"Olympic Names"

Can we have a petty thread to note athlete names that are funny?

Usain Bolt is totally apropos for the world's fastest man.

Third place in men's trampoline? Dong Dong.

So what names are making you chuckle?

And the Spiker is not a nickname, it was his mother's maiden name.

That'd be Marshevet Hooker, who's running in the women's 200 meter race.

My personal favorite is Chinese gymnast He Kexin. Not that her name is particularly funny, but rather that headlines like "He wins Olympic gold in women's uneven bars" are funny.

Well... maybe it's just me.

Another catchy agman siggie

I blinked a couple of times at headlines about He winning a woman's gold medal myself.

I completely agree. I have to reread practically every sentence written about her, or rather, He, before it makes sense.

Isn't He 1 of the half people Bela was ranting about?

He Kexin (won tiebreaker for gold over Nastia Liukin), Jiang Yuyuan and Yang Yilin. And here's an example of Kexinlogic:

"I was born in 1992 and I'm 16 years old now," He said Monday. "The FIG has proved that. If I'm under 16, I couldn't have been competing here."

Not so much a personal name as the name on a team uniform. This is the women's beach volley ball team from Brazil. DH and I got a good giggle out of this.

Heh... there was an old joke that came out after she retired - someone spread a rumour that Picabo Street became a nurse in a large hospital but was forbidden to answer the phone lest she said, "Picabo, I.C.U."

No truth to that rumour, though, as she never became a nurse in the first place.

"Lolo"

Lolo Jones....the American favorite to win the hurdles. Unfortunately, Lolo went too low low and hit the second to last hurdle knocking her out of the medals today.

I love this bit from the link though:

Her best friend is Canadian hurdler Priscilla Lopes-Schliep.

Our gal won bronze in that event!!!!!

Very happy about the bronze for Lopes-Schliep.

LoLo doesn't suck to look at. Just sayin'.

I glanced in on the Canada-Australia softball matchup earlier today and saw an Aussie player with the surname Titcume. That couldn't have been an easy surname to have while in high school.

Last week we noticed an Israeli swimmer in the Men's 200m Freestyle whose first name was Nimrod. We looked for him again all week, to no avail. I guess that was all he swam. He did set an Israeli record!

It begins 8-8-08
