"Snow!!!"

Posted by MPVLOST on 12-05-08 at 04:04 PM
It's snowing here, so I was inspired to start a snow related topic.

1. Do you live in an area that gets snow during the winter?

2. If not, do you wish you did?

3. Do you like snow?

4. What snow related outdoor activities do you enjoy? (skiing, sledding, snowball fights, etc)

-----------------------------------------
Going commando for now, but thanks Grit for the sigpic I was using for awhile.

1. Yes. Wisconsin.
2. You warm climate peeps that think snow is cute? Try scraping a layer of ice and snow off your car in -20 degree temps and driving home at 10 mph on the highway terrified for your life.
3. Go ahead, guess if I like snow.
4. I enjoy sitting inside by the fire with a blanket, cup of coffee, a cat & a good book.

Ditto everything Weltek said. Adding if you aren't actually driving, but are a passenger during #2, it is actually worse.

1. Do you live in an area that gets snow during the winter?

We get some snow most winters, but occasionally it will save it all up for a couple of years then dump a huge amount all at once.

2. If not, do you wish you did?

We get about as much snow as I want to deal with here.

3. Do you like snow?

When I don't have to shovel it, or deal with idiot drivers I love snow. We usually get some nice snows where it is just enough to hide the grass, but not quite enough to stick on the roads. I really like those snows.

4. What snow related outdoor activities do you enjoy? (skiing, sledding, snowball fights, etc)

Laughing at the SUV's upside down in the ditch because they forget that just because you can go fast in a straight line doesn't mean you can stop, or turn.

Me too! Around here, it's all these transplanted NYC people who think that now they live in the "country" they need an SUV, which gives them a license to drive however they like because they've got 4WD. Idjits.

I drive better in the snow in my 5-speed Hyundai Elantra then those yahoos with the 4WD.

I would think NYCers would be good in the snow. Snows quite a bit there in my experience.

Most of them don't know how to drive in the snow (or in fair weather, for that matter) because they usually take the subway or bus. It's once they move up to my area that they're forced to drive everywhere and are incapable of dealing with snow.

I'm planning on buying a snowmobile, some snow shoes, and cross-country skis and retire to the Adirondacks (where they'll probably refer to me as that d@mned downstate intruder).

Well, duh. Native New Yorkers would be a bit stupid about the driving thing, eh?

See, my problem is I don't know any native New Yorkers. All my Big Apple friends are from here or New Jersey or Western New York. And they know how to drive in snow. Of course, they've all been there a while, over 20 years. They may have lost that talent. Think it's like riding a bike?

>1. Do you live in an area that gets snow during the winter?

Unfortunately, yes. If it would only be here a day or two, that would be fine. But 5+ months is too much at my age. My arthritic knees can't take it.

>2. If not, do you wish you did?

Anyone who says yes to this is welcome to trade places and knees with me any time.

>3. Do you like snow?

No, I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate it.

>4. What snow related outdoor activities do you enjoy? (skiing, sledding, snowball fights, etc)

Sitting in John's living room in front of the fireplace with a glass of wine and the dogs sitting on my cold feet. Or snuggling with John in bed under about 10 quilts.

1. Do you live in an area that gets snow during the winter? Most winters, yes.

2. If not, do you wish you did? N/A

3. Do you like snow? Love it! Love it! Love it! Especially since I'm not usually the one responsible for plowing our road or shovelling the walk.

4. What snow related outdoor activities do you enjoy? (skiing, sledding, snowball fights, etc) We go downhill skiing as frequently as possible. My husband and younger daughter are both snowboarders as well. We also like sledding.

1. Yes. (grumble)

2. Okay. If I didn't live in an area where it snows, I'd miss it. A little. I'd get over it very quickly, in record time, even, but there would be a teeny tiny twinge.

3. I like snow if I'm inside looking at it, and don't have any plans to go out. I love the way my yard looks after a fresh fallen show, but then after the mail carrier walks through it I really hate it. I don't like mashed up, marred show.

4. I went skiing in high school and I liked that. I think I'm too crumbly for that now.
I do like driving on other people's lawns in the snow. That's a blast.

ETA: a little story.

It snowed a fair amount here the other day. The next morning Baby Fro was standing by the back patio doors looking out at the snow. She turned to me and said, "Get coat on?" I said, "why do you want to put your coat on?" She replied, "Go outside!" I asked, "why do you want to go outside?" She answered, "Eat snow!"

I couldn't stop laughing. This is the first time she's really seen snow (last winter she was too young to really notice it.) I have NO idea where she got the idea to eat snow. I didn't think I'd be having the "yellow snow" talk with her quite so soon!

Sprayed ice cream bar all over the desk, I always wondered where those crop circles on my lawn came from.

If you do, I, uh, wasn't there Wednesday night. Nope. Not me.

Maybe she saw other kids eating snow on a kid's show?

DD used to call it snow cereal, when we'd gather up some snow, and put some flavored coffee creamer on it. It's a nice treat.

Guess I should answer my own questions.

1. Do you live in an area that gets snow during the winter?
Yes, obviously

2. If not, do you wish you did?
Yes, I like the snow.

3. Do you like snow?
I do. I don't like the cold and wind that goes along with the snow, but snow in and of itself I love.

4. What snow related outdoor activities do you enjoy? (skiing, sledding, snowball fights, etc)
Snow football - the best thing ever.

1. Do you live in an area that gets snow during the winter?
Yes, occassionally, but often only a couple of times per year and for only a few days at a time.

2. If not, do you wish you did? I do miss the snow as I grew up in a area that got a lot of snow

3. Do you like snow? yes, a lot, unless I have to drive up dangerous mountain passes or am stuck in white-outs on the highway...horrifying...

4. What snow related outdoor activities do you enjoy? (skiing, sledding, snowball fights, etc) Love sledding, making snow forts, snow angels and walking in the snow at night. It seems to make everything more quiet...

1. Do you live in an area that gets snow during the winter?
Northern Indiana, famous for it's "lake effect" snow storms that can be so localized that a five minute drive can make a difference of a foot of snow or a dusting.

2. If not, do you wish you did? I rant & rave while I scrape & shovel but growing up with it I think I would miss it, although I should probably give it a try.

3. Do you like snow? Sort of, although I wish it would fall where I want and go away when I want. No, I take that back, it can be just beautiful and peaceful and sometimes I need just that.

4. What snow related outdoor activities do you enjoy? (skiing, sledding, snowball fights, etc)

I used to ice skate and sled a lot as a kid. The neighbor in the days before getting hurt didn't mean calling a lawyer had a pond, an A frame open ended building that held a roaring fireplace and a steel trough they would ice down for sledding. Neighborhood teens would shovel the ice, the women's service group would make hot chocolate, and everyone within miles would hang out there. We'd go after school till dinner, go back until bedtime and hang there every weekend. It was all free. They even had a "bomb shelter" that doubled as a first aid & bathroom. These people hosted literally 50 to 150 people daily, mostly kids daily weather permitting. I can't imagine in this day and age people opening their property up to that type of invasion. Ah the good old days.

1. Do you live in an area that gets snow during the winter?
Yes, I do. (last year we had the third snowiest winter on record for our area. We had about 96 inches of snow total. We're off to a slower start this year. We got maybe an inch over Thanksgiving weekend but it melted after a day)

2. If not, do you wish you did?

3. Do you like snow?
Well, I hate driving in it. My kids are old enough to shovel it, so that's not so bad. I'd rather be warm, though!

4. What snow related outdoor activities do you enjoy? (skiing, sledding, snowball fights, etc)
I am ashamed to say that I really don't do much outdoors. I should. But I've never been much of a outdoorsy person. I went sledding a lot as a kid.

My favorite activity right now is inspecting the various snow creations of my kids.

Yes, it's pretty. It would be prettier if it melted on all concrete/asphalt surfaces upon contact and didn't turn gray. This is why I want to move south, with fond memories of snow.

Snowforts, snowmen, sledding
My favorite snow activity is sitting home with a cup of hot chocolate watching the snow fall outside.

What kind of snow? The light fluffy kind that's easy to shovel is best, the thick soggy heavy stuff isn't good for much except making snowmen.

1. Do you live in an area that gets snow during the winter?

Yes, but it doesn't get as much as it used to in the old days.

2. If not, do you wish you did?

N/A

3. Do you like snow?

Yes, but I mostly enjoy sitting in my house and looking at the fairy flakes as they drift from the sky. I love watching everything turn white. I even like the ice that forms on trees during ice storms, but that just makes driving too treacherous for comfort.

We are always prepared for snow. I keep extra amounts of toilet paper on hand, I can bake my own bread, and I have a freezer full of food.

4. What snow related outdoor activities do you enjoy? (skiing, sledding, snowball fights, etc)

I just saw a snowball maker yesterday. It looks kind of like an ice cream scooper. I'm thinking - how lazy can you be?

Anyway, I like sledding, snowman making, and walking in the snow. DH likes to ski, though he hasn't been skiing since we've been married.

1. Do you live in an area that gets snow during the winter?
Yes, but the most we ever get is 6 inches. (The locals here think it's a blizzard. They wouldn't handle a Nor'ester very well.)

3. Do you like snow? I like snow up until March. Then it can go away!

4. What snow related outdoor activities do you enjoy? (skiing, sledding, snowball fights, etc)I love walking my dog in the snow. She leaps through the snowdrifts like they are nothing. She loves snow more then anything.

I woke up this morning to the sound of the plow. First accumulation of the season.

1. Do you live in an area that gets snow during the winter?
Yes, although I live at the coast. Snowfall totals tend to be drastically higher not to many miles inland.

2. If not, do you wish you did?
I cannot picture living somewhere without the changes and ranges of seasons we have here.

3. Do you like snow?
Yes.

4. What snow related outdoor activities do you enjoy? (skiing, sledding, snowball fights, etc)
All of the above. And I like indoor winter activities too.

My next song is for Agman.
Now, keep in mind, you've just asked me these questions after our first real snow of the season. Ask me again in March and my answers may be different.

1. Do you live in an area that gets snow during the winter? *looks outside of results of Alberta Clipper* Uh, yep.

3. Do you like snow? Eh. Hate driving in it, especially to get off of the hill that my Grandma's house is on (it's late on the plow priority list.....) I used to love it, but then I think once I had to start shoveling it, I started disliking it.

4. What snow related outdoor activities do you enjoy? (skiing, sledding, snowball fights, etc) I used to like sledding, especially in college, when they used stolen lunch trays as well as real sleds and inner tubes to get down the hills at St. Vincent College. I think the only really safe place for me to do something like that now is a ski place, and I don't feel like driving to those places, especially in winter/snowy conditions........

1. Do you live in an area that gets snow during the winter? Most winters we get some snow. Some years we get a lot and some years we get practically nothing.

2. If not, do you wish you did? I love the change of seasons and that includes winter and snow!

3. Do you like snow? Yes! In fact I prefer winters where we get a lot of snow because we tend to have a lot of blue skies and sunny days after the storms. The years we don't get much snow it's just grey and rainy all winter and that's blah. I love a good nor'easter where you're snowed in and can just relax and watch the snow fall.

4. What snow related outdoor activities do you enjoy? (skiing, sledding, snowball fights, etc) Downhill and XC skiing, sledding, walking my dog and throwing snowballs for her to chase/eat, and then going inside and making a fire and drinking hot cocoa
