weird.

1. (tie) Oscar the Grouch-Anyone who hates people enough to live in a trashcan has certainly earned my respect

Cookie Monster-Cookies are delicious. Plus, I love his googly eyes.


2. Prarie Dawn-I'm not sure if she's still on the show, but her goody two shoes act was annoying.

Sesame Street came too late for me to be a regular viewer, but at least we had Captain Kangaroo.

When I did watch Oscar always made me chuckle the most.

Another Captain fan! (Watch out for all those ping-pong balls!)

About 12 years ago I was in Chicago, taking a baseball soujourn to The Friendly Confines -- and guess who was the Special Guest throwing out the first pitch? THE CAPTAIN himself! (No Mr. Greenjeans, however...)

This was when Harey Carey was still doing Take Me Out to the Ballgame, so we missed hearing The Captain's singing voice.

I didn't watch SS until my boys were growing up. I watched Captain Kangaroo - and really liked Mr. Green Jeans. LOL


Favorite: Grover. There was just something about him that I liked.
Least: Elmo. Frankly, his high pitched laugh and perky attitude got on my nerves.

Now, ask me about Muppets - I loved Gonzo the great! I wasn't all that keen on the Dr. - but loved his assistant Beaker.

Or the Fraggels - I really liked Mookie. She reminded me of the serene/spiritual people I knew in real life. I also really liked Cotterpin - Doozers are so cute anyway, but she was always trying to buck against the status quo. And finally, I have to admit, I always wanted my dog to be like Sprocket.

But I really disliked Jr. Gorg. He was such a weenie! LOL



For Estee: I loved the "hear fishy fishy fishy" with Bert and Ernie on the rowboat. LOL!

I love some light Sesame talk for a Friday.

1. Cookie Monster was probably my fave. Special mention to the Martians, Biff & Sully, and Slimy the worm.

2. The Count. Man he would be annoying to hang out with. Imaging ordering a round of beers for your table. It would turn into a big production.

ETA: I preferred my counting in Ladybug Picnic form.

When I in the service, one thing for guys to do to cure boredom in Japan (when you live there and can't speak the language, there ain't much to do) was to get stoned and watch Sesame Street on Japanese TV. It had just debuted (this was 1971) and none of us had ever seen anything like that before. We figured the writers had to be stoners.

I never watched Sesame Street as a kid. Nor Captain Kangaroo or any of the other children's shows at the time. The first TV I ever watched as a kid was Little Rascals and Gilligan's Island because I could understand the facial expressions and the goofy actions of the characters (no captioning available back then).
